FROM THE PASTOR
Dear friends,

I encourage you to pray for the re-
pose of the soul of our beloved
Bishop Cirilo Flores. The diocese
this week announced the funeral
arrangements, which can be found
on the next page of this bulletin.

Bishop Cirilo was quick to enter into our hearts
with warmth and a friendly demeanor. For the
short time he served he seemed to be everywhere. I
would keep hearing about how people were seeing
him at this event and that event. In the few homi-
lies I heard him preach he seemed to me to express
how important it was to be a light to others and
not to be afraid to be Catholic in public. He would
often tell a story about being at dinner with some
young adults and how they didnt want to make the
sign of the cross in a public restaurant, but that he
encouraged them to do so.

In order to honor Bishop properly, the parish office
will close on Wednesday, September 17th.

Here is a short bio and one of his last messages he
left us with. May he rest in peace.

Raised in Corona, about 10 miles west of Riverside,
Flores was the third of six children. His mother,
Armida, was a high-school dropout; his father,
Cirilo, an immigrant from the coastal Mexican
state of Sinaloa. Devout but poor, his parents could
not afford to send their son to Riversides Notre
Dame High School. Notified of the boys plight, the
local Knights of Columbus a Catholic social
group paid his tuition.

A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, he
spent a year in a seminary before leaving to become
a teacher. Despite a devotion to education, his
classroom career was brief. After completing Stan-
ford Law School, Flores devoted 10 years to a legal
practice.

While attending a friends funeral, the attorney
was asked by three people why he hadnt embraced
holy orders. Flores again reconsidered his path
and, in 1986, entered St. Johns Seminary in Cama-
rillo.

Continued from first column:

In 1991, he was ordained a priest in the Diocese of
Orange. He served in that diocese as a parish priest
for 18 years. In 2009, he became that dioceses aux-
iliary bishop.
In January 2012, he was appointed coadjutor bish-
op of San Diego, becoming the apparent successor
to Bishop Robert Brom. On the day that Brom re-
tired, Sept. 18, 2013, Flores assumed the office of
bishop.

Bishop Flores last message left to us on August 6th
was the following:

Were called, like Christ, to be lamps shining on
all the dark places of human experience, to bring to
bear his Light.

Yours in Christ,

S
anta Sophia Academy wishes to
thank the many parishioners and
parish groups for joining us at the
Parish/Academy Summer Night event
on August 23. It was a grand success and
we appreciate the great enthusiasm of
the evening. In particular we would like to thank
the Boys Scouts, the Parish Event Committee, SSA
PTG, and the parish maintenance crew who helped
with the set-up and clean-up. The Adopt-a-Student
program was able to raise $1,500 towards tuition
assistance for families otherwise unable to afford
Catholic Education and the individual parish
groups appreciated the support they encountered
as well.

We look forward to the New School Year!

MEET THE STAFF
MEET THE STAFF
As mentioned in the letter from the Pastor, we have
had a change of some personnel. In lieu of my Ask
the Pastor column, I would like to continue to intro-
duce the new staff members to the parish. Ask the
Pastor will return. The next staff member I would
like to introduce is:

Maria Belflower
Administrative Assistant
I would like to take this opportunity
to say how blessed and humbled I
am to be able to work at Santa So-
phia Parish. Below I would like to
share a little bit about myself with
all of you.

I am a wife and mother of two beautiful children,
Stephanie who is 22, and Joshua who is 11. I have
been married to my husband John for the past 14
years and live in the beautiful community of Tier-
rasanta and attend Ascension Catholic Parish. I am
involved with several ministries at my parish; Minis-
try of Charity, Bereavement Committee, First Friday
Adoration and the Pro-Life committee. I believe it is
important to give back by making a positive impact
in the lives of others, and that our lives, experiences
and our faith journey are meant to be shared with
others to help build up the kingdom of heaven here
on earth.

I love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, camping, gar-
dening, boogie boarding and photography. I am cur-
rently attending college and working towards my
Associates degree in Business Administration.

To those I have already met, a heartfelt thank you for
welcoming me into your lovely parish community. I
look forward to serving you and continuing on in our
faith journey together.
