Dr AJAY PRAKASH’S PROFILE

A name to be reckoned with in the world of surgery, Dr Ajay

Prakash shot into world fame, February 2004, when he
successfully performed 62 operations of Gall Bladder removal,
non-stop, in a single shift of 16hrs, at Agra’s Shanti Ved
Hospital. (And not for money or status, but to express his
love for the suffering poor, on Valentine’s Day, February 13).

Over years, Dr Ajay Prakash has been perfecting his unique

single-hole surgical technique that has taken the medical
world by surprise. The technique, which Dr Ajay Prakash admits
is a divine gift to him, has no side effects or complications
and is compatible with the medical needs of a resources-
starved community.

His innovative technique and the record-making feat last year

did not go unnoticed. The news was widely publicized on
television channels, news websites and newspapers, resulting
in a spate of inquiries and question and answer sessions from
patients across the globe. (See attached list of media
coverage). He enjoys the rare distinction of getting patients
from all over India as well as from abroad countries like
USA,UK Dubai etc.,a rare feat which very few surgeons in the
country enjoys.

Humble at heart but gifted with a determined and focused pair

of dexterous hands, Dr Ajay Prakash has been merrily going
around executing his mission with sincerity that is
infectious, as evidenced by the complete devotion of his team
of doctors including his wife Dr.Divya, a well-known
gynaecologist and now son Dr.Shwetank who is fully geared to
inherit the legacy of his illustrious father.

When Dr Ajay Prakash carried out 62 operations, all free, on a

single day, Feb. 13, 2004, The Hindustan Times wrote about his
feat: “Dr Prakash has innovated single hole surgery that
requires a very small incision to be made in the abdomen which
is used to inspect the abdominal cavity before any diseased
organ-gall bladder, uterus, appendix or an ovarian cyst-is
detached and removed. His surgery is different from
laproscopic surgery which involves 3 to 4 holes.”

On 24th January 2005, Dr Ajay Prakash bettered his own

performance performing 75(69 Gall Bladder and 6
appendicectomy)operations in 20 hrs nonstop session. Khaleej
Times reported on February 6, 2005, “Prakash’s feat was meant
to demonstrate the effectiveness and affordability of the
single hole surgical technique he has invented.”
Yahoo, the news portal, applauded Dr Ajay Prakash’s unique
achievement in a story titled: “Agra surgeon performs record
75 operations,” noting that the president of India Dr APJ
Kalam, had himself appreciated his effort and during the
course of a personal interaction at Rashtrapati Bhavan, shown
keen interest in his innovative technique that holds promise
and hope for millions of sufferers.

Mumbai’s Free Press Journal, quoting Dr Ajay Prakash, reported

that unlike “the high cost gadgets used for Laparascopic
surgery, Dr Prakash uses equipments costing hardly Rs 10,000.
My operation are less traumatic and dependence on equipments
is minimal,” Prakash explained.

This year, the operations were carried out before a

distinguished panel including the principal of the 150- year
old SN Medical College, Agra, Dr Deoki Nandan, and senior
administrative officials. District Magistrate Nitishwar Kumar
applauded the record-making performance of Dr Ajay Prakash
through his commendatory letter dated February 17, 2005.

What motivates him to carry on improving his records, Dr Ajay

Praksh is candid enough to accept that he himself doesn’t know
how and why he has been doing it, “but there is a providential
design and blessings of Devi Ma, who enables me to carry on
without eating or drinking. A life without higher goals and
mission would be too dull and boring for me.”

Contentment is written large on his face, as Dr Ajay Prakash

focuses on his next target, a century of operations, again,
non-stop, in a single shift and all through his own developed
technique. “God willing, and with the blessings of all my
well-wishers, I am all set to hit the target,”

A glance through his bio-data, leaves one dazed.Born on 28-04-

52, An outstanding performer at every level, including at the
Medical College where he was the recipient of more than a
dozen prestigious awards, Prakash has a long list of
pioneering feats to his credit. As early as 1981 he started

Recognition for his efforts has come both from professional

bodies as well as those treated by him, now living a healthy
life. For the past decade Dr Ajay Prakash and his team of
dedicated doctors have been recording unique achievements to
their credit and the journey is not over yet.

Agra citizens are truly proud of Dr Ajay Prakash who deserves

recognition at the highest level, both as a symbol of
dedicated service to the community and for developing a unique
technique that holds hope for millions of people who can not
afford complicated operations due to cost factors or risks
involved because of physical disabilities that do not permit
conduct of conventional surgical procedures.
