NAME OF THE TOPIC : ACIDS STAGE : 14+

CURRICULAR STATEMENT
Pupil develops factual knowledge, conceptual knowledge, procedural
knowledge and metacognitive knowledge of the concept of acids and its role in
our life through observation, discussion, experimentation and evaluation by
questioning participating in practical work and group discussion

TERMS: Acids

FACTS:

1. Lime

2. Tamarind

3. Orange

4. Tomato
5. Hydrochloric acid

6.Sulphuric acid

7. Acetic acid

8. Nitric acid

9. Oxalic acid

10. Carbonic acid

CONCEPTS

1. Acids have sour taste

2. Changes blue litmus to red

3. Produce hydrogen by reacting with metals

4. Produce carbon dioxide by the reaction with carbonate

5. Neutralize by reacting with alkali

6. Phenolphthalein shows no colour changes

LEARNING OUTCOMES

It enables pupil to develop
A) Factual knowledge on acids by;

1. Recalling various examples of acids
2. Acids are sour in taste
3. Recognize acids in different substances
B) Conceptual knowledge on acids by;
1. Explaining the different properties of acids
2. Illustrating the various properties of acids
3. Use the concept of acids in new or unfamiliar situation

C) Procedural knowledge on acids by;
1. Doing activities by dipping litmus paper into acids
2. Raising questions on various acids.

D) Meta cognitive knowledge on acids and its role in our daily life by;
1. Focusing the idea most of frits contains acids
2. Judging the qualities of all food items in our daily life
3. Generating suggestions for the problems created by the use of acids
containing in food items.

E) Different process skills such as observing measuring, making operational
definitions, inferring communicating etc

F) Attitude towards science

PREREQISITES
Students are aware about different types of acids

TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES
Materials for experiment:

Lime watch glass, blue litmus paper, hydrochloric acid, test tube, sodium.

Discussing, demonstrating, experimenting , grouping, etc

Video presentation

CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE RESPONSE

INTRODUCTION
Teacher discuss with the students about different
types of acid they are use daily.

ORIENTATION
Teacher divides the students into groups.

PRESENTATION
ACTIVITY 1

Teacher takes a lime and cuts it into two halves and
squeezes one half into a watch glass. Note down your
observations in your science diary.

Citric acid, coca cola,
milk, soda etc

It is sour in taste

DISCUSSION POINTS

1. 1. Why do you feel the sour taste?

2. 2. Is it acidic?

3. 3. Do you feel an itching sensation?

ACTIVITY: 2
Teacher takes some hydrochloric acid in a test tube
and dips a blue litmus paper. Note down your
observation in your science diary.

4.
5.
6. DISCUSSION POINTS

1. 1. Why did the colour of the litmus paper changes?

2. 2. Will this colour change only for HCl?

3. 3. Is HCl an acid?

4.
5. CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATED
Acid turns blue litmus to red

ACTIVITY: 3
Teacher takes HCl in a test tube and sodium in
another one. Note down your observations in your

1.
2. 1. Because it is lime

2. 2. Yes

3. 3. Yes sometimes

Blue colour changes
into pink colour

4.
5. 1. As it is dipped in HCl.

6. 2. No, for all acids.
3.
4. 3.Yes

science diary.

6. DISCUSSION POINTS

1. 1. Which is the gas produced in the reaction?

2. 2. How do you prove that?

3. 3. Write the balanced equation for the reaction?

CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATED
Acids react with metals to produce hydrogen gas.

REVIEW
1. Acids react with metals to form what?
2. How can you identify an acid using litmus paper?
3. Acid react with carbonate to form which gas?
