TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER Headmasters Corner This has been yet another very busy week with a large number of highly successful fixtures taking place. Preparations for the Inter-House Talent Show took up most break times and National Poetry Day was on Thursday. On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome Kin Simplis-Barrow, the First Lady of Belize to the school. Year 8 were, as you would expect, impeccable and greeted her with all their usual charm. She was in the area with her husband Dean Barrow, the Prime Minister of Belize, to promote The Belize Childrens Trust. Tom and Lucy performed their duties as Head Boy and Girl well and looked after Harrison Leadbeater and Katherine Woodhouse (Reception) before they handed over a small gift.
On Tuesday Librarian badges were awarded and we wish all the librarians every success in their new roles.
We look forward to publishing pictures of the Talent Show next week but in the meantime we wish our children every success in the Inter-House Rugby and Hockey Tournaments tomorrow morning. Coffee and croissants will be served from 10,30 am in the Pavilion throughout the morning. Please feel free to take your refreshments over to the Astro to watch the hockey! Good Intention and Politeness Award Congratulation to the following children who have been nominated for the Good Intention and Politeness Award: Henry Packham, Rachel Shutt, William Bate, Diego Benito, Roshan Patel, Oliver Shutt, Archie Symonds, Logan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Hann, William Sheppard and Tom Edwards. The award for the first quarter goes to William Bate for being keen, happy and enthusiastic. National Poetry Day National Poetry Day was a great success on Thursday. We had poetry flowing from all directions all day. The day started with the Pocket Lady Assembly where some children chose poems to be read aloud. In class children listened to their teachers favourite poems and shared some of their own. In all English lessons from Years R to 8, poetry was written on the theme of Remembrance. These poems are absolutely lovely and thank you to all parents who remembered to send in souvenirs. The children really enjoyed taking part in this adventure. We are hoping to make a book of the days poems so watch this space. The library displayed poems sent in by parents - thank you again the Reading Tree is laden with poetry. And the Setter Cabinet is full of a miscellany of objects for the Memory Game, which many children took part in at lunchtime, again with the help of Mrs Edwards and the new Junior Librarians and some Year 8s. The library has displays on AA Milne and Michael Rosen two national treasures of poets. I would highly recommend that you look at clips of Michael Rosen performing his own poetry on You Tube with your children. We listened to the Childrens Favourites CD, which we have in the library, whilst browsing the poetry books on display. Altogether a very poetic, and I hope, memorable day. Arnolfini The trip to the Arnolfini Theatre for the Childrens Book Show takes place next Wednesday. Years 5 and 6 are going in the morning, followed by Years 2 and 3 in the afternoon. Years 5 and 6 will be seeing Patrick Benson, who illustrated The Minpins by Roald Dahl. Each child has their own copy of the book, which we read in the library this week, and they can bring it to be signed on the day. They will also have a workshop with Patrick on Thursday afternoon here at school. Years 2 and 3 will be going to the theatre to see Benji Davies. 2012 Tockington Manor School, Washingpool Hill Road, Tockington, Bristol, BS32 4NY. A CHOICE OF HOMEMADE CAKES & BISCUITS AND WRAPPED BISCUITS Rugby Star! Congratulations to Nathan Adams who has been selected for the U16 Gloucester County Rugby A Squad. Nathan is an Old Tockingtonion, currently in Year 11 at Wycliffe. He will also be taking part in trials for the South West Regional team which could lead to trials for England. We wish him lots of luck for all of his future matches! Tockington Titbits Ella and Rohan Howard-Robinson both completed the Royal Yachting Association Stage 1 of windsurfing and sailing whilst on holiday in Sardinia. Congratulations! Frankie de Bradeny did a sponsored walk around the Serpentine in Hyde Park to raise money for the Walk About Foundation. Monies raised go towards buying wheelchairs for people around the world and to funding research into spinal injuries. Well done, Frankie! Book Buzz Years 6 and 7 all received a new book this week provided to us by the Book Trusts Book Buzz programme which they run in schools nationally. The children had great fun choosing books from a wide range and they were able to look online at author interviews about the books. There was a real buzz in the classroom when the choices were being made and then again when the books arrived. The Trust also sends us two free sets of the books for the library, so those are now on display and ready to be borrowed. Book Shop The Book Shop will be open for the first time next week. You should have received a Permission to Buy slip for your children. If you have not, please could you drop into the office for one. We have great selections of new and second-hand books and the children love to browse in the bookshop. All purchases are paid for through the Childrens Book Allowance, which you have signed. Do encourage your children to come and have a look there are some great bargains! Book Swap & Book Donations If you have books at home that your children would like to swap for another, they can bring them in and exchange for any book from the Book Swap shelf which is in the library. The more we use this, the better it will get! Also, if you wish to donate books in good condition to the library, we are very happy to put books on our shelves. If we have duplicates, we will put the books on the Book Swap shelf, in the Book Shop or in our great Book Sale, which is coming soon. Many thanks for all donations and all of your support in getting the children reading and loving books. Totally Tockington We have a number of hopeful new recruits to Team B as well as a new Editor and sub-Editor. We will announce these next week, so if there are any more eager journalists out there, please get an application form from Ms Case or Tom Edwards. The first paper from Team B will be out on Monday, so look out for it! 2012 Tockington Manor School, Washingpool Hill Road, Tockington, Bristol, BS32 4NY. The Weekly Newsletter of Tockington Manor School 3rd October 2014 TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER Milkshake Monday Morning We have had two Milkshake Monday Mornings one with Year 8 and the other with Year 7. Both groups had their strawberry milkshakes and biscuits in the library and explored some fine literature. Year 8 looked at a great book called Soldier Dog written by Sam Angus, while Year 7 got stuck into some mythology. Once more we thank Mrs Baglin and Mrs Edwards for their tireless support of this initiative. And a huge thank you to the kitchen staff, who make it all possible. Bikes for Boarders We would like to encourage our boarders to ride bikes and use our lovely top field but have a shortage of bikes! If anybody has a bike they are willing to donate to the boarding house for an overseas boarder we would be very grateful. Our overseas boarders tend to be between 10 to 13 years old, so that size bike would be perfect. Please contact Mr or Mrs Glanville in the boarding house. U9 & U13 Hockey Teams at home versus Clifton College Mufti Day for Year 7 Year 7 have been rewarded for all of the positive comments made by the teachers in a recent Form Teachers meeting with a Mufti Day on Thursday 16th October. 2012 Tockington Manor School, Washingpool Hill Road, Tockington, Bristol, BS32 4NY. The Weekly Newsletter of Tockington Manor School 3rd October 2014 TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER TOCKINGTON TRACKER Malvern College Arts Day Malvern College hosted a fantastic Arts Day which a group of Year 7s and 8s attended. Four of our budding artists, Alex Jacobi, Beth Pritchard, Alex Gooch and Eleanor Parker, displayed great teamwork and collaborated to create an amazing zoo keepers outfit. Their work was exhibited at the end of the day alongside other childrens work. Another group came to practise their Design & Technology skills, producing a bag using Photoshop and creating their own 3D camera design for a 3D printer. Unfortunately, no models were produced as each one takes eight hours to print, but Max Curtis, Oliver Shutt, Antonia Hopcraft-Guest and Abigail Blackwell thoroughly enjoyed learning some new skills.
