Halftime Heros

It was a beautiful night for football in Glasgow this

past Friday, and while the Scotties got the job done
in dismantling Harlem 59-0 in their first conference
contest (now 5-0 with four to go), the halftime show
was highly entertaining as well. Pictured above are our
local NFL Punt, Pass & Kick champions. They are (left
to right) Khye Gamas, Coy Nelson, Rance Rhoads,
Rebeccah Olsen and Hannah Toavs. They will now
advance to Miles City to compete in their respective
age groups at the state level. Action starts at noon
on Sunday, October 5th. As you may recall, Rance

Rhoads advanced all the way to the Regional event

in Denver, Colorado where he and his family took in a
Broncos-Tennessee Titans game.

National Preparedness Month: You Can Be the Hero

September is National Preparedness Month
(NPM). The National Day of Action is tomorrow
(Tuesday, September 30, 2014).
USDAs Farm Service Agency has committed to
participate in Americas PrepareAthon in September
in order to increase preparedness throughout the
U.S. The event, now in its tenth year, is a nationwide,
month-long effort hosted by the Ready Campaign
and Citizen Corps, encouraging households,
businesses and communities to prepare and plan for
emergencies. FSA is participating this year by sharing
helpful tips to educate the local community on the
importance of being prepared for emergencies.
One of NPMs key messages is: be prepared in
the event an emergency causes you to be self-reliant
for three days without utilities and electricity, water
service, access to a supermarket or local services,
or maybe even without response from police, fire
or rescue. Preparing can start with four important
steps:
1. Stay informed. Information is available from
federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial
resources. Access the Ready.gov website to learn
what to do before, during, and after an emergency.
2. Make a plan: Discuss, agree on, and document
an emergency plan with those in your care. For
sample plans, visit the Ready.gov website. Work
together with neighbors, colleagues, and others
to build community resilience.

3. Build a Kit: Keep enough emergency supplies

water, nonperishable food, first aid, prescriptions,
flashlight, and battery-powered radio on hand
for you and those in your care.
4. Get Involved: There are many ways to get
involved especially before a disaster occurs. The
whole community can participate in programs
and activities to make their families, homes and
places of worship safer from risks and threats.
Community leaders agree that the formula for
ensuring a safer homeland consists of volunteers,
a trained and informed public, and increased
support of emergency response agencies during
disasters.
Preparedness is a shared responsibility; it takes a
whole community. This years National Preparedness
Month focuses on turning awareness into action
by encouraging all individuals and all communities
nationwide to make an emergency preparedness plan.

Valley County Transit to receive

another bus from MT DOT
The Montana Department of Transportation is
investing $2.1 million for local and intercity transit
equipment and infrastructure. Vehicles ranging from
45-passenger motor coaches to 5-passenger vans will
be added to fleets around the state. New facilities and
car ports will also be built.
According to Mike Tooley, MDT director, continued
investment in community transit programs benefits not
just those who rely on transit, but enhances community
livability.
Most Montanans can take for granted the ability
to get to the grocery store, doctors and daily activities,
Tooley said. But for many Montanans, these local transit
providers are a life line to meeting basic transportation
needs.
MDT has concentrated on a coordinated process
that encourages agencies in Montana communities to
work together to pool transit resources to better serve
their communities. Reliable transportation is important
to quality of life in a large state like Montana.
Sixteen communities and two intercity providers
will be receiving funding for capital investments. Earlier
this year MDT awarded $7.8 million to providers for
operating expenses.
Funding is awarded through a competitive
process, with applications ranked by need and funding
availability. These Federal Transit Administration funds
are administered by MDT and provided to communities
with a local match rate from 13.42 20 percent.
Valley County Transit in Glasgow will be awarded
with a 19-passenger bus, as will Phillips Transit in
Malta.
