1. Inorganic zinc primers shall meet the requirements of SSPC Paint 20, type I, Level I (85% metallic zinc in the dry film). Zinc rich
epoxy shall meet the requirements of SSPC Paint 20, Type II, Level 1. Where required by local regulations, low VOC versions shall
be used.
3.Coating applied to faying surfaces of bolted slip critical structural joints shall be qualified in accordance with "Test Method to 4.
Determine the Slip Coefficient for Coatings Used in Bolted J oints" as adopted by the Research Council on Structural Connections.
4.Two component aliphatic polyurethanes shall meet or exceed the requirements of SSPC Paint 36, Level 2.
4.Coating system codes shall include the numeric designation for color in appendix B. For example pipe in firewater service would
be coated with system T with a red finish color so the coating system code would be T9.
5. P44 shall be suitable for top coating after long term (1 year plus) atmosphere exposure (long term re-coat window).
2.P03 shall be suitable for cryogenic service and continuous operating temperatures up to 220C (425F).
NOTES to System Code:
1.For some piping systems, System Code G may be designated on the Piping Line List. The use of System Code G means that
only galvanizing per AS/NZS 4680 is allowed.
2.MS stands for use of the Manufacturers Standard Coating System. Coating System must be suitable for industrial marine
environment.
3.P44 may be used in lieu of P03 for items other than bulk pipe, when the operating temperature is below 95C (200F).

Note
1 Complete details of the Manufacturers Standard coating system shall be submitted for review and acceptance prior
to the start of work. The system proposed shall be suitable for use in an industrial marine environment. Only
coating systems deemed suitable for an industrial marine environment by the Buyer shall be accepted. Such
systems typically include high performance zinc rich and/or epoxy coatings applied over an abrasive blast cleaned
surface (SSPC-SP 10, Near White Blast Cleaning as a minimum).
2 Galvanized surfaces to be coated shall be prepared by abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with Section 7.3.
3 The splash zone coating shall extend from the bottom of the deck to a minimum of 3 meters (10 feet) below the LAT.
4 Pile coating shall extend a minimum of 3 meters (10 feet) into the mud zone.

Flange surfaces (except gasket surfaces) & bolt holes shall be cleaned and coated the same as the adjacent
component. Uncoated gasket contact surfaces shall be protected with a temporary preservative in accordance with
Section 4.2.

Underside of tank bottom plate shall be coated with two coats of the specified epoxy, Coating System X. Surface
preparation and dry film thickness shall be in accordance with manufacturers published instructions.
7 Clips, supports, lugs, insulation support rings and other appurtenances that may protrude from the insulation, shall
be blast cleaned and coated with the coating system used on adjacent insulated areas. If the adjacent insulated
area is not specified to be coated, the coating system specified for uninsulated items in the appropriate operating
temperature range shall be applied. The coating system shall extend onto the shell for a minimum of six inches
around the nozzle or appurtenance.

For tie-ins between existing and new equipment, existing coatings on connecting weld areas or flanges shall have
coatings touched-up to the requirements of this specification.
9 P44 may be used for the 1st coat instead of P03.
10 If the maximum inlet or outlet temperature is 218C (425F) or less, Coating System I may be applied to the entire
shell & tube exchanger to include supports, nozzles, and saddles. For insulated exchangers operating above 121
C (250F), nozzles, body flanges, and clips or other appurtenances shall be coated as if uninsulated. The coating
system shall extend onto the shell for a minimum of six inches around the nozzle or appurtenance.

Carbon steel pipe, designated to be insulated with personnel protection insulation, shall be coated the same as
uninsulated pipe. Coating system selection shall be based on actual operating conditions.

For bulk pipe, the two coat System I shall be applied directly to the shop applied P01 primer. Holiday testing of the
complete system (P01/P03/P03) shall be conducted in accordance with Section 9.3.3.
13 Zinc rich epoxy (P02) may be used for repairs when the operating temperature is below 149C (300F).
14 The manufacturers standard coating system may be upgraded per Coating System H or HA provided the surface
preparation and coating is suitable for upgrading. Coatings that have been misapplied or which are incompatible
with the upgrade system shall be removed and reworked. A small test patch of P05 shall be applied and visually
inspected for wrinkling and lifting and/or subject to an adhesion test to confirm compatibility prior to the coating of
the entire unit. One acceptable adhesion test method is ASTM D 3359, Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test. An
acceptable test result would be either 4A per Test Method A or 4B per Test Method B. Surface preparation shall be
SSPC-SP 1 and SSPC-SP 2 prior to application of P05.
15 When an item is constructed of both carbon steel and stainless steel, the system specified for stainless steel shall
be used on the entire surface. If the adjacent stainless steel is not specified to be coated, then Coating System I
shall be used to coat the carbon steel and the weld area (if any) in the temperature range up to 218C (425F).
Under no circumstances shall zinc rich coating be applied to stainless steel.

Contact surfaces of steel members to be jointed by high tensile bolting in friction type joints shall be galvanized or
primed only with P01.
17 One Coat of P44 (system IS) is required for ocean shipment and site storage protection, only. Abrasive blast
cleaning prior to coating application shall result in a uniform profile of 25 to 50m (1 to 2 mils). Field repairs of
coating applied for shipping protection are not required. Packaging and storage procedures may be used in lieu of
coating for shipping and storage protection, with Buyer review and acceptance of the detailed requirements.
18 Stainless valves shall be properly packaged for export purposes. With prior approval of the Buyer, Stainless valves
may receive a single coat of P44, in accordance with System IS, in lieu of proper export packaging. Carbon steel
portions of stainless steel valves shall be coated with the Manufacturers Standard coating system suitable for an
industrial marine environment. The system proposed shall be shall be submitted for review and approval prior to
application.

This system applies to components, which require coating over galvanizing to meet coating color-coding
requirements. Galvanized surfaces to be coated shall be prepared by blast cleaning in accordance with Section 7.3
of this specification.
20 Does not include small diameter stainless steel tubing. Stainless steel tubing, electrical terminals, instrument
boxes, gauge boards, contol panels and cable trays are not to be coated.
21 Coating of shop primed (P44), uninsulated, bulk, stainless steel pipe operating up to 95C(200F) shall be
completed in the field as follows. Prepare and coat field welds and damaged primer using the same primer used in
the shop. The shop applied P44 primer shall be overcoated within the material manufacturers published recoat
time and or prepared in accordance with the coating manufactures instructions. Apply a full finish coat of P09 using
the accepted product from the same supplier as the shop primer.

For shop primed (P44), uninsulated, bulk, stainless steel pipe operating from 95C to 205C (200F to 400F)
completely remove the shop primer by abrasive blast cleaning and apply coating system DA.

For shop primed (P44), uninsulated, bulk, stainless steel pipe operating from 205C to 540C (400F to 1000F)
completely remove the shop primer by abrasive blast cleaning and apply coating system C.
24 Coating of shop primed (P44), insulated, bulk, stainless steel pipe operating from 0C to 95C (32F to 200F) shall
be completed in the field as follows. Prepare and coat field welds and damaged primer using the same primer used
in the shop. The shop applied P44 primer shall be overcoated within the material manufacturers published recoat
time and or prepared in accordance with the coating manufactures instructions. Apply a full finish coat of P03 using
the accepted product from the same supplier as the shop primer.
25 Individual components (structural members, pipe, fittings, valves, filters, tanks, vessels, etc) of skid-mounted
equipment packages shall be coated as noted for each individual item listed in this schedule Bolted structural steel

All surfaces that are uncoated upon arrival at the jobsite, or are coated for shipping protection only, shall be
pressure water washed at a minimum of 1200kPa pressure with fresh clean potable water upon receipt.
27 Surfaces that will be in immersion, in a splash zone or in marine service shall be tested for salt contamination prior
to abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with Section 7.1.2
28 All bulk carbon steel pipe shall be prepared and primed in the shop with one coat of P01. Subsequent coats shall
be applied in the field as appropriate in accordance with Section 1.6. See note 12 for shop primed bulk carbon steel
pipe that will be insulated and operate up to 120C (250F).
29 No additional coats are required on shop primed bulk pipe.
30 Holiday testing of the complete system (P01/P07/P07) shall be conducted in accordance with Section 9.3.3.
31 The P01 shop primer applied to bulk pipe does not require removal and shall be allowed to remain.
32 Pile coating shall extend from abovegrade to a minimum of 8 meters (27 feet) into the soil.
33
Threaded fasteners on stationary equipment for joints within the scope of the fabricator shall be coated after
hydrostatic testing using the same coating system specified for the associated flange.
