1B SOCIETY AND DEATH IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Like that of Mesopotamia, the study of ancienr Egypt carries the advantage of rarge
sets of archaeological data as well as indigenous, contemporary
textual data.
yet,
with rel-
atively few exceptio's (e.g., o'connor l.97za, L990a1 Baines 19gg; Kemp 19g9; Meskell
1999a,b,2002; wilfon g2002), the potentially
rich results from more integrated exploration
of these data have remained untapped. Studies of the social organization of ancient Egypt-
where they exist
-
tend even now to be based on either textual or archaeological data, leading
Tiigger to comment that "ideas about the generai nature of Egyptian society and culture
remain largely implicit and unexplored" (Tiigger 1979:29).Issues
such as rhe,,rise of a mid-
dle class" have continued to occur as unsubstantiated comments within essays focusing on
political historv; it has been only since the early 1970s that the issue of Egyptian socioeco-
nomic organizatton has been resurrected as a topic in its own right, with attention paid
to
multiple lines of evidence.
Chapter Two begins a contemplation of society in the Middle Kingdom by considering
the range of pictorial and textual data available for the period and of how scholars have
used these data sets to comment on social organization. \X/ith Chapter Three the inquiry
moves beyond text and image to archaeolog as a prelude to considering the importace of
data from mortuary landscapes in evaiuating social reality and sociai process.
