Alive Assignment

In the movie Alive, a group of people are placed in a very difficult position when their
airplane crashes in the Andes Mountains. They must survive in a cold and harsh climate for a
number of weeks until rescue comes. It seems Antonio (a rugby team captain) immediately
takes on a leadership role by ordering people to move the wounded out of the plane fuselage.
Antonio was never elected as the ultimate leader, but given the fact that he is a rugby team
captain, he immediately took charge and people just accepted it. There was no time to debate
over leadership because people were hurt inside the plane and needed assistance.
The first law that Antonio creates is rationing food and wine. This way, it will last a much
longer time in case they are not rescued right away. The next day, after thinking they will be
rescued soon, many of the survivors eat the food supply. Antonio responds to this by becoming
furious and lashing out at the group. Consequently, the survivors no longer have a large food
supply to last them an extensive time period.
In response to that, a second rule is created. After a thorough group deliberation, they
decide in that order to survive, they must eat the deceased. Roberto takes point on this task by
being the first to cut out a piece of flesh and eat it. Many of the other survivors then follow suit.
If this rule is not followed by someone, they risk dying from starvation and furthermore, being
eaten by the group. The thought and dread of being eaten by someone is how this rule is
enforced.
A third rule, enacted after another brief group discussion, is to increase the food rations
for group of three people so that they can go find the tail of the plane. Everybody else will have
to take a slightly smaller portion, however. This is a sensible idea because the batteries for the
planes radio are in the tail and they need the batteries to work the radio. The people that
make this trek need to be strong and have enough energy to do it. The punishment of this rule
is the fear of not being able to fix the radio to call for help and thus not being rescued since the
group does not have the energy to find the wreckage. This rule is enforced by the same general
fear of not be saved.
As shown in the film, when you are in a life and death situation with a group of people,
it is important to follow rules. Without rules and regulations, it would be complete anarchy. The
movie teaches us that when you dont follow the rules, the outcome can be bad and even
horrific.
