global crises and a retreating U.S. superpower, senior
[German] officials are urging a rethinking of the countrys

Its impossible to know if Germanys mind change trans-
pired at a particular meeting or on a specic day. However,
it appears a meeting on January :,between Chancel-
lor Merkel, Steinmeier and von der Leyencould have
been signicant. As Spiegel reported, Merkel met with her

whether Germany ought to provide more assistance, and
Germanys broader foreign policy. (Germany did decide to
ramp up its involvement in Africa).
Since then, the message emanating from Germany,

nated by discussion about security,
President Mahmoud Abbas of the
Palestinian Authority has proposed
to Secretary of State John Kerry that
an American-led .1o force patrol a
future Palestinian state indenitely,
with troops positioned throughout the
territory, at all crossings, and within
Jerusalem.
Mr. Abbas said in an interview with
the New York Times at his headquar-
ters here over the weekend that Israeli
soldiers could remain in the West
Bank for up to ve yearsnot three,
as he previously statedand that
Jewish settlements should be phased
out of the new Palestinian state along
a similar timetable. Palestine, he said,
would not have its own army, only
a police force, so the .1o mission
would be responsible for preventing
the weapons smuggling and terrorism
that Israel fears.
For a long time, and wherever they
want, not only on the eastern borders,
but also on the western borders,
everywhere, Mr. Abbas said of the
imagined .1o mission. Te third
party can stay. Tey can stay to reas-
sure the Israelis, and to protect us.
Mr. Abbass proposal comes at a
sensitive stage of the American-bro-
kered negotiations. Mr. Kerry is pre-
paring to present a framework of core
principles for a peace deal, including a
security plan, a border roughly along
the :o, lines, Palestinian recognition
of Israel as a Jewish state and Jerusa-

On recognition of Israel as a Jewish
state, Mr. Abbas said, Tis is out of

I
v.i. Foviic Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif claimed
on January :: that Washington has falsely portrayed infor-
mation from the supposedly historic deal made in Geneva.
Zarif, who was instrumental in negotiating the deal in Ge-
neva, said the White House interpretation of the deal under-
plays the concessions and overplays Iranian commitments. A
White House fact sheet issued afer the deal states that Iran is
committed to rolling back key elements, including halting
the enrichment of uranium beyond , percent, neutralizing
its stockpile of near-:o percent uranium, stopping enrich-
ment capability, and halting progress on the growth of its ,.,
percent stockpile of uranium.
But Zarif brought up a valid point in his interview
with c. None of these commitments involve disman-
tling the infrastructure that makes production possible.
Yet this is exactly what the U.S. has repeatedly said that
Iran is going to do. Zarif continued the interview: Te
White House tries to portray [the deal] as basically a
dismantling of Irans nuclear program. Tat is the word
they use time and time again. Zarif went on to say that
we are not dismantling any centrifuges, were not dis-
mantling any equipment, were simply not producing, not
enriching over , percent.
Zarif is completely correct in saying that the perspective
Washington is trying to portray is false. Consider the state-
ments that the U.S. has been using. Roll back is a curious
term. What is being rolled back: Is Iran being forced to
take any real steps backward: Halting enrichment isnt a
backward step; its just standing in place. Te Geneva deal
will not force it to stop, despite how the U.S. might por-
tray it. White House ocials are continually using terms
such as roll back and dismantle in an eort to sell the
Geneva deal both domestically and internationally. But as
Iran is showing, it is a sham.
Te deal doesnt entail Iran making any lasting changes.
Tis is no historic breakthrough.

Karzais Secret
Contacts With Taliban
NEW YORK TIMES | February 3
P
visiui1 H.miu Karzai of
Afghanistan has been engaged in
secret contacts with the Taliban about
reaching a peace agreement without
the involvement of his American and
Western allies, further corroding
already strained relations with the
United States.
Te secret contacts appear to help
explain a string of actions by Mr. Kar-
zai that seem intended to antagonize
his American backers, Western and
Afghan ocials said. In recent weeks,
Mr. Karzai has continued to refuse to
sign a long-term security agreement
with Washington that he negotiated,
insisted on releasing hardened Taliban
militants from prison, and distributed
distorted evidence of what he called
American war crimes.
Te clandestine contacts with the
Taliban have borne little fruit, accord-
ing to people who have been told about
them. But they have helped undermine
the remaining condence between the
United States and Mr. Karzai, mak-
ing the already messy endgame of the
Afghan conict even more volatile.
Support for the war eort in Congress
has deteriorated sharply, and Ameri-
can ocials say they are uncertain
whether they can maintain even
minimal security cooperation with Mr.
Karzais government or its successor
afer coming elections.
Both Mr. Karzai and American o-
cials hear the clock ticking. American
forces are turning over their combat
role to Afghan forces and preparing to
leave Afghanistan this year, and the
campaigning for the Afghan national
election in April has begun.
Mr. Karzai has insisted that he will
not sign [an agreement with Washing-
ton] unless the Americans help bring
the Taliban to the table for peace talks.
Some diplomats worry that making
such a demand allows the Taliban to
dictate the terms of Americas long-
term presence in Afghanistan. Others
question Mr. Karzais logic: Why would
the insurgency agree to talks if doing
so would ensure the presence of the
foreign troops it is determined to expel:
Te White House expressed impa-
tience on Monday with Mr. Karzais re-
fusal to sign the agreement. Te longer
there is a delay, the harder it is for .1o
and U.S. military forces to plan for a
post-:o: presence, said Jay Carney,
the White House press secretary. Tis
is a matter of weeks, not months.

n Dont forget, the Sinai is still
festering
Afer the Arab Spring swept across
Egypt, radical Islamists have been
allowed to dramatically expand
their presence in the Sinai Desert.
Although Syrias jihadists have been
dominating the headlines, its im-
portant to remember this essentially
ungoverned area next to one of the
worlds most important sea gates.
Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (.nm), a group
praised by al Qaeda, has grown into
one of the worlds most active terror-
ist groups over the last three years. Its
name means Supporters of Jerusa-
lem. Te group may also be linked
to some of the individuals behind the
attack on Americas ambassador in
Benghazi. Stratfor recently reported,
Te group also appears to be get-
ting weaponry from Libya, including
surface-to-air missiles (January ,o).
If .nms claim of shooting down a
helicopter on January :, is accurate,
T
ui cvowic and sophisticated insurgency in the Sinai
Peninsula, along with its declared emphasis on attack-
ing the Egyptian regimes economic lifeblood, has raised
fears over the security of the Suez Canal, one of the worlds
principal arteries for trade, and especially for moving oil
and gas between Asia and Europe.
Late last summer, afer militants lmed themselves
launching a rocket attack on a cargo ship that was mak-
ing its way through the canal, worries over the channels
vulnerability to a terrorist attack began to proliferate.
If theyre really serious about targeting the economic
interests of the Egyptian government, the Suez Canal
would be near the top, if not at the top of the list, David
Barnett, a research associate at the Foundation for Defense
of Democracies who specializes in Sinai insurgent groups,
told Foreign Policy.
Almost :,o years afer it was dug out of the Egyptian
desert, the Suez Canal matters more than ever to both
Egyptian state coers and the global economy. Egyp-
tian revenues from the canal total about s, billion a year,
dwarng the annual aid provided by the United States and
amounting to about : percent of Egypts cuv. Tats one
reason that Egyptian authorities, under Hosni Mubaraks
government, then under President Mohamed Morsi, and
today again under military tutelage, have spared no ex-
pense to secure the canal against threats in the Sinai.
But the canals importance to global trade is also huge.
In :o::, the last full year for which trac statistics are
available, nearly , million barrels of oil per day passed
through the canalor roughly , percent of all the crude oil
traded by ship, according to the U.S. Energy Information
Administration.
Te economic implications of an attack would likely be
severeand not just for Egypt. Rerouting ships around
Africa would add thousands of miles to the voyage, increas-
ing costs and also requiring ships to transit more pirate-
infested waters.

it is the rst time a surface-to-air-

o other ailing European nation
are self-image and public perception
further apart than in Greece. [Greek
Finance Minister Giannis] Stournaras
and his prime minister, Antonis
Samaras, see their country as being
on a par with the successful models
of Ireland and Spain when it comes to
reforms. Europes nance ministers,
on the other hand, paint a very dier-
ent picture: While Spain and Ireland
no longer depend on the assistance
of European bailouts, it is exactly the
opposite for the Greeks.
Greece thinks its success so
fareven though it lags far behind

Te nance ministers are reluctant to
provide it. Tey found the progress
pleasing, but they all agreed with the
judgment made by their chairman.
Its taking too long, said Dutch Fi-
nance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem.
While the countrys austerity mea-
sures are worthy of praise, the Euro
Group told Stournaras, it wanted to
wait for ocial data from Eurostat. Tis
will be available in late April, and until
then Athens has some homework to do.
Representatives of the troika, com-
prised of the European Commission,
European Central Bank and Interna-
tional Monetary Fund, were particu-

Stournaras of following through on
less than ,o percent of the promised

European ocials are now search-
ing for a new strategy for handling
their biggest problem case, and it ap-
pears that German Finance Minister
Wolfgang Schuble is pushing for a
swif solution. In a ve-page internal
memorandum to his ministry, titled
Greece Position Paper, the strat-
egy of both supporting and making
demands has been given new content:
Greece can only hope for new aid
from its creditors if the government

thorities are unreliable, the creation of

and privatization isnt moving ahead.
Te job market has also failed to
become as exible as desired. In short,
the reforms undertaken by Greece
arent enough.
Not to mention, Athens has to raise
more than : billion (Uss:., billion)
this year to meet the budget require-
ments of its second bailout pack-
ageand its nowhere close. With the
promised steps still yet to be taken,
the other eurozone countries are
refusing to pay out two tranches of
the bailout package, worth 8., billion
(s::., billion) altogether.
Te Greeks need money at the latest
by May, when payment obligations
of some :o billion (s:,.o billion) are
due. Tats why Schuble and his crew
hope that cash-strapped Athens will
hurry to catch up. Its also why hes
building a threat scenario along with
his European counterpartsthat the
outstanding money will only be paid
with further Greek reform.
Whether this carrot and stick ap-
proach will work is questionable, how-
ever. Schuble knows the Greeks are
aware that donor countries can hardly
aord to deny the tranche payments.
If Greece defaulted, the euro crisis
could quickly resurface. Tus the Euro
Group wants to be accommodating
only not just yet.
Berlin also wants to urge Greece to
ask the World Bank and the European
Bank for Reconstruction and Develop-
ment for help. Both of those institu-
tions are well versed in helping to re-
vive economies in dire straits. Cyprus
sought their help and was now benet-
ing from it, German ocials argue.
In fact, Berlin is proud of the
Cyprus rescue. Schuble and his aides
feel vindicated in their crisis manage-
ment for the troubled island nation
last year. Tey see Cyprus as a model
for future bailouts: tough action at the
beginning followed by patience.
We turned the Cypriot business
model on its head, wound down banks
and involved private creditors, says
one Schuble aide. Now, just a few
months later, the policy is bearing
fruit. No one is talking about Cyprus
as a crisis region. Te country, the aide
says, is making progress in all areas.

be :., percent to ,., percent bigger than reported in the of-
cial statistics. (Tis would be in addition to the impact of
the European Unions planned changes in cuv accounting
standards, which will take place this summer.)
Te possibility was raised by Carsten-Patrick Meier at
Kiel Economics Research & Forecasting GmbH & Co. and
initially reported by Henrik Muller in Der Spiegel. Te
article was in German, which may explain why no one in
the English-speaking press seems to have noticed it. I spoke
with Meier earlier today and his case is compelling.
First, consider that Germanys Federal Statistics Oce
revises its annual gross domestic product estimates with a
long lag. Te :o:: cuv estimate was revised higher this past
August. Te :o:, estimate wont be revised until August
:o:,. Tose revisions ofen reect changing estimates of
construction spending and services, which are hard to
calculate in real time. As a result, the initial estimates tend
to track data on foreign trade and manufacturing. Tis bias
doesnt usually create problems, but it would explain how
the Statistics Oce might miss an economic boom driven
by domestic consumption.
Plenty of data support the theory that the German
economy is stronger than meets the eye. Te monthly
Ifo Business Climate Index is near its highest level since
reunication, suggesting growth of about , percent in
:o:,. Te uiux Business Survey shows a similar level of
optimism. Consumer condence data from Icon and
the European Commission correspond to a growth rate
of a little more than : percent. Te GfK data on income
expectations is at an all-time high. Te ziw survey of
German growth expectations suggests cuv growth of
about ,., percent last year and percent for this coming
year.
Te implication is that the German output gap is much
smaller than believed, and proposed government spend-
ing measures might lead to several years of wage growth
of as much as , percent. German ination, which has been
held back by quiescent commodity prices and depression in
much of Europe, will also accelerate as consumers get more
money in their pockets and feel more comfortable spend-
ing it. Tat would be good for ordinary Germans and also
for their European neighbors, who would have an easier
time improving their relative competitiveness without hav-
ing to endure pay cuts.

During the late :os, virtually

featuring a sophisticated phased .v-

With new multi-mission platforms

high-tech anti-ship cruise missiles, or

vicovu-breaking s1ocx market
is distorting a frightening reality:
Te U.S. is being eaten alive by a
horric cancer that will ultimately
destroy the economy and impoverish
the vast majority of its citizens.
Tats according to Peter Schi, the
best-selling author and cio of Euro
Pacic Capital, who delivered his
harsh warning to investors in a recent
interview on Fox Business.
I think we are heading for a worse
economic crisis than we had in :oo,,
Schi said. Youre going to have a col-
lapse in the dollar a huge spike in
interest rates and our whole econo-

A
mivic.s icoomic crisis is only
half over. At least thats the conclu-
sion of Yale economist Stephen Roach.
If what he says is right, it may be time
to brace yourself.
Some people believe the last two
quarters of strengthening gross do-
mestic product mean America is nally
breaking out of its brutally anemic recovery, says Roach at
Project Syndicate.
Tats just wishful thinking.
In Roachs view, American consumers balance-sheet
repair is, at best, only about half-nished, and the healing
process still has years to go.
Roach is being an optimist.
With the Federal Reserve now supposedly cutting back its
articial stimulus, debt servicing
costs threaten to eviscerate U.S.
consumers and shove the global
economy back into recession.
Its true that personal debt
levels have fallen. Due to the mas-
sive numbers of mortgage defaults
and bankruptcies since :oo8, the
debt-to-income ratio for Ameri-
can households is now down to a
less gargantuan :o percent, from
the bubble peak of :,, percent in :oo,. It is also true that
people are nally saving more. Te personal savings rate
has increased from a pre-crisis :. percent to . percent.
However, debt and savings levels dont give the whole
picture. Te cost to carry the debt is what is important.
And the cost of supporting all that debt may be set to soar.
In December, the Federal Reserve announced it would
start to wind down its unprecedented stimulus programs.
And Federal Reserve money printing is the biggest factor
keeping interest rates low and debt aordable for con-
sumers.
Te news reverberated through the investment
community. Within days, markets began to tumble and
volatility surge. We are staring into the face of a market
bloodbath unless the Fed halts its tapering, the Royal
Bank of Scotland warned on February .
At street level the ground is buckling too.
Factory orders in the U.S. suered their sharpest fall in
,, years this January. Te ism manufacturing index took its
biggest one-month decline since the Lehman crisis. ics
Rob Carnell called the news absolutely awfuland the
worst since the recession of :8o.
According to the Telegraphs Ambrose Evans-Pritchard,
U.S. money supply growth rate has been slowing for
months. Now that the Fed is reducing stimulus, money
supply growth may be set to disappear altogether. Tis
signals a lull ahead, he warns.
Evans-Pritchard is being an optimist too. In a debt-
based economy that math-
ematically requires ever greater
amounts of money to cover
principal and interest payments,
even a reduced money supply can
turn deadly.
Te crisis is imminent, writes
Euro Pacic Capitals Peter Schi.
I dont think Obama is going to
nish his second term without the
bottom dropping out. And stock
market investors are oblivious to the problems.
Te only way to mitigate the global wreckage will be
for the Fed to reverse course and dramatically increase its
monetary stimulus, he says. By doing so, it might postpone
the crisis and buy some time.
But the Fed is a false god anyway. It cannot heal the
worlds debt-addicted nancial systems. It cannot re-create
the global economy, or even mend the economic fault lines
tearing apart America.

you pull the rug out from under it.
Schi says that, despite phony
signs of an economic recovery, the
cancer destroying America stems
from a lethal concoction of our
s:otrillion federal debt and the Feds
never-ending money printing.
Currently, Yellen and the Fed are
buying nearly s: trillion of Treasury

about s,, billion per month against a
budget decit that is about the same
level.
According to Schi, these numbers
are unsustainable. And the Fed has no

Eventually interest rates will rise

will tank and bonds dip to nothing.
Massive new tax hikes will be imposed

Y
oU m.v have heard something about this story . So,
heres what we know so far:
In :o::, the Bundesbank (the central bank of Ger-
many) asked to visit the vault of the Federal Reserve
in New York, to view the :,,,o tons of gold they have
stored there.
Te Federal Reserve told them no. Tey were not al-
lowed to see their gold.
In response, Germany said that they wanted ,oo tons
of their gold back.
Te Federal Reserve said that theyd need seven years
to get the gold back to Germany. (Something that
should take them seven weeks, tops.)
One year later, the Fed has returned only , tons of
gold to Germany. At this rate, it will take oo years for
the Germans to get less than one fh of their gold
back.
Tough I dont know precisely what, it is very clear that
something strange is going on here.
Shipping ,oo tons of metal is hardly a new and dicult
technical challenge. Companies involved in metal trading
do this all the time. Sure, gold requires extra security, but
security is also something that lots of people know how to
provide.
Te president of Germanys top nancial regulations
group said that manipulation of gold and silver is worse
than the Libor-rigging scandal. (Te Libor scandal was
and is a big deal, and lots of lawsuits are underway over it.)
Tats a big accusation.
Ten, Deutsche Bank, the biggest German bank,
dropped out of the London gold xing pool; the group of
bankers that set the ocial price of gold. Tis is also related
to the investigations by European regulators into the
suspected manipulation of precious metals prices by banks.
Again, this is a very signicant event.
Germany does not seem happy about what the Fed is
doing to them.
In addition to this, the Financial Times ran an article
advising investors to demand physical delivery of their
gold. Bloomberg published an article on gold price ma-
nipulation.
So, given what we know, the obvious question becomes,
Whats really going on:
Te rst answer is that we simply do not know . Most
likely, however, is that all of Germanys gold has been lent
out and/or used as loan collateral multiple times and that
the Fed is having a very hard time unwinding all those
loans. If they just give the gold back, the collateral for hun-
dreds (maybe thousands) of international loans goes away.
And when I say lent out multiple times, I am not speak-
ing loosely. Tere is a nancial trick called rehypothecation
that allows bankers to use the same stack of gold as the col-
lateral for simultaneous loans over and over and over.
So, in order to pull Germanys gold out of the lending
game (and central banks do loan out gold), lots and lots
of loans would have to be rehypothecated to other piles
of gold, and that requires a lot of oce work. Each bar of
Germanys gold could be involved in a dozen loans, each of
which must be rearranged.
Tis would account for the slowness of the Fed return-
ing the gold back to where it belongs.
Of course, there are other possibilities. Maybe the Fed
is just trying to punish Germany for some reason or
that the gold is simply no longer therethat the Fed or its
friends sold it.
Te one thing we can be sure of is that the Federal
Reserve and the Bundesbank are at odds. What will come
from that is unknown, but this is a very signicant problem
between giants, and it is already producing consequences.

uo1 think [marijuana] is more dangerous than
alcohol, President Barack Obama said in a January :,
interview with the New Yorker.
Te statement sparked delight across the nation among
fraternity members, fans of Lil Wayne and many regular
Americans too. But is it true:
Abundant data shows that when alcohol is abused it
becomes poisonous and can lead to numerous medical
problems, including fatal overdoses. But smoking mari-
juana doesnt cause fatal overdoses.
Tat dierence is the leitmotif of marijuana propaganda.
Its proof, pot advocates say, that smoking cannabis is less
dangerous than drinking alcohol. But the argument oper-
ates from a ridiculously slender denition of dangerous.
A :oo: study proves that marijuanas adverse impact on
the brain can last weeks afer the high wears o, so people
who smoke it daily, or even weekly, are functioning at a sub-
optimal intellectual level at all times. Studies also show that
it reduces users motivation, ofen leads to addiction, and can
cause respiratory disease, mental illness and increased rates
of depression, suicidal thinking and anxiety. It can also lead
users to engage in all kinds of behaviors that cause death.
Te federal Controlled Substances Act classies mari-
juana as a Schedule : substance, meaning its one of the
most dangerous drugs with potentially severe psycho-
logical or physical dependence. It also means the gov-
ernment is obligated to enforce laws banning marijuana
equally across the nation.
Te Holy Bible doesnt mention marijuana, but many
smokers say their habit is sanctioned by something God
told Adam: I have given you every herb bearing seed
and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding
seed; to you it shall be for meat (Genesis :::). But the
word meat means edible vegetation. Tis passage doesnt
give the green light to smoking marijuana any more than it
sanctions ingesting hemlock.
Te Bible does discuss many aspects of drinking. Scrip-
ture cautions sternly against excess drinking, and is ada-
mant that people shouldnt become inebriated by anything.
But Scripture also reveals thatwhen used in modera-
tionalcohol is a gif from God! Passages like Psalm :o::,,
: Timothy ,::, and Deuteronomy :::o make that clear.
Many have turned the blessing of alcohol into a curse,
and many lives have been damaged or ended by alcohol
abuse. But alcohol can be enjoyed moderately and correctly.
Marijuana, however, cannot be smoked in any way that is
correct and healthy.
Science, U.S. law and the ultimate authority of the Holy
Bible agree that marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol.
Te presidents decision to wade into this controversial
topic and ippantly undermine U.S. law is hastening the
nations slide into lawlessness and destabilization.
Te most alarming part is that the destabilization he is
accelerating may not be as accidental or cavalier as it may,

oUiu 1oo much sugar be deadly: Te biggest study of
its kind suggests the answer is yes, at least when it comes
to fatal heart problems.
It doesnt take all that much extra sugar, hidden in
many processed foods, to substantially raise the risk, the
researchers found, and most Americans eat more than the
safest amount.
Having a cinnamon roll with your morning coee, a
super-sized sugary soda at lunch and a scoop of ice cream
afer dinner would put you in the highest risk category in
the study. Tat means your chance of dying prematurely
from heart problems is nearly three times greater than for
people who eat only foods with little added sugar.
For someone who normally eats :,ooo calories daily,
even consuming two ::-ounce cans of soda substantially
increases the risk. For most American adults, sodas and
other sugary drinks are the main source of added sugar.
Lead author Quanhe Yang of the U.S. Centers of Disease
Control and Prevention called the results sobering and said
its the rst nationally representative study to examine the
issue.
Scientists arent certain exactly how sugar may con-
tribute to deadly heart problems, but it has been shown to
increase blood pressure and levels of unhealthy cholesterol
and triglycerides; and also may increase signs of inamma-
tion linked with heart disease, said Rachel Johnson, head of
the American Heart Associations nutrition committee and
a University of Vermont nutrition professor.
Yang and colleagues analyzed national health surveys
between :88 and :o:o that included questions about
peoples diets. Te authors used national death data to cal-
culate risks of dying during :, years of follow-up.
Overall, more than ,o,ooo American adults, aged on
average were involved.
Previous studies have linked diets high in sugar with
increased risks for non-fatal heart problems, and with
obesity, which can also lead to heart trouble. But in the
new study, obesity didnt explain the link between sugary
diets and death. Tat link was found even in normal-weight
people who ate lots of added sugar.
As sugar intake increased, risks climbed steeply.
Adults who got at least :, percent of their calories from
added sugar were almost three times more likely to die of
heart problems than those who consumed the leastless
than :o percent.
For those who got more than :, percentor the equiva-
lent of about two cans of sugary soda out of :,ooo calories
dailythe risk was almost :o percent higher than the saf-
est level.
Sugar calories quickly add up: One teaspoon has about
:o calories; one ::-ounce can of non-diet soda contains
about teaspoons of sugar or about :o calories; many cin-
namon rolls have about :, teaspoons of sugar; one scoop of
chocolate ice cream has about , teaspoons of sugar.
Dr. Jonathan Purnell, a professor at Oregon Health &
Science Universitys Knight Cardiovascular Institute, said
while the research doesnt prove sugar can cause you to die
of a heart attack, it adds to a growing body of circumstan-
tial evidence suggesting that limiting sugar intake can lead
to healthier, longer lives.

us; wed be selsh not to help. More
than anything, Gaucks message was a
sincere plea to 8o million Germans to
shed their pacism and get behind the
German government as it unselshly
serves mankind.
We Germans are advancing towards
a form of responsibility that has not yet
become routine for us, he stated. We live in a world in which
economic and political power is shifing and entire regions are
arming themselves. In the Middle East, there is a danger that
individual crises will converge and engulf the whole region. At
this very moment, the worlds only superpower is reconsider-
ing the scale and form of its global engagement. Germany
must respond: I dont believe that Germany can simply carry
on as before in the face of these developments.
According to Gauck, Germanys ascension is inevitable.
Germany has already been traveling along the road towards
becoming a guarantor of the international order and secu-
rity for years now, he said.
Gauck also boldly addressed what is widely seen as the
root cause of Germanys reluctance for greater military
and political assertion, which is the shame and guilt many
Germans still have for World War ii. I have to admit that
while there are genuine pacists in Germany, there are also
people who use Germanys guilt for its past as a shield for
laziness or a desire to disengage from the world.
In others words, Givm.v mUs1 suiu 1ui cUii1 .u

He drove this point home further in his conclusion,
once again addressing the German people specically: I

fundamentally reformed country of ours. Te post-war
generations had reasons to be distrustfulof the German
state and of German society. BU1 1ui 1imi vov sUcu c.1-

fully repented and atoned for the Second World War, and
that its time the German public stopped dwelling on the
past. We must have confidence in our abilities and should
trust in ourselves, he stated.
Defense Minister von der Leyen took the stage afer
President Gauck and basically continued where he lef o.
She stressed the need for greater integration among Eu-
ropean nations in security and military. She also recalled
some of the many global crises, in Syria, Libya and Africa,
before stating: To sit and wait is not an option. If we have
means, if we have capabilitieswe have the obligation and
we have the responsibility to engage.
Steinmeier also spoke, and he too stressed the urgent need
for a more assertive German foreign policy. Germany is
really too big to just comment from the sidelines, he stated.
Steinmeier outlined seven practical propositions for Ger-
many. One stated, Germany must be ready for earlier, more
decisive and more substantive engagement in the foreign and
security policy sphere. Another included the promise that
Germany must provide concrete assistance to global issues,
and not just rhetorical outrage. In another, he stated that
Germany was keen to give input and leadership in negotia-
tions for a common European foreign, security and defense
policy. In another, Steinmeier criticized Germanys culture
of restraint and suggested Berlin needed to show itself more
prepared and willing to act militarily when called upon.

of a more militarily and politically assertive Germany!
Here at the Trumpet none of thisGermanys ascension,
Europes military and political integration, Americas global
retreatis surprising. Herbert W. Armstrong forecast these
exact events for 70 years. When Mr. Armstrong died in
1986, Gerald Flurry continued delivering the exact same
warning message. Indeed, the cover story of our December
2013 Trumpet was titled Were All Falling in Love With
Germany. Tis article exposed the intense global demand
for more German leadership and what the disastrous conse-
quences of this wish would be.
Te article strongly cautioned the world against over-
looking and ignoring Germanys history. We must not
forget that only , yearsjust one lifetimeago, Germany
started the most destructive war in human history.
We must not forget that less than a quarter of a century
before World War ii, Germany instigated World War i, the
most destructive war in human history to that time. We
must not forget the :th-century history of Prussian Prince
Otto Von Bismarck, the man responsible for consolidating
the German states, augmenting Prussian power, and ignit-
ing the ame of modern German nationalism . We must
not forget the history of the Habsburg Dynasty, which was
centered in what today is southern Germany and Austria.
Tis too was an imperialist empire, one that expanded us-
ing a well-crafed strategy of violence, politics and romance
to encompass most of Europe, the Americas and East In-
dies. We must not forget the history of Otto the Great, the
:oth-century German emperor, the forefather of German
nationalism, and the man who under moral and spiritual
cover from the Catholic Church conquered the people of
central, southern and eastern Europe and established the
German Holy Roman Empire.
You see, its not just Bible prophecy screaming at us to be
more alarmed by Germanys rise. His1ovv uois 1oo! Isnt
it time we developed some humility and displayed some
respect for historical fact, for the great gures of the past
who understood Germany and its proclivity for conict,
and, most of all, for Bible prophecy: Unless we do, both
Bible prophecy and history show that the consequences of a
newly resurrected, globally dominant German empire will
be ugly and incredibly painful.
