the Management of Head and Neck Pathol ogy Nagi M. Demian, DDS, MD, FACS Mark E. Wong, DDS Editors The management of head and neck pathology is an ever-evolving discipline and the diagnostic and treatment modalities involved are as varied as the taxonomy of the different diseases included. The purpose of this issue of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America is not to provide a comprehensive re- view of pathology but to describe some of the adjunctive therapies and measures used in the management of these conditions. Several dis- ciplines participate in the treatment of head and neck pathology and we have received con- tributions from the major participants. While the management of pathology and head and neck malignancy may not be a principal focus for many oral and maxillofacial surgeons, extensive opportunities exist to care for these patients, and familiarity with current treatment app- roaches is necessary. Topics representing new and dynamic treatments, such as the manage- ment of necrosis of bone secondary to antires- portive therapy, and others that oral and maxillofacial surgeons may not be familiar with, such as chemoradiation therapy for cancer pa- tients, were included. Although an exhaustive re- view of head and neck pathology was never the goal or within the scope of this publication, ef- forts were made to make this edition a practical and useful review of some of the more significant developments in the management of head and neck pathology. The editors thank our participating authors, many of whomare clinical collaborators. Their con- tributions stand as a testimony to the importance of multidisciplinary collaborations in the treatment of patients with head and neck pathology. Nagi M.
