This chapter contains instructions for unpacking the equipment and inspection for in-shipment damage. It also
includes information required to locate, assemble and install the equipment.
Chapter 3 Installation Checkout
This chapter contains instructions for doing post-installation and return to service checkout of the WX-950 using
the Goodrich Avionics SystemsWX-PA Portable Analyzer Kit.
Chapter 4 Maintenance
This chapter contains general flightline maintenance procedures. It includes periodic maintenance and
troubleshooting; and instructions for the return of defective components.
Appendix A Signal and Cable Characteristics
This appendix defines the electrical characteristics of all input and output signals.

GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Thi s secti on contai ns a functi onal descri pti on of the Stormscopemodel WX-950 Seri es I I weather
mappi ng system, outl i nes the mai n features of the system, and provi des a functi onal bl ock di agram. The
basi c WX-950 System (see tabl e 1-1) consi sts of the fol l owi ng equi pment:

1.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The WX-950 i s a TSO certi fi ed thunderstorm mappi ng system desi gned for ai rborne use. The system maps
el ectri cal di scharge acti vi ty 360 degrees around the ai rcraft to a di stance of 200 nauti cal mi l es. Fi gure 1-1
i s a si mpl i fi ed functi onal di agram that shows how the components are connected to each other and to other
ai rcraft systems.

The WX-950 i s a passi ve system that l i stens for el ectromagneti c si gnal s wi th a recei vi ng antenna. The
antenna detects i ntra-cl oud, i nter-cl oud, or cl oud-to-ground el ectri cal di scharges wi thi n a 200-nmi radi us of
the ai rcraft and sends the resul ti ng di scharge si gnal s to the di spl ay/processor. The processor di gi ti zes,
anal yzes, and converts the di scharge si gnal s i nto range and beari ng data. Thi s i nformati on i s stored i n the
storm buffer. The di spl ay shows di scharges as cel l or stri kes dependi ng on the di spl ay mode sel ected.
To mai ntai n proper storm di spl ay ori entati on duri ng turns, the WX-950 can be connected to an external
headi ng source. The headi ng source may be synchro XYZ or stepper (Ki ng KCS55) format.

1.3 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The WX-950 System consi sts of two mai n components; Di spl ay/Processor (P/N 805-10950-001/002) and NY-
163 Antenna (P/N 805-10930-001/002).
1.3.1 Display/Processor
The di spl ay/processor (see fi gure 1-2) houses the processi ng ci rcui try as wel l as the CRT di spl ay panel and
the pi l ots operati ng control s. The Di spl ay/processor can mount i n a 3ATI panel cutout from the front or
rear. No mounti ng tray i s requi red, al though a moori ng pl ate may be purchased for i ncreased stabi l i ty i n
hi gh-vi brati on envi ronments. Refer to paragraphs 2.6 and 2.9 for gui del i nes rel ati ng to mounti ng l ocati on
and i nstal l ati on. Connecti on i s made through a mati ng connector assembl y (refer to paragraph 2.8) that
attaches to a si ngl e 25 pi n D-submi ni ature connector on the back panel .

1.3.2 Antenna
The antenna (see fi gure 1-3) i s a combi ned cross-l oop and sense antenna. Connecti on i s made through a
si ngl e 10-pi n connector (refer to paragraph 2.7.1). I t i s mounted to the ai rcraft usi ng a doubl er pl ate (see
fi gure 1-4) suppl i ed wi th the i nstal l ati on ki t (see tabl e 1-1). The antenna i s seal ed agai nst envi ronmental
extremes and i s non-repai rabl e. To i nhi bi t the bui l d-up of preci pi tati on-stati c the antenna i s coated wi th
conducti ve pai nt and shoul d not be repai nted. Refer to paragraphs 2.4 and 2.5 for gui del i nes rel ati ng to
mounti ng l ocati on and i nstal l ati on.

1.6 EQUIPMENT REQUIRED NOT SUPPLIED
Ci rcui t Breaker The WX-950 i s protected vi a an i nternal fuse (see para 4.6). For external
ci rcui t breaker protecti on, a 5 A ci rcui t breaker i s recommended for 14 V
ai rcraft systems and a 3 A ci rcui t breaker for 28 V systems.

1.7 INSTALLATION APPROVAL
The i nstal l ati on of Stormscopesystems, i f not i nstal l ed under a type certi fi cate or suppl emental type
certi fi cate, must be treated as a major al terati on on F.A.A. form 337. Appl i cati on for approval may be made
at any F.A.A. Ai r Carri er, General Avi ati on, or Fl i ght Standards di stri ct Offi ce.
1.8 WARRANTY INFORMATION
The StormscopeWX-950 Weather Mappi ng System i s warranted for two years from the date of
i nstal l ati on (not to exceed 30 months from the date of shi pment from Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems) subject to
the fol l owi ng l i mi tati ons.
1.8.1 Warranty Statement
Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems, (herei nafter cal l ed Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems), warrants each i tem of new
equi pment manufactured or sol d by Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems to be free from defects i n materi al and
workmanshi p, under normal use as i ntended, for a peri od of 30 months from date of shi pment by Goodri ch
Avi oni cs Systems to an authori zed faci l i ty, or 24 months from date of i nstal l ati on by an authori zed faci l i ty,
whi chever occurs fi rst. No cl ai m for breach of warranti es wi l l be al l owed unl ess Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems
i s noti fi ed thereof, i n wri ti ng, wi thi n thi rty (30) days after the materi al or workmanshi p defect i s found.
The obl i gati on of Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems shal l be l i mi ted to repl aci ng or repai ri ng at i ts factory the
equi pment found defecti ve under terms of thi s warranty certi fi cate; provi di ng that such equi pment i s
returned i n an approved shi ppi ng contai ner, transportati on charges prepai d, to Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems,

INSTALLATION
2.1 INTRODUCTION

2.2 UNPACKING AND INSPECTING
CAUTION
The di spl ay/processor and antenna are sensi ti ve to el ectrostati c di scharge
(ESD) and may be damaged i f not handl ed correctl y. Do not remove protecti ve
covers from el ectri cal connectors duri ng unpacki ng. Touchi ng an exposed
connector may cause el ectrostati c damage to equi pment.
Careful l y unpack the system and note any damage to shi ppi ng contai ners or equi pment. Vi sual l y i nspect
each component for evi dence of damage. Compare the equi pment recei ved wi th that noted on the packi ng
l i st. I mmedi atel y report any mi ssi ng i tems or evi dence of damage to the carri er maki ng the del i very. To
justi fy a cl ai m, retai n the ori gi nal shi ppi ng contai ner and al l packi ng materi al s.
Every effort shoul d be made to retai n the ori gi nal shi ppi ng contai ners for storage. I f the ori gi nal contai ners
are not avai l abl e, a separate cardboard contai ner shoul d be prepared that i s l arge enough to accommodate
suffi ci ent packi ng materi al to prevent movement. The ambi ent temperature of the storage area shoul d not
fal l bel ow -55 C (-65 F) or ri se above 70 (158 F).
2.3 PRE-INSTALLATION TEST PROCEDURE
Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems recommends testi ng each di spl ay/processor and antenna i mmedi atel y upon
recei pt. The pre-i nstal l ati on test procedure veri fi es operati on of the system and may save val uabl e
i nstal l ati on ti me by detecti ng hi dden damage that may have occurred duri ng shi pment.
2.3.1 Equipment Required
a. System components to be tested.

b. DC Power Suppl y: 12 to 28 VDC, 30W, or equi val ent (not suppl i ed).

2.3.2 Test Procedure
CAUTION
Before connecti ng/di sconnecti ng cabl es, ensure that al l power i s removed.
1. Connect the equi pment as shown i n fi gure 2-2.

2. Rotate the OFF/BRT knob cl ockwi se about 180 degrees. After approxi matel y 15 seconds, the
i ni ti al i zati on screen wi l l be di spl ayed. Duri ng i ni ti al i zati on, the system runs a seri es of sel f-tests to
ensure that al l functi ons are operati ng properl y. These tests are desi gned to check the antenna,
processor, and associ ated hardware.
3. I f no faul ts are detected, at compl eti on of the sel f-test an ALL TESTS PASSED message wi l l be
di spl ayed.

4. After compl eti on of the sel f-test, veri fy that the WX-950 i s i n the weather mappi ng mode; 200 nmi ,
360 vi ew.
5. Veri fy that cl ockwi se rotati on of the OFF/BRT knob i ncreases di spl ay bri ghtness and counter-
cl ockwi se rotati on decreases bri ghtness. The screen shoul d be compl etel y dark wi th the control ful l y
counter-cl ockwi se. Adjust to a comfortabl e vi ewi ng l evel .
NOTE
Paragraph 3.2 contai ns a descri pti on of al l operati ng control s.
6. Veri fy operati on of the pushbuttons:
a. Press softkey (A), i .e., MENU. Thi s shoul d cause the system menu to be di spl ayed wi th Weather
Vi ew menu i tem hi ghl i ghted.
b. Press softkey (B), i .e., 360. The di spl ay shoul d return to the weather mappi ng mode, 360
Weather Vi ew at the 200 nmi range.
c. Press softkey (C), i .e., down-arrow. The weather vi ew range shoul d change to 100 nmi .
d. Press softkey (D), i .e, up-arrow. The weather vi ew range shoul d return to 200 nmi .
7. I f correct resul ts are obtai ned, the system i s operati ng properl y. I mmedi atel y report any probl ems to
our Customer Servi ce Department at 1-800-453-0288 or 1-616-949-6600.
2.4 ANTENNA LOCATION
Because Stormscopeweather mappi ng systems detect el ectri cal di scharge acti vi ty, antenna pl acement
rel ati ve to other acti ve el ectri cal components i s cri ti cal . The antenna must be pl aced at a l ocati on that i s
free from excessi ve el ectri cal i nterference. The i deal l ocati on vari es from ai rcraft to ai rcraft. To ensure an
i nterference-free antenna l ocati on, every ai rcraft must be ski mapped pri or to i nstal l ati on of the
Stormscopeantenna. The ski nmap must be done wi th the engi nes and al l el ectri cal systems operati ng.
Refer to the WX-SM Ski nmapper I nstructi on Manual (P/N 78-8060-5874-5).
NOTE
The Stormscoperequi rement for an antenna ground pl ane and a noi se free
envi ronment compl i cates i nstal l ati on i n ai rcraft wi th wood, fabri c or
composi te constructi on. Each ai rcraft needs to be anal yzed i ndi vi dual l y for
the best antenna l ocati on. Before starti ng an i nstal l ati on i n one of these

2.4.2 Skin Current

current path between the battery and al ternator,
and the battery and bl ower motors or other heavy

2.4.3 Skinmapping
I n order to reduce potenti al i nterference probl ems, some of whi ch are evi dent onl y duri ng fl i ght, a ski nmap
of the ai rcraft must be performed (wi th engi nes and al l el ectri cal systems operati ng) pri or to every
i nstal l ati on. Thi s procedure wi l l save i nstal l ati on ti me by avoi di ng the necessi ty for such thi ngs as antenna
rel ocati on. A WX-SM Ski nmapper (Goodri ch Avi oni cs Systems P/N 78-8060-5859-6, wi th Mod 2 i nstal l ed)
must be used to veri fy the sui tabi l i ty of a sel ected antenna l ocati on before proceedi ng wi th the i nstal l ati on.
Thi s must be done even i f al l the other pl acement cri teri a are met.
2.4.4 Ground Plane
The antenna must mount i n a l ocati on wi th a
mi ni mum of 12 i nches (30 cm) conti nuous
al umi num ground pl ane i n al l di recti ons. Avoi d

necessary to cut the doubl er pl ate to ensure proper fi t.)
2. Attach the doubl er pl ate to the i nsi de of the fusel age as shown i n fi gure 2-4.
3. Mount the antenna to the ai rcraft as shown i n fi gure 2-4.
CAUTION
1. Do not pai nt the antenna. I t has been coated wi th a speci al conducti ve pai nt to
i nhi bi t the bui l d-up of preci pi tati on-stati c.
2. Do not over-ti ghten the antenna mounti ng screws duri ng i nstal l ati on on convex
surfaces. Doi ng so may cause stress cracks and shorten the l i fe of the antenna.
3. To ensure a good el ectri cal ground connecti on (metal -to-metal contact) remove the
pai nt from the ai rcraft ski n under the doubl e pl ate mounti ng screws and prepare the
surface wi th Al odi neNo. 1001. Fai l ure to provi de a good ground connecti on may
affect system performance.

2.6 DISPLAY/PROCESSOR LOCATION

Panel Depth Adequate depth must be avai l abl e behi nd the i nstrument panel to al l ow for

Remember, a servi ce l oop i s necessary to al l ow access to the di spl ay
connector when removi ng or i nserti ng i t i nto the i nstrument panel .
Cool i ng Whi l e the di spl ay has no speci al cool i ng requi rements, i t shoul d be mounted
to permi t adequate ai r ci rcul ati on. Al l ow at l east i nch of cl earance above
and bel ow the i nstrument for ai r ci rcul ati on.
Vi ewi ng Angl e The vi ewi ng angl e for the di spl ay i s not a cri ti cal factor. The most favorabl e
mounti ng posi ti on woul d be near eye l evel and no more than arms l ength
from the pri nci pal user of the i nstrument.

2.7.2 Power Cable
The power cabl e (not suppl i ed) runs from the mati ng connector to the ai rcraft ci rcui t breaker panel . For the
power cabl e, use twi sted shi el ded pai r, #20 AWG. The posi ti ve wi re connects to the avi oni cs ci rcui t breaker.
The negati ve wi re connects to ai rframe ground. I f ai rframe ground i s not avai l abl e, run a separate wi re to
power ground at the battery.
CAUTION
Reversi ng the power l eads wi l l cause an i nternal fuse to bl ow. Fuse
repl acement procedures are detai l ed i n chapter 4.

INSTALLATION CHECKOUT
3.1 INTRODUCTION
Thi s secti on contai ns i nstructi ons for post-i nstal l ati on checkout of the WX-950. Compl ete operati ng

3.3 POST INSTALLATION CHECKOUT
Thi s procedure wi l l val i date the i nstal l ati on and return to servi ce of the WX-950.
1. Rotate the OFF/BRT knob cl ockwi se about 180 degrees. After approxi matel y 15 seconds, the
i ni ti al i zati on screen (see fi gure 3-2) wi l l be di spl ayed. Duri ng i ni ti al i zati on, the system runs a seri es of
sel f-tests to ensure that al l functi ons are operati ng properl y. These tests are desi gned to check the
antenna, processor, and associ ated hardware.

c. Press softkey (C), i .e., down-arrow. The weather vi ew range shoul d change to 100 nmi .
d. Press softkey (D), i .e., up-arrow. The weather vi ew range shoul d return to 200 nmi .
7. Access the Servi ce Menu (refer to paragraph 4.4) and veri fy the i nformati on (i .e., headi ng source,
headi ng fl ag, jumper sense, headi ng, i nhi bi t l i ne and antenna mounti ng l ocati on) i denti fi ed on System
Data Page 2 of 3).
NOTE

8. From the Servi ce Menu, enter the noi se moni tor mode.
9. Repeatedl y key the ai rcraft communi cati ons radi o mi crophone:
a. I f keyi ng the transmi tter does not cause stri ke data to appear on the CRT, proceed to step 13.
b. I f stri ke data appears on the CRT when the transmi tter i s keyed, wi re the i nhi bi t l i ne to the
mi crophone key swi tch (see fi gure 2-5).
10. From the Servi ce Menu, access System Data Page 2 of 3 and veri fy that when the transmi tter i s keyed
the state of the I nhi bi t Li ne transi sti ons from off to on.
11. From the Servi ce Menu, enter the noi se moni tor mode.

12. Repeatedl y key the ai rcraft communi cati ons radi o mi crophone:
a. I f keyi ng the transmi tter does not cause stri ke data to appear on the CRT, proceed to step 13.
b. I f stri ke data appears on the CRT when the transmi tter i s keyed:

Check the routi ng of the stormscope antenna cabl e wi th respect to the ai rcraft
communi cati on system antenna cabl es.

13. To veri fy antenna ori entati on and the i ntegri ty of the antenna wi ri ng, a antenna phase check must be
performed usi ng at l east the four cardi nal headi ngs (000, 090, 180, and 270) and usi ng the fol l owi ng
WX-PA ranges: 120, 75, and 30 nmi . Refer to fi gure 3-7 for the test setup.

a. Connect the WX-PA cabl e to the WX-PA antenna.
b. Refer to fi gure 3-8 and posi ti on the WX-PA antenna on the system antenna. Make sure the
connecti on i s ti ght. I f necessary, use tape to secure the WX-PA antenna.

e. Power up the WX-PA.
f. Power up the WX-950. After compl eti on of the sel f-test, veri fy that the WX-950 i s i n the weather
mappi ng mode (i .e., 360 Weather Vi ew at the 200 nmi range, see fi gure 3-6).
g. Set the WX-950 to the STRI KE di spl ay mode; 100 nmi range. To toggl e between the cel l and
stri ke modes, press the button l abel ed CELL or STRI KE. Press the arrow keys to step through
the operati ng ranges.
h. Sel ect the Conti nuous Out mode di spl ayed on the WX-PA menu and press MENU/ENTR.

4.3 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

4.3.1 Display/Processor
1. Check that cabl e i s properl y mated and secured.
2. Check to ensure uni t i s properl y pl aced and secured to the i nstrument panel .

El ectri cal noi se can be coupl ed i nto the WX-950 system by several avenues:
Radi ati on i nto the Antenna.
Groundi ng probl ems due to poor ai rframe bondi ng.
Faul ty component i nterference source.
Excessi ve ri ppl e on the A+ l i ne to the Processor.
The fol l owi ng procedures are i ntended to faci l i tate the resol uti on of suspected noi se probl ems.
1. Access the servi ce menu (refer to paragraph 4.4) and run the noi se moni tor (refer to paragraph 4.4.4)
to reproduce the probl em on the ground.
I f a probl em cannot be reproduced on the ground, schedul e a fl i ght test for further
troubl eshooti ng.
2. To check for i nterference radi ated i nto the antenna or cabl e:
a. Use a WX-SM Ski nmapper. The Ski nmapper checks for radi ated noi se onl y.
b. To i sol ate noi se to antenna or cabl e, repl ace the antenna wi th the WX-900 connector pod (P/N
78-8060-6001-4). Repeat noi se check. I f the noi se goes away, the probl em i s noi se radi ated i nto
the antenna.
3. I sol ate the ai rcraft system that generates the noi se.
4. Repai r, repl ace, or rel ocate the offendi ng source, or rel ocate the Stormscope antenna or cabl e, i f
necessary.
5. Check potenti al noi se sources cl ose to the system (cabl es, boxes, components).
6. I t may be necessary to rel ocate the antenna or offendi ng devi ce (e.g., cabl es, communi cati ons antenna).
7. Al l grounds must conform to cabl i ng procedures detai l ed i n chapter 2 (I nstal l ati on - refer to
paragraphs 2.7 and 2.8). The i nterference source must be properl y grounded. I t may be necessary to
rel ocate the WX-950 system ai rframe grounds, or ai rframe grounds on the i nterference source.
8. Poweri ng the processor from an i sol ated DC power source may i denti fy excessi ve ri ppl e on the A+ l i ne
as an i nterference source. I t may be necessary to i nstal l an i n-l i ne fi l ter on the processor, or on the
i nterference source.

4.7 FUSE REPLACEMENT
To repl ace the i nternal fuse (P/N 204-10021-001, Li ttl e Fuse Type 473,005):
1. Pl ace the uni t on a workbench wi th an anti stati c pad.
2. Remove si x screws that secure the housi ng to the chassi s (see fi gure 4-9).

4. Locate fuse F1. Unsol der and remove the fuse. Use a de-sol deri ng tool to remove excess sol der.

that the external connector and al i gnment pi ns fi t through the openi ngs.
