Group Project
Students will work on a team containing 4-5 people to produce a 5-7 page (double-spaced) analysis of a specific area of an organization’s HR strategy. Each group will select a specific local company or government to analyze and must interview/meet with an HR representative from that organization to gather the necessary data. Students will also deliver a 15-20 minute  presentation of their project to the class in which each team. Students are expected to produce work of university-level quality. This includes careful attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling in all written assignments. Additionally students should craft clear and deliberate arguments and present their work in a well-organized format. When participating in groups, students are expected to contribute fully to the production of competent and complete work. If problems arise with the contribution(s) of one or more group members, students should first try to resolve the issue within the group. Group members should involve the professor in instances of negligence when necessary. Groups should choose one of the following areas for the project: 1. HR Planning and HR Strategy 2. HR Staffing 3. Compensation and Benefits 4. Equal Employment Opportunity/Diversity 5. Performance Management 6. Training and Development 7. Other (with consent of instructor) Each group paper should include the following information: 1. Description of the specific HR area of concentration that includes major issues, practices, and the problems/challenges facing HR managers. This section of the assignment must include

3 reference to at least three peer reviewed articles that address the problem or challenges identified above. 2. Explanation and reference of material related to the specific program or practice. For example, groups focusing on performance management should include examples of the  performance appraisals used by the organization. 3. An evaluation of the program or practice in light of your knowledge of the topic gained in the course and readings. Include an analysis of how this program supports the strategic objectives of the chosen organization and provide recommendations for improvement.
A grading rubric that identifies the specific requirements for the paper and presentation will be distributed later in the class.
eLearning Assignments
Students are required to respond to three discussions question via eLearning throughout the semester. Questions will be posted on eLearning a week prior to the due date and responses are due by the beginning of class on the due date. Failure to post a response by the due date will result in a “zero” for the assignment, no exceptions. Specific requirements for these assignments will be posted on eLearning.
 Human Resource Journal
The student will write a one-page reading reaction after the readings each week. There are nine weeks of reading, so the student will have nine pages in their journal. The reaction is not a summary. The student should relate the readings to their own personal experiences or a current event. Students may also provide a critique of the reading. The purpose of this assignment is to show that the student has read the material and can relate it to real-world circumstances. The weekly paper needs to be brought to class so that the student can incorporate his or her thoughts into the class discussion. Random checks of student progress are possible. The second part of the journal should include newspaper articles that relate to the topics each week. Each article should be printed out and followed by a half page summary. There are nine topics so there will be nine submissions for this section. The final journal should be stapled with a page dividing the reading reactions and the newspaper articles with summaries.
Class Participation
Students should come prepared for class discussions and actively participate in class activities. The quantity and quality of your classroom questions and commentary is a critical part of the learning process and an important element of your overall grade.
Extensions Special Exceptions:
No extensions are granted for written work. Unexcused late papers will be penalized one grade increment per every two days late. Note that unless otherwise specified, all assignments must be submitted in hard copy during class meetings and submitted through turnitin.com.
