Educational Requirements:
B.Tech / M.Tech (Computer Science/Information Technology/Electronics & Communication) from a reputed School
and University.
I was a FAE for a couple of years for one of the top disti's. All of the for mentioned is correct. Although
the travel can be more than just a little. You do develop people skills which can be a very good thing for
engineers as we can be a bit anti-social. I had to support six inside sales people and six outside sales. You
would be the technical arm of your companies sales. The good news is that you get to talk to other
engineers. The bad news is that you have to get your information from non technical people most of the
time. It can be lots of fun and you get trained on all the new up and coming electronic stuff ahead of
everyone else. After a couple years of this though I found I missed design and went back to it. I did learn
a great deal while I was there though.

- Should support the sales team to meet their targets. For instance, should travel with the Sales Engineer
to the customer location with proper strategy. If the meeting is w.r.t a requirement of a new Hardware
component then the FAE should have enough technical information about that part so that he can
convince the customer to use it.
- Should work on the customer projects in the their locations. For ex, if the customer is using a
microcontroller from your semiconductor company (suggested by you/other colleagues) and they are
facing some issues in it then FAE is the one who has to solve it and keep the project running. Else in the
worst case the client may turn towards other MCU from other vendor which will lead to a potential loss
to your company.
- Should be up to date in the core nature of work which may include software tools, hardware
components, development kits etc. For ex, if you are a FAE for a Semiconductor company (or
distributors of this company) which manufactures memory chips then you need to have detailed
information on each chips part number, specifications and features. Also it will be great if you have
some informations of the rival companys chips too. This will help you to explain better to the clients
during demonstrations on the product.
- Prepare and maintain the list of running projects of the clients. This is important because FAEs one of
the primary responsibility is to make sure that the prototype projects of the customers are turned into a
final product. It is only then your company will start making profits since the customers will start
requiring more components/tools when they enter into the mass production stage.
- Need to take part actively in the research and development in the design centers to develop reference
models for customer convenience purpose. This is because some of the customers need a
prototype/working model of some of your products so that they get convinced.
- Prepare white papers/techical documents/application notes/presentations on the products. This is
because the customer maynt have all the information of your product. So such documents can be used
by them as a starter kit in developing there projects.
- Should have good communication skills to impress the customers by giving proper demo on the
products. Also the FAE should quickly adapt to the work environment. This is helpful when the FAE is at
the customer location and working with them in a project. He/She should adapt in the team in such a
way that the project is not affected.
- Attend trainings conducted by the partners and acquire certifications. For ex, If Qualcomm is the
semiconductor partner for your distribution company then you need to keep yourself up to date with
their latest chipsets.
- Should be capable to deliver under pressure.

Role of a Field Application Engineer FAE in Semiconductor
design Cycle
Role of a Field Application Engineer FAE in Semiconductor design Cycle

Field applications engineers are technical support engineers for salesman and marketing at
technology companies. A field application engineering job provides the opportunity to travel,
work with engineers, on leading edge designs and seal up design and product contracts. In this
capacity, field applications engineers are critical in that they suggest new technology and provide
different design approaches that make for top selling products.

Skills
1. Field applications engineers need a wide range of skills and a good technology base to work
from. Because field applications engineers provide technical support, sometimes they must give
technical presentations, and other times they must actually create or modify designs. They also
must be familiar with technical product specifications and be able to point out the specific
technical merits of one product over another, and do so convincingly.

Good customer relation skills are also very important. Because customers want to be assured that
the technology is reliable, the field applications engineer must be able to back up technical
claims. This often requires that the field applications engineer prepares and present computer
simulations, engineering calculations, research papers, data sheets, company and competitor
reports.
Work Environment
2. Many field applications engineers work at regional company sales offices and design centers.
Often these small facilities are staffed with just one or two marketing and sales support staff. The
field applications engineer often travels with a salesman to local customer sites. Because the
working environment at these small offices is casual, some field applications engineers often just
use the office as a central meeting place, as opposed to a day to day work place. Corporate field
applications engineers often must work with large national and international accounts. This
requires that they often must be on site or travel long distances.
Education
3. The main requirement to obtain field applications engineer position is usually have a
bachelor's degree in a technology area. Ideally, the technology degree required is most often
related to the product line that a company offers. For electronics company, a bachelors in
electronic engineering may be required, but for a motor control company, such as a robotics
company or automobile company, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering may be
preferred. For an environmental and alternative energy company, those with degrees in electrical
engineering that emphasize power management and electric generation technology such as
thermal, solar, and hydro electric power may be considered more ideal.
Salary
4. Field applications engineers according to indeed.com have a salary range that varies between
$35,000 and and $105,000 with an average salary of $87,000 as of 2010. Salary.com also reports
that salaries for field applications engineers are 33 percent higher than other types of engineers.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide a classification for field
applications engineers. Engineering salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that
the pay level for field applications engineers is on the high end of the engineering pay scale.
Training
5. Field application engineers often must be trained about new products and new technology.
This is often done at large companies through extensive field applications training programs.
Large companies will often sponsor large events where all the field applications engineers from
around the country meet up for several days of training. More so, with the advancement of
elearning applications, more field application engineers are being trained on line and through
video teleconferencing.

Field applications engineers (FAE )are technical support engineers for salesman and marketing at
technology companies. A field application engineering job provides the opportunity to travel,
work with engineers, on leading edge designs and seal up design ins and product contracts. In
this capacity, field applications engineers are critical in that they suggest new technology and
provide different design approaches that make for top selling products.

Today the FAE specializes in Communications . Communicating and interfacing with the end
customer for the following 3 topics will be the main criteria or job requirement

1. Hardware
2. Software
3. Mechanical Design of the product

Hardware
Hardware involves in the technical ownership of the design support to end customer who is using
the product. Hardware alslo involves in designing or using the development kits, Proto board
design , testing of the target boards, proto boards.

Software
Software involves in understanding Real Time Operating Systems ( RTOS ) , drivers for RTOS ,
Front end , back end systems , Embedded Firmware , Coding in C or Assembly

Mechanical design

In the age of ipads , iphones consumer gizmos , the end product of a customer involves
Mechanical design .
Mechanical Design include 3D CAD design, rapid proto typing , Plastics , quality , feel

Other qualities of a FAE include

Developing strong relationships with customer engineering and management
teams.
Ensuring that customers reach production on schedule to accelerate revenues.
Interface between customer, sales, marketing, Factory Applications, R&D,
operations and quality teams to resolve customer issues as required.
Provide on-site customer support often at short notice.
Regular visits to customer R&D Centers for Training and relationship
development.
Recreate, analyze and resolve customer technical issues.
Developing novel approaches to debugging customer issues.
Create and present technical training courses.
Provide feedback to Marketing & R&D on customer feature requests and how
customers use products to help drive future product definition.
Create application notes and demonstration systems.
Support sales team with technical pre-sales support, including generating
documents, white papers and presentations.
Mentor junior members of the team and/or be responsible for a small team

I have been recently asked by someone as what it takes to be sucessful application
engineer . So, I thought why not blog about ..Though much of it is written from EDA
industry perspective, it applies for appln engineers in other industries as well. So, here it
goes .
1. Technical expertise : You have to be atleast good if not proficient in the domain..for
example, lets say, if you are application engineer for a formal verification product, you
need to have expertise in the FV techniques and good understanding as what
logic/physical synthesis tools do in terms of optimization. Just mere tool knowledge will
not suffice..
2. You should be a like a double edged sword ..You need to be able to understand the
hardware designbe it RTL , Scan insertion , P&R or CTS and at the same time , you
should be able to understand how the algorithm (tool) behaves (from software
perspective..)..If you dont understand both, you will not be able to understand what the
HW designer is trying to accomplish and at the same time, you will not be able to find
out if the tool is missing any feature or is it a limitation of the technology and finally if it
is a bug one more important reason is , you might need to translate the designers
intention into a feature speficiation and direct your R&D.
3. Business Sense : I think this is very important component for an Appln engineer. You
need to be in constant touch with the customer and get feedback on the product. You
should be able to sense the impact derived from that feedback. Whenever there is a
oppurtunity to promote a new product, you should do so immediately and let your
marketing/sales team know about it immediately. Just being technical is not enough.
Application engineer without good business sense can negatively impact the company he
represents.
4. Pre-Sales : Ability to benchmark against the competitor and convince him about your
products technical merits. Depending upon the competetion and product and domain in
which you operate, this can be very intensive and grilling. Failure is not an option . A true
winning aptitude and to do whatever it takes is absolute must. No compromises.
Im not exagaretting , but it might involve some sacrifices like working during xmas or
thanksgiving . Pre-Sales campaigns can very stressful and can burn a person. So, if
you cant work under pressurized environment and have strict rules about your work
timings, then you might not like this role. Believe me there are some customers who
keep evaluating for very long time or they evaluate now and then re-evaluate after
couple of months and there are reasons why they do like this ( first and foremost reason is
to check the quality of the tool ) . So it is tiresome and it requires willingness to walk
that extra mile to win the benchmark is a must.
5. Post-Sales/Deployment : A succesful tech campaign and business(pre-saleS) win is the
starting step. The 20/80 rule applies here ( 80% of the business comes from 20% of your
customers). So, sucessful deployment of the product across the depth and breadth of the
company is key . It will also gives Sales folks a chance to push other products
into the company. Dedicated and fast support is one of the strategies. Providing support
for their first tapeout with your companys product is another key. A sucessfull
deployment also means to work with the design methodology groups, designers ( front
end and backend ), understanding their design goals and issues ; resolving their issues . It
might be necessary to come up a design methodlogy /flow either on a project basis or
company wide . A constant interaction with the design team is a must . This also helps
the appln engineer to see what is lacking and fill in the gaps either through scripting or
getting R&D implement the missing features and enhance the product.
6. Evangelism : Not many folks know about this. Some people mix this with the
marketing. This is virually non-existent in EDA/semiconductor industry. Marketing is
more about the product , evangelism is creating a community around the product. Who
else can be a better person other than the appln engineer to do this?
7. Customer Facing Skills : Only few people have this skill and like to be infront of
customers. You need to have some thick skin and take all the yelling ..Imagine when
you are presenting or giving a demo to a customer and your tool crashes everytime you
invoke it , scary isnt it? okk..lets ease up a bit, it crashes only few times, how can you
face the customer now? You should be able to ease and control the situtation I can list
hundreds of scenarios like this . It also takes a great deal of energy to say NO to a
customer. Believe me its not an easy situtation. You need to be diplomatic when saying
so sothat relationships arent hurt . It all comes by experience and ability to dynamically
change the situtation on the fly
8. Issue Management : Very important skill . Should be in constant touch with the
customer , track down the issues and have a proper resolution to all their issues with a fix
schedule . It is important that the customer acknowledges and is actually OK with the fix
schedule. If the schedule is missed for any issue, customer should be informed
immediately.
9. Time management : Ability to multi-task is a must.
10. Debugging Skills: If you are not good in debugging or cant debug fast enough, you
dont fit to be an Appln engineer.
11. Attitude : Having a proper attitude and ability to learn things fast is necessary to
suceed in the job. You might need to learn different technologies, products/tools to
perform your job better.
12. Peer-Peer Commn : Try to maintain peer-peer communication. There is no book
which teaches on how to debug faster or perform each of the above skills I mentioned
sofar. It is only through peer-peer communication you can learn . You might have an
experienced AE in your organization, who can give you pointers ; its not that you cant
solve it , Its that the other AE has done it 100 times and so knows the common pitfalls .
You can avoid doing the same mistakes and save your valuable time.
13. Product Strategy : This requires knowledge in competitors products and its features ,
different technologies , business sense. Only then you will be able to place the product
strategically infront of the customer.
14. Licensing Model : It is not essential , but very good skill to posses and understand
how the licensing works like what features can be licensed ( to understand this, you need
to justify why the customer will pay for this in the first place ) . If you know of any other
venues through which you can generate a revenue for your software, it surely helps the
Sales organization. Remember sales fix everything
