INTRODUCTION

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is one of the nomenclatures in the
implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program (BEP) composed of four components;
namely, Agri-Fishery Arts, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and Information and Communication
Technology. In this module, the focus is on Home Economics mini-course - CAREGIVING.

Now that the workforce is far behind in equating the number of available jobs, the
Department of Education is revitalizing its resources to lead the young minds and to prepare them
as a skillful and productive member of the labor sector. It is in honing the skills that learners, like
you, can assure to have an edge of surviving the daily needs of oneself and of others.

Indeed, as learners of caregiving, you are a crucial link in the emergency response process.
Ideally, everyone should know what to do in an emergency situation, more advanced training can
help an individual
provide basic care.

This module is specically designed to focus on Process and Delivery. It is enriched with
different activities that will assess your level in terms of skills and knowledge, that you are
expected to demonstrate after completing this learning materials. Learning procedures are divided
into different sections - What to Know, What to Process, What to Reect and Understand, and

Caregiving became a moral obligation of anyone making logical decisions because it leads to
rendering quality services (such as equating the existing demand of the market). Satisfying the needs
and wants of the customers will require a thorough analysis of his/her personal prole, purchasing
power, and product or services preference.
Aligning capabilities, interest and skills help develop and utilize the needed competencies to the
fullest purpose to serve the nation and its people.
Through this module, learners will have opportunities to see the bigger picture about the what
and how of the real industry that works and operates. Having learners condence to do the basic
operations in caregiving will elicit respect and trust from their client (besides being the means or source
of income to grow professionally).

Trivia Time
DID YOU KNOW THAT?

!
The mercury-in-glass or mercury thermometer was invented by physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in
Amsterdam (1714). It consists of a bulb containing mercury attached to a glass tube of narrow
diameter; the volume of mercury in the tube is much less than the volume in the bulb. The volume of
mercury changes slightly with temperature; the small change in volume drives the narrow mercury
column a relatively long way up the tube. The space above the mercury may be lled with nitrogen or
it may be at less than atmospheric pressure, a partial vacuum.
!
The word sphygmomanometer comes from the Greek "#$%&'( (sphygmos, pulse), plus the scientic
term manometer (pressure meter). The device was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch
in 1881.[1] Scipione Riva-Rocci introduced a more easily used version in 1896. In 1901, Harvey
Cushing modernized the device and popularized it within the medical community.
!
A sphygmomanometer consists of an inatable cuff, a measuring unit (the mercury manometer, or
aneroid gauge), and a mechanism for ination which may be a manually operated bulb and valve or a
pump operated electrically.
