Ayon pa sa nagkakaisang pahayag,
“ang Maguindanao massacre ay nanga-
ngailangan ng mabilisang katarungan, na
maihahatid lamang sa pamamagitan ng

isasagawa sa Disyembre 9.
Ang mga mamamahayag sa Bulacan ay
nagpahayag ng pagkondena sa karumal-
dumal na pamamaslang nang sila’y
magsagawa ng indignation rally sa Heroes
may kredibilidad at malayang proseso, na
maisasagawa lamang kung hindi maki-
kialam ang administrasyon ng pamaha-
laang salat sa tiwala ng tao.”
Hinamon din nila si Arroyo at iba pang
namumuno ng pamahalaan na magbitiw
sa tungkuling kung hindi maibibigay ang
mga sumusunod na kahilingan.

guindanao Massacre at nag-alay ng
panalangin para sa mga biktima at naulila,
at nagsindi ng kandila para sa kapa-
yapaan.
Batay sa tala ng National Union of
Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP),
umabot sa 57 katao ang biktima sa

maslang sa Maguindanao sa pamamagitan
ng pag-usig at pag-aresto sa mga taong
sangkot sa krimen.
Namahagi na rin ng liham ang IFJ sa
kanilang mga kasapi sa iba’t ibang bansa
sa Asya at nakapaligid sa Dagat Pacifico.
Ayon sa IFJ, ang mga nasabing liham
ay ihahatid ng kanilang mga kasapi sa mga
embahada ng Pilipinas at sa iba’t ibang
at konsiyensiya ng bayan!
Maguindanao Massacre, kung saan ay 30
na ang nakilalang mamamahayag na
pinaslang, dalawa ang abogada, tatlo ay
kaanak ng pamilya Mangudadatu, saman-
talang ang iba pa ay hindi pa nakikilala.
Ang mga biktima ay lulan ng limang

practice is spotty.

Nor did they ensure rights of
non-Muslims, in Brunei, to be
educated in faiths of their choos-
ing.
Thailand, Indonesia and the
Philippines, allow “generally free
practice of religion”. There is now
more elbow room in Vietnam.
Institutionalized bias in Malay-
sia shows little sign of erosion.
“The right to believe or not to
believe, without fear of govern-
ment interference or restriction,
provides an essential foundation
for human dignity, robust civil
society, and sustainable democ-
racy,” it stresses.

WE seem to be swinging from one
outrage to another these days. In
the local scene, we just had that
shocking massacre in
Maguindanao. Everything in it
was just unspeakable. Is it still
possible to have such brutality at
this stage of our national life?
This looks like our version of
America’s 9/11 carnage. The de-
liberate malice put into it, the
conscience-less killing of every-
one in the group irrespective of
whatever, in short, barbarianism
in its distilled form, is simply too
much for an average heart to
bear.
I normally don’t like to talk
about this kind of events. Silence
is a preferable option if only to
lighten the ugly scenario. Talk-
ing adds fuel rather than douses
water to the sickening situation.
But this one grates at the guts
and one simply has to instinc-
tively react.

will yield us tremendous lessons

But as if this black-eye to hu-
manity is not yet enough, we also
are now witnessing another form
of barbarianism in the world

knowledge, but, sadly, not much
more.

ics about global warming and cli-
mate change are not all true.

their position, have been

massive and systematic effort to
manipulate the public to believe

In Laos, “officials generally

religious groups to worship, al-
beit within strict constraints.”
Government, however, pro-
motes Buddhism. And this gave
the religion an elevated status.

of “intolerance for minority reli-
gious practice”, particularly Prot-
estants. “Local officials pressured
Protestants in some villages to
renounce their faith on threat of
arrest or forceful eviction.”
Provisions in Malaysia’s con-
stitution crimps its overarching
declaration for religious freedom.
Islam is designated as “religion
of the Federation”. Like it or not,
all ethnic Malays are defined as
Muslim. Government regulates
Islamic religious affairs. It pro-
hibits propagation of other faiths
among Muslims.
There were few reports of so-
cietal abuses or discrimination
based on religious affiliation, be-
lief, or practice. Minorities re-
mained generally free to practice
their beliefs.
But Shari’a courts prohibit
officially registered Muslims from

Though there are many global
warming skeptics who also are
scientists, these have been effec-
tively sidelined and projected as
obstructionists to what they call
as obvious pieces of evidence of
global warming.
Al Gore, the self-appointed
patriarch of this group, managed
to make the film, “The Inconve-
nient Truth,” that mesmerized a
lot of people and won him a Nobel
Prize. I heard that he is raking
in a lot of moolah!
But the first time I heard
about global warming, I checked
the relevant write-ups in the
Internet, and while I followed the
arguments of the supporters, I
was also aware that there were
dissenters who sounded to me
also serious.
I was amazed that the doubt-
ers and deniers were not given a
fair chance to present their ideas

A Challenge
of Conscience
EDITOR’S NOTE: Following is the statement issued by national media
organizations six days after the November 23 Maguindanao massa-
cre “calling for swift justice, which can only be achieved through a
credible and independent process, which in turn can only be achieved
without the hand of this government.”
THE brutal, indiscriminate mass murder on Monday in
Ampatuan town, in Maguindanao province, raises the
ultimate challenge of conscience. It carries the culture
of impunity at work in this country to such levels of hor-
ror that, if it remains unpunished for long, can send the
nation into an inexorable descent into absolute dehu-
manization.
The crime thus calls for swift justice, which can only
be achieved through a credible and independent pro-
cess, which in turn can only be achieved without the
hand of this government – a government justly mis-
trusted generally and openly friendly precisely to the
very members of the clan accused in the massacre.
We, ourselves, colleagues of the more than a score
of journalists who were killed, demand the following:
One, the creation of a commission outside the gov-
ernment to investigate the crime;
Two, the arrest and prosecution of all the people in-
volved in it in any way, as murderers themselves or their
protectors;
Three, the formation of a special court to try the case;
Four, fully guaranteed protection for the witnesses;
Five, the disarming and dismantling of all private
armies, such as those evidently employed in the mas-
sacre.
Six, the enlistment of persons of unquestioned pro-
bity in the whole process;
And finally, the resignation of the government if it fails
to deliver such basic satisfaction – indeed, the very same
government that has encouraged, by partisanship and
conspiracy, the culture of impunity of which the massa-
cre has been the most abominable manifestation.

to the public. Dialogue and discussion between the two
camps were discouraged. That’s when I started to look
deeper into the issue and to probe into who the people,
pro and con, involved are.
I just wanted to have glimpses of whether they are
competent scientists who also are believers, or just scien-
tists but not men of faith and vulnerable to play politics
or to ideological biases.
Sorry, I have to use these criteria in this increasingly
maddening world driven by all sorts of man-made inven-
tions but putting God aside.That’s my basic guiding prin-
ciple. Science has to go with faith. Any attempt to sepa-
rate the two is immediately suspicious to me.
This issue cannot be resolved by science alone, espe-
cially if it’s a science already prostituted by politics and
ideologies. Faith has to come in. Our human condition
demands it.
And I found out that while all sorts of people can be
found in both camps, the supporters tend to be non-be-
lievers and just contented with being “pure” scientists,
while the doubters and deniers are at least open to the
faith.
Of course, there are many who are neither strong sup-
porters nor strong deniers, but are just swept away by
the bandwagon effect of the controversy. They like mouth-
ing hand-me-down clichés just to be with the flow.
Among these are clerics and other religious people
whose pronouncements peppered with global warming
terms sound really funny and ridiculous. I just pray for
them and hope their embarrassment will not be too bit-
ing.
Of course, many public officials like to play Pied Piper
mostly for the fund of it. I often wonder whether they
really know what they are talking about.
This is now the modern, very sophisticated barbari-
anism that seems to be committed flagrantly and with
impunity against the whole of humanity, and not just
Maguindanao.
Let’s pray, learn our precious lessons and move on!

nalists (CAJ), the largest association of journal-
ists and media practitioners in Southeast Asia,
allow me to express our sincere sympathy over
the violence that erupted on November 23, in
Maguindanao province, Mindanao which resulted
in the death of at least 57 people.
As good neighbours in the Asean community,
please do not misconstrue this letter as a form of
interference with the judicial matters of your
country nor in the ongoing official investigation
being undertaken by Philippine authorities in
relation to this tragic event.

As practicing journalists, however, we cannot
stand aside and not express our indignation over

totally defenseless at the time, were senselessly
killed while performing their duties.
From the reports we have received thus far
from the National Press Club of the Philippines
(NPC), whose president, Mr. Benny Antiporda,
who was elected CAJ Vice President during the
CAJ assembly in Kuala Lumpur last month, more
than 34 practicing Filipino journalists were among
those massacred together with other innocent ci-
vilians. Horrifically, some of the women victims
were reportedly violated before they were killed.
Like the rest of the international community,
we condemn this appalling and truly shocking de-

where, now feel over this mass killing, in a single
day, of our fellow media practitioners.
It has not only blacken the reputation of an
Asean neighbour that we hold in high regards but
also send a chilling reminder to the world that
press freedom and the profession of journalism
continues to be under threat even in a democratic
country like yours.
Incidentally, the issue of media killings in the
Philippines, which was brought to our attention
by our colleagues at the NPC in our last assem-
bly, is among the major concerns that the CAJ
has adopted to be resolved during our term of of-
fice that would end in 2011.
This despicable development gives us in the
CAJ further resolve to assist our Philippine com-
rades in their fight for a safer and humane envi-
ronment to practice their profession and to at-
tain justice to those in their ranks who have fallen
victims to violence.
We therefore appeal to you, Madam President,
to spare no effort in giving justice to the victims
and to use the full force of the Philippine judicial
system and your national security forces in en-
suring that the suspects are immediately appre-
hended whoever they may be.
We shall be one with our Filipino colleagues,
through the NPC, in monitoring the development
in this case.
