Kate Nash Do-Wah-Doo

Genre: Indie pop

Narrative theory
Todorovs narrative theory can be applied to this music video with his 3 ideas of equilibrium,
disequilibrium and resolution. The equilibrium of the music video is the crush and affection
that Kate Nash shows for one of her colleagues which can be seen when she passes him and
makes eye contact with him. The disequilibrium can be shown in this music video as another
of Kate Nashs colleagues tries to get in the way of the two, and flirts with the man that Kate
Nash has affection towards. The resolution of this music video would be that in the end Kate
Nash and the man both get together and kiss, showing how equilibrium has returned.
EQUILIBRIUM DISEQUILIBRIUM RESOLUTION

Propps character types theory can be applied to this music video as different styles of
character are shown in this music video. For example, the girl who gets in the way of Kate
Nash and the man that she wants to be with is shown as the villain, as she has a struggle
with the hero by being bitchy and mean towards her. The man that Kate Nash wants to be
with is shown as the princess in this music video, as he is shown as helpless by being in
between the feud with Kate Nash and the other girl. Finally, Kate Nash is shown as the hero
in this music video, as she eventually gets the princess at the end, and is generally shown as
the good person in this video. It could also be said that the girl that gets in between Kate
Nash and the man is shown as the false hero, as well as the villain, due to the fact that she
pretends that shes nice to everyone and reacts like a real hero, however is pretending the
whole time.
VILLAIN/ HERO PRINCESS
FALSE HERO

Levi-Strauss binary opposites theory can be applied to this music video as he said that these
opposite can reveal the conflicts that are within a narrative. He also said that by looking at
these opposites, you are able to determine which in the pair is dominant and how the
conflicts can be resolved and revealed at the end of a narrative. An example of a binary
opposite that is used in this music video is the idea of good vs evil in the sense that Kate
Nash is the good and the girl who is trying to get the man is the evil. We are able to see by
the fact that Kate Nash eventually ends up with the man that she is the dominant one in this
binary opposite. Another binary opposite that is used in this music video is man vs woman.
The man that Kate Nash wants and Kate Nash herself would be the two people in this
opposite. The man is shown as the dominant one in this opposition as he has the power
because everybody wants him.
GOOD VS EVIL. GIRL VS BOY.

Barthes 5 narrative codes can be applied the Do-Wah-Doo video by Kate Nash in many
different ways. The idea of action can be applied in this music video as by the expression on
the blonde haired girls face and the actions
and the way that she treats Kate Nash in this
music video that she dislikes her a lot. That
gives us the impression that they have had a
previous feud or that the girl is in charge of
Kate Nash and their job.

The narrative theory of enigma can be shown in this music video in the way that we are
shown multiple shots of Kate Nash talking to the man that she wants to be with. This shows
Kate Nashs affection for the boy, and makes us aware
that she likes him, along with the lyrics that accompany
the narrative. This constantly makes the audience
wonder if the couple will eventually get together.
Audience theories
Hypodermic Needle Model means for the media to inject its message directly into the
audience leaving the audience to respond to this message. This can be applied to Kate
Nashs music video as we are able to see how the
Kate Nash tries to get the man and tries to win him
over instead of the blonde haired getting the man.
This allows the audience to see how much Kate Nash
likes the man, and leaves the audience to respond in
a way that makes them empathise with Kate Nash.

Halls theory of Encoding and Decoding can be
applied to this music video as this video allows the
audience to respond to the video in different ways.
For example some people may see this music video
in a dominant way. This means that the audience
understands and receives the text, as well as
accepting the preferred reading of the video. For
example, the audience would accept the understand the fact that the girl fancies the boy
and wants to be with him.
Uses and Gratification model this means how the audience makes use of what it has to
offer as they have expectations of what they
expect to be satisfied. This can be applied to Kate
Nashs music video as there is a conflict between
the blonde haired girl and Kate Nash, however
towards the end of the narrative we see how this is
resolved as Kate Nash gets what she wants the
man. This creates social interaction between the
audience and the narrative music video as it allows
the audience to understand what is going on. Some audience members use this video for
entertainment.
Social and cultural context Morleys theory can be
applied to this music video as it is a reception theory
meaning the way that the audience receives the text
due to their position in society. For example, this can
be applied to this music video as if someone is slightly
stuck up or posh like the blonde girl in this video is,
they may see this video in a completely different way,
and think that the blonde woman is in the right in this scenario.
Genre Theories
INSTITUTION John Ellis theory says that in similar texts of the same genre, they feature
the same plot, however always have slightly different story line. This can be applied to this
music video, for example, in this music video, it is the blonde girl who is above Kate Nash,
and they both want the boy, however the boy hasnt chosen. This can be compared to
Taylor Swifts You Belong With Me video, in which the boy (princess) has a girlfriend who
Taylor Swift doesnt like and is going against as she herself wants the boy.
AUDIENCE Kings theory says that people expect to see certain codes and conventions for
specific texts. This can be applied to this music video as due to it being an indie pop video,
the audience will expect to see certain props, for example, outfits which fit in with a certain
theme. In this video, these are Flight attendant outfits. This can be compared to The Killers
All These Things That I Have Done video, in which the band all wear cowboy outfits to fit
into the certain theme of the video.
RITUAL Kapsis theory says that things that happen in society will influence what happens
in genres and that the audience want escapism and a genre that they are able to relate to in
real life. This can be applied to this music video as people will be able to relate to the
scenario of having to compete with a girl for someone that they want to be with. We can
see how this is used in other music videos of the genre, for example Taylor Swifts video.
CLASSIFICATION AND INTERPRETATION Ryalls theory is
that the genre can be defined by the artist, media text
and product. This can be applied to Kate Nashs video as
she is an indie pop artist and has had other songs and
records out that are similar to Do-Wah-Do for example,
Foundations. This allows the audience to know that songs
that are made by this artist will be similar to her previous
hits.

Representation theories
Saussures theory of semiotics can be applied to this music video as it is the study of signs
that are seen and used in every day life. These can be
words or body language that gives off a creative meaning.
We are seen how this is used in Kate Nashs music video by
the way that she looks down and smiles when talking to the
boy. This tells the audience about her affection towards the
boy and through this sign allows the audience to know that
she wants to be with the boy, which is revealed towards
the end of the narrative.
Mulveys theory of the male gaze can be applied to this music video by Kate Nash as she
says it is a feminist theory in which women are made to
look sexually desirable or sexually submissive in music
videos so as to appeal to men. This can be applied to this
music video as we are able to see how the blonde haired
girl is wearing a lot of makeup. This makes her seem
more attractive and will therefore make people think that
she is more sexually attractive and will like to look at her.

Dyers theory of star theory can be applied to this music video as he says that the medias
representations often use stereotypes
as cultural shorthand. For example, this
can be applied to this music video by
the way that the woman are acting as
Flight attendants. Due to the outfits
that the women are wearing and the
actions that they are doing indicates to
the audience that they are sexy and
makes them look attractive to people
watching.

Baudrillards theory of simulacra theory can be applied to this
music video as he says that society has become so reliant on the
representation that they have lost contact with what is real. For
example, Kate Nash has been made to look sexy and attractive in
this video, where as in reality she would not likely wear a flight
attendants outfit, and we know that this is not her real
profession as she is an artist.
