For centuries, the UKs fnest buildings have used decorative coving
and cornices to add style and distinction to prestige living areas.
Hand-created by skilled craftsmen, the early classical mouldings were
generally based on designs from ancient Greek and Roman architecture,
with features such as futing, acanthus leaves, dentil and vases.
As architectural styles changed, plasterers found new ways of refecting
this in their cove designs. Gothic and French styling, as well as more
exotic Egyptian, Indian and Japanese, have clearly infuenced cove
craftsmen and designers through the years, with perhaps the most
elaborate of all designs, based on modelled fruit, fowers and foliage,
being created by the early Victorians.
Whilst the time and skill taken to create these elaborate features
by hand meant that only the most affuent could afford to decorate
their homes in this way, todays advanced moulding and extrusion
technology has enabled us to recreate many of the classic styles using
modern moulding materials, bringing the style and distinction of coving
within the grasp of all homeowners.
To upgrade a period style home or create a period interior choose from
the range of classic designs of our Artex Heritage range, or select from
our contemporary range if you want the style and decorative benefts
of coving, but with a modern clean line fnish.
Regardless of the style you choose, our high quality, high defnition
coves will fnish your room to perfection, adding that extra touch of
class that will make your home feel special.

The Artex Heritage range consists of a variety of original
plaster moulded designs ideal for recreating period
features or replicating style from a bygone era.
The question often posed was, Which design is right
for my property?.
Working with The Modern Interiors Research Centre (MIRC)
at Kingston University enabled Artex to produce a guide to
the Artex Heritage range showing which designs suit the
period of your property.
However, the dating of the designs was more of a challenge
than the MIRC frst imagined.
Artex would like to thank Professor Anne Massey, Professor
Penny Sparke and Dr. Patricia Lara.
As part of our work, we welcome co-operation with industry.
Our relationship with Artex began with dating their collection
of coving and ceiling roses. The mouldings for these plaster casts
date back to the 1930s, and it was our brief to identify the styles
and periods for each profle. We were able to date styles from the
Victorians through to the modern day identifying egg-and-dart,
acanthus leaves, futing, swags and foliage in this fascinating
collection. The Edwardian revivals of the classical were particularly
intriguing as part of the detective story.
We are sure our ongoing relationship with Artex will produce further
interesting projects to help the homeowner or professional, eager
to reproduce an authentic domestic interior. We wish you well with
your projects!
Professor Anne Massey

INSTALLATION
FIxING COVE TIPS FROM THE PROFESSIONALS
STAGE 1 PREPARING
Before you start, make sure wall and ceiling backgrounds are sound, clean and dry.
Remove wallpaper and any loose or faking paint, and wash the wall to remove all
traces of wallpaper and paste.
Draw guidelines along the wall and ceiling to correspond with the edges of the coving,
using the dimensions shown for the relevant product and allowing for the thickness of
adhesive to be used. Scratch plastered or painted areas which will be in contact with
the moulding lightly with a sharp pointed tool to give a good key for the adhesive.
STAGE 2 CuTTING
NB: Artex decorative plaster mouldings are
made from fbre-reinforced plaster and
should be handled with care to reduce the
risk of damage.
If you are not using pre-cut corner mouldings,
you will need to measure and cut the cove
to size.
Always use a Gyproc Universal Cove Mitre Box
when cutting internal or external corners, as
this will give you exactly the right angle for
a perfect corner joint. Lightly sandpaper any
rough edges to remove burrs.
Remember to keep the cove square in the box,
and keep the product supported and level
using a piece of wood the same thickness
as the base of the mitre box.
There are four different mitre cuts involved
in creating internal and external corners.
Make sure you know which angle is required
each time you prepare to cut.
Advice on preparing stop ends and
non-standard angles, and using Gyproc
Cornice Strips, is available on request.
STAGE 3 FIxING
Start from the most visible corner and work around the room.
Apply a 3mm thickness of Artex Multi-Purpose Adhesive to all surfaces of the cove
that will be in contact with the wall or ceiling, ensuring you apply evenly along the full
length of the profle.
If using Gyproc LITE Cove Sealant to ft lightweight profles, apply an even bead of
6-8mm thickness to all surfaces in contact with the wall or ceiling, as above.
Gently press the moulding into position until the adhesive begins to squeeze out, and
remove any excess adhesive this can be used as a fller for corners etc. You may need
assistance if working with cove lengths of 2 metres and over.
If necessary, support the moulding in position using small nails lightly tapped into the
wall or ceiling immediately below and in front of the moulding (do not drive nails fully
home as these will be removed once the adhesive has dried).
STAGE 4 DECORATION
After making good all joints, allow to dry thoroughly before applying normal
decorative fnishes.
Paper-faced Gyproc Cove products should be treated with Gyproc Drywall Primer
or Artex Sealer to seal the surface prior to applying a decorative fnish.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
DECORATION AND MAINTENANCE
Gyproc and Artex decorative mouldings can be painted to suit any interior scheme.
DuRABILITY
Gyproc and Artex decorative mouldings are designed to form a permanent feature.
STORAGE AND HANDLING
Careful handling and smooth transportation will reduce the risk of damage and ensure
best results. Always carry plaster cove on its edge and ensure it is well supported along its
entire length. Use on-package handles where available to ensure damage is minimised.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
Cut in well ventilated conditions to avoid dust getting into eyes or excessive
material on skin.
Take care when drilling to avoid concealed pipes or electrical cables.
Always handle plaster products with care and avoid over-tightening fxing screws.
Keep tools and equipment out of the reach of children.
Detailed Health & Safety information is available from the manufacturer.
TOOLS
Having the right tools for the job ensures you achieve a professional fnish. This easy-to-
use reference table can help you plan the ftting of decorative plaster mouldings.
