Arjuna Award

The Arjuna Award was instituted in 1961 as the highest national recognition for outstanding
performance in Sports and Games in the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, orld
Cup, orld Championship disciplines and Cric!et" #owe$er, contro$ersy o$er selection has
dogged the awards e$er since its inception in 1961" As per the re$ised scheme from April %&&%,
the o'jecti$e of Arjuna Awards is to recogni(e outstanding performance of sports persons, at
international le$el only"
The winners will 'e decided 'y a Selection Committee comprising of a Chairperson, who is a
sports person of eminence and 1% other mem'ers distinguished in the field of sports including )
Olympians and * Arjuna Awardees from different disciplines, % Sports Administrators and a
+em'er,Secretary of the Committee who would 'e the -irector.-eputy Secretary /Sports0 from
the +inistry of 1outh Affairs and Sports" The Chairperson of the Committee in consultation with
the +em'er,Secretary may constitute panels from among its mem'ers to assist the Committee in
choosing the winners" 2nder the scheme, the awardee is gi$en a 'ron(e statuette of Arjuna, a
scroll and a cash pri(e of ) la!h rupees along with a monogram, a 'la(er and a tie"
Only international le$el performance of sportspersons will 'e ta!en into account when deciding
the awardees" Sports persons found positi$e for use of drugs 'anned 'y the 3nternational
Olympic Committee in any la'oratory accredited 'y 3nternational Olympic Committee will not
'e eligi'le for the Arjuna Awards" The ma4imum num'er of awards gi$en in a year would 'e 1),
one award in each discipline" #owe$er, in the year succeeding Asian Games and Commonwealth
Games an e4ception could 'e made for a second award 'eing gi$en to a sports person in those
disciplines in which more than ) medals ha$e 'een won in the Asian.Commonwealth Games"
The nominations for the award will 'e in$ited 'y the +inistry of 1outh Affairs and Sports from
all recogni(ed 5ational Sports 6ederations recogni(ed 'y the Go$ernment of 3ndia, 3ndian
Olympic Association /3OA0 and State.2T Go$ernments in the month of 7anuary each year" As
per the re$ised scheme, the last date for the receipt of nominations will 'e 81

of the Selection Committee, there is no performance deser$ing this award in a particular year, the
award may not 'e gi$en in that year"
The proposals for the award can 'e su'mitted to the +inistry of 1outh Affairs B Sports e$ery
year 'y the +em'ers of ;arliament, State Go$ernments, Sports Authority of 3ndia or 5ational
Sports 6ederations 'y 81st of +ay for the preceding year ending 81st +arch accompanied 'y an
application form on the prescri'ed proforma"

-ronacharya Award was instituted in 19?) to honour eminent coaches who ha$e done
outstanding and meritorious wor! on consistent 'asis, to moti$ate them to dedicate themsel$es
with a singularity of purpose for raising the standards of sportspersons to highest performance in
international e$ents and 'ring glory to the country" The award is gi$en to those who ha$e
produced outstanding achie$ements consistently during three years preceding the Award" Those
who ha$e contri'uted their life time to sports and sports promotion are also considered for this
award" D$ery awardee is gi$en a cash pri(e of >s")"&& la!hs along with a 'ron(e statue of
-ronacharya, a scroll, a suit, a 'la(er and a tie"
