Regarding the current case, FrontPageAfrica
has learned that the Duncan's girlfriend
is said to be upbeat but is currently under
along with some eight other members of her
household in Dallas, Texas. She had just
sent for him from Liberia and he took sick.
The CDC has been visiting her every day
since he was hospitalized Sunday. Her job has
been supportive but she has been asked to stay
home only as a precaution. So she remains
under quarantine along with eight persons
in the house where she lives. The CDC will
keep coming to her and making sure shes
OK for the next 21 days," a family source told
FrontPageAfrica Wednesday.
Monrovia
T
hree months after Patrick Sawyer became the frst airborne
carrier of the deadly Ebola virus, another traveler from
Liberia has inserted Liberia back in the headlines with the
report late Tuesday night of the frst diagnosed case of the
deadly virus in the U.S. state of Dallas, Texas.
Prior to the imported case from Liberia, four American aid workers
who became infected in West Africa have been fown back to the U.S.
for treatment after they became sick. They were treated in special
isolation facilities at hospitals in Atlanta and Nebraska. Three have
recovered. A U.S. doctor exposed to the virus in Sierra Leone is under
observation in a similar facility at the National Institutes of Health.
The U.S. reportedly has only four such isolation units, although the
CDC says there is no need to move the latest patient because virtually
any hospital can provide the proper care and infection control.
The yet-to-be identifed Liberian, according to U.S. Center for
Disease Control, recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas, sending
chills through the area's West African community whose leaders
urged caution to prevent spreading the virus.
The unidentifed man was critically ill and has been in isolation at
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, federal health
offcials said Tuesday.
Properly Screened Before Boarding, Says
FrontPageAfrica has verifed the name of the passenger as Thomas
Eric Duncan who prior to his departure worked as a truck driver at
Safeway Cargo Inc, on Broad Street. Airport authorities confrmed to
FrontPageAfrica Wednesday that Duncan, like all others who boarded
the SN Brussels fight on September 19, 2014 was thoroughly screened
before boarding the plane. The person traveled on 20th, showed no
signs of illness as their temperature when screened at the airport was
normal. They developed a fever on the 24th, were diagnosed on the
28th. The person lives in Liberia and was visiting family in Dallas,
Texas. As the CDC Director
Thomas Frieden underscored they posed no threat to the airline or
passenger during the trip, a senior airport offcial told FrontPageAfrica
Wednesday. Liberia Airport authorities told FPA Wednesday that
since July 26, 2014 they have screened we have screened nearly
10,000 passengers. This is nothing like the Patrick
Sawyer case, we have a better system in place now, says Binyah
Kesselly, Chair of the Board of the Liberia Airport Authority.
FPA has also learned that several Liberian government offcials also
boarded the fight but that the passenger reportedly switched to a
Delta fight for Texas area out of Brussels.
Ebola symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and
bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the
virus. The disease is not contagious until
symptoms begin, and it takes close contact with bodily fuids to
spread.
More than 3,000 people have already died of Ebola in West Africa and
a small number of US aid workers have recovered after being fown to
the US. In Liberia at least 1,983 deaths have been recorded.
It is still unclear how the patient became infected but the CDC and
Texas health offcials say it is possible that he would have to have
been in close contact with someone who was sick with or died from
Ebola in Liberia. Ebola spreads in bodily fuids such as blood, vomit
or diarrhea. And those fuids have to get inside your body through the
mouth, eyes or nose, or in a cut or via a needle stick. The virus doesnt
spread in the air and it cannot persist on surfaces like fu viruses can.
The Robertsfeld Airport has made remarkable improvements in the
screening of passengers since the Patrick Sawyer controversy. The
U.S. Center for Disease Control has been working directly with the
airport staff over the past couple of months to ensure that proper and
effective screening procedures are in place.
Sawyer it can recalled boarded an Asky Airline Flight out of the
Spriggs Payne Airfeld on July 23, 2014 but unlike the current case,
Sawyer showed symptoms of the virus while the plane was en route,
according to Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris. Sawyer,
a consultant for the Liberian Ministry of Finance, arrived Lagos on
July 23 to attend an ECOWAS convention in Calabar but became
terribly ill on the airplane just before it touched down in Lagos.
In her fnal report, the late Nigerian doctor A.S. Adadeveoh, at the First
Consultants Medical Centre Limited explained that Sawyer, 40-year
arrived at the hospital with symptoms suggestive of Malaria (fever,
headache, extreme weakness) on Sunday night (20th July 2014).
Sawyer was fully conscious and gave us his clinical history and told
us he is a Senior Diplomat from Liberia. Laboratory investigations
confrmed malaria whilst other test for HIV, Hepatitis B&C were
negative. He was admitted and treatment commenced. However,
due to the fact that he was not responding to treatment, but rather
was developed hemorrhagic symptoms we further questioned him.
He denied having been in contact with any persons with EVD (Ebola
Virus Disease) at home, in any hospital or at any burial, the late
Nigerian doctor wrote.
Ironically, Sawyers sister had died of the deadly virus, a few days
before. Nigerian medical authorities, not relying on his account,
conducted further tests for possible Infectious Hemorrhagic Disease,
especially Ebola Virus Disease, based on the fact that he was a
Liberian citizen and the recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in
that country.
We immediately isolated/quarantined the patient, commenced barrier
nursing and simultaneously contacted the Lagos State Ministry of
Health and the Federal Ministry of Health to inquire where further
laboratory tests could be performed as we had a high index of
suspicion of possible Ebola Virus Disease, the doctor wrote. We
refused for him to be let out of the hospital in spite of intense pressure,
as we were told that he was a senior ECOWAS offcial and had an
important role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar, cross
river state. The initial test results from LUTH laboratory indicated a
signal of possible Ebola Virus Disease, but required confrmation.
Limited information regarding the current case makes it diffcult to
determine how the infected person who transported the virus to the
U.S. became infected.
Girlfriend Quarantined, but Upbeat
Regarding the current case, FrontPageAfrica has learned that the
patients girlfriend is said to be upbeat but is currently under along
with some eight other members of her household in Dallas, Texas.
She had just sent for him from Liberia and he took sick. The CDC
has been visiting her every day since he was hospitalized Sunday. Her
job has been supportive but she has been asked to stay home only as a
precaution. So she remains under quarantine along with eight persons
in the house where she lives. The CDC will keep coming to her and
making sure shes OK for the next 21 days," a family source told
FrontPageAfrica Wednesday.
But CDC offcials says, the patient admitted himself to a local
emergency room but was sent home with antibiotics because he didnt
present symptoms of the fu or any other contagious, serious illness.
On September 28 the man was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian
Hospital by ambulance where hes been ever since.
The CBS affliate Channel 11, quoting CDC offcials reported Tuesday
that patient was critically ill, but the hospital wont comment on his
condition citing patient privacy. They did tell CBS 11 News however
that the patient is communicating with them and able to easily express
when he is hungry.
It was only after the patient arrived back at Presbyterian Hospital
on Sunday that health workers checked his travel history and started
trying to determine if he could possibly have Ebola, according to
the report.
The patient remains in a special isolation unit of the Intensive
Care unit and was being watched through a glass wall. Doctors say
an important part of his treatment includes making sure he is well
hydrated. The Presbyterian Hospital where the patient is admitted,
has been following the Ebola threat closely for months; they not only
planned for a case, but also had a crisis preparedness meeting just a
week before the man showed up in the ER.
Texas Following Lagos Steps
Like in the Sawyer case, authorities in Texas have already begun
tracking down family, friends and anyone else who may have come
in close contact with the Liberian and could be at risk as offcials
cautioned that there are no other suspected cases in Texas.
According to the Associated Press, the Dallas mayor's offce says
the EMS crew members who transported the patient have been
quarantined, just to be safe. People infected with Ebola usually start
to show symptoms within about eight days, but the longest known
incubation period is 21 days. No one is known to have developed
Ebola infection after that long a time.
In Monrovia Wednesday, the mood was mixed among Liberians with
many expressing regrets that yet another Liberian had transported the
virus outside.
Information Minister Lewis Brown, responding to a FrontPageAfrica
inquiry said: "The Liberian Government is concerned and regrets that
an individual travelling from Liberia was diagnosed with Ebola after
arrival in the United States. Currently there are stringent screening
measures in place at the Roberts International Airport which we
believe are preventing the disease from spreading via air travel. We
monitor these screening programs regularly. We understand his tests
at the RIA, like all others who are being permitted to travel including
on the 19th of September, showed he manifested no signs of fever or
symptoms of the virus. As we are also discovering, it was only days
after his arrival in the United States that the disease was manifested.
As such, consistent with the fndings of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), we are led to believe that he posed no
risks to other passengers or the crew with whom he traveled. We also
have every faith that the United States authorities will successfully
contain this latest case so it remains an isolated incident."
Brown said what the incident demonstrates is the clear international
dimension of this Ebola crisis to which many have eloquently spoken
and for which the resources of the world is being mobilized to avert.
"For months now, the Liberian Government has been stressing that this
disease is not simply a Liberian or West African problem. The entire
international community has a stake in defeating Ebola. Together, we
will win the fght against the deadly Ebola Virus Disease."
Liberians in Texas Monitoring Situation
Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Association
of Dallas-Fort Worth, said in a statement Wednesday that they
leadership is monitoring the situation. As you may be aware, there
has been a confrmed case of an Ebola Patient who arrived in Dallas
on September 20, 2014 from Liberia. The Leadership of The Liberian
Community Association of Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex (LCA-
DFW) wishes to let the residents of the DFW metro know that we
have been deeply monitoring events since yesterday when the CDC
confrmed the Ebola case."
Gaye said the Leadership of the Community had an emergency meeting
Tuesday night to strategize on the way forward. "We will continue to
closely monitor the events as they unfold and we will continuously
inform the community if there is any major development. At this
moment, there is no need to panic as the CDC is taking all necessary
precautions to ensure the situation is under control. Finally, we would
like to call on all Liberians and friends of Liberia to keep the family of
the patient and the Republic of Liberia in your prayers. Let us respect
the privacy of the family.

CDC Offcial In Liberia Says Identifying Contacts Who Came In Touch
With Suspect Key To Investigating First Diagnosed Case On US Soil

reunion with his
girlfriend was cut
short by symptoms of
Ebola. It began shortly after his
arrival in Texas on September 19
leading to what US Centers for
Disease Control offcials say is a
critical condition.
Dr. Tom Kenyon, Director for
the Centers for Disease Control
Center for Global Health who
is visiting Liberia told reporters
Wednesday that as soon as the
case was reported, the CDC
in partnership with Texas
Department of Health team, sent
a seven-person team Tuesday
night to further investigate.
18 Persons Quarantined
Anything we havent picked
up here, weve already sent a
team to the airport to see if we
missed something and so far
were seeing that we havent.
The important part now is (of
course except for caring for the
patient which is the top priority),
is to identify the contacts, that
he had, with whatever exposure
during those few days that he
was symptomatic before being
hospitalized and follow those
individuals for 21 days.
Dr. Kenyon said this is why the
CDC is confdent that this will
not turn into an outbreak in the
United States. We have strong
public health systems. We have
people that are now interviewing
him, fnding out where he was,
who he was around, what was
the nature of the exposure?
Those contacts can be contacted
and monitored for a 21-day
period, watching for fever or any
signs and symptoms. We have at
least two quarantine people that I
met with last night. We probably
have more, but at least two that
went out today; I havent heard
their full report yet. There were
no signs of any disease when
the gentleman boarded the
fight here; no fever, signs and
symptoms of reported exposure.
Were working with all the
airports in the region to make
sure that air travel is safe.
FrontPageAfrica has now
learned that at least 18 persons
are being quarantined who may
have made contact with Duncan,
those include some school-age
children, his girlfriend, Lewis
Troh(Helena) and a few friends.
But despite the CDC assurances,
questions are now being asked
about the role the Presbyterian
Hospital played in spotting the
case from the get go.
Duncan was reportedly asked
by a nurse about his travel
history while in an emergency
room, and volunteered that
he had traveled to Africa but
did not offer any other details,
according to Dr. Mark Lester,
executive vice president of Texas
Health Resources, in a CNN
interview Wednesday. But
that information was not "fully
communicated" to the medical
team, Dr. Lester was quoted as
saying.
Duncan arrived at the Dallas
emergency room on September
26 and Although his symptoms
could have indicated Ebola,
among other diseases, no one
at the hospital asked him if
he had recently traveled to
countries where the virus is
present, a source close to the
case told CNN. The man, who
had just fown from Liberia to
the United States, didn't offer
the information either, the source
said, and he then left the hospital.
A spokesman for Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital says it's
investigating whether the patient
was questioned about his travels.
Duncan Help Transport Family
Friend hit by Ebola
The New York Times reported
Wednesday that Duncan last
month assisted a friend, Sonny
Boy Williams, 21, carry a woman
stricken by Ebola to and from
hospital. The woman identifed
by the Times as Marthalene
Williams, 19, died the next day
after she was admitted.
The Times report quoting
neighbors said, Duncan had
direct contact with the woman
stricken by Ebola on Sept. 15,
just four days before he left
Liberia for the United States.
The family of Marthalene
Williams, took her by taxi to a
hospital with Mr. Duncans help
on Sept. 15 after failing to get
an ambulance, according to her
parents, Emmanuel and Amie
Williams, quoted by the Times.
The woman was reportedly
convulsing and seven months
pregnant and turned away from
hospital for lack of space in its
Ebola treatment ward. The
family said it took Ms. Williams
back home in the evening, and
that she died hours later, around
3 a.m. Mr. Duncan, who was a
family friend and also a tenant in
a house owned by the Williams
family, rode in the taxi in the
front passenger seat while Ms.
Williams, her father and her
brother, Sonny Boy, shared the
back seat, her parents said. Mr.
Duncan then helped carry Ms.
Williams, who was no longer
able to walk, back to the family
home that evening, neighbors
said, according to the Times.
Duncan reportedly returned on
September 28, to the hospital,
where it was determined he likely
had Ebola and was isolated. He
tested positive for the Tuesday,
health offcials said.
The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, which has helped
lead the international response to
Ebola, advises that all medical
facilities should ask patients with
symptoms consistent with Ebola
for their travel history.
Further infections cannot be
ruled out, according to U.S.
offcials because people who
have Ebola are contagious --
but only through contact with
infected bodily fuids -- when
they display active symptoms of
the virus, such as a high fever,
severe headache, diarrhea and
vomiting, among others. It's not
like a cold or the fu, which can
be spread before symptoms show
up, and it doesn't spread through
the air.
US offcials say Duncan arrival
from Liberia should have been
a huge red fag, if he was asked
about his travels. Liberia is
one of the hotspots in a large
outbreak of Ebola in West
Africa, with 3,458 cases and
1,830 deaths as of September 23,
according to the World Health
Organization. Other countries
affected include Guinea, Nigeria
and Sierra Leone. In total, more
than 3,000 people have died in
those countries from Ebola, and
more than 6,500 have contracted
the disease.
Two American missionaries
who were working in Liberia
contracted the virus and were
brought back to the United
States, where they were treated
with the experimental drug
ZMapp. Another American
doctor working with the same
charity was also infected in
Liberia and brought home for
treatement. They all have since
recovered from the virus and
were released from care.
The CDC has ramped up a
national effort to stem the spread
of Ebola, and in September
President Barack Obama spoke
at CDC headquarters in Atlanta.
He called the virus a global
health and security threat, and
pledged U.S. assistance to the
affected countries to try to stem
the tide of the disease.
The patient in Dallas is now
under intensive care and isolated
at Texas Health Presbyterian
Hospital, said CDC Director Dr.
Thomas Frieden. He is in serious
condition, the hospital told CNN
Wednesday.
The man few from Liberia and
arrived in Dallas to visit family
on September 20, Frieden
explained. He started feeling ill
around September 24 and sought
medical care on September 26,
he added.
CNN Chief Medical
Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta
asked Frieden Wednesday on
"New Day" if the man should
have been tested for Ebola on his
frst visit to the hospital, and if he
should have been asked about his
recent travel history.
"That's one of the things we'll be
looking at," Frieden said. "But
we're reiterating the message
for every health worker in this
country -- think about travel
history. If someone's been in
West Africa within 21 days and
they've got a fever, immediately
isolate them and get them tested
for Ebola."
Gupta then asked Frieden to
explain guidance the CDC has
issued on that and again asked:
"Should this person have been
tested?"

"We weren't there so I can't tell
you exactly what that person
said..." Frieden responded.
Gupta interjected, "You're
advising public health
departments. Last time I was
here (at the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention in
Atlanta) there was a call with
many primary care doctors to
educate them on this exact issue.
That was a couple of months
ago. Should this person have
been tested?"
Frieden answered, "We know that
in busy emergency departments
all over the country, people may
not ask travel histories. I don't
know if that was done here. But
we need to make sure that it is
done going forward."
Health experts are monitoring
"a handful" of people who were
potentially exposed to Ebola
through physical contact with the
frst patient diagnosed with the
deadly virus in the United States,
the top U.S. public health offcial
said on Wednesday.
Texas health offcials said
healthcare workers have tested
negative for the virus and there
are no other suspected cases in
the state. The healthcare workers
will be closely monitored for the
next 21 days, the time it can take
for symptoms of the hemorrhagic
fever to appear. "We have a
seven-person team in Dallas
today helping to review that
with the family and make sure
we identify everyone that could
have had contact with him," Dr.
Thomas Frieden, director of the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), said in
an interview with NBC TV's
"Today" show.
Offcials were looking at family
members the patient visited and
healthcare providers who helped
treat him, which amounted to "a
handful" of people, according to
Frieden.
The patient was in serious
condition, a Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital
spokeswoman said on
Wednesday. The man was
admitted on Sunday, and the
hospital did not describe his
condition at the time of Tuesday's
announcement that he had Ebola.
Stanley A. Gaye, President, head

EBOLA A HELPFUL GUIDE FOR LIBERIA

Commentary
EDITORIAL
THE DECISION by Kenya and the Ivory Coast to ease travel
to countries hit by the deadly Ebola Virus is a great frst step to
erasing travel worries for passengers unable to book fights to
neighboring West African states.
THE FEW who can afford have been coughing up US$2,000
on SN Brussels and Royal Air Maroc, the only two airlines still
fying out of Liberia.
FOR ALL THE RIGHT reasons, countries which took steps to
protect their citizens acted out of fear and the unknown when
they decided to slash fights to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone,
regional neighbors hit hard by the outbreak.
IT DID NOT HELP matters that Patrick Sawyer, a 40-year-old
consultant with the Ministry of Finance, who was en route to a
conference, collapsed upon arrival in Lagos, Nigeria.
SAWYER, WHO HAD previously lost his sister to the virus, had
displayed symptoms of Ebola during travel and arrived in Lagos
on July 20, where he was immediately quarantined. He died fve
days later, and preliminary lab results say he tested positive for
Ebola.
THE SAWYER WAS CASE was the frst for an air traveler and
immediately raised questions as to why Liberia authorities did not
do more to prevent him from boarding a fight to another country.
IT WAS LATER gathered that Sawyer denied to Nigerian doctors
that he had come in contact with anyone who had the deadly virus.
WHAT FOLLOWED LATER was a series of airline cancellations.
Out of the 590 monthly fights scheduled to Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone, 216 were cancelled, according to OAG, an airline
data provider. Although 14 cases of Ebola have been reported in
Nigeria, fights to and from the country have not been affected.
Liberia has been hit greatly by the cancellations. Air Cte DIvoire,
Nigerias Arik Air, Togos ASKY Airlines, British Airways,
Emirates Airlines and Kenya Airways have together cancelled a
combined 76 scheduled fights to Guinea, 70 to Liberia and 70
to Sierra Leone. Air France had previously cancelled fights to
Liberia before the outbreak hit its peak.
THIS IS WHY we welcome the decision by the Ivory Coast
president Alassane Ouattara who declared last Friday that
his country will lift the controversial suspension of fights to
countries stricken by the Ebola virus to show solidarity with the
nations affected by the lethal outbreak. Outtara said the initial
decision to suspend fights was prompted by uncertainty about
the threat, which he called a terrible problem for the people of
west Africa. When Ebola frst broke out, people got panicked,
he said. Obviously we rushed to make certain decisions. Now
that everything is under control there is no case of Ebola in Cote
dIvoire (Ivory Coast) I have decided that next week we will lift
the suspension of fights and the maritime suspension.
IVORY COAST IS ALSO opening a humanitarian corridor
so that people who want to enter Ivory Coast can be checked.
The country has also contributed $1m to the international anti-
Ebola effort. Ouattara, who addressed the United Nations general
assembly on Friday, said initial concerns were prompted by
Ivory Coasts shared borders with two countries Guinea and
Liberia hit by Ebola. I think we are the only country that has
two Ebola countries to its borders and we have to really work on
its prevention and we are very grateful to President Obama the
centres for disease dontrol has sent two experts to work on this
control, he said. We are trying to work on specifc measures to
contain and to prevent.
WE HOPE THAT OTHER African brothers and sisters will
see the need now to resume fights to countries hit hard by the
outbreak.

EASING
THE EBOLA
TRAVEL
FEARS
O
ver the recent months, Liberia has been in a state of
confusion as it relates to Ebola. At this point the damages
are evident, hence, a good guideline to help stir the nation
in the right direction is eminent. Its imperative that experts
understand the mental effect and state of mind of the citizenry involve,
in order to provide adequate help.
Psychological dimension:
The frst step is the mental perception and acceptance of this plague.
For many Liberians, this is like the stages of grieving that according to
psychologist are experienced by people from all work of Life. Death
in itself forces people to self-evaluate, create fear and panic. These are
the fve stages of grieving, which unfortunately does not happen in a
specifc order and differing for each individual.
1. Denial and isolation- in the minds of many Liberian this cant be
real, its a conspiracy or witchcraft. It cant happen to a Liberian only
our neighbors, this is where the government has to focus on awareness
and present the real facts and realistic statistic to the nation. No sugar
coating the fact, the sooner people realize the truth the quicker it can be
accepted and worked upon. The various media outlets in Liberia must
have detail pictorial and video of the last and horrible stages of Ebola,
Liberians have to see to believe. These video images must be ran daily
until people begin to accept.
2. Anger- The nations should expect a lot of anger, citizens are mad
because their love ones are dying and they feel helpless. Needless to
say the government and any close relatives will feel the wrath of this
anger.
Solution- Limit errors and communicate openly, dont be a nation that
is too big to say sorry publicly. No one is Liberia is an expert therefore
the right people and experts must be put in the right place immediately.
This is not the time for trial and error, recognition or fame, Ebola runs
like a wild fre if not contain will continued to viciously spread.
3. Bargaining- This is when the nation and its citizenry will try to ask
for help, some may even threatening the government that if they dont
do certain things they will in turn do X,y,z etc. Hence can be seen by
health care workers abandoning their post, and /or citizen rioting.
Suggested Solution:
Have a medium for people to expressed themselves and reveal the
actual death of their love ones without any harsh re-course. Provide
for health care workers the right PPE and a better compensatory
salary structure to help mitigate the risk. In modern countries people
are highly compensated to work in hazardous and hostile working
environment. This has to be a win-win situation for the nation and
health care workers.
4. Depression- For many years to come Liberians will be sad, depressed
and probably angry, and would blame themselves and the nation .this is
normal with time, appropriate actions, counseling, it will be lessened.
Suggested solution- The government of Liberia must have expert
psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers throughout the counties
who will be able to properly counsel the citizen of Liberia about the
disease, what is being done to improve the situation, dealing with
loss of loved ones, life as we know it and how to handle any future
plagues. Non-essential medical personnel who dont understand the
human behavior must refrain from interfering in this process to prevent
confusion and un-resolve issues that could later cause mental break-
down and affect the stability of our nation as exhibited by the irrational
behaviors of some recently in West Point (New Kru Town).
5. Acceptance- When the Liberian citizens have learned to trust the
process put in place by the medical experts, international aid workers
and evidence of signifcant decreasing rates of infections, deaths and
probable eradication. In addition the stability and return to normal daily
activities. Most especially when the nation is seen as working as a team
at a national level. Suggested solution: Prove to the citizens of Liberia
that the nation care by implementing the right medical protocol and
utilizing all resources allotted for this particular plague. The integrity
of the government and international bodies will be greatly scrutinized,
hence, it is imperative that transparency at all level of the process must
be revealed to the world at large daily or weekly. A progress chart must
be distributed weekly to the nation and the world at large about methods
implemented and its results. People in authority will have to learn to
be more empathetic, sympathetic and considerate through their action,
thoughts and utterances. This is not the time for defensive behavior but
unity and actions leading to resolution of the crisis. These behaviors
greatly enhances and embrace acceptance.
Actions:
After reviewing various literature about Ebola in other countries and
steps taken to eradicate, the most challenge I foresee in our nation is
the high literacy rate seen in Liberia. The social media and materials
must be tailored at a 3 grade reading levels or lower for people to
understand. Health Care workers in each county must have an Ebola
information center to explain the disease in the local vernaculars, for
increased understanding. The Local radios must disseminate info daily
from health care offcials in various Upon residing and working in
Liberia in various healthcare and non- healthcare positions for over
4 plus years, its obvious that our health care practices and universal
precautions techniques are poor, as evidence by major heads of our
health care system and workers falling victims of this disease. Experts
should be employed in various health care institution throughout the
country to teach, enforce and monitor the right standard practice to
prevent further health care workers demise. Liberia has a vast amount
of land spaces on the Robert feld highway and other areas that are
isolated and far away from the public. This also applies to various areas
in the various counties to prevent transport and further contaminations
from the sick and dead. This is where the crucial keys containment and
isolation comes into play. I would suggest that the nation set-up a tent
city in those areas away from the main capital to treat Ebola victims,
hence, the vast majority of the public is not expose and people can
discreetly dropped off their love ones for treatment without stigma and
dead bodies without fear, not
too many people would be watching these isolated facilities and people
privacy can be protected. Law enforcement help would be needed to
protect health care workers and families complying with these efforts.
Therefore, after this plague is over the nation can burn these tent and
prevent reinfection compare to using buildings that may not be properly
decontaminated due to our poor health care standards, hence, may
lead to re-infection. Every district must have a representative that the
people can trust and their confdentiality are sealed to have a successful
reporting process/ medium that can be channel to the right agency.
All government and non-government agency must play a specifc and
active role in this process for the nation to fght collectively. There
should not be an overlaps of role or too many cooks in the same kitchen
this can lead to mis-trust. A weekly report about objectives and goals
assigned to each agency must be channel to the Executive Branch for
accountability and performance. All agencies members not meeting the
national objectives must be terminated, it cant be business as usual as
Ebola waits for no one, and will make the nation pay for every mistake
and lack of deliverables.
Future guidelines:
1. Liberia must employ competent and experience health care worker
from all over the world, specifcally Liberian to help rebuild and train
fellow health care workers in the country. The training and practices are
old, outdated and not adhere to.
2. Every Liberian hospital must be mandated to conduct mandatory
continuous training sections every three months for all health care
employee to ensure property standards and training and inspectors
verify.
3. Liberia must form a private organization comprising of competent
health care professionals who shall audit and grade every health care
organization through-out the nation and post public grade sheets, to
include infection rate, death toll etc. every three months as seen in
modern hospital. This will lead to prevention, instead of cure which
can be costly for a nation.
4. Liberian healthcare professionals must be held accountable for
malpractice moving forwards
5. Health Care colleges must be held at the highest standard, the
Ministry of Education must begin to validate the curriculum and
standard in these institutions as human lives are involve.
6. Liberia needs to attract competent and highly qualify health care
professional to create standard and better awareness for future events.
7. All other infectious disease to include Ebola must be added in the
medical curriculum moving forward.
8. The counties health care programs must be strength to provide care in
the rural area, hence, not transferring contagious cases to the city. This
will aid isolation and prevent the spread as seen in Lofa to Monrovia.
9. The entire nation must get weekly or monthly update of what the
nation will be doing and have done to improve the health sector Liberia.
10. One caution is, no matter how much money anyone has in Liberia,
critical illnesses happens in the middle of the night, no plane gets into
Monrovia at night or right away even during the day time it takes
hours, every citizen must have to rely on the local health care team to
stabilized him or her, if they are incompetent and left to be incompetent
the nation will perish from preventable and treatable illnesses.
11. Our health care system needs revamping and new technology.
Liberia will face another medical crisis MAMA Liberia must be
ready to save it citizens. Cheap is expensive which is why Liberia is
now spending millions instead of thousand had the right health care
systems being implemented over the years.
12. To our new counterparts the US Military, Liberia says a hearty
welcome please incorporate the help of experience Liberians on your
team who understand the nature, mind-set and lay of the land they can
be of great access to make your effort successful.
Remember Liberians: THIS IS NOT THE DISEASE OF THE POOR
OR DIRTY IT IS FOR ALL CLASSES. ARROGANCE AND EGO
WILL LEAD TO MORE DEATH. THE REALITY IS EBOLA LIVES
NEXT TO EVERYONE IN LIBERIAN NO EXCEPETION!!!!

Ngafuan, I see no truth in your entire speech. That's a complete dried dog
story. Ebola just broke up few months ago. The virus should not be used as
an excuse for your failure . I am quite sure the UN members just laughed at
you for delivering such an abstract report . What better have the government
done after 10 years when Liberians are still living in extreme poorvity .
Let people hear their ears yah, you all have failed Liberia and the Liberian
people . Anybody reading your speech will see corruption in it for sure .
EWORYONWON HARRIS UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA
Did I hear the Accountant saying that gains reversed........which gain if I
may ask? before Ebola president Sirleaf stated that the education system in
Liberia is a mess which implies that it was non existence, the health care
system was non-existent indicative of the fact the ordinary masses were
dying from curable disease while the minister and his family and other
offcials got medical services outside Liberia. Before Ebola there was no
electricity while the minister used government fuel and generator. I can go
on and on and names that there were no reversal of gains but the deplorable
living condition of the people have grown to horrible and acceptable level.
ministers make up to 20k while the few masses that are working make atleast
90.00 but again I and so many will not be surprise if such bold face lie from
a uncompassionate minister and his boss that have no interest in the Liberian
people welfare but to line their pocket.
EDWARD ROYE TOP COMMENTER LIBERIA COLLEGE
Minister, you didn't mention the way forward for the Liberia. the people
u r talking know more about Liberia and the Ebola situation than what u
tried to tell them. we expected to present a blueprint of the way forward
from the Ebola situation. You mentioned nothing about capacitating the
manpower(health) problem. please, lets avoid making people to feel sorry
for us when we can do something about ourselves. Guinea has Ebola amidst
this Ebola crisis, it held investment conference with the Moroccans, air
France continues to fy there and guinea is still attracting other investors to
her country. Why should it be Liberia to tell the world of how bad situation
has become. that we should be begging and telling the people to feel sorry
for us. lets cross this bridge, mehn and stop the crying baby thing. the UN
awaits to receive practical recommendation for the way out of this crisis, do
not try to impress or lecture them
IBRAHIM W. VARMAH STELLA MARIS POLYTECHNIC
Edward, is it the Minister that is making "people to feel sorry for us"? What
will say when US President Obama, UN Secretary General and even the
WHO Director said similar things and continue to say it? Mr. Roye, are
you aware that Liberia is the only hardest hit country whose capital is an
epicenter which is the frst national capital city to ever be hit by an Ebola
outbreak? Air France still goes to Guinea cuz Conakry is not hit ; besides
what will you say of Air Ivoire and Kenya Airways' promise to return?
PLEEBOCOLLINS25 (SIGNED IN USING YAHOO)
Ibrahim W. Varmah yes, Liberia has become the poster child for the Ebola
because of the government negligence. Offcials fying out of the country for
cut on their fnger. Guinea is hit but the word here is competence and ability.
All these cashiers from the US and the ones who cannot read a page trying to
impress us with what they know. What gains is he talking about? The river
toilet in Soniwen or the Western Union line that Liberians need before they
can eat? Everyone of them have failed and now they standing in front of the
Un crying and begging. Our offcials have no dignity.
MAMADEE KAMARA MONROVIA, LIBERIA
Perhaps some people have ears that they don't use to hear. Speaking of
way forward, the Minister said Liberia and other affected countries have
one option and that option is to fght Ebola with all of the resources they
can muster. SN Brussels still comes to Liberia in case you didn't know. Air
Moroc and other airliners will come as well. For some of you doomsayers
and defeatists , what you wish for Liberia is the worst but you are dead
wrong because Liberia will rise and shine in spite of the current Ebola crisis.
The Minister did not deceive the world yesterday, he put it correctly; our
people are dying and we still need more help. Did you want him to say that
we are building rooms in the skies or would you have preferred him lie like
some of you would do at whatever little chance you get? I do not need any
personal favors from Ngafuan but I respect the man because of his love for
his people and will avail myself to defend him when ignoramuses and sheer
non entities who can hardly peep beyond their noses, venture out to impugn
his hard earned reputation.
CLARK DENNIS PACKAGING CLERK AT INTERSTATE BATTERIES
Looking for excuses. What signifcant impact the government made prior to
the Ebola outbreak? The few nurses we had before the Ebola outbreak were
already complaining of less pay why you guys greedy siphon the country
resources, teachers were complaining of unpaid arrears and salaries, price
basic commodities were let loose, the US rate was skyrocketing, economic
crisis was on the increase, there was no electricity, safe drinking water,
unparalleled civil servants income, poor education system, infation, etc. Our
country will survive of this disease but let it not be used as excuse for this
useless government failure
NGAFUAN: LIBERIAS
GAINS PERHAPS ALREADY
REVERSED DUE TO EBOLA
The Editor,
I
am persuaded to write this piece as to why Liberians need a
patriotic and committed leader more than ever before at this
point in our history, especially with a majority of Liberians
facing the thunderstorm of poverty. With no doubts, I am
of the frm conviction that Mr. Benoni Urey can transform and
shape the destiny of our people and beloved country, Liberia.
Our quest for a leader will vigorously promote a government of
transparency and accountability that has not yet been realized,
and with Mr. Urey expressing his interest to spearhead the
executive branch of government in 2017, I have come to the
conclusion that our quest will be realized and Liberia will
rise once again under Benoni Ureys leadership. We need not
be reminded that Liberia is a rich country in valuable mineral
resources including: diamonds and gold, with over a million tons
of iron ore still untouched, growing the worlds largest rubber
plantation, tourism potential for sustainable growth,47 percent
of West Africas heavy rainforest, gigantic arable land for
agriculture to make the country self-suffcient in producing its
own stable food such as rice, quality timber to produce lumber
in our construction industry, furniture and paper for export and
hydroelectric potential with 13 rivers in the country to electrify
every village, town and city. Disappointingly, with all the
abundance of natural resources, the majority of our people still
fnd themselves in abject poverty.
Liberia is only 43,000 square miles in size with about 3.2 million
inhabitants. Yet 80% of our people live below the poverty line,
surviving on less than $1.25 United States dollars a day. Sadly for
all of us, since the multiparty system was introduced in Liberia,
the formation of political parties has surfaced with elected
representatives from among the poor people whom we believed
understood the condition of the poverty-stricken individuals they
were elected to represent. Notwithstanding, the condition of the
poor people continues to worsen.
It is a reality in Liberia that poor and inexperienced political
leaders have turned out to be corrupt, and it is one of the
most serious problems that has afficted Liberia since the
establishment of the multiparty system. Liberians then believed
that a multiparty system would allow them to elect honest
politicians to represent their interest. Since 1985, Liberia has
had many Heads of State, with virtually different teams of
political leaders, but each administration has been marred by
uncontrollable corruption, the abuse of the public offce and
offcial incompetence. Political leaders of yesterday and today
have failed to improve the conditions of our people, but they
take interest in accumulating wealth at the detriment of the poor
people that they were elected to represent.
Sons and daughters of Liberia, as we approach these defning three
years, we must make a decision in supporting a candidate for the
presidency of Liberia, and let me remind us of Benoni Urey, who
has come forward undoubtedly to lead our nation into prosperity
and transform the lives of the suffering masses, while translating
his vision into results. In spite of his wealth, he maintained his
humble attitude to engage with ordinary Liberians. Against this
backdrop, we should have many reasons to be proud of Benoni
Urey because of his many accomplishments and the goodwill he
continues to exhibit over the years to impact the lives of many
poor people. It isa fact that he owns the fourth largest rubber
plantation and the largest poultry farm in the country. In addition,
he has a mobile phone company, LoneStar Cell, and it is now a
multinational MTN in Liberia. Mr. Urey also owns a real estate
business, a car rental company, TV station, newspaper, two FM
radio stations with a little over 1,600 fulltime employees and
thousands more on a contractual basis. From all indication, Urey
is a man who has a deep sense of purpose and is true to his core
values.
As a devoted Christian, he lives in accordance with his biblical
principle from Proverbs 3:27: Do not withhold good from those
to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. With this
in mind, over 100 Liberian students are benefting from Ureys
personal scholarship scheme. Moreover, he provides scholarship
for the best academic students in agriculture and economics at
Cuttington University College, from where he graduated. Being
a philanthropist, he gives to individuals, churches, hospitals,
mosques, schools, colleges, universities and other social groups.
In the Liberian constitution, it says All power is inherent in
the people. All free governments are instituted by their authority
and for their beneft and they have the right to alter and reform
the same when their safety and happiness so require. In order to
ensure a democratic government which responds to the wishes
of the governed, the people shall have the right at such period,
and in such manner as provided for under this Constitution, to
cause their public servants to leave offce and to fll vacancies by
regular elections and appointments.
Since power is inherent in we the people, let us make no
mistake in working for our general interest at this critical time in
the history of our country. With Mr. Urey as the next president,
peace, security, democracy, good governance, human rights and
sound economic management can be achieved for sustainable
growth and development. It was no surprise for Mr. Urey to openly
express his disagreement with this current government against
the sale of remaining oil blocks. Moreover, with the outbreak
of the deadly Ebola virus, it was Mr. Urey who appealed to the
Ellen Johnson Sirleafs Administration to immediately declare a
state of emergency to help contain the spread of the disease that
has already killed around 1,600 of our citizens, but sadly, his
appeal was initially ignored by those in authority. Based on his
vision and conviction expressed in recent times, we can put our
trust and hope in his leadership to lift our people out of poverty
and take the nation to greater heights. Nevertheless, with his
leadership, I hold the belief that Urey will create a conducive
environment and atmosphere for Liberian lecturers, engineers,
doctors, nurses, professors, writers, entrepreneurs, politicians,
lawyers, social workers, trained teachers and others in the
Diaspora to return home and make meaningful contributions
toward Liberia as a better country for all.

from the Liberia Anti

that it is investigating a
case including the payment of
US$25,000 by the National Oil
Company of Liberia, followed
by a statement from the offce of
one of the individuals involved,
Lawmaker Adolph Lawrence,
explaining his side of the story,
the credibility of the Speaker of
the House of Representatives,
Alex Tyler seems to now be a
subject of scrutiny over his role
in the entire saga.
Speaker Tyler has said he is
not commenting further on the
matter because it is being probed
by the LACC but Eugene R.
Ricks, Administrative Assistant
in the offce of Representative
Lawrence in a statement
narrating the incident disclosed
that lawmaker Lawrence was
sent to the bank to take delivery
of US$12,500 belonging to
speaker Tyler before he was
invited by agents of the LACC
for questioning.
Stated the release from
Representative Lawrences offce
The Liberian Petroleum lawyer
entered into a contract with
the House of Representatives
to provide consultancy on
the discussion surrounding
the two (2) draft bills. The
consultancy was agreed at a cost
of US$25,000.00 and that an
upfront of 50% is to be paid to
commence the consultancy. The
House of Representatives asked
NOCAL to fnance the cost of
consultancy, but NOCAL was
not in the position at the time.
Hence, taking into consideration
that the consultancy was very
important and the nationwide
consultation on the two (2) bills
was about to kick-off, the Speaker
of the House of Representatives,
Hon. Alex J. Tyler informed
NOCAL that he will pay the
consultant the upfront of 50%
which will be US$12,500.00.
It was agreed upon by the
Speaker and the Consultant that
when NOCAL fnally pays the
US$25000.00, the Speakers
money will be reimbursed by
the consultant. Thus, a cash
amount of US$12,500.00 was
paid by the Speaker to Cllr.
Nkrumah Michael Allison. It
must be noted that NOCAL
was informed by the Speaker
of the House of Representatives
regarding the upfront payment to
the consultant.
The clarifcation by the offce
of Representative Lawrence has
further created more suspicions
regarding the saga especially the
involvement of Speaker Tyler in
allegedly paying an amount of
US$12,500 to Attorney Allison
when the Legislature had an
amount of US$900,000 for the
nationwide consultation on the
two draft bills - the National Oil
Company of Liberia (NOCAL)
Act 2013 and Petroleum
(Exploration and Production)
Act 2013.
More importantly, questions are
being asked about NOCAL and
what role it played in approving
the US$900,00 for the round
table and the recent payments to
the lawyers hired to review the
new petroleum draft.
PFM Laws breached?

As head of the Legislative
branch of government that
makes laws, the payment of
US$12,500 allegedly by the
Speaker from his pocket to
fnance a national service is a
violation of the Public Financial
management Law (PFM) of
Liberia, 2009, a law that was

approved by the Legislature. The
PFM law prohibits use of offcial
cash for personal use and vice
versa as the law strictly provide
for accountability for public

by vouchers, receipts and other
fnancial documents.
The PFM Act of 2009
Regulations, B 36. Private Use
of Cash Prohibited states (1)
Offcial cash shall not be used
for any private purpose including
the encashment of checks,
including private checks. (2)
The application of offcial cash
for any purpose other than those
provided for in these regulations
or the accounting manual of the
Government agency is a breach
of fnancial discipline as defned
in sub regulation A.20(1).
The consultation on the two
draft bills was a national event
and the Speaker supposedly
using his private money to pay
a lawyer to later get reimbursed
is a transaction not backed by
vouchers in contravention of
further provisions of the PFM
law which provides that all
payments of public money to be
backed by vouchers and receipts.
The PFM law provides in P.9
Payment Vouchers that (1)
All disbursements or payments
of public moneys shall be
properly supported by pre-
numbered payment vouchers. (2)
Payments except for statutory
transfers and debt service shall
be supported by invoices, bills
and other documents in addition
to the payment vouchers. (3)
All payment vouchers shall be
typewritten or made out in ink or
ball point pen and shall contain
or have attached particulars of
the services, goods or works
procured including dates,
numbers, rates so that they can
be checked without references to
any other document.
There are strong indications that
Speaker Tyler might not have
raised voucher before making
the initial 50% payment of
US$12,500 to Attorney Allison
as stated in the statement from
the offce of Representative
Lawrence, as the speaker is not a
fnancial offcer at the Legislature
to raise voucher and issue receipt
for fnancial transactions.
Representative Lawrences offce
further stated On September
24, 2014, Hon. Adolph A.
Lawrence accompanied the
Petroleum Lawyer upon
instruction by the Speaker of the
House of Representatives. At the
Ecobank on Ashmun Street, Cllr.
Allison encashed the check and
gave the Speakers amount of
US$12,500.00 to Hon. Adolph
A. Lawrence. At this juncture,
personnel of LACC appeared
on the same and asked Hon.
Adolph A. Lawrence and Cllr.
Nkrumah Michael Allison to
escort them to the Offce of the
LACC. They did. The amount
of US$22,500.00 is now in the
possession of LACC that is
conducting its investigation. The
District 15 Lawmaker respects
the investigation of the LACC
and awaits its outcome. All I can
say to those rendering people
guilty before investigation, you
are satisfying your sentiments.
Although the LACC investigation
is yet to be concluded but the
explanation that Speaker Tyler
had mandated Representative
Lawrence to accompany the
lawyer to the bank to receive
his (Tyler) reimbursement raises
further doubts on the legality of
the transactions.
With a purported contract signed
between Attorney Allison and
the Legislature as stated by
Representative Lawrences
offce, the justifcation for
sending Hon. Lawrence to
receive the money from the
bank instead of ensuring that
the lawyer who is bounded by
contract returns the remaining
money is an unanswered
question.
Speaker Tyler has served
as Speaker of the House of
Representatives for more than
six years and during his tenure
as head of the frst branch of
Government, the body has
come under continuous public
criticism of receiving kickbacks
to ratify concession agreements.
Several agreements signed by
the 52nd National Legislature
which Tyler headed failed to live
up to contractual terms based on
the manner and form in which
the agreements were scrutinized
by the body.
Agreements including the one
with Buchanan Renewable
Energy (BRE) which promised
to provide cheap electricity to
some communities in Liberia
using energy generated from
dead rubber chips did not last
long in the country as it rolled up
operations and left.
The 52nd National Legislature
was rocked by bribery allegation
when one of its members
Alominza Ennos signed for fund
from the National Oil Company
of Liberia to be used as lobbying
fees for the ratifcation of oil
reform laws, a case currently
being investigated by the LACC.
In total the National Oil
Company paid US$118,000
to the Legislature in bribery
according to audit conducted
by the Supreme Audit
Institution, the General Auditing
Commission of Liberia with an
offcial of the oil company at the
time Clemenceau Urey admitting
that the money was paid in order
to fast track ratifcation of oil
reform laws.
The current payment of
US$25,000 which has now
reached the LACC is further
indication of the integrity
problem beclouding some
members of the National
legislature with its head now in
the spotlight.

that three soldiers of the
Armed Forces of Liberia have

by the army were said to have
been undergoing treatment at
the ELWA Ebola Treatment Unit

Military sources told FPA that
it all started with the infection
of a female soldier who had
recently returned from vacation
in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.
The soldier reportedly fell ill and
infected a nurse who treated her
at the EBK facility, leading to the
infection of two other soldiers.
Armed Forces of Liberia

the Ministry of Health and

the soldiers. Those soldiers and

According to the latest report

The report notes that it is

Efforts are being made to

six member jury of the Civil Law Court Wednesday
rendered a verdict that ordered the purported Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Elder John
Massey High school in Logan administration and the
Calvary Pentecostal Church cancelled due to fraud.
We the jurors having carefully reviewed the evidence produced in
this trial unanimously agreed to hold the administration of the Elder
John Massey High School liable of fraud and declare the MOU
cancelled said the six-member jury in a verdict.
The verdict on Wednesday which was greeted with dancing and
singing by members of the Calvary Pentecostal Church came as the
result of a petition fled to the Civil Law Court by the current head
of the church, Bishop Benjamin Doe Wion Sr. to have the MOU
cancelled on ground that the signatures on the MOU was forged by
the school administration headed by Ramson George.
According to the court record the purported MOU was signed by the
school administration and the Church for the Logan Town community
to operate the school for a 25 year period while 25% income generated
be given to the done church, the MOU noted
During the course of the trial Bishop Wion had told the court and jury
that there was no MOU signed between the church and the school that
gave the other party a 25 year agreement as the MOU was something
done under the cover of darkness.
The school administrator headed by Ramsom George rebutting the
Bishop Wions claim also told the court and jury that the MOU was
signed on May 27, 2004 following and agreement reached with the
late Philip Teah told gave the school to the Logan Town Community
to operate the school for 25 years with 25% given to the church in
question
According to George when the agreement was reached with the late
Bishop Teah to give the school to the Logan Town Community, the
community wrote proposal to the European Union and UNMIL where
the two groups help to get revamp the school which was originally
match house.
He stated from the improvement of the school the MOU signed
the school went into full operation in 2007 under the basis of the
agreement signed with the late Bishop Teah.
With the claims and counter claims put out by George and the current
Bishop Wion the jurors returning from an hour long deliberation told
the court that from the evidence adduced at the trial it was recognized
that the school administrator had forged the Memorandum of
Understanding to gain control of the school.
However, the presiding judge Emery Paye accepted the Jurors ruling
and promised to rule in the coming days based on notice of assignment
to be made by the court.
In a FrontPageAfrica interview outside of the court shortly after the
verdict, Bishop Wion praised the court and jurors for what he termed
sound decision saying that everything the school administrators had
said were all based on lies.
I was very confdent that the church could win this case as no one
can fght the church said Bishop Wion with dancing and singing in
the background by jubilant members of the church.

S
ince the increase in the
number of Ebola cases
in Montserrado County,
several Liberians
including lawmakers have
been forthcoming with major
donations to help curb further
spread of the virus and also
attend to the sick.
At least one lawmaker,
Representative Saah Joseph is
now referred to as a National
Hero based on the use of two
ambulances belonging to him to
transport sick people to medical
facilities.
Other lawmakers are now
answering the national call
with donations that will help

Representative Munah Pelham

Montserrado County) who has
donated an ambulance to be used
in her district.
During the donation,
Representative Youngblood
called for division of power in
the fght against the spread of the
deadly Ebola virus by allowing
the health workers to take care of
the health issues and politicians
playing their role as politicians.
The lawmaker call, according
to her comes in the wake of the

government to lift the curfew
POLICE NOT DOING MUCH TO PROTECT CITIZENS-
LAWYER FROWNS ON CRIMES DURING CURFEW HOURS
as he said it is not living up to
its true meaning as the means to
fght against the Ebola Virus.
Cllr. Sam Cooper presenting
buckets and some disinfectants
to various magisterial courts in
Montserrado County as a means
fghting against the deadly

comes from the backdrop that
there have been more crimes
committed in Monrovia during
the curfew hours.
He claimed that police who is
tasked with the responsibility to
provide security at night during
curfew hours but frowned that
they are not doing so adding
that the police is not providing

but when the guy returned the
next day the laptops and other
materials went missing without
the police given any account
said Cllr. Cooper.
He said there is no need to
have curfew when people are
found to be killed at night
citing the ELWA junction
death of a man who was found
lying naked just a stone throw

According Cllr. Cooper the
Montserrado Bar Association is
in readiness to help government
by providing legal services
to the government for any
perpetrator of the act that is
brought to court.
Touching on the donation, Cllr.
Cooper said the Ebola fght
is everyones business as this
was why the association had
decided to donate the items to
the court.
Liberia National Bar

that the LNBA and its affliate

She said, District Nine being one
of those districts in Montserrado
that has experienced the worst
cases of Ebola with 49 deaths
and 58 families quarantined
there was a need to take matter
in their own hands. By the help
of God and the hard work of the

better, she added.
The lawmaker continued One

R
elief is on the way for travelers out of Liberia and Sierra Leone looking to book a fight to
neighboring Ghana, Nigeria and other neighboring states.
FrontPageAfrica has learned that the East African airliner, Kenyan Airways is poised to be the
second airline to resume fights to Ebola-stricken Liberia. The airline has penciled in October
24th, 2014 as its tentative date for the resumption of fights to Liberia, Airport Authority sources confrmed
Tuesday.
Addressing the 69th United Nations General Assembly Monday, Foreign Minister Augustine Ngafuan
singled out Kenya and Ivory Coast for relaxing travel restrictions and the announcement of the resumption
of fights to Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Liberia Airport Authority sources confrmed to FrontPageAfrica Tuesday that Kenya has already notifed
airport authorities that it intends to resume fights on the 24th of October. Air Cote DIvoire is expected to
resume within a week.
Minister Ngafuan told the UNGA Monday that the suspension of fights as well as the travel and other
restrictions/sanctions imposed on Liberia and other affected countries, contrary to expert advice from WHO
and others, did not only undermine the humanitarian efforts aimed at quickly containing the disease, but
also aggravated the adverse economic effects of the Ebola crisis. The announcement of contributions and
the airlift of critically needed protective equipment and supplies to Liberia and other affected countries by
many governments, international NGOs, corporations, and philanthropists. The expressions of solidarity
have taken many forms and we are deeply grateful for all of them.
But Minister Ngafuan cautioned that these efforts and those earlier provided by many other governments
and institutions like the African Development Bank (AfDB) should not lead Liberia toward complacency
because the country has not yet achieved the twenty-fold increase in response recommended by the experts
to contain the disease.
Kenya, Airways was among a number of key regional airlines which canceled fights to Ebola-hit nations
at the height of the outbreak. The suspension took effect on Aug. 19, 2014.
Kenya Airways which is a part-owned by Air France-KLM, fies a total of seven times a week to the two
cities through Accra.
Kenya withstood pressure despite the pullout of its peers fying Liberia and Sierra Leone but was forced
to bow to pressure on the advice of the Kenyan Ministry of Health which reported four suspected cases of
Ebola in Kenya had tested negative for the virus. The frst case was a Liberian national, traveling to India
through Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta airport, while the second case was that of a Nigerian national who came
to Kenya on Aug. 8, the ministry said in a statement. A Zimbabwean who works in South Africa and was
traveling to Sierra Leone made up the third case while a second Nigerian national was also admitted in
hospital with Ebola-like symptoms.
Air Cte dIvoire, Nigerias Arik Air, Togos ASKY Airlines, British Airways, Emirates Airlines and
Kenya Airways have together cancelled a combined 76 scheduled fights to Guinea, 70 to Liberia and 70 to
Sierra Leone. To date, only Royal Air Maroc and SN Brussels are fying in and out of Liberia. Passengers
looking to travel to Ghana and other neighboring states have been forced to pay almost US$2,000 one way.
Of 590 monthly fights scheduled to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, 216 were cancelled, according to
OAG, an airline data provider. Although 14 cases of Ebola were reported in Nigeria, fights to and from
the country were not affected. Nigeria declared last week that it is Ebola free.
International stakeholders have cautioned that isolation is an endangerment to relief efforts for West
African countries at the heart of the Ebola outbreak which have been virtually sealed off from the world
amid border closures and empty airports as airline routes were suspended.
Experts at the World Health Organization and other relief agencies have been warning for weeks that the
fight cancellations will hamper the Ebola effort. But the warnings were ignored.
The travel bans and cancellations are unnecessary because the risk of a passenger carrying Ebola is
extremely low, according to the WHO and other experts. Only one such incident has been reported so far.
Last Friday, Ivory Coast president Alassane Ouattara, in his address to the UN General Assembly, said his
country will lift the controversial suspension of fights to countries stricken by the Ebola virus to show
solidarity with the nations affected by the lethal outbreak. Ouattara said the initial decision to suspend
fights was prompted by uncertainty about the threat, which he called a terrible problem for the people of
west Africa. When Ebola frst broke out, people got panicked, he said. Obviously we rushed to make
certain decisions. Now that everything is under control there is no case of Ebola in Cote dIvoire (Ivory
Coast) I have decided that next week we will lift the suspension of fights and the maritime suspension.
Ivory Coast has also opened a humanitarian corridor so that people who want to enter Ivory Coast can
be checked. The country has also contributed $1m to the international anti-Ebola effort.
Outtarra explained that initial concerns were prompted by Ivory Coasts shared borders with two countries
Guinea and Liberia hit by Ebola. I think we are the only country that has two Ebola countries to its
borders and we have to really work on its prevention and we are very grateful to President Obama the
centres for disease dontrol has sent two experts to work on this control, he said. We are trying to work
on specifc measures to contain and to prevent.

Legislature shuts down, Sirleaf orders probe in lawmakers daughter death

Edward Forh from New Kru
Town, one of the communities hit
by the Ebola virus where the frst
case of Ebola in Montserrado
County was reported was
accordingly not admitted at the
John F. Kennedy Hospital after
she was taken there by her father.
According to information, nurses
at JFK were afraid to admit Miss
Forh because she had come from
a risky community and there was
no medical history of her illness
available.
The daughter of the lawmaker
who was believed to be suffering
from Asthma died but since her
death, there has been serious
public attention, a situation
many Liberians are describing
as an act of elitism in the health
care delivery of Liberia.
Isaac Jackson, Deputy Minister
of Information frst announced
that the Government has
mandated an investigation into
the death of Miss Forh.
Stated Jackson Today,
September 29, 2014, while
presiding over the daily Ebola
Press Conference at MICAT, I
described as totally unacceptable
the reported incidence at JFK
that resulted into the death of
Miss Nakita Diah Forh. I also
indicated that President Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf was personally
concerned and disturbed over
the painfully shocking news that
health workers at JFK failed to
attend to Ms. Forh for fear of her
being an Ebola patient.
The Deputy Minister than
announced the investigation
Additionally, l announced that
the issues that resulted into the
death of Miss Forh will be fully
investigated!
Following Deputy Minister
Jacksons pronouncement, on
Tuesday, a regular session day
at the national legislature where
major issues are discussed, the
lawmakers abandoned work,
leaving state function and formed
a convoy of exotic vehicles to
visit their bereaved colleague.
My daughter died like dog
Representative Forh father of
the deceased said test has being
conducted on the corpse of his
daughter and proven that his
daughter did not die from Ebola.
In a statement with his
colleagues from the lower house
Tuesday who abandoned session
and had gone to sympathize with
him he told reporters that his
daughter died a painful death in
his arms and blamed the Liberian
government of which he is part
for the death of his daughter.
Forh said: Despite all effort
by me to tell the nurses that
my daughter is an Asthma
patient and not an Ebola, I was
given no attention as she lied
in the car dying slowly. This is
unacceptable I cant believe that
this happened I saw my daughter
died like dog.
Forh is the Montserrado County
Legislative caucus chair and
Representative of the district 17
that host one of the hot spots of
the Ebola epidemic in Liberia
(New Kru Town). New Kru
Town is where the redemption
hospital is located.
It can be recalled that the
Redemption Hospital is one
of those health centers that
frst reported Ebola incident in
Monrovia that led to the frst
death of a female health worker
who came in contact with
someone affected with the Ebola
virus that had travel from Sierra
Leone through Grand Cape
Mount and Bomi counties.
We are sitting on the mat and
waiting for government to plan
and perform the burial ceremony
for my late daughter because
JFK killed my daughter, Forh
said.
Working to prevent
reoccurrence
During the sympathy visit by
some members of the House
of Representatives at Forh
residence, House speaker
Alex Tyler expressed his
disappointment about the
incident especially the manner
and form the late Nakita died
and promised to work with the
executive to ensure that there
is not a reoccurrence of such
incident.
Representative Forh is famous
for the You Eat-I Eat saga
between him and Montserrado
County former Superintendent
Grace Kpaan who secretly
recorded the lawmaker during a
telephone conversation between
the two where the lawmaker was
heard plotting to share money
intended for development in the
county.
In defense, he frst challenged
the Superintendent to make
the recording public and later
described the recording as
stupid joke but admitted that
the voice in the recording was
his.
Kpaan was later made to
leave the position after it was
unanimously agreed among
legislative caucus members
that they could no longer work
with her as Superintendent, thus
declaring a vote of no confdence
in her leadership.
The response of the lawmakers
and the entire government has
sent shock waves across the
country with ordinary Liberians
describing the level of state
attention over the death of Nakita
as an act of elitism in the health
care delivery system of Liberia.
Do you know how many
people dying in this country
from malaria, typhoid and other
sicknesses because hospitals
are afraid to admit them. For
the legislature to not work on
session day and for the Ministry
of Information to make comment
on one death means, all the bad
things are for the poor Liberians,
it is so bad, Soko Tuillah, a
resident of New Kru Town said
at a local hatai center during
discussion.

government on successfully
curtailing the Ebola crisis
blamed for the deaths of eight
people in Nigeria.
"This is how it should be: swift,
effective and comprehensive
action in defense of citizens," he
said in a television broadcast to
the nation.
But Jonathan's government has
been criticized for not protecting
citizens against an Islamic
uprising that caught world
attention when the insurgents
kidnapped more than 270
schoolgirls in April. Dozens
escaped but none of the 219
missing have been rescued.
The U.S. Centers for Disease
Control said Tuesday that Nigeria
appears to have contained the
Ebola epidemic that has killed
more than 3,000 people, most
in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra
Leone.
No new cases have been reported
in weeks in Nigeria, where
the disease was carried by a
Liberian-American diplomat
who left a hospital in Monrovia,
where he had exhibited Ebola
symptoms, and few to Nigeria.
He infected 20 people in Lagos,
Africa's largest city of 21 million
people, and the oil capital of Port
Harcourt.
Nigerian health workers tracked
894 people who had made
contact with the diplomat and
made some 18,500 face-to-
face visits to monitor for Ebola
symptoms, according to the
CDC.
Jonathan urged vigilance on
Nigerians, as offcials continue
to monitor arrivals at airports,
ports and border posts.
He said his mood remains somber
as he remembers all the souls lost
to a 5-year-old Islamic uprising
and its "crises of nationhood
occasioned by the activities of
terrorist elements who have done
the unimaginable to challenge
our unity as a people."
He made no mention of the
missing schoolgirls, or his
government's failure to rescue
them.
Instead, Jonathan praised soldiers
for "inficting devastating blows
at the heart of terror" in the
uprising centered in the northeast
though suicide and car bombs
have killed hundreds of people
in northern cities and the central
capital, Abuja.
The Ministry of Defense and
witnesses have reported that
punishing bombing raids and
ground attacks have repelled the
insurgents and stopped them just
20 kilometers (12 miles) from
the northeast city of Maiduguri,
the birthplace of the Boko Haram
extremists and headquarters of
the military campaign.
But 12 soldiers were sentenced
to death last month for mutiny,
and dozens are to face a court-
martial this month for alleged
cowardice and refusing to act on
orders to advance.
Jonathan is expected to run
again in Feb. 14 presidential
elections that promise to be the
most competitive since decades
of military dictatorship ended in
1999.
In campaign mode, Jonathan
boasted of advances in
agriculture that have reduced the
nation's food import bill from
$6.9 billion in 2009 to $4.35
billion.
He also touted his privatization
of the power sector though that
has yet to end chronic blackouts
that boost costs for industries
reliant on diesel-powered
generators.
Jonathan looks a strong candidate
despite a coalition opposition
that now has more legislators
than the governing party.

SMALL COUNTRIES STRUGGLE TO BE HEARD AT THE UN
UNITED NATIONS (AP)
H
onduras, terrorized
by drug gangs, railed
against the world
for ignoring the
violence and lack of jobs that
sends thousands of young Central
Americans feeing north to the
United States.
Nepal, a poor landlocked country,
called for bridging the "digital
divide" along with a global code
of conduct to regulate the fow of
information.
These are just a few of the concerns
of small countries whose voices
and pleas at the U.N. General
Assembly's annual ministerial
meeting are almost always
drowned out by the agendas of
the big powers. This year's top
item was the fght against Islamic
extremist groups whose tentacles
have spread from the Mideast
to Europe and Africa. Other hot
topics were combating Ebola and
climate change.
While most of the 191 countries
that spoke touched on these issues,
the concerns of smaller nations
some impacted by global
warming, others by refugees,
many by persistent poverty
rarely made headlines, and were
often delivered in a near empty
assembly hall.
At the conclusion of six long
days of speechmaking Tuesday,
General Assembly President Sam
Kutesa tried to change the focus
from terrorism to achieving U.N.
goals to combat poverty by a
2015 deadline, and setting new
targets for 2030. He also raised the
problem of high unemployment,
especially among the young, and
its destabilizing effects.
By the time he had wrapped up
the ministerial meeting, only a
few dozen diplomats were sitting
in the newly renovated assembly
chamber that seats more than
1,800 people.
Here are a few of the speeches
that went largely unnoticed in the
wider world:
The president of the transitional
government in Central African
Republic said the country hopes
the new U.N. peacekeeping
mission will help restore security
and promote development, and
asked the U.N. Security Council
to re-examine the arms embargo
on the confict-torn country that
was imposed in December, for
a year. Catherine Samba-Panza
said the success of the U.N. force
will hinge on the involvement of
the country's security and defense
forces at its side
Gambia's President Yahya
Jammeh spoke of the plight of
Africans who seek a better life and
the impact of climate change on
development. "While Africa is not
responsible for the pollution and
the factors causing climate change,
it stands to suffer the most," he
said. Jammeh raised what he called
"the very frequent and mysterious
sinking, capsizing" of boats
carrying mainly black African
migrants "looking for greener
pastures in the West only to end up
in body bags on European shores."
He accused unnamed countries
that preach good governance, the
rule of law and respect for human
life to African leaders of staying
quiet "about the very dangerous,
racist and inhuman behavior of
deliberately causing boats carrying
black Africans to sink only to
select a few lucky ones to be
rescued and sent to concentration
camps, called Asylum Seekers
Camps."
Honduras' President Juan
Orlando Hernandez cited a drug
war that his country didn't start
and a dearth of job opportunities
for parents and youth as factors
driving Central American children
and families to fee to the U.S. He
proposed creating "a multinational
force" to fght drug traffcking
cartels. "Today, we talk about
what is happening in other regions
to children, young people, families
displaced by war, violence and
radical extremists," Hernandez
said. "But little is said about the
situation of thousands of families
in the northern triangle of Central
America."
Kyrgyzstan Foreign Minister
Erlan Abdyldaev stressed that
climate change isn't affecting only
island nations and coastal areas.
"Rapidly melting glaciers, rising
temperature, land degradation,
landslides, mudfows and foods
cause signifcant economic
damage and serve as vivid
reminders of mountain ecosystem
vulnerability," he said. "According
to reliable forecasts, in 2025, the
ice cover in Kyrgyzstan would be
reduced by a 40 percent average,
with a one-third reduction of
regional water availability."
Nepal's Prime Minister Sushil
Koirala urged the international
community to address the special
needs of the world's poorest
countries, and to provide fnancial
and other support to promote
development. One way, he said, is
to support wider dissemination of
information technologies. But he
stressed that modern technology
"must not be used to interfere in
other countries' internal affairs"
and urged agreement on global
rules of conduct to regulate the
fow of information.
The United Nations, which will
celebrate its 70th anniversary,
also came under criticism from
many countries for failing to bring
its key organs, especially the
powerful Security Council, into
the 21st century.
"It remains thoroughly dominated
by the few and has marginalized
the overwhelming majority,"
said Eritrea's Foreign Minister
Osman Saleh. "Its institutions and
structures are an anachronism in
the modern world."

RAKITIC: BARCELONA
DEFEAT WAS INEVITABLE
TOTTI: MANCHESTER CITY
TWEET INSPIRED ME TO SCORE
BALOTELLI WORTH THE
RISK, SAYS HESKEY

I
van Rakitic said the "day
was always going to come"
when Barcelona would
lose their unbeaten start to
the campaign following the 3-2
Champions League group stage
defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on
Tuesday.
The Catalans had won six and
drawn one of their frst six games
under new coach Luis Enrique -
and all without conceding a goal.
However, they looked extremely
brittle at the back at the Parc des
Princes, with David Luiz and
Marco Verratti both exposing
Barca's ongoing vulnerability at
set-pieces, before Blaise Matuidi
scored what proved to be the
game's decisive goal after a
brilliant break from the hosts.
Still, while Barca looked like
their old fragile selves in the
French capital, Rakitic insists
they are not going to suddenly
go back to the drawing board
ahead of Saturday's Liga clash
with Rayo Vallecano.
R
oma forward
Francesco Totti has
thanked Manchester
City for giving
him extra motivation to score
against them on Tuesday night.
The veteran became the
oldest player to score in the
Champions League in the tie,
when he cancelled out Sergio
Aguero's opener for Manuel
Pellegrini's side.
And the 38-year-old has now
revealed that a tweet from the
Sky Blues - which pointed out
that he had never scored in
England - inspired him to net in
the fxture.
Citys tweet? It really brought
me luck, Totti told Gazzetta
dello Sport. It was a beautiful
goal and a good performance.
L
iverpool's 20 million
signing of Mario
Balotelli from AC
Milan is a risk worth
taking, according to former
Reds striker Emile Heskey.
The Italy international scored
his frst goal for his new club
against Champions League
group-stage opponents
Ludogorets but is yet to get off
the mark in the Premier League.
Heskey, however, believes
Balotelli has the talent to
succeed at Anfeld despite
his history of disciplinary
problems.

LIVERPOOL: STRELLER STRIKE
SEES OFF RODGERS'S SIDE

T
he 33-year-old
capitalised on slack
marking from a corner
to bundle in the winner
on 52 minutes and dent the Reds'
hopes of reaching the Champions
League knockout stage
Marco Streller's close-range
fnish continued Basel's
impressive recent record against
Premier League opposition
and dealt Liverpool's hopes of
qualifying from Champions
League group stage a serious
blow as they were beaten 1-0.
Streller capitalised on some
slack marking from a corner in
the 52nd minute to bundle in the
only goal of a game which saw
the Reds uninspired in the frst
half and profigate in the second.
Raheem Sterling and Lazar
Markovic both spurned
presentable opportunities as the
Reds pushed forward in search
of an equaliser but Brendan
Rodgers's men now go into
two matches with Real Madrid
level on points with the Swiss
champions.
Liverpool made two changes
to their starting line-up from
Saturday's Premier League
derby draw against Everton,
with Jose Enrique replacing
Alberto Moreno and Philippe
Coutinho coming back in for
Adam Lallana.
Basel went into the match with
problems at the back, with
Marcelo Diaz suspended and
fellow defenders Philipp Degen,
Ivan Ivanov and Walter Samuel
all sidelined through injury.
Paulo Sousa also preferred Breel
Embolo to Derlis Gonzalez up
front, even though the Paraguay
international was on target in
defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Sterling had the ball in the net
in the opening stages but the
fag was correctly up for offside,
while Basel had to make an early
change when Behrang Safari
limped off to be replaced by
Gonzalez.
Liverpool survived a scare
when Gerrard was dispossessed
in front of his own box, while
Gonzalez was twice guilty of
a poor touch when getting the
wrong side of Enrique.

Basel continued to show plenty
of pace on the break, with Simon
Mignolet saving well with his
legs from a Serey Die shot, and
Enrique caused problems when
getting forward for Liverpool but
it remained goalless at the break.
The home fans were appealing for
a penalty when Sterling appeared
to bundle over Gonzalez in the
area at the start of the second
half and then Mignolet had to get
down well to save from Ahmed
Hamoudi on the break.
However, Mignolet could only
palm out a defected header from
the resulting corner and veteran
striker Streller pounced on the
loose ball to score from close
range after 52 minutes.
Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik
only just dealt with a Mario
Balotelli free kick from fully 30
yards out and Sterling was later
put clean through following a
neat build-up, but could not
control the pass.
Rickie Lambert replaced
Markovic as Liverpool went
in search of an equaliser but
Gerrard's late free kick failed to
really test Vaclik and Balotelli
was offside when netting as the
hosts held on.
Basel, who had to play their
last European home match
behind closed doors because of
crowd trouble, could face more
disciplinary action, though, after
referee Jonas Eriksson reported
an object thrown onto the pitch.
ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 JUVENTUS: TURAN
FIRES SPANISH CHAMPIONS TO VICTORY
T
he attacker's second half
goal was enough to give
Diego Simeone's men
all thee points against
the Serie A champions in a close
encounter
Juventus suffered a frst defeat
under Massimiliano Allegri as
a goal from Arda Turan earned
Atletico Madrid a 1-0 home win
on Wednesday.
The Turkey international
converted from close range 15
minutes from time to ensure last
term's beaten Champions League
fnalists claimed their opening
points in this season's competition.
Juve had not conceded a
competitive goal under Allegri,
who was appointed in July, prior
to the Group A clash and that
record looked set to remain intact
as a result of a scrappy affair.
Atleti boast a fearsome recent
home record in Europe - avoiding
defeat at the Vicente Calderon in
last season's competition - and
the two sides cancelled each
other out for much of a fxture
that saw plenty of disruptions and
stoppages due to fouls.
Mario Mandzukic's tame strike 25
minutes in was the only effort on
target during the frst half, while
the in-form Carlos Tevez was
kept quiet by the hosts, who were
without injured captain Gabi.
However, when the sides seemed
on course for a draw, Turan got
on the end of a Juanfran cross to
nudge home the winner and leave
Allegri cutting a frustrated fgure
on the sideline.

Amid a fast-paced opening that
saw possession change hands
regularly, Leonardo Bonucci
picked up a yellow card for
tangling with Mandzukic after a
reckless jump.
Atletico then had half-hearted
penalty appeals turned down
when Mandzukic and Turan felt
Arturo Vidal handled in the area.
The Croatia international stung
the palms of Gianluigi Buffon
from distance after 24 minutes,
in an opening half-hour devoid of
clear-cut chances.
Paul Pogba's curled effort from
outside the area veered wide of
Miguel Angel Moya's left-hand
post as the latter stages of the frst
half became even more scrappy.
With fouls aplenty from both
sides, the game remained
fractured and there was no sign of
a goal prior to the interval.
Juventus dominated the opening
exchanges after the break but, as
in the frst half, failed to cause
Atletico too many problems.
Another Turan delivery led to
shouts for a penalty as it defected
off Stephan Lichtsteiner and
struck Martin Caceres on the arm
- although referee Felix Brych
remained unmoved.
However, Turan was to come up
with the goods for Simeone as he
timed his run into the area to get
on the end of Juanfran's cross after
Mandzukic had failed to connect
with Juanfran's delivery.

ARSENAL THRASH GALATASARAY
T
he 16 million man sped
past a shoddy Turkish
defence to prod home
three clever goals as
the Gunners got their group-stage
campaign off and running despite
losing their keeper
Danny Welbeck struck his frst-ever
hat-trick but Wojciech Szczesny
was sent off as Arsenal crushed a
disorganised Galatasaray 4-1 in the
Champions League.
The England international struck
twice in the frst half and once more
in the second, frequently darting
past a hapless back line with clever
poked fnishes each time.
Alexis Sanchez hit Arsenal's third
just before the break, slotting home
with precision into the far corner
while under pressure in the penalty
area, as Arsene Wenger's side
registered their frst points of the
group stage.
It was not a night without problems
for the Gunners, though, as midway
through the second half Szczesny
darted off his line in a vain attempt
to snatch the ball from the feet of
Burak Yilmaz, succeeding only in
fouling the striker, who then put
the resulting penalty past substitute
David Ospina.
The visitors perked up a little as
they tested Ospina but Arsenal could
have had more, Santi Cazorla being
denied as his prodded fnish was
narrowly cleared off the line in the
dying moments.
Mathieu Flamini, Cazorla and
Alexis came into the Arsenal XI as
a result of midfeld trio Mikel Arteta,
Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere
sustaining injuries during Saturday's
1-1 draw against Tottenham. The
latter was able to take a place on the
bench despite his ankle complaint.
Galatasaray captain Selcuk Inan
was a late withdrawal due to illness,
meaning that Yekta Kurtulus came
into midfeld as Cesare Prandelli
plumped for a 3-5-2 formation to
which his side struggled to adapt
during a challenging opening period.
Visiting defender Felipe Melo made
a vital interception to stop Welbeck
getting on the end of Alexis's low
20th-minute cross but the same
combination put Arsenal ahead two
minutes later.
The Chilean cut in from the left fank
and slid a pass through to Welbeck,
who peeled off the back of Melo to
slot home.

Galatasaray made matters worse
in the 30th minute as an ill-
judged back header from Aurelien
Chedjou sold Melo short and
Welbeck left the Brazilian in his
wake to fnish clinically.
A torrid evening for Melo might
have ended early when he was only
booked for a two-footed lunge on
Alexis but, after a section of the
Galatasaray support interrupted
proceedings by throwing fares
onto the pitch, it was the Chilean
winger who ran riot - collecting
Mesut Ozil's pass and scorching
through the visitors' beleaguered
defence to fnd the bottom corner.
Kurtulus made way for Hamit
Altintop at half-time as Prandelli
reverted to 4-4-2 but it did little to
stem the tide.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
became the latest Arsenal player
to torment Melo, forcing Dzemaili
to clear from the goalmouth,
and the England midfelder was
the architect when Welbeck
completed his treble. A beautifully
judged pass through Alex Telles's
legs was collected by Oxlade-
Chamberlain's England team-
mate, who dinked nonchalantly
beyond Muslera.
Pandev's slide-rule pass caught
the Arsenal back four fat-footed
after an hour and Szczesny darted
out to be sent off as he was in
last season's second-round loss to
Bayern Munich at the Emirates
Stadium.
Burak made no mistake from
the spot, sending David Ospina
the wrong way, although the
replacement goalkeeper saved
impressively from the goalscorer
and Altintop in the fnal 10
minutes before Cazorla saw an
effort chacked off the line by
Semih Kaya at the other end.
Galatasaray now have it all to
do in Group D - this thrashing
following their opening 1-1 draw
at home to Anderlecht.
