STAT CORNER
WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS
LUT WILLIAMS
BCSP Editor
Two nationally televised games involving
four teams ranked in the BCSP Top Ten high-
light the schedule in this frst week of October.
In a showdown of teams playing some of
the best football in the black college ranks right
now, BCSP No. 2 Alcorn State (4-1, 2-0) hosts
BCSP No. 3 Alabama State (4-1, 3-0) in an
early SWAC East Division Top Ten showdown
Thursday (6:30 p.m.) in Lorman, Mississippi.
And down in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta
Saturday (3:30 p.m.), BCSP No. 1 North Caro-
lina A&T (4-1, 1-0) meets No. 7 South Caro-
lina State (3-2, 1-0) in an early MEAC throw-
down dubbed the Atlanta Football Classic.
ESPNU will televise the Alcorn State/Ala-
bama State contest Thursday with ESPNU and
ESPN3 carrying the A&T/SC State match up.
Both Alcorn State and Alabama State are
coming off big wins over West Division con-
tenders.
Alabama State is coming off a 38-3 win
over BCSP No. 8 Texas Southern that knocked
the Tigers from the unbeaten ranks. The Hornets
limited TSU to 201 total yards and kept them
off the scoreboard except for a 29-yard second
quarter feld goal.
Alcorn State manhandled defending con-
ference champ Southern, 56-16, putting up 652
yards of total offense including 410 yards on the
ground.
"Alcorn, they're playing 'lights out' right
now," said Alabama State head coach Reg-
gie Barlow of his opponent this week. "We've
had some success, particularly our defense, but
we've made some mistakes too. We've got our
hands full."
ASU senior running back Malcolm Cyrus
leads the SWAC and all of black college foot-
ball putting up 144 rushing yards per game (See
STAT CORNER). His 722 total rushing yards
are second most in the FCS while his 144 yards
per game is fourth.
Alcorn leads the SWAC in scoring at 47.0
points per game and is tops in scoring defense
surrendering just 13.8 points per contest. The
Braves are also tops in total offense (514.2 ypg.),
total defense (262.8), rushing offense (318.0)
and rushing defense (86.0). They are eighth in
pass offense at a not-too-shabby 196.2 yards per
game and second in pass defense, giving up just
176.8 ypg.
Alabama State is second in rushing offense
at 289.6 yards per game. The game sizes up as a
doozy.
The A&T/SC State Atlanta match up should
also be special. SC State knocked A&T from the
unbeaten ranks a year ago at the Classic and
went on to gain a share of the conference title.
A&T is not only looking for revenge but to lay
claim to being a real contender for this year's
MEAC crown. Saturday's game will go a long
way to telling whether the Aggies are ready for
that next step.
Key for A&T will be whether star running
back Tarik Cohen is able to play. Cohen has
been nursing a knee injury and was held out
of the Aggies win Saturday over Howard. But
A&T has speed and playmakers across the board
including WR/KR Desmond Lawrence.
Freshman quarterback Hassan Klugh
played the entire second half in relief of injured
starter Kwashon Quick vs. Howard while fresh-
man running back Marquel Cartwright ran for
135 yards and two TDs in his frst start in place
of Cohen.
SC State has been struggling to fnd produc-
tivity and consistency on offense. The Bulldogs
are scoring just 21.4 points per game compared
to the Aggies' league-best 38.4 ppg. But the Bull-
dog defense is as tough as ever. Minus the 73
points it surrendered in a blowout loss to Clem-
son, it is surrendering just 10 points per game.
A&T currently leads the MEAC giving up just
15.6 points per contest.
Elsewhere in the SWAC, resurgent Gram-
bling State (2-3, 2-0), on top of the SWAC West
now, plays at homecoming (2 p.m.) at Alabama
A&M (2-3, 1-1).
In the MEAC, FCS No. 17 and BCSP No. 4
Bethune-Cookman (3-1, 0-0) has its frst con-
ference game on the road at Delaware State
(1-4, 1-0). After a week off, North Carolina
Central (1-3, 0-0) opens conference play host-
ing Howard (1-4, 0-2), who is looking for its frst
conference win. Morgan State (2-3, 1-1) travels
to Florida A&M to take on the winless Rattlers
(0-4, 0-0). Savannah State (0-4, 0-2), also look-
ing for its frst win, welcomes in Norfolk State
(1-4, 1-0) for homecoming (2 p.m.).
In the CIAA, six South Division teams will
play at their North Division counterparts.
Livingstone (4-0, 1-0) looks to remain the
only unbeaten team in black college football in
a 1 p..m date at Elizabeth City State (1-3, 0-1).
Winston-Salem State (3-1, 1-0) is on the road
at Chowan (1-3, 0-1). Fayetteville State (0-4,
0-1) looks for its frst win at Lincoln (1-3, 0-1),
Shaw (2-2, 1-0) is at Virginia Union (3-1, 0-0),
Saint Augustines (1-3, 1-0) is at Virginia State

MEAC program and College Fair event.
"I would like to thank Mayor Paul Fraim, the City Council, Norfolk

Women's Basketball coaches, city staff and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim.
"I'm pleased MEAC has chosen Norfolk to serve as basketball tour-
