Stay On Target with the Flexibility
of the Octal C40 Board
5
When it comes to DSP boards,
none can match the options
and configurability of Penteks
Model 4285 Octal C40 VME.
You specify the number of
processors, the memory cap-
acityeven the I/O facilities.
There are so many options, its
like getting a custom board
right off-the-shelf.
Your budgets will stay right
on target because you only
pay for the memory and pro-
cessing power your applica-
tion requires. Load up your
board with 64 MB of DRAM,
27 MB of SRAM. Put up to
2.2 GOPS and 400 MFLOPS
of processing power at your
fingertips...and let it fly with a
variety of I/O optionsinclud-
ing RACEway, VME64,
VSBbus, VME Master, MIX and
PMC mezzanine busses and
eight front panel comm ports.
Youll be ready for future
growth, too, because the 4285
allows you to retool your
board configuration for differ-
ent applications.
Plus, youll hit the ground
running with an unrivaled
array of software tools, includ-
ing FTL, SwiftTools, and
SwiftNet communications soft-
ware, high-level languages,
compilers, debuggers, DSP
libraries and dozens more.
We also offer expert appli-
cations support and one year
of free software upgrades.
The Power of the C40
The fifth generation
TMS320C40 from
Texas Instruments
is one of the most powerful
general-purpose floating-point
DSP processors.
Its architecture is specially
designed to maximize perfor-
mance. It offers parallel pro-
cessing, high-speed communi-
cation ports, and six internal
DMA controllers to relieve
the CPU of burdensome I/O
tasks. Separate program, data
and DMA internal busses
support massive concurrent
program and data I/O.
These features are key to its
50 MFLOPS and 275 MOPS
performance rating. A C40
can perform a 1k real FFT in
1 msec and a 128-tap FIR filter
in 5.4 sec. These bench-
marks apply to the 50 MHz
chip
and are 20% faster with the
60 MHz version.
The C40 maintains source
code compatibility with the
C30 and can utilize the exten-
sive software support available
from Texas Instruments and
numerous third-party vendors.
C 4 0 C P U ( P G A P a c k a g e )
No other vendor in the industry
approaches the assembly of
memory like Pentek has with
its 4285 board. The unique
design of what Pentek coined
as memory wafers is a new
standard for memory attribution
that is well on its way for
patenting.
The memory wafers are
actually miniature encapsulated
circuit assemblies fabricated
utilizing the latest in chip-on-
board packaging technology.
These stackable wafers contain
various sizes of local and
global memory resources for
each processor. Each processor
on the board can be equipped
with the customer-specified
memory size that is appropriate
for their application.
This is a tremendous cost
savings because you only order
the appropriate amount of
memory that is needed at that
time, eliminating any waste.
And, this new wafer design can
be easily replaced or upgraded
for future applications, so this
board can grow with you as
applications and system
demands change.
Industrys First Scalable Memory Approach
Shown below is a simplified
cross section of a typical
processor with memory wafers
installed. Each wafer contains
male/female stacking contacts
which mate with the pins of the
C40 and mating female sock-
ets on the main board.
A typical processor site con-
sists of three stacked compo-
nents: the global memory
wafer, the local memory wafer,
and finally the C40 DSP on
top. The two wafers are directly
under the C40 and are con-
tained within the outline of the
corresponding C40.
The local memory wafer
houses up to 2 MB of SRAM in
addition to containing the boot
flash EEPROM. The global
memory wafer houses up to
2 MB of SRAM. The close
proximity of the SRAM devices
to the C40 results in extremely
short trace lengths. This leads
to dramatic reductions in line
capacitance, crosstalk and ring-
ing, providing optimum perfor-
mance even at the higher clock
rates expected in future chip
releases.
The memory wafers utilize
advanced thermal management
techniques in the circuitry and
encapsulation to ensure cool,
efficient and reliable operation.
This clever arrangement
saves valuable board space
which can be used to further
expand the flexibility and avail-
able standard options of the
Pentek 4285.

with each other, therefore mini-
mizing data moves and
improving real-time perfor-
mance.

The 4285 RACEway Interface
allows master and slave access for
the RACEway bus on P2. The
global I/O busses of processors A,
B, E and F are each equipped with
FIFOs to buffer data for efficient
block transfers.
Processor B is equipped with
both input and output FIFOs and a
complete RACEway master inter-
face. It initiates transfers in and out
of the FIFOs by setting up address
and routing information to any
other RACEway devices.
Processors A, E and F are
equipped with input FIFOs which
appear as RACEway slave devices
and may be loaded from any
RACEway master.
Interrupt inputs can be enabled
for each processor to signal the
presence of input or output data in
the FIFOs for easy implementation
of C40 DMA transfers. Peak data
rates of up to 160 MB/sec are
supported.

Mezzanine Interfaces
Mezzanine architectures provide a
private data and address path that
improves transfer rates and avoids
bottlenecks on the VMEbus. The
MIX bus (Modular Interface
eXtenstion) and PMC (PCI
Mezzanine Card) architectures,
both developed by Intel, are each
supported independently for the
4285 and were chosen because of
their high-throughput rates, reliabil-
ity and flexibility.
Pentek offers a variety of MIX
and PMC modules so you can cre-
ate your own powerful subsystem
to fit your application. You can
use Penteks MIX or PMC boards or
use other manufacturers boards
since both mezzanine architectures
are open and non-proprietary. You
can reconfigure the same modular
building blocks to satisfy new
requirements just by adding or
changing the module. Your Pentek
MIX or PMC system never
becomes obsolete, as new technol-
ogy devices become available, we
design them into new MIX and
PMC modules and add software
drivers to support them. Custom
configurations are also available if
your application requires special
needs.

Shown above is the model 4285 with the MIX Adapter installed, ready to accept up to three
MIX modules. In this system, two MIX modules are being attached to the MIX adapter. The first
module attaches directly to the MIX adapter and occupies the slot adjacent to the 4285. The
second MIX module then stacks on top of the first, creating a powerful, three-slot MIX subsystem.
Shown here is the Model

MIXModule
MIXConnector
MIXAdapter
4285 Board
Accepts up to three MIX
modules using four slots
Optional 64 MB DRAM
25 MB/sec throughput
The 4285 MIX Adapter provides
two access methods to the MIX
module from the C40s.
In the first method, the MIX bus
is memory mapped into the 4285
Main Bus address space. Since the
4285 Main Bus is mastered by all
eight C40s, these devices are all
capable of reading or writing to
any of the three MIX modules.
The second even faster access
method is through the global I/O
busses of C40 processors A, B, E
and F. Each of these C40s can
master the MIX bus for data trans-
fers to and from any module with
data rates up to 25 MB/sec. The
benefit of using these global bus
I/O paths is that the connection is
private and data transfers are com-
pletely independent of other data
flow elsewhere on the board.
A powerful bus switch manages
arbitration and control to permit
maximum access and utilization of
the MIX bus.
An optional 64 MB DRAM
memory is available for storing
large blocks of data. The memory
appears as a mapped resource of
the 4285 Main Bus and is accessi-
ble by all eight C40s. Main Bus
access to the DRAM is completely
unaffected by global bus I/O trans-
fers on the MIX bus.

The 4285 can be equipped to take up to three PMC (PCI
Mezzanine Card) modules in its double width front panel
format. You can install up to three PMC modules on the

Dual PCI bus architecture
132 MB/sec throughput
The 4285 PMC Adapter features
a unique dual bus design. The
global I/O busses of C40 proces-
sors A, B, E and F are each
equipped with individual C40-to-
PCI bus interfaces.
These interfaces incorporate
internal dual-port SRAMs for flexi-
ble and efficient data moving. Each
interface also includes a bypass
mode so each C40 can directly
access a PMC module for control
and setup. The PCI bus interface is
handled by the industry standard
PLX9060 interface chip.
Two processors and two PMC
module sites are tied to PCI bus #1.
The other two processors and a
third PMC module site comprise
PCI bus #2.
This arrangement allows both
PCI busses to operate in parallel at
peak transfer rates of 132 MB/sec
each.
A PCI-to-PCI bus bridge is also
provided to allow data transfers
between PCI bus #1and PCI bus #2.
This supports access by all four
C40s to any of the three PMC
modules. It also allows data trans-
fers among any of the three PMC
modules.
This extremely flexible architec-
ture solves nearly every type of sys-
tem requirement, ranging from sim-
ple, single C40 applications with a
single PMC module, to high-band-
width, multi-processor tasks involv-
ing multiple PMC modules.

Communication between the host
and target in a development sys-
tem is one of the most prevailing
and difficult issues for a system
designer and has become even
more complex as additional host
platforms, development tools and
DSP board designs are developed.
To help bridge the gap between all
of these tools and platforms and to
allow multiple users to communi-
cate freely, SwiftNet was devel-
oped.
SwiftNet is a powerful commu-
nications protocol that links your
workstation and Pentek develop-
ment tools to your VMEbus DSP
processors. SwiftNet treats DSP
processors as network devices and
supports all possible combinations
of platforms, tools and boards
therefore improving the develop-
ment environment overall for
embedded DSP applications.
SwiftNet is based on an appli-
cations programming interface
(API). The API provides a uniform
host-target link that can be applied
to the widest variety of configura-
tions, giving you the inter-operabil-
ity that is needed in a multi-plat-
form system.
SwiftNet allows you to share
data in both local and remote
locations and with multiple targets.
Over long distances you can share
data over the internet because its
based on the TCP/IP protocol. For
example, JAVA applets can be
used for remote locations.
Work groups with several work-
stations linked by Ethernet can also
use SwiftNet to access the same
VMEbus card cage. SwiftNet even
allows each developer to access
different DSP chips on the same
multiprocessor board. Basically,
you can share your data with as
many users as needed wherever
they are located.
Software is the lifeblood of any
hardware product and thats why
Pentek has a dedicated staff of soft-
ware designers ensuring that we
offer the most powerful products
on the market today.
We understand that you have
applications to develop and dead-
lines to meet. Our software prod-
ucts enable you to tap into the
power of our DSPs and I/O prod-
ucts with ease. Our software line
is also compatible with other third-
party software including Parallel C,
Virtuoso, COSSAP, SPOX, SPW,
Texas Instruments debuggers and
compilers, Multiprox, VxWorks
and many others.
Along with our software prod-
ucts comes free maintenance and
upgrades for one year. So, youll
always be guaranteed the latest
version of any of the software
products we offer.

FTL is a complete file management
system for VMEbus-based digital sig-
nal processing (DSP) and data acqui-
sition subsystems and includes a
collection of software libraries for
initializing, organizing, sorting and
retrieving data. FTL offers data
streaming support for single- or
multichannel A/D and D/A convert-
ers; SCSI disk and tape drives; local
RAM disks; digital I/O, TMS320C40
comm ports; host workstation file
systems; and all VMEbus devices.
FTL is available with a GUI or
command-line interface and allows
the user to create multiple, real-
time streams between any of the
peripheral devices and files on the
SCSI device or the host worksta-
tion. FTL also supports file trans-
fers between the SCSI device and
the host file system permitting data
to be collected in real-time on the
SCSI device within the VMEbus
card cage and then later transferred
easily onto the host file system.
FTL is compatible with Penteks
SwiftNet, based on the industry-
standard TCP/IP interface for ether-
net. SwiftNet supports a network
of VMEbus systems connected via
ethernet to a host computer, such as
a PC-AT running Windows 95/NT
or a Sun SPARCstation running
SunOS. It allows the developer to
run development tools on the host,
while maintaining remote access to
VME target systems.
FTL was developed for Pentek by
DSPCon, DSP software developers
and consultants.

SwiftNets One-Time Configuration
Set Up
SwiftNet is extremely easy to con-
figure because you only have to do
it once! SwiftNet maintains a
network directory of all DSP target
devices. All you do is define the
board parameters like the base
address, interrupt level, addressing
mode, etc...and give the DSP a
user-specified name. This name
can then be used with all of our
supported development tools to
specify the DSP you want to use.
Not only does using high-level
symbolic names make DSP develop
ment tools easier to use, it also pro-
vides system flexibility.
Reconfiguring your system due to
design changes or hardware
upgrades becomes a snap. For
example, if you configure a Model
4270 (Quad DSP processor) and
called it fft_brd and then decide to
replace it with a Model 4285 (Octal
DSP processor), you simplychange
the parameters associated with
fft_brd using the configuration utili-
ty. All system connectivity to and
from fft_brd remains intact. The
only change your tools see is that
there are now eight C40s to access
instead of
four.
Downloading and Debugging
SwiftNet resolves all VMEbus
addressing for each target, eliminat-
ing the difficulty often encountered
in establishing the necessary link for
downloading and debugging code.
Pentek program loaders utilize
the SwiftNet protocol to direct exe-
cutable code files from the host file
system into the appropriate memory
space of any DSP target board.
SwiftNet also has a C-Standard I/O
Server (SNIO) bundled with it that
allows programs on the DSP to read
and write files to the host system.
This software products ability to
handle multiple targets greatly sim-
plifies loading of multiprocessor
boards and systems.
In addition, since SwiftNet oper-
ates on an interrupt basis, it incurs
zero overhead while the DSP pro-
gram is executing, which is vital for
real-time applications.
DATA DATA
Sample configuration of the Model 4285.
FTL runs on Penteks DSP boards and supports host workstations connected via
ethernet, DSP processors and peripherals over the VMEbus and SCSI storage devices.

SwiftTools is a debugging resource
for complex interprocessor tasks. In
conjunction with an array of third-
party software tools, you can view
and analyze your data in a win-
dowed environment.
One of the most powerful
SwiftTools features is its ability to
support code development on more
than one target. On multitasking
host platforms such as HPand SUN,
you can have multiple copies of
SwiftTools open at the same time,
one for each target processor, and
you can debug each target in paral-
lel. In addition, non-multitasking
DOS allows you to have multiple
sessions open in one window. So
you can switch from session to ses-
sion when debugging multiple DSPs.
For example, by defining separate
sessions for all eight processors on
the Model 4285, you can use
SwiftTools to debug handshaking
between them. Each processor can
be independently loaded, run with
or without break points, single-
stepped or halted. You can track
each of the eight programs at the
source code and assembly code
levels and display the current values
of program variables as they are
updated.

WINLAB, supported by a grant from
the NSF, has pioneered an approach
whose effectiveness grows as DSP
power increases. The Soft Radio
they are developing envisions the
design of a universal transmitter/
receiver built around a programma-
ble DSP which would enable this
piece of hardware to function in
different ways: AM-FM radio
receiver, cordless phone to function
anywhere in the worldjust to
name a fewsimply by changing
the software.
SystemRequirements:
Study and optimize reception in
cellular telephones
Maximize the number of users
sharing the same bandwidths
without compromising speech
quality
Use as much DSP power as
possible
Expandable hardware for future
system growth
SystemSolution:
WINLAB came to Pentek for most of
the equipment needed to implement
the system, shown below. The
FPGA board handles sample-level
processing tasks which have sample
rates up to 1.25 MHz, while the
DSP processor handles information-
rate tasks, such as speech
processingall in real-time. Besides
action as the system controller, the
SUN also generates the input signal.
The signal is sent to one of the
C40s which acts as the signal con-
troller. The signal is then sent to the
FPGA board for sample processing
and finally sent back to the other
C40s for processing. All signal
exchanges are routed through the
6472 high-speed A/D converter,
4272 digital receiver and the 4241
parallel I/O board.
Before the hardware was put
together, it was simulated with the
Signal Processing WorkSystem
from the Alta Group of Cadence
Design Systems. Pentek supplied
the drivers.

SystemRequirements:
Multi-channel Active Noise
Cancellation (ANC)
Aircraft Cabin
16 loudspeakers and microphones
(variable)
High interdependency between
channels
Sparc development via remote
ethernet to 68k VxWorks host
SystemSolution:
Figure 1 shows the complete system
solution. For sampling up to 16
microphones and driving 16 loud-
speakers, a 4265 with 16 channels of
A/D, D/A is used. The 4265 includes
comm port interfaces to allow easy
connection to a processor board. As
multiple processors will no doubt be
required, at least one Octal C40 VME
4285 board is used due to its high
processor density, easy signal I/O via
comm ports as well as simple connec-
tion to other multiple processor units
if required.
The 4285 is sited in a rack hosted
by a 68k board running VxWorks with
SwiftNetproviding the host to DSP
link for remote multi-user access and
communication to the development
tools. As this algorithm needs com-
plex inter-processor communication
and easy scaling, 3L Parallel C is used
because of its multi-processor
enhancements to the TI compiler.
Development:
3L Parallel C is a multi-processing
upgrade to the standard TI tools for
the C40 DSP. Based on these excel-
lent code generation tools, it adds all
the multi-processing functionality
required to allow you to build high-
performance parallel DSP systems.
Features include complex network
loading, host file I/O from any proces-
sor and a large selection of C libraries
for common tasks such as inter-
processor communication and syn-
chronization. A real-time micro-ker-
nel handles multi-tasking, interrupt
handling, etc. This results in faster
development and better overall sys-
tem optimization than if using the TI
compiler on its own.
The ANC application is first
described as a block diagram showing
all the channel inputs, outputs, FIR fil-
ters and coefficient updating functions
required for the adaptive signal pro-
cessing. Each block is coded as a
standard C program using C/ASM,
optimized libraries for FIR filter and
LMS implementation, and Parallel C
libraries for inter-processor communi-
cation and synchronization. For
example, a function call such as:
chan_out_message
(size, signal, output[0]);
would send a block of signal data of
length size, starting address signal to
the task which was connected to its
output comm port 0. And a function
call such as:
link_in(size, x, 0);
would input a block of signal data
from the A/D of size length from the
C40s comm port 0 into variable x.
A final make stage allows the
developer to place any compiler and
linked C program (task) on any
processor of the Octal 4285 and
connect any two tasks together just
by editing a text configuration file.
Logical connections to and from a
task are re-routed automatically if
it is moved.
For example, the three tasks A, B
and C of the ANC application in
Figure 2 are connected together and
placed on the C40s of the Octal
4285 with the statements in the
configuration file of Figure 3. DSP3
and DSP5 do not even need to be
on adjacent C40s connected by
comm ports for this to be achieved.

64-Channel Receiver System
SystemRequirements:
Two 30 MHz wideband HF inputs
Select any 8 kHz band within
DC-30 MHz
Send 8-channels to one C40 for
processing
Provide operator control for storing
any channel to disk or sending data
to audio headphones
SystemSolution:
This 64-channel receiver system
accepts two wideband 30 MHz
signals into the Model 6472 Dual
Channel 70 MHz 10-bit A/D
Converter. Digitized samples for both
channels are sent down the front pan-
els of eight Model 6509 eight-channel
narrowband receivers. Each receiver
can select either of the two input
channels.
The tuning frequency of each of
the 64 receiver channels is program-
mable over the VMEbus by setting the
frequency of each local oscillator.
The frequency range is DC to 30 MHz
with a resolution of better than1Hz.
A second programmable parameter
sets the receiver output bandwidth
which can range from 1 kHz to 1
MHz.
Using a new feature of the Model
6508 and 6509, all eight channels
of data can be combined over a
single output comm port. In this
way, each eight-channel stream can
be sent directly into a C40 on the
Model 4285.
The option -031 MIX Mezzanine
adapter accepts the Model 4260 SCSI
Adapter for disk storage and the
Model 4252 16-channel sigma-delta
A/D-D/A for the audio outputs.
