DEATH AT
EASTER TIME
Each mortal has its own horizon of fate.
An artist, moreover, has his canvass...
No one knows in advance where his fate will take him, or where his life ends?!
Chakho passed away at Easter night...
It was his last way;
The way home...
By the way, next day Sasha Rekhviashvili asked me, what has happened with

him, how he has died?!

I told him while reading a book.
Just like Dostoevsky...
He lived noiselessly he hasnt bothered anyone with his ambitions.
He was not peoples artist either ocially, or in figurative meaning
I even dont know whether he loved this people.
He loved a man, thats right!

He was well aware of what he was and of the value of his paintings.
But he hasnt sold any of his paintings in his life.
He didnt sell his own self either...
His works have no fiscal equivalent yet.
But they have value, thats right!
Chakho did not live like an anchoret, but he did seem such.
He did look such!

He hasnt had festive biography.

There hasnt been a place for him in the room at the top.
Neither his paintings are festive, representative...
They are not bright and dazzling show.
In the modern Georgian painting reality Chakho did leave a precedent of fabulous honesty ethical vision and contemplation.
He has been walking in some sacral spaces.

And in these spaces, as in one river, he used to enter as many times as he

wanted.
That was why he would repeat that strange Black Sea of his.
Chakho has been searching at painting image some periodic system, has
been enriching minimalist ideographemes and also abstract caligrams with
maximum chromatic instrumentation.
He was a master of tonal phrasing as well.

An author is often recognized in his paintings.

Chakhos works are not elegant, groomed; they are not polished.
Neither are they faultless.
One day I saw him in grey suit.
I was surprised.
One lady presented me, its new and also fashionable he told me with a shy
smile.

I think she is in love with me as well.

But nothing is fashionable in his painting.
Neither is anything new at least.
His own emotion of painting is new; new and not yet used.
I have never seen second hand of western art of painting on his artistic body!
No labels can be sewn on Chakhos art actual, non-actual...
He hasnt tried to win with non-conformist caprices either.

By the way, I have first heard this name Chakho from Elguja Amashukeli
a brilliant artist and he also played football well, he said.
Generally, actual is associated with briefest, fast, and even premature.
There can be found no place in Chakhos pictures for short-day objects.
He has color, also form and line forged.
His pictures, with thousand times re-painted texture, preserve mystery in their
depth unseen trace of authors being here, in this world; the trace, as wound,

as stigmata.
His pictures are neither illustrations of existential self-torture nor registration
of naked emotions.
One can find not single artificial fistula in Chakhos opuses.
He has not left decorative-operation paintings.
And, neither his personal dramas were performed, nor invented.
He, along with multi-layered painting, also had wonderful, unusual graphics.

Once I have overturned one of his paintings.

Crock was painted on a sheet of paper, which turned out to be a protocol of
the ministerial council of last century 80s, with a list of wages of academicians
and corresponding members, sent from the Soviet Union Academy of Arts to
Georgian Academy of Science.
Chakho could not have dreamed of such wages...
However, these immortal academicians still in the depth of their heart, probably,

wished the vision that Chakho possessed.

But, no wages are given for such vision, are they?!
Chakhos hand determined price and not ministerial council, neither chairmen
nor deputies of which anyone remembered...
He has written on the other side of his one opus: The more pressure, the
more resistance!
And still, it was not his habit to be coquettish of having a crown of martyr.

Neither did he boast of the image of Bohemian artist.

He, generally, has never been coquettish.
You cannot say about Chakho how much he drinks, how good time he has
usually...
He was given Grand Prix at one of the festivals.
Prize-winner artists left Blue Gallery for Rike.
I, as a jury member, had also to be with them.

He tried to have good time there, but time and again became sad.
And his sadness was more real and expressive than ecient words and toasts
of others.
I have never heard from Chakho anything bad about any artist.
The only thing I have remembered is what he said about one self-recognized
classic he is a liar! Look at his pictures, there is a lie in every stroke of his...
But he could express admiration.

David accepted me to the Academy; when I submitted documents, he

evaluated well my pictures and told me: My dear boy never let your hand
off your pencil.
And it may be said that he did so.
He painted all the time, everywhere and painted everything.
He even painted something at the bus-stop.
He has been searching for something; not in fantasies, but in everyday reality.

He painted in the world, in which he was searching for support by painting.

The main thing that makes his painting outstanding and dierent is
non-acceptance of the surrounding world (and not much talked regime)
as ontologically unreal.
He had some primary intention of a man as arthropos; the intention of radical
criticism of this world as of discussion.
Yes, he could observe critical horizon of anthromorphy and turn this horizon

into metaphoric (and not metaformic) construction.

Thickness of painting, closely joined to a strong picture, acquires time, space
and rhythm just in such constructions...
Such painting is not done for gourmand on-lookers only.
Such pictures are designated for dierent reflection of an eye; to some
post-Cezanne reflection
You cannot say Chakho had a tasty life.

Earthly pleasures were alien for him; and not understandable either...
Jean Cocteau used to say The artist should live, and gain his name after
death.
Chakho has lived.
And he will gain his name now.
Probably, he wont...
This wont be a great tragedy either!

P.S. In Giorgi Shengelayas film Pirosmani the artist dies at Easter time.
This is a metaphor; the metaphor of artists death, which should be followed
by the Easter.
I dont want at all to add one more performer to Pirosmanis role in person
of Chakho.
I think, however: Chakhos death at Easter time was not by chance.
Or, yes, it really was casual...

Chakho believed in eternity, or in the necessity of chance...
Chakho was ahead of the Easter.
And he attended the Easter, too.
