Uran
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uran is part of Navi Mumbai city and lies in the Raigad
district near Panvel and Karjat. It is situated east of
Mumbai across the Dharamtar Creek, and is primarily a
fishing village, which has developed into a special
economic zone. Uran is famous for its salt pans. A revolt
by salt pan owners against the government decision to
build a sea port occurred, but the sea port has now
proved to be the main source of income to most of the
residents and nearby villages, as major projects &
warehouses have opened nearby. It has many industries,
namely container terminals like JNPT, DP WORLD (ex
P&O), APM terminals (ex GTI) and other shipping
companies, GTPS - MSEB (Asia's first power plant run
by gas) and ONGC.

Issues
9/25/14 Uran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uran 5/5
Uran has a naval base near Mora Gaon Mora. Locals claim that the base has stifled the growth of the town, due to
sea travel restrictions imposed by the Indian Navy.
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has a plant nearby, and has banned entry into an old fort located
just beside the ONGC plant for security reasons. The fort was with the Marathas for a short period before passing
into possession of the Portuguese, as per the locals.
The outskirts of town are largely rural, remaining among the few places within the Navi Mumbai city limits
untouched by the modernity of the central city.
The Uran wetlands were once home to many species of birds and reptiles, some critically endangered. They were
developed in 2009 and 2010.
