This document provides instructions for a scale model project in which students must choose an object from another culture and create an enlarged or reduced scale model of it. Students must obtain measurements of the original object and use a scale factor of at least 4 to create their model. They must submit a blueprint showing their calculations and present their completed model along with a 1-page paper discussing the object and their mathematical process. Students will be graded based on rubrics evaluating their blueprint, model, and paper.

IB Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding IB Criterion C: Communication
Piedmont is an IB WORLD SCHOOL, and as students of it, you need to explore various cultures. For this math project, you will be choosing an object from any culture and making a scale model of it. You need to choose something that has had an impact its society in some way. It can be anything from a traffic light to a musical instrument! Think outside the box and be creative. You will need to display the original item the day you present, so make it something you already have, or can get for that day. For large (or unobtainable items), such as a building in India, you need to have a clear picture(s) to display, not the actual original item! Key Points Choose an object that relates to CULTURE in some way, and then decide if you will make it an enlargement or a reduction. (Your scale factor needs to be at least 4 for an enlargement, but not more than 10 unless you have my approval. Bigger is not always better.) The objects actual measurements need to be able to be obtained through direct measurement or through indirect measurement (and/ or research). It can be built out of any material: wood, metal, plastic, cardboard, fabric, paper, or others? You may work by yourself--or with a partner in class if you have parental consent. Grades will be based on the rubrics on the reverse side. Please submit this sheet w/ your final product. The original object may not be something you make, and then create your model from it later. (For example, you will not be allowed to make a paper airplane, and then use that to create an enlargement of a bigger paper airplane.) You will submit your blueprint with your original and new calculations marked, demonstrating use of the scale factor you chose. (If working in pairs, only submit one for the both of you. The same grade is earned.) A brief, typed to 1-page paper must accompany your model that includes the things noted on the grade sheet. (If working in pairs, only need to submit one for the both of you. The same grade is earned.) Checkpoint: Monday, November 5, 2012 [Blueprints w/ all calculations, research of object] Due date: Friday, November 16, 2012 [Final model and paper due to present]
Scale Model Project Grade Sheet
Part 1: Blueprint ______/ 25
______ / 2 Blueprint is hand-drawn (or is a picture of) the original object and is of all necessary parts ______ / 2 Blueprint and work showing calculations is neat, organized, and clear ______ / 3 Blueprint has all necessary ORIGINAL measurements clearly labeled ______ / 3 Blueprint has all necessary NEW measurements clearly labeled ______ / 15 Blueprint has all calculations showing the use of scale factor from the original to the new
Part 2: Model Paper ______/ 35
______ / 3 Paper is typed, Times New Roman size 12 or 14 font, with 1 margins, 1 page in length ______ / 10 Paper 1: About the model and the mathematical process Intro sentence, description of object, scale factor chosen and why, how you used the scale factor processand any other math during the project, materials used to construct, realizations and difficulties during process, best and hardest parts of project with explanation ______ / 10 Paper 2: History of your object When was it created? Who created it? Why was it created? Where did it originate? Who uses it? How is it used? What impact has it had on the culture or the society for which it was created (Has it helped, hurt, motivated, the people?) Any other history or background info you can find that would help to demonstrate the impact your object has had in the real world. ______ / 10 Paper 3: Unit 1-What if it changed? Unit 2-What is the same and/or what is different? The two IB unit questions from 1 st quarter are listed above. Choose one of the unit questions and answer it for your object specifically. Be clear, concise and convincing! ______ / 2 Paper has all sources (Works Cited) that were used to gather information
Part 3: Scale Model ______/ 40
______ / 2 Model met size requirements (SF= 4-10 times larger, or other approved size) ______ / 3 Model is neatly finished ______ / 5 Model is colored like the original ______ / 5 Model is well-crafted and demonstrates attention to detail ______ / 15 Model is similar and proportional to the original
______/ 10 All 3 parts of project were turned in on time and ready to present!
Final Score ______/ 100 Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding Level of Achievement Descriptor 8 SCALE FACTOR GENIUS! ALL parts of the math project were above and beyond the guidelines. The blueprint and all the calculations on it were neat, correct and all work was shown. Your model was near perfection! 7
6 SCALE FACTOR SMARTY! You completed your scale model with all requirements met! You did a great job on this project because you paid attention to almost every mathematical detail you could and your excellent blueprint and model show it! 5
4 SCALE FACTOR WHIZ Your efforts on this project show that you know a lot about scale factor. You were able to submit blueprints that demonstrate understanding of the basics and your model is well done. You have a few mistakes, but overall, a job well done. 3
2 SCALE FACTOR GENIUS OF THE FUTURE You put forth your greatest effort and are getting better at scale factor. Your blueprint and your model may have some mistakes, but the basic understanding is there. Keep working on it and you will get it! 1
SCALE FACTOR PRACTIONER Overall, you tried your best. Scale factor was not your friend this time, but keep trying! Practice makes perfect! 0 SCALE FACTOR SUSPECT You did not submit a project that shows any understanding of what scale factor is. You should redo your project after seeing me for some help. Total

Criterion C: Communication Level of Achievement Descriptor 6 COMMUNICATION MASTER! Wow! You did an outstanding job of showing all of your math work in a way that would be comprehended by anyone who was reading your work. Not to mention, your paper described your process, the history and the unit questions brilliantly. 5
CLEAR COMMUNICATOR! It is clear that you definitely know what you are doing when it comes to scale factor. Your math work shows that you know when and how to use it. Also, you did an excellent job in your paper conveying the entire math involved. 4
3 SATISFACTORY COMMUNICATOR Your math work and your paper showed that you have a pretty good understanding of how to express scale factor to others. However, you could use a little bit of work on including more details to refine your thoughts. 2
1 COMMUNICATOR IN PROGRESS You gave it your best shot, but still missed the mark on how to clearly communicate what scale factor is and how it is used in relation to this project. See me for any clarification you may still need. 0 I CANT HEAR YOU What happened? Did you forget to show all your work? Did you forget to explain the math and how it was used in your project? Please work on conveying your thoughts to others in a more clear and concise way. Total
