Marketing Internship

Departments: All

Desired Start Date: September, 2014

Time Frame: Fall/Winter 2014

Brief Description of Internship: This internship focuses on marketing at WorldDenver; mainly promoting
events and programs of the Denver World Affairs Council and the International Visitor Leadership Program
(see http://exchanges.state.gov/ivlp for more information). The internship provides interns with a valuable
opportunity to learn about external communications at a small nonprofit. Interns will develop the necessary
skills to engage in a professional, multicultural environment.

Description of Organization: WorldDenver was founded in 2012 to educate our community on global issues
and to engage Coloradans as citizen diplomats. WorldDenver serves as the official State Department host for
international delegations visiting Denver under the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and similar
federally-supported public diplomacy initiatives. Through these programs, nearly 450 international visitors are
hosted by WorldDenver annually. WorldDenver also houses the Denver World Affairs Council (DWAC),
serving greater Denver as the officially recognized member of the World Affairs Councils of America, a citizen
education initiative that has more than 80 members nationwide. Approximately 40-150 people attend each
Denver DWAC event, of which there are 15-20 each year. Previously, these programs were operated by the
Institute of International Educations Rocky Mountain Center (IIE) and the strong foundation that IIE formed
has carried over to WorldDenver.

The mission of WorldDenver is to build a diverse network of Coloradans who engage with the world through
our programs. This engagement takes the form of interchange with speakers and doers who are at the forefront
of global events as well as direct interaction with international visitors, students, and educators who themselves
come to Colorado to learn and teach. For more information, please visit www.WorldDenver.org.

Internship Objective: The intern will obtain first-hand knowledge of U.S. Government public diplomacy
initiatives and objectives, as well a citizen global education initiative. The purpose of this internship is for an
intern to learn about and develop communications for these citizen diplomacy and education programs.

Skills and Training Provided: Interns will be provided with the opportunity to develop and expand
communication skills, including professional correspondence, social media and traditional media outreach, and
will learn how to analyze complex data. Training opportunities include internal trainings (such as in-office staff
training events), Lunch n Learns, Denver World Affairs Council speaker events, etc. Intern will also be trained
in WildApricot CMS & CRM systems.

Activities: Under the direction and supervision of WorldDenver staff, interns will primarily focus on updating
the WorldDenver website and social media outreach. This will involve creating and updating event pages,
program content pages, managing the home pages Feature blocks, and managing the blog on the website.
While the intern will not be responsible for writing every blog post, the intern will be responsible for organizing
each weeks blog schedule and overseeing that each blog is posted, through follow up with other staff and
interns. In addition to the website, the intern will manage the social media campaign. This involves the
Facebook page, You Tube, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Through the YouTube page, the intern will need to create
campaigns to promote the WorldDenver Talk videos to members and the community. To encompass the entire
social media program, the intern will need to implement the recently developed social media calendar and
guidelines. Interns will acquire an in depth understanding of complex systems and an appreciation of business
practices, which will help to prepare him/her for success in a future career. Lastly, the intern will be asked to
attend as many events as possible for the purpose of live-posting social media and assisting with photography
when needed.

All interns are required to possess proficient knowledge of basic computer systems as well as be skilled in
written communications. Experience in graphic design, blogging, and website updating is preferred. The intern
will be interacting directly with WorldDenver staff as well as professional resources and international visitors,
so it is necessary that the intern possess a professional and mature attitude. Interest in international relations and
cultural sensitivity are also desired.
This internship is for 15-20 hours per week. WorldDenver offers interns a complimentary annual membership
