The document provides a lesson plan to teach elementary school students (grades 2-4) about first aid. The lesson plan aims to teach students what a first aid kit contains, when different first aid items should be used, and what to do in an emergency situation if it is beyond their capabilities, such as finding a trusted adult or calling 911. The lesson involves showing students the contents of a sample first aid kit and having them practice identifying real first aid items versus non-first aid items in simulated first aid kits. The goal is for students to learn to use basic first aid safely and know when to seek help for larger emergencies.

PROCEDURES
1. Ask students what they think an emergency is. Receive responses from the students, and then tell them what an emergency is: A sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence or occasion requiring immediate action. 2. Tell the students that there are many kinds of emergencies and that if any of the students feel like they are in danger or have an emergency to find a trusted adult or to call 911. Emphasize that a trusted adult means a parent, teacher, guardian, etc. 3. Tell the students that today they will be learning about the first aid kit and its uses. 4. Have students gather around in a circle and sit in a chair so that you have their attention. Take out your already prepared first aid kit. 5. Take out each item and say its name and what the item is used for. (Possibly pass around the item so that the students can take a better look). 6. Give some examples of an emergency. Examples such as:
1 Adapted from http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Health/Safety/SFY0016.html Health & Wellness Safety: First Aid Lesson Plan 2
a. Falling off of a bicycle and scraping ones knees. b. Twisting an ankle. c. Getting a black eye. 7. Tell what you would use for each scenario. a. Put on non-latex gloves. Use gauze to wipe blood from the scrape. Use sterile wipe to clean the cut. Put Neosporin on the scrape and then put a Band-Aid on it. b. Take the ace bandage and wrap around the twisted ankle. c. Use the instant cold pack and put on black eye. 8. Split the students into groups of 5-6. Have them sit around a table and give each group a box of all the materials. Instruct the students to pick out which items belong in a first aid kit and tell them to put those items in the first aid bag/box. 9. Once they are finished, have each group present to the instructor what is in their first aid bag. Help them if they have chosen incorrect items. 10. Collect the boxes of materials.
EVALUATION Tell the students to explain what they did in class today to their parents and ask if they can help prepare a first aid kit for their own home.
