EVENT TO SUPPORT BREAST CANCER INITIATIVES AT OCEAN ROAD CANCER INSTITUTE
INTRODUCTION
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer organization and charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. ORCI marked the event by organizing a charity walk that aimed at raising funds for breast cancer initiative from October 2013.
The objectives of the fund-raising was; Broad objective To scale up the national prevention of breast cancer in Tanzania through implementation of an effective program involving awareness, screening, early detection, diagnosis and treatment; as well as fund-raising
Specific objectives To create awareness of breast cancer as well as to ensure that community understands that with early detection, the disease can be cured. To invite all people to get a free breast cancer screening. Raise funds for the breast cancer initiatives at Ocean Road Cancer Institute focusing on breast awareness, screening and early detection, as well as treatment of breast cancer
Fund-raising During the preparations, we managed to open ORCI accounts for tigopesa 0659534299, mpesa 175555 and airtel money 0686679325. These were accounts which were set to collect donations and contributions. In addition, ORCI accounts were used to collect money through direct deposit into the bank. The accounts were;

A total of Tshs 24,506,300 was raised for the initiative. The contributions were from individuals and institutions.
PROPOSAL FOR EXPENDITURE OF THE FUNDS As it can be seen in the aim and objectives of the charity walk, these funds will be used in the main areas of awareness, screening and early detection, and in treatment. It is proposed that the percentage allocated for the collected funds will be as follows; Breast cancer awareness 30% (Tshs 7,351,890/=) Breast cancer screening and early detection 30% (7,351,890/=) Breast cancer treatment 40% (Tshs 9,802,520/=)
For the breast cancer awareness, the funds will be used in the following areas Printing of brochures and posters Production of a documentary on breast cancer Airing of the documentary in popular TV and radio Awareness equipments Digital camera and Video Camera
For breast cancer screening and early detection, the funds will be used for; Procurement of films for mammography Procurement of reagents and equipments for cytology and histology services Support for mammography or FNAC for eligible patients; and the support is limited to Tshs 50,000/= per patient
For breast cancer treatment, the funds will be used for; Treatment by chemotherapy for selected patients The selection criteria is; early stage cancer and the support is limited to Tshs 500,000/= per patient
Therefore, the organizing committee is submitting to you a request for expenditure of the funds as per above outlined criteria.
