Apocalypsis Mosis (english translation)

The story and the times of Adam and Eve the protoplasts,[1]revealed by God to Moses His
servant, when he received the tablets of the law of the covenant from the hands of the Lord,
and taught to him by the archangel Michael.

[1]
1 This is the story of Adam and Eve.
2 After they went out of the Paradise, Adam took Eve his wife and went
into the east. And he remained there for 18 years and 2 months.
3 And Eve conceived and bare two sons; Diphotos,[2] the one called
Cain and Amilavs,[3] the one called Abel.

[2]
1 And after these had happened between Adam and Even, while they
were sleeping, Eve said to her lord Adam:
2 My lord, I saw in my dream this night the blood of my son Amilavs,
the one called Abel, pouring into the mouth of Cain his brother and he
drank mercilessly. And he begged him to let him have some of it,
3 but he would not listen, but drank the whole of it. But it did not
remain in his belly, but came out of his mouth.
4 And Adam said to Eve: Let us rise and go and see what happening to
them; in case the enemy is fighting them.

[3]
1 They both went and found Abel murdered by the hand of Cain.
2 and said God to Michael the archangel: Tell Adam that the secret
which you saw do not let Cain know, because he is a son of wrath.
But do not grieve, because I will give you another son instead of him
and he will tell you all that you shall do. As for you, tell him
nothing.
3 These did God say to His angel; and Adam kept the words in his heart
and Eve along with him; grieving for their son Abel.

[4]
1 After these, Adam knew his wife and she conceived and gave birth to
Seth.
2 And Adam said to Eve: Behold, we have begotten a son in place of
Abel, whom Cain killed. Let us offer glory and sacrifice to God.

[5]
1 And Adam made 30 sons and 30 daughters.
2 And he fell sick and cried with a loud voice and said: Let all my sons
come to me, so I can see them before I die.
3 And everyone gathered; for the earth was inhabited in three places.
4 And everyone came to the door of the house in which he went to
praise God. And Seth his son said: Father Adam, what is your
illness?
5 And he said: My children, I have great pain. And they say: What is
pain and illness?

[6]
1 And Seth replied and told him: Father, did you happen to remember
Paradise, of which you ate, and became saddened by desire?
2 If that is the case, then order me and I will go and bring you fruit
from Paradise. Because I will put dung on my head and I will cry and
pray and the Lord will listen to me and send His angel and I will bring
it to you, so your pain will cease.
3 And Adam said to him: No, my son Seth, but I have illness and
pain. And Seth said to him: And how did this happen to you?

[7]
1 And Adam said to him: When God created us, me and your mother,
because of whom I am dying, He gave us every plant in Paradise.
About one plant he ordered us not to eat from eat and because of it
we are dying.
2 And near drew the hour for the angels that were guarding your
mother to go up and bow down to the Lord. And the enemy gave her
to eat from the tree, knowing that I was not near her, nor were the
holy angels;
3 then she also gave to me to eat.

[8]
1 When we both had eaten, God was furious with us. And the
Sovereign [4]came into Paradise and placed his throne and called out
in a terrible voice and said: Adam, where are you? And why are you
hiding from my face? Do you think a house can hide itself from its
builder?
2 And He said: Because you abandoned my covenant, I have brought
down on you 70 plagues. The pain of the first plague: the violation of
the eyes; the second plague, the pain of the hearing; and so forth all
the plagues will fall on you.

[9]
1 And after Adam said these to his sons, he sighed greatly and said:
What can I do? I am very sorrowful.
2 And Eve cried as well and said: My lord, Adam, rise, give me half of
your illness and I will suffer it, for because of me has this happened
to you; because of me you are in hardship and pain.
3 And Adam said to Eve: Rise and walk with our son Seth close to
Paradise and place your heads on the earth and weep and ask God to
feel pity for me and send His angel into Paradise and give me from
the tree, out of which flows the oil, and bring it to me and anoint
myself and find rest; and I will tell you how we were deceived
earlier.

[10]
1 And Seth walked with Eve to the places of Paradise. And as they
walked Eve saw her son and a beast attacking him.
2 And Eve wept: Woe is me; If I come to the day of the resurrection,
all the sinners will curse me and say that I did not keep Gods
command.
3 And Eve cried out at the beast: Oh you wicked beast! Do you not
feat the image of God that you are fighting? How could you open your
mouth? How were your teeth made strong? How could you not
remember your subservience, that earlier you were a subject of the
image of God?
4 Then the beast cried out:

[11]
1 Oh Eve, it is not our fault that you are greedy, nor that you weep,
but it is your fault, because the beginning of the beasts happened
because of you.
2 How could you open your mouth and eat from the tree that God
ordered you not to? Because of his has our nature mutated.
3 Now you will be unable to suffer it, if I start calling you into account.

[12]
1 And Seth said to the beast: Shut your mouth and be quiet and stay
away from the image of God until the day of judgment.
2 Then the beast said to Seth: Behold, I stay away from the image of
God. Then the beast went away and left him injured and he went to
his tent.

[13]
1 And Seth walked with his mother Even near Paradise. And they cried
there, praying for God to send His angel and give them the oil of
mercy.
2 And God send to them the archangel Michael and he said to them
these words: Seth, man of God, do not ask in your prayer about the
tree from which flows the oil in order to anoint your father Adam. It
will not be granted to you now,
3 but at the end of times. Then all flesh will be raised, from Adam up to
that grand day, those that are holy people.
4 Then these people will be given all the mirth of Paradise and God will
be among them.
5 And there will be no more sinners before Him, because the wicked
heart will be raised out of them and they will be granted a heart that
is able to sense good and will only worship God.
6 Because the extent of his life has been reached, in three days you will
see the departure of his soul and its terrible ascent.

[14]
1 Having said that the angel left them. Seth and Eve came to the tent
where Adam was laid.
2 And Adam said to Even: What have you done to us and brought
down on us great wrath, which is death [dominating our entire
race]?
3 And he said to her: Summon all our children and our childrens
children and tell them the manner of our transgression.

[15]
1 Then Even said to them: Listen, all our children and our childrens
children, and I will tell you how our enemy deceived us.
2 It came to pass, while we were guarding Paradise, each one was
appointed a lot to guard by God.
3 And I was guarding my lot to the south and the west. And the Devil
walked in Adams lot, where the male animals were; [Because God
divided the animals and gave your father all the male one and to me
all the female ones and each one of us kept his own.]

[16]
1 And the Devil called out to the Serpent and said: Rise up and come
to me and I will tell you words that will benefit you.
2 The the Serpent came to him and the Devil told him:
3 I hear that you are the wisest over all the animals [5] and I have
come to counsel you. I have found you to be the greatest of the
animals and so I speak to you. But you bow down to him the least.
Why do you eat from the scraps of Adam and his wife and not from
the fruit of Paradise? Come, let us have him and his wife be cast out
of Paradise, as we were cast out because of him.
4 And the Serpent said to him: I fear that the Lord will be angered with
me.
5 And the Devil said to him: Fear not; just become my vessel and with
your mouth I will speak words with which you will manage to deceive
him.

[17]
1 And straight away he hang himself on the walls of Paradise, around
the time the angels of God went up to worship.
2 Then Satan became as an angel and he sang hymns like an angel.
And as I bent over the wall, I saw him identical to an angel. And he
said to me: Are you Eve? and I said to him: I am.
3 And he said to me: What are you doing in Paradise? and I said to
him: God put us here, so we can guard it and eat from it.
4 And the Devil responded to me through the mouth of the Serpent:
But you do not eat from every plant.
5 And I said to him: Yes, we eat from all plants but one, the one in the
middle of Paradise, about which God has ordered us not to eat from,
or we shall die with death.

[18]
1 Then the Serpent said to me: God lives![6] I feel sorry for you
because you are like animals. I want you to know this, so get up and
come and listen to me and eat and understand the value of the tree.
2 And I said to him: I fear that the Lord will be angered with me, as he
has told us.
3 And he said to me: Feat not. If you eat, your eyes will be opened
and you will be as gods in knowing what is good and what is evil.
4 When God realized this, that you would become similar to him, he
envied you and said: You shall not eat of it.
5 Look closely at the plant and you will see the great glory about it. And
I indeed saw great glory about it.
6 And I told him that it is good to look at and I feared to take from the
fruit; and he said to me: Come and I will give you. Follow me.

[19]
1 And I opened [the door] for him and he came inside Paradise and
passed in front of me and after a few steps we turned around and
said to me:
2 I changed my mind. I will not give you to eat. And he said this
because he wanted to tempt me and lead me to perdition. And he
said to me: Swear to me that you will also give your husband. And I
said to him: I do not know how to take a vow, but I will tell you what
I know.
3 By the throne of the Sovereign and the Cherubim and the tree of life,
I will give my husband to eat as well. When he had take my vow,
then he came and I climb onto him. And he placed on the fruit, which
he gave me eat, the poison of his wickedness, which was his desire.
Because desire is the head of all sin. And I pulled the branch towards
the earth and took from the fruit and ate.

[20]
1 And at that time my eyes were opened and I knew that I had become
naked of the justice I had been wearing.
2 And I cried and said: What have you done this and I have been
deprived of the glory which I had been wearing?
3 And I also cried about the oath. And he came down from the plant
and disappeared.
4 And I was looking about for leaves to cover my shame and I could not
find any from the plants of Paradise, because, once I ate, all the
plants around me lost their leaves; all except the fig tree.
5 And I took leaves from it and made wrappings for myself, and it was
from the plants from which I ate.

[21]
1 And I cried out a loud voice and said: Adam, Adam, where are you?
Rise up and come to and I will show you a great secret.
2 And when your father came, I spoke to him words of transgression
[which brought us down from great glory].
3 And once he came, I opened my mouth and the Devil spoke and I
started changing his mind by saying: Come, my lord Adam, listen to
me and eat from the fruit of the tree that God told us not to eat and
you will become like a god.
4 And your father responded and said: I fear that the Lord will be
angered with me.
5 And I said to him: Fear not. Once youve eaten, you will know good
and evil. And then I quickly convinced him and he ate and his eyes
were opened and he knew as well his nakedness.
6 And he said to me: Oh wicked woman, what have you done to us?
You deprived me of the glory of God.

[22]
1 And at that moment we heard the archangel Michael blowing his
trumpet and summoning the angels saying:
2 Thus speaks the Lord: Come with me to Paradise and listen to the
words with which I will judge Adam.
3 And when he heard the archangel blowing the trumpet we said:
Behold, God has come to Paradise to judge us. We were frightened
and hid. And God came up to heaven riding his cherubim chariot and
the angels singing hymns to Him. And because of this the plants of
Adams lot blossomed and the plants of my lot as well and they were
not withered.
4 And the throne of God was placed where the tree of life was.

[23]
1 And God summoned Adam saying: Adam, where did you hide? Did
you think I would not find you? Can a house hide from its builder?
2 And then your father answered and said: No, Lord, we did not hide
so you could not find us, but I am afraid because I am naked and I
felt shamed before your power, oh Sovereign.
3 And God said to him: Who let you know you were naked? Or did you
abandon my commandment which I gave you to keep?
4 Then Adam remembered of the words I told him, when I wished to
deceive him, that I will make you safe before God and he turned to
me and said: Why did you do this?
5 And I said that the Serpent deceived me.

[24]
1 And God said to Adam: Because you broke my commandment and
listened to your wife instead, the land will be cursed by your works.
2 When you work it, it will not give its strength, thorns and thistles will
spring up for you and by the sweat of your face will you eat your
bread. [You will suffer many and various toils and will find no rest,
you will be crushed by bitterness and the lack of sweetness,]
3 You will be crushed by heat and shrink by cold; and you will tire a lot
and not get wealthy and you will get fat and you will not come to an
end;
4 And the animals you ruled will revolt against you in upheaval,
because you did not keep my commandment.

[25]
1 And the Lord turned to me and said: Because you listened to the
Serpent and broke my commandment
2 You will be in the pains of labour and intolerable pain. You will bear
children in much trembling and at one time you will end up losing
your life because of your great need and the pains.
3 And you will confess and say: Lord, Lord, save me and do not allow
me to return to the sin of the flesh.
4 And for this reason and for your words I will judge you; for the
enmity the enemy placed inside you. You will turn again to your
husband and he will rule over you.

[26]
1 After he had said these to me, he said to the Serpent in great wrath:
Because you did this and became an ungrateful vessel in order to
deceive those close to me in heart, you will be cursed over all the
animals.
2 You will be deprived of the food you used to eat and will eat dirt all
the days of your life.
3 On your chest and on your belly you will walk and you will be
deprived of your hands and legs. You will not be left neither ear, not
wing, nor any member [similar] of those you deceived in your
wickedness and caused them to be expelled from Paradise.
4 And I will place enmity between you and his seed. He will pierce your
head and you his heel up until judgment day.

[27]
1 And having said these, he summoned his angels to throw us out of
Paradise.
2 As we were being led and crying greatly, your father, Adam, besought
the angels: Let me go a little so I can beg God to feel sorry and have
mercy on me, because I was the only one that sinned.
3 And they stopped driving him out and Adam cried out and said:
Forgive me Lord for what I have done.
4 Then the Lord said to his angels: Why did you stop driving Adam out
of Paradise? Is the transgression mine? Or did I judge poorly?
5 Then the angels fell to the earth and bowed down to the Lord and
said: You are just, Lord, and judge soundly.

[28]
1 And the Lord turned to Adam and said: From now on I will not let be
in Paradise.
2 And Adam responded and said: Lord, give me of the plant of life to
eat before I am cast out.
3 Then the Lord said to Adam: You will not receive of it. It has been
decreed that the Cherubim and the fiery sword that turns will guard
[the plant] because of you, so you will taste of it and become
immortal for all time.
4 You have the war that the enemy placed inside you, but once you
have been driven out, if you keep yourself from all evil, like someone
who is about ti die, when the resurrection will happen again, I will
raise you and then you will be given of the tree of life and will be
immortal for all time.

[29]
1 Having said these, the Lord had us expelled from Paradise.
2 And your father cried in front of the angels opposite Paradise and the
angels said to him: What do you want us to do for you, Adam?
3 And your father respoded to the angels: Behold, cast me out. But I
beg of you, let me take fragrance from Paradise, so after I have been
expelled, I can offer sacrifice to God, so He will listen to me.
4 And the angels approached God and said: Jael, eternal king, order us
to give Adam fragrant incense from Paradise.
5 And God decreed that Adam come and receive fragrant perfumes
from Paradise for his sustenance.
6 And the angels allowed him and he gathered both genders of suffran
and nard and reed and cinnamon and other seeds for his sustenance;
and having taken these he left Paradise.
7 And so we were on earth.

[30]
1 So there, my children, I have told you how we were deceived. You
should guard yourselves and not abandon what is good.

[31]
1 Having said these amongst her sons, while Adam was sleeping
because of his illness and had one day before he was to leave his
body, Eve said to Adam:
2 Why are you dying and I still live? Tell me, how much time do I have
after you die?
3 Then Adam said to Eve: Do not worry about these things. After I die
you will be late, but we will die in equal time. And you shall lie in my
place. And when I am dead, you should anoint me and no one should
touch me until the angel of the Lord speaks about me.
4 Because God will not forget me, but will seek for the vessel which he
created. Now get up and pray to God until I relinquish my spirit in the
hands of the one who gave it to me. Because we do not know how will
meet our Creator; whether He will be angered with us or will receive
us and have mercy on us.

[32]
1 Then Eve got up and came outside and fell to the earth and said:
2 I have sinned, oh God, I have sinned, oh Father of everything, I
have sinned before you, before your elect angels, I have sinned
before the Cherubim, I have sinned before your immovable throne, I
have sinned, oh Lord, I have sinned a lot, I have sinned against you
and every sin in creation exists because of me.
3 And while Eve was praying on her knees, behold, the angel of
mankind [7]came to her and stood her to her feet and said:
4 Get up Eve from your repentance. Behold, your husband Adam has
left his body. Stand up and see his spirit rising up to meet the One
who made him.

[33]
1 And Eve stood up and placed her hands on her face and the angel
said to her: Rise out of these earthly matters.
2 And Eve looked to the sky and saw a chariot of light coming, drawn
by four bright eagles the glory of which is impossible to be
described by someone born from a womb, nor to see their faces and
angels were leading the chariot.
3 When it came to the place where your father lay, the chariot stopped
and the Seraphim were between the chariot and the father.
4 Behold I saw golden censers and three bottles and behold, all the
angels with incense and the censers and the bottles came to the altar
and were blowing smoke from the censers and the vapours of the
incense covered the firmaments.
5 And the angels kneeled and bowed down to God crying out and
saying: Jael holy one, forgive, because he is Your image and creation
of Your holy hands.

[34]
1 And I Eve saw straight away two great and terrible wonders standing
before God. And I cried with fear and cried out to my son Seth
saying:
2 Come Seth, leave your fathers body and come to me, so you can see
what no eye has ever seen praying for you father Adam.

[35]
1 Then Seth stood and came to his mother and said to her: What is
wrong with you? And why are you crying?
2 And she said to him: Raise your eyes and see the seven firmaments
opened up; and see with your eyes how your fathers body is lying on
its face all the holy angels with it, praying for it and saying: Forgive
him, Father of everything, because he is Your image.
3 I wonder, my son Seth, what this is? When was he delivered to the
hands of our invisible father, our God?
4 And who are those black men [8] accompanying your fathers
prayer?

[36]
1 And Seth said to his mother: They are the Sun and the Moon and they
fall down and pray for my father Adam.
2 And Eve said to him: And where is their light and why have they
become dark like that?
3 And Seth said to her: They cannot shine before the light of
everything and for that their light was hidden.

[37]
1 While Seth was saying that to his mother, the angels who were on
their faces blew their trumpets and cried out in a terrible voice
saying:
2 Blessed be the glory of the Lord on his creations. He has shown
mercy on the creation of His hands, Adam.
3 When they had cried this out, one of the Seraphim the six-winged,
came and snatched up Adam and carried him to the Acherusian Lake
and washed him before God.
4 When he had laid for three hours, the Sovereign of all stretched out
his hands, while sitting on his holy throne, and picked up Adam and
delivered him to the archangel Michael, saying:
5 Raise him to Paradise, up to the third heaven and leave him there up
to that great and terrible day of reckoning in the world.
6 And Michael the archangel took him and left him there, as God had
said when he had forgiven Adam.

[38]
1 After all of these, the archangel took care of the funeral of the
remains.
2 And God commanded all the angels to gather before Him, each one in
his own [angelic] order. And all the angels assembled, some with
censers, some with trumpets.
3 And the Lord of Hosts came on and the winds drew Him and the
Cherubim mounted on the winds and the angels of heaven were in
front of them; and they all came where Adams body was laid and
they took it.
4 And they came into Paradise and all the plants of Paradise stirred, so
all born of Adam would fall asleep; all except Seth who was born
according to Gods own terms.
5 So Adams body lay on the ground in Paradise and Seth was grieving
exceedingly over it.

[39]
1 And the Lord God said: Adam, why did you this? Had you kept my
commandment, those bringing you down here would have no joy.
2 But Im telling you: their joy I will transform into sadness; and your
sadness I will transform into joy, and when you return, I will sit you in
your power on the throne of the one who deceived you.
3 And he will be cast out of this land, as you will be seated above him.
Then he and those that listened to him will be judged and they will be
very saddened and they will weep when they see you sitting on this
honourable throne.

[40]
1 And then he called the archangel Michael:
2 Go to Paradise in the third heaven and bring Me three purple silken
sheets. [9] And God said to Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael:
Cover Adams body with the sheets and bring of the oil of the oil of
fragrance and pour it over him. And they did so and they buried his
body.
3 And the Lord said: Let Abels body be brought as well. And bringing
other sheets they buried him too,
4 because his body was left unburied since the day Cain, his brother,
murdered him. Cain the Wicked tried hard to hide the body, but he
could not, because the earth would not accept it and said:
5 I will not accept another body, before the dust that was taken from
me and fashioned return to me. Then angels took it up and placed it
upon the stone, until his father was died,
6 And they were both buried as God commanded in the places of
Paradise, at the spot where God found the dust.
7 And God sent seven angels in Paradise and they brought a lot of
fragrances and places them on the earth; and thus they took the two
bodies and buried them in the place they had dug and built.

[41]
1 And God called out to Adam and said: Adam, Adam? and the body
responded from the ground and said: Here I am, Lord.
2 And the Lord said to him: I told you that you are dust and in dust
you shall return.
3 Once again I promise you the resurrection. I will raise you in the final
day with the resurrection of all men that came from your seed.

[42]
1 After these words God made a triangular seal and sealed the
monument, so that no one could do anything to him in the six days,
until his rib is returned to him.
2 Then the man-loving God and the holy angels returned to His place.
3 After six days Eve died as well. While she was alive she cried about
the dormition, because she did not know where he body would be
placed. When the Lord was in Paradise, when they buried Adam, she
was asleep along with her children, except Seth, as I have already
said.
4 And Eve begged at the moment of her passing that she be buried
along with Adam, her husband, saying thusly:
5 My Sovereign, Lord and God of all virtue, do not reprive you servant
from the body of Adam, because you made me from his members,
6 But find me worthy, make this unworthy and sinful [woman] be
buried along with his body,
7 As I was with him in Paradise and after the transgression,
inseparable. In the same manner, let no one separate us.
8 And after she had prayed, she looked up at the heaven and stood up
and hit her breast and said: God of all, accept my spirit. And she
immediately surrendered her spirit to God.

[43]
1 And after she had died, the archangel Michael came to help and three
angels took her body and buried it where Abels body was.
2 And the archangel Michael said to Seth: In this manner you should
bury all dead people until the day of the resurrection.
3 After he had given this commandment he said to him: You should
mourn for six days and on the seventh day stop and rejoice, because
on this day God and us angels rejoice as the worthy soul leaves from
the earth.
4 Having said that the archangel Michael went up into heaven glorifying
and saying hallelujah,
5 [Holy holy holy is the Lord, in the glory of God the Father, because
he is worth glory and honour and worship along with His
beginningless and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever and in the
centuries of centuries, amen.]
[Holy holy holy is the Lord of Hosts, because His is the power and the
glory in the centuries of centuries, amen.]
[And the archangel Joel glorified the Lord saying: Holy holy holy is
the Lord; the heaven and the earth is full of his glory.]

FOOTNOTES
1 : The ones created first
2 : Full of light. Charles mentioned that it can also be
found as and it is probably based on the same logic
that Satan is Lucifer, the light-bringer.
3 : Corrupt word, possibly from the armenian barekhooh
= well-minded
4 : Tricky word to translate into english, since the word
despot doesnt have positive conotations. Charles translates it as
Lord, but this doesnt differentiate the word from , hence
I chose Sovereign to translate this kingly title.
5 : The word means beast, but in this context it means
specifically animal and I translated it in this manner so as to
avoid confusion with the beast Seth battled.
6 : Exclamatory expression used to augment the following
statement. Informally we could translate: Good grief! You live like
animals!
7 : Archangel Michael (this is
mentioned in other apocrypha as well)
8 : Literally, men with black faces. Charles uses the now
politically incorrect negroes.
9 : The sheets are asked to be the same
colour as sour cherries.
