WASH CLOTHES BY

USING BICYCLE
POWERED WASHING
MACHINE

hypothesis
1. When a big gear (driver) meshes
to a small gear (follower), it
produces more speed for the
washing machine.

2. When a big gear (driver) meshes
to a small gear (follower), it needs
more force to cycle.

Material used

Old bicycle unused washing machine iron rods rollers

toolkits Bolt and nuts woods screws

Welding machine different size of gear hand drill PVC pipe

Procedures
Step 1
Modify the washing machine
1. Remove the outer metal shell, usually white in colour,
from the washing machine by unscrewing every bolt on
the machine.
2. Take out the electric motor from the washing machine
frame.
3. Remove the pulley from the motor shaft.
4. Take off the drain hose that connects the tub to the
pump.
5. Make a stand to hold the washing machine with wood.
As shown in the picture below,

Making a stand for the washing machine
6. Tie the washing machine to the wood with iron string.
7. Screw the each part of the wood stand with bold and nut.
( Do not use nail because it is not that strong to hold a
heavy load).
8. Then connect two different size of gears with horizontal
and vertical under the washing machine.
9. Weld the gears to the washing machine.
10. We also fixed rollers under the washing machine
stand.

Step 2
Modify the bicycle

1. Remove the second (bicycle) rim and a tyre from the
bicycle.
2. Connect the back gear of bicycle with the horizontal
gear of washing machine.
3. Use an iron rod to connect both the gears.
4. Weld both the ends.
(Make sure both the gears and the iron rod rotates
together when the bicycle tyre is rotating.)
5. Fix a stand for the iron rod.
6. When the bicycle gear rotates, the horizontal gear and
vertical gear under the washing machine will rotate
together.

Step 3
Make the bicycle stable

1. Fix a stand at the middle of the bicycle. (To
make the bicycle stable)
2. The outlet fixed must be connected to the break
of the bicycle.
3. Make sure all the parts are connected well.
4. When cycling all the gears will rotate. This will
enable the motor of the washing machine to
rotate.
5. Test the bicycle powered washing machine.

speed and force.
8. Record the observation.

Safety precautions
1. Using gloves when handling material
such as gears, wood and toolkits.
2. Keep sharp objects such as gears,
cutters, player and screw driver in a
safety container.
3. Always have a safety box when
handling an experiment.

Introduction
A gear is rotating machine part having cut teeth or cogs, which match with
another toothed part in order to transmit force. Geared devices can change the
speed, force, direction of a power source. By understanding more about, design
an experiment by using various numbers of teeth in a gear and explain its
principle. In transmissions which offer multiple gear ratios, such as bicycles and
cars, the term gear, as in first gear, refers to a gear ratio rather than an actual
physical gear. The term is used to describe similar devices even when the gear
ratio is continuous rather than discrete, or when the device does not actually
contain any gears, as in a continuously variable transmission.

What do gears do... and how do they do it?
Gears are used for transmitting power from one part of a machine
to another. In a bicycle, for example, it's gears (with the help of a
chain) that take power from the pedals to the back wheel.
Similarly, in a car, gears transmit power from the crankshaft (the
rotating axle that takes power from the engine) to the driveshaft
running under the car that ultimately powers the wheels.

Four different ways to use gears
Gears for speed
In this simple gearbox, I've got (from right to left) a large gear
wheel with 40 teeth, a medium wheel with 20 teeth, and a small
wheel with 10 teeth. When I turn the large wheel round once, the
medium wheel has to turn twice to keep up. Similarly, when the
medium wheel turns once, the small wheel has to turn twice to
keep up. So, when I turn the large gear wheel on the right, the
small wheel on the left turns four times faster but with one quarter
as much turning force. This gearbox is designed for increasing
speed.

Gears for force
If I power the same gearbox in the opposite direction, by
turning the small wheel, I'll make the large wheel spin a
quarter as fast but with four times as much force. That's
useful if I need to make a heavy truck go up a hill, for
example.

Worm gears
Here an electric motor (the gray box on the right) and a
long screw-like gear to drive a large gear wheel. This
arrangement is called a worm gear. It reduces the speed
of the motor to make the large wheel turn with more
force, but it's also useful for changing the direction of
rotation in gear-driven machinery.

Rack and pinion gears
In a rack and pinion gear, a slowly spinning gear wheel (the pinion)
meshes with a flat ridged bar (the rack). If the rack is fixed in place,
the gear wheel is forced to move along it (as in a railroad). If the
gear is fixed, the pinion shifts instead. That's what happens in car
steering: you turn the steering wheel (connected to a pinion) and it
makes a rack shift from side to side to swivel the car's front wheels
to the left or the right. In simple weighing scales, when you load a
weight on the pan at the top, it pushes a rack straight downward,
causing a pinion to rotate. The pinion is attached to a pointer that
rotates as well, showing the weight on the dial.

Why we choose a bicycle powered
washing machine as an innovation?
From the findings we decided to do a bicycle powered washing machine. This
is because a washing machine can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars a
year to run depending on your type of washing machine, whether or not you use
hot, warm, or cold water, your energy companys prices, water companys prices,
and the number of loads you run per week. So, how about a bike pedal-powered
washing machine? Currently, there are many different designs and ideas for pedal
powered washing machines. The goals differ, but they include reducing energy
and water consumption and costs, and increasing accessibility for people who
cannot afford and/or do not have the energy capacity to own conventionally
powered washing machines. By now you are probably wondering how you can
manage to get your hands on a pedal powered washing machine... Unfortunately,
at this time there are no pedal powered washing machines available for mass
production and thus for purchase by consumers.
ADDITIONAL INFO
If a gear gives you more force, it must give you less
speed at the same time. If it gives more speed, it has
to give you less force. That's why, when you're going
up the hill in a low gear, you have to pedal much
faster to go the same distance. When you're going
along a straight road, gears give you more speed but
they reduce the force you're producing with the
pedals in the same proportion.

Factors affecting the experiments results.

1. It will be hard to get a result, if two gears do not
mesh together.

2. The speed can only be achieved according to the
ratio of the gears.

3. It is difficult to find out the ratio of gears which
produce more speed and power.

Advantages of using our bicycle powered washing machine
1. Our bicycle powered washing clothes not only helps in
washing clothes, but contribute in our health because
cycling is a form of exercise for our body.
2. The energy released from our body while cycling is not
wasted because it is used in washing clothes.
3. This bicycle-powered washing machine is environment
friendly because we save electricity and water.
4. This bicycle powered washing machine is a reusable
concept because it makes use of old and worn out
bicycle and washing machine.
5. Saves time when compared to washing clothes without
a machine
6. Cheaper than an electric washing machine and
portable.
7. Unlike an electric washing machine, it is not dependent
on electricity - if electrical supply fails, the washing can
still be done quickly.

Disadvantages of using our bicycle powered washing machine.
1. To conduct the bicycle powered
washing machine needs more time
allocation.

2. People with physical disabilities cannot
do this bicycle powered washing
machine.

3. Pregnant woman or elderly people with
illness cannot perform such activity.
