Allusion - a figure of speech in which abstract ideas and principles are described in
terms of characters, figures and events.

anaphora - the deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to
achieve an artistic effect

antithesis the exact opposite of something

aphorism - a statement of truth or opinion expressed in a concise and witty manner.

colloquial/colloquialism the use of slang writing and phrases in writing.

conceit - a figure of speech in which two vastly different objects are likened together
with the help of similes or metaphors

connotation - a meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing which it
describes explicitly.

Denotation - literal or dictionary meanings of a word in contrast to its connotative
or associated meanings.

diction the way words are pronounced and portrayed by a writer

didactic to provide instructions for something

euphemism - a polite way of saying something rude or impolite

figurative language

hyperbole - an exaggeration and emphasis of something to prove a point.

imagery the way to describe, represent abstract ideas, and actions to appeal to the
readers

invective - denotes speech or writing that attacks, insults, or denounces a person,
topic, or institution

irony/ironic - a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their
intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.

litotes - is a figure of speech which employs an understatement by using double
negatives or, in other words, positive statement is expressed by negating its
opposite expressions.

metonymy the description of words closely associated but doesnt necessarily
mean it.

onomatopoeia - a word, which imitates the natural sounds of a thing.

oxymoron - is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an
effect.

paradox - a contradicting statement

personification a non living object that is given human like features and quality

repetition - a literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to
make an idea clearer.

rhetoric the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of
figures of speech and other compositional techniques.

Satire the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize
peoples stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and
other issues.

syllogism an argument with reference to something general and ends with
something more specific

symbol/symbolism a concrete representation of an idea

syntax the way something is formatted
