4. It is a fact that the world we live in is lacking
moral values. Here, the need for moral education
in schools becomes of utmost importance.
Moral education teaches students moral values.
Values are a set of guidelines that a human
being learns to follow. Nobody is born with
moral content in him. It is inculcated in him
by his education and experience in life. Hence,
it is necessary to teach moral values from
the very beginning of the childhood. We see
sharp deterioration of moral values in our
day-to-day life. Students fail to come to terms
with morals because they are not aware of them.
Teachers can play a significant role in imparting
moral education to their students. By educating
them about moral and their values in life they
can make them fit for the society as well as the
nation.

Subject : Poster Exhibition in School
My dear brother
Got your letter and became glad to know
that you all are well. I was busy with a
poster exhibition. It was organised by our
school on the subject of 64 years of Indias
independence. The students and artists, on
the one hand, praised the big achievements
of India but, on the other, they criticised the
government for its failure to root out
corruption from the country through their
exhibits. There were several cartoons and
models that showed dissatisfaction over the
faulty government machinery.
There was a section on Indias freedom
struggle and sacrifices made by freedom
fighters. Our country has achieved a
lot since independence in the field of
education, computers, industries, science
and technology. These great achievements
were beautifully shown through pictures
and graphs.
Yours affectionately

4. A poor peasant had a goose. It was a spectacular
goose. It used to lay a golden egg daily which the
farmer sold and earned money. But he was greedy.
He wanted to become rich overnight. He planned
to get all the golden eggs in one go. He thought of
a plan. He decided to kill the goose to get all the
golden eggs at once. The next morning, he
appeared before the goose with a knife in his hands.
The farmer killed the goose because of his greed.
He did not get even a single golden goose. His
expectation to get all the golden eggs shattered. He
repented and cried bitterly on his barbarous act.
But it was too late. The goose that laid a golden egg
daily was no more. Now the farmer was sad and
disappointed. He repented over his foolishness.
Moral: Dont be greedy.

2. Floods are common in our country. They cause a
huge loss of life and property. Last Sunday I along
with my team members visited a flood-affected area
in a remote village of Bihar. We got shocked to see
the miserable condition of the affected people. They
were rendered homeless. They had nothing to eat.
Their crops were damaged. They were totally
helpless. However, the government officials were
seen doing their job promptly. They had made
arrangements for a big camp. We assisted them in
their work. We supplied free food to the affected
people. The people in the camp were given medical
aid too. The government gave financial aid to the
farmers. Those who had become homeless were
given money to build their houses.

2. The graph indicates a trend of the rise and fall in the
number of students during the last 6 years from 2005
to 2010. The number of students who joined school in
2005 was 350 but it dropped to 300 in 2006. However,
it rose to more than 400 in 2007 and even more to
500 in 2008. Though it again came down to 400 in
2009. It saw a great rise to nearly 600 in 2010. It
clearly shows that consciousness towards studies is on
the rise. In comparison to this the number of
students leaving the school is almost consistent and
never crossed 500 mark. In 2005, it was slightly more
than 200 and still it remained below 500 in 2010 with
marginal differences in the past.

My dear Bittoo
Got your letter and became upset to know that you
frequently fall ill. What may be the reason? So far
I think your excess reading habit is the single
cause behind your ill health. You are so sincere
and attentive to your studies. It is very good. But
it is not good that you devote all your leisure time
in reading other books. This will affect your mental
and physical growth. Being a book-worm is not good
at all. You should spend some time in other
activities too. Games are very important in
students life. They make them active and strong.
They teach them many good lessons. Hence, I
would like to advise you to take part in games in
your leisure time.
I hope you will follow my advice.
With best wishes

4. CONSERVATION OF ENVIRONMENT
Hints:
Environment is an essential component of life.
There is an intricate relationship between the
two.
Environment provides all support to our life.
We create environment.
Good or bad environment depends upon us.
We have damaged the environment a lot by
cutting trees, polluting rivers, establishing so
many industries, etc.
It is hazardous. As a result, we face global
warming.
We have damaged ozone layer.
Melting ice rapidly causes rising water level.
We face frequent flood.
We will be doomed if we dont repair the loss
and save environment.

Shankar : I cant enjoy in the smoky air of a
town. There is such a rush on the
road. The entire atmosphere is full of
noise. Im quite alright in my village.
It is so quiet and the atmosphere is so
clean and pollution free.
Ravi : Of course, you have the advantage of
pure air and water in the country
but your life must be very dull there.
A country lacks theatres, cinema
halls, malls, etc.
Shankar : My life is not dull at all. I have my
huge garden where I spend a lot
of time in close company of the
nature. I enjoy spending time in
gardening.
Ravi : I dont think that a country life is
full of enjoyment and merry
making. Our town is well equipped
with all the facilities. The roads are
wide and concrete. There is
electricity for most of the time.
Shankar : Please dont enlist the facilities. I
know the drawbacks of a town. My
village is better than your town
because it is much healthier.

7. AIR POLLUTION
Pollution is a big problem before the world. Today,
everything is polluted. The air we breathe in, the
water we drink, the earth on which we live are all
polluted. Air pollution is the most dangerous form
of pollution because we cannot control the air we
breathe. The agents of air pollution are numerous.
The smoke emitted by the chimneys of mills and
factories and diesel smoke from buses, cars,
aeroplanes, motor-cars and scooters are polluting
the air. During winters we see thick smoke all over
the city. This causes great health problems,
especially breathing trouble. Air pollution is at peak
in big cities and metros. Hence, it is the need of
the hour to be aware about the bad effects of air
pollution. If we dont check it immediately, we will
fall in dangerous situation. We should encourage
tree plantation. We should expand green cover. We
should also minimise the use of private vehicles.

I was standing near a jewellery shop because my
colleague has to come there. Suddenly, I saw some
armed robbers entered the jewellery shop. The
owner of the shop tried to save himself and his
shop by giving the robbers some cash money. But
they (robbers) wanted more and more. They began
to loot the shop. The helpless owner requested
them not to do so but they didnt listen to him. They
told the owner to give them the key of the locker.
The owner showed unwillingness. As a result, he
became the victim of their firing. The robbers then
ran away with valuables. I had already telephoned
the police. But they arrived late. However, they
registered a case against the robbers and assured

4. THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF
VIEWING TELEVISION
Undoubtedly, television is a popular source of
entertainment. Media has become very
influential in this era of communication. But,
unfortunately, children get addicted to TV
Programmes and dont concentrate on studies.
Their attention gets diverted and they try to
learn the tricks and stunts shown on the TV
screens. They imitate them blindly and spend
most of the time watching television. It has been
found that children are not interested in playing
in the ground. They wish to watch TV serials
within the four walls of the house. It is
scientifically proven fact that those who dont
play or take exercise cannot remain healthy. The
often quoted saying is A healthy mind lives in a
sound body. Students of todays world enjoy fast
food, wear fashionable clothes, focus on social
status and forget the cultural and human values.
They have become impatient and intolerant. The
primary source of making the children violent is
television. The TV serials and movies are not
inspiring. They do not make our children morally
sound. The glamorous world of media attracts
them and ruin their future.

23 July, 1856 in the coastal town of Ratnagiri in
Maharastra. He was brought up in an orthodox
family where observing traditions and rituals
was stressed. His father, Gangadhar Pant, was a
schoolmaster. Tilak established the New English
School in 1880. A major step in the cause of
education was the founding of the Deccan
Education Society in 1885. Tilak was arrested on
27 July, 1897 in Bombay on charges of sedition.
He was sentenced to 18 months of rigorous
imprisonment. At the Surat Congress session in

I shall have it. Tilak had various attacks of
fever. On July 26, 1920 his fever took a serious
turn. On 1 August, 1920 Lokamanya breathed his
last.

It is to inform you that the open manholes have

drivers in our colony. There are innumerous
instances of accidents that took place because of
the open manholes. There are no street lights
available in the colony. So, it becomes difficult for

great problems especially during the rainy season.
The residents of the colony are perturbed because
of the casualties due to open manholes. You are

4. Good morning every body!
Good manners make a complete man. Without
them it is difficult to prosper in life. They lend
colour and grace to life. Hence, it is essential to
cultivate good manners in children. Good manners
alone can differentiate a cultured man from an
uncultured one. Now, the question arises What
are good manners? The very first principle that
underlies good manners is that we should have and
show consideration for the feeling of others. We
should not try to thrust our opinion on others.
Next, we should be sympathetic and compassionate
towards those who are weak and old. We should be
humble and polite. We should not try to harm one's
dignity and repute. Showing courtesy is also an
important aspect of good manners. We, the
students, should take a vow to develop all the
principles of good manners and follow them
seriously.
UNIT ASSIGNMENT 5
1. 10 December, 2011
8:30 p.m.
The Supreme Court has issued its statement that
the employers cannot recruit the children in their
factories. But the factory owners of Noida are
violating the order of the Supreme Court. They
have recruited the cute kids to work in the factory
for 8-10 hours a day. They know that the children
are ignorant about the rules and regulations
formulated for workers. These ignorant child-
workers are not paid the minimum salary specified
for a worker. They work in industries where
tobacco items are produced. Working in a tobacco
industry is hazardous to health. They get addicted
to smoking and other bad habits. This is the
condition of our nations future.

4. My final examination is at hand. Whenever I fall in
such a situation I become nervous. This time too I
am feeling very disturbed. I went to a nearby
temple and offered puja there in hope of mental
peace. But it didnt help me at all. I am still
restless. I consulted an astrologer. Again it proved
in vain. I went to a counsellor, who suggested me
to take a sound sleep and concentrate on studies.
His suggestion worked. I started feeling better.
Now I am not at all nervous. I am completely
relaxed. I went to the school happily and did very
well in the examination.

It is to bring to your kind notice that I am a
student of your school studying in VII-B. My

test last Sunday. He announced that those who
woul d remai n absent woul d pay a f i ne of

in the test and the teacher has imposed fine
on me. My parents are very poor and they

the teacher.
So, I request you to remit my fine. I assure you
that I will come to school regularly and appear in
all the tests.

4. MOTHERS DAY
Mothers Day is the most valued day in everybodys
life. This day is celebrated globally on the second
Sunday of May every year. The day reminds us the
role of a mother in the life of a child. It is she who
takes the maximum pains in shaping her child. She
wishes to make her child the most adorable one in
the society. And for that, she leaves no stone
unturned. She can sacrifice everything for the sake
of her child. Perhaps, therefore, she is given the
most honourable place everywhere on the earth.
Her selfless work for her child is really
praiseworthy. The whole world salutes her with
utmost regard.

Visiting native place is in itself very soothing.
Since my native place is in a remote rural area,
I had never gone there before. But I always
wished to see this place with my own eyes. So,
during this summer vacation I went there for a
few days. As soon as I set my feet on the soil of
my native place, a large number of my relatives
and other village people came to welcome me. I
got overwhelmed to see their emotions and
simplicity. They offered me a variety of foods,
which I enjoyed wholeheartedly.

Sir
It is to bring to your notice that the bus
stand of the locality is packed with filth.
There is a lot of garbage on the main road
just near the bus stand. It gives very foul
smell. The condition of the road is also
deteriorating. It has become the source of

throw garbage on the streets and roads. The
sweepers of municipal committee do not
heed to the problem. They do not fulfil their
duty sincerely. I request you to look into
the matter and do the needful to save the
people of the city from diseases.
