Green tea is the preferred drink for billions of people daily.
In fact, it is the most consumed beverage in the world after
water. There is excellent research that shows it has impor-
tant medicinal value. Research shows that green tea may
help to prevent some types of cancers, help with weight
loss by increasing thermogenesis, prevent atherosclerosis,
inhibit cavities and periodontal disease, reduce halitosis
and inhibit growth of pathogenic microbes for improved
gastrointestinal health.
GREEN TEA POLYPHENOLS WHAT ARE THEY AND
WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT
Green tea is loaded with polyphenols, a class of compounds
with strong antioxidant properties (able to halt the
enzymes that produce carcinogens) and inhibits cancer cell
growth. The major polyphenols in green tea are catechins,
particularly epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocate-
chin-3-gallate, and proanthocyanidins. Of special interest is
epigallocatechin-3-gallate (or EGCG), a polyphenol that
makes up about 10-50% of the total catechin content and
is the most powerful of the catechins with antioxidant
activity about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins
C and E.
THE CANCER-PREVENTIVE EFFECTS
Most human studies assessed green teas cancer-preventive
effects and at least 10 studies showed that green tea
consumption is protective against the development of
esophageal, stomach, lung, colorectal, bladder, gastric and
pancreatic cancers.
Green tea polyphenols are cancer-preventive in four major
ways:
1) They enhance our antioxidant defense systems by stim
ulating antioxidant enzyme activity such as glutathione
peroxidase and catalase.
2) They inhibit some enzyme systems involved in cancer
initiation.
3) They inhibit some enzyme activities involved in tumour
promotion.
4) They inhibit urokinase, a proteolytic enzyme involved
in the increase of tumour size and metastases.
Green tea polyphenols inhibit the formation of nitro-
samines, cancer-causing compounds, formed in the body
when nitrite (from cured bacon or ham, for instance) binds
to amino acids. Human volunteers were given 300 mg of
sodium nitrate and 300 mg of proline along with green tea.
The tested teas, at doses regularly consumed, again exerted
a strong inhibitory effect on endogenous NPRO (nitroso-
proline) formation in humans. The researchers conclusion;
These results indicate that the simultaneous intake of teas
with food products that are being nitrosated within the
stomach of human subjects should exert a protective,
benecial effect (Stich).

It might be preferable to take
green tea as a beverage or in capsule form with meals.
Researchers again veried the green tea and urokinase link.
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate inhibits urokinase, an enzyme
often found in large amounts in human cancers. In a letter
to the science journal, Nature, researcher Jerzy Jankun
wrote: One of the major ingredients of green tea inhibits
urokinase, an enzyme crucial for cancer growthInhibi-
tion of urokinase can decrease tumour size or even cause
complete remission of cancer in mice (Jankun, et al).
GREEN TEA AND CANCER DRUGS
A meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association scientists
reported that the epigallocatechin gallate fraction (EGCG)
of green tea could make cancer drugs up to 20 times more
effective. Researcher Masami Suganuma added EGCG to
tamoxifen and human breast cancer cells. She discovered
that the tamoxifen killed twice as many cancer cells when
mixed with EGCG than tamoxifen alone.
GREEN TEA AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS
Oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDLs), often called
the bad cholesterol, is a major contributor to atherosclero-
sis and heart disease. Now Australian researchers report that
the phenolic compounds in green tea may protect from
LDLs from oxidation better than vitamin C. Here is what
they discovered: Vitamin C postponed LDL oxidation from
79 minutes to 95 minutes. Vitamin E postponed oxidation
to 213 minutes and green tea to 211 minutes. And it only
took one cup of green tea to do it. However, if one drinks

green tea with milk, the antioxidant
effect disappears (Luo, et al).
BENEFICIAL FOR DENTAL CAVITIES
AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Cavities are formed by bacteria that
produce a non-water-soluble glucan
from sugar or other foods. Glucan
adheres to the tooth enamel as hard
plaque. These bacteria also feed on
sugar to generate acids such as lactic
acid in the plaque. These acids then
dissolve the tooth enamel. Experi-
ments by Dr. Hattori showed that
green tea catechins can suppress the
process by which cariogenic (cavity-
causing) bacteria create glucan
(Hattori, et al). Other experiments by
Dr. Sakanaka have veried that green
tea catechin can destroy cariogenic
bacteria (Sakanaka, et al). The research
shows that green tea catechins not
only suppress the formation of plaque
by cariogenic bacteria but also kill the
bacteria themselves.
HELPS FIGHT BAD BREATH
The Japanese have known about the
deodorizing effects of green tea for
centuries, but now there are studies
that show it can reduce bad breath and
even fecal odour. A study demonstrat-
ed the deodorizing action of green tea
polyphenols in a test against methyl
mercaptan, the main compound
responsible for halitosis. Green tea also
has been shown to suppress bad smells
produced by trimethylamine and
ammonia (Aizawa, et al).
ITS ROLE IN WEIGHT REDUCTION
Green tea extracts effects have been
investigated in several in vitro and in
vivo studies. Researchers showed that
green tea extract decreases the diges-
tion of fat in the stomach and intes-
tine by nearly 40% in an experimental
system that mimicked in vivo condi-
tions.

Green tea extract inhibited the
action of gastric and intestinal lipases,
enzymes that break down fat, and also
reduced the emulsication of fats, a
necessary step for their digestion and
absorption. Researchers found that
green tea extract stimulated thermo-
genesis better than caffeine alone, and
also potentiated the thermogenic
action of epinephrine better than caf-
feine or ephedrine. They also com-
pared green tea extract, caffeine, and
placebo in a crossover study in 10 males,
and found that green tea extract
increased 24-hour energy expenditure,
while the other two treatments had no
effect. This indicated that taking green
tea extract caused a signicantly
greater increase than pure caffeine in
24-hour energy expenditure and the
portion of fat calories burned. The
researchers concluded, the green tea
extract may play a role in the control
of body composition via sympathetic
activation of thermogenesis, fat oxid-
ation or both. Results showed that
266 extra calories were burned per day
while taking the green tea product.
The green tea ex- tract also did not
increase heart rate, a problem found in
most thermogenic products. (Dulloo,
et al).
DOSAGE
Natural Factors Green Tea Extract All
You Need Is One provides 300 mg of
green tea extract and contains a mini-
mum of 60% polyphenols and 30%
epigallocatechin gallate and is equiva-
lent to taking 3 cups of green tea. Each
capsule contains less than 1% (3 mg)
of caffeine.
Normally, the amount of green tea
consumed in Japan and other Asian
cultures is about 3 cups per day, pro-
viding about roughly 240-320 milli-
grams of polyphenols.
SAFETY
There are no signicant side effects or
toxicity with green tea consumption.
There are no known adverse reactions.
People hypersensitive to components
of green tea should avoid supplemen-
tation with green tea extract.
Due to lack of long-term safety studies,
pregnant women and nursing mothers
should avoid green tea catechin
supplementation.
Catechins may decrease platelet
aggregation. People on Warfarin or
anticoagulation therapy, or persons
with genetic or acquired bleeding
tendencies should use green tea extract
capsules with caution. It is also pru-
dent to stop supplementation at least 2
weeks before any surgery.
Animal studies suggest that green tea
catechins may enhance the effects of
chemotherapeutic agents such as
Doxorubicin and that they may
ameliorate some of their toxicity.
However, there is no data to support
this.
