Too much household clutter is not only unsightly
but also can contribute to a stressful environment. nn Chil-
drens toys are often key contributors to homes overrun
with clutter, but with a tt growing family ff and birthday and
holiday gifts streaming in, it can be challenging for par-
ents to tame toy-related clutter.
Parents who have aa hosted play dates know that once
the fun ends their youngsters rooms often appear over-
run with toys. Kids hav aa e a funny knack of taking out
every toy they own without putting their toys away. But
with a f tt ew ff tips, anyone can conquer the clutter created
by toys.
Take TT stock of what you have aa . Taking TT inv nn entory helps
to determine which toys can ultimately be donated or
discarded. Look for duplicates, similar items, broken
toys, and items that are seldom used.
Start to org r anize. When you have aa everything laid out in
clear view, start to divide and conquer. Create groups
in which to sort the toys. Dolls should be in one pile,
building blocks in another and so on. Figure out a sys-
tem that works for your family ff . You YY may nd that ac-
tive, sports-related items can be moved to the garage,
while board games and books may be moved to a fam- ff
ily room or a community closet in the house to free up
more space in playrooms. Seasonal toys can be stored
away in an attic or basement until they are needed.
Create accessible storage. Toys should be stored where
kids can easily access them. Clear bins are great for
storage, and such bins come in a variety of sizes. Con-
struct cubbies in the playroom where these bins can be
kept. Be sure they are nearly ground level and not too
heavy aa so that children can easily get to their toys come
play time.
Construct or buy a toy chest. A toy chest can house
larger r toys and act as a receptacle for fast ff cleanup
when kids need to tidy up before company arrives.
Such chests are good for storing larger r cars and trucks
or the hordes of stuffed ff animals kids accumulate.
Shelving gets things off ff the foor. Display collectibles
that cannot be damaged on shelves. This makes sure
they are still on display but not in jeopardy of being
mishandled by curious youngsters.
Donate toys kids no longer use. It can be a tough job,
but children should work with you to thin out their toy
collections. Designate a certain portion of items that
need to go. Bring them to a consignment shop or do-
nate them to kids in need.
Org r anizing youngsters toy collections can be a dif- ff
fcult job, but such org r anization is essential to keep a tidy
home.

the Kid Toy Clutter
How to Acclimate to Your YY New Community
Moving is seldom easy. But even after all
of the boxes have been unpacked and the
furniture moved in, some of the difculty of
moving remains. Much of that remaining
struggle can be traced to adjusting to your
new environment.
Though many people settle into a new
residence after a short period of time, ac-
climating yourself to a new community is
a taller order, especially for those without
friends or family already entrenched in the
community. The following are a handful of
ways men and women who recently relo-
cated to a new community can acclimate
themselves to their new surroundings.
Join a local community organization.
Local community organizations provide
great opportunities to meet new people
and learn about a town or neighborhood.
Parents may nd such organizations more
accessible, as associations that focus on
local youngsters are quite common. Adults
can join parental organizations sponsored
by their childrens school or volunteer with
an extracurricular organization, such as
a local youth sports program. These are
great ways for moms and dads to meet
fellow parents and begin forming new
friendships.
Singles or married couples without
children also can take advantage of com-
munity organizations. Volunteer with an
environmental cleanup group or sign up to
play in a recreational sports league with
neighbors in your age group. Opportunities
to assimilate into your new community
abound, it just takes a little effort on your
part to get involved.
Make an effort to meet your neigh-
bors. The days of yore when everyone
knew their neighbors are largely a thing of
the past, but that doesnt mean you cant
make an effort to meet the people who live
next door. Once you have settled in, knock
on your next door neighbors doors and
introduce yourself. If you really want to go
the extra mile, host a casual backyard bar-
becue and invite your neighbors and their
families. Such an affair can be a great way
to break the ice and you might just nd
your neighbors share similar interests.
Dont be a shut-in. Communities are
often home to numerous traditions, and
many such traditions are aimed at increas-
ing the sense of community within a given
town. Summer carnivals or winter holiday
balls can make for a fun way to assimilate
into a community and meet your neigh-
bors. Leave the couch and your television
behind to take advantage of such opportu-
nities when they present themselves.
Join a professional organization.
Many professionals nd the demands of
their careers are simply too great to give
them the amount of time they need to
fully assimilate into their new communi-
ties. In such instances, men and women
might want to join their local professional
organization, which can help them meet
professional peers and make contacts that
can pay both professional and personal
dividends. If no such organization exists in
your community, consider starting one.
The difculty of moving is often consid-
ered a burden on children. But adults may
struggle to acclimate to a new community
as well. Making that adjustment and learn-
ing to thrive in your new community may
require some creativity and a little extra
effort on your part, but it can be done.
