City council unanimously approved the south fire sta-
tion roof restoration project Monday evening, clearing
the way for the much-needed upgrades and restoration
of the Greater Mack facilitys roof.
The building was built in 1956, fire chief George
Morehouse said. The last roof, to the best everyone can
recall, was 12-15 years ago. This current roof is at the
end of its lifetime. When it rains the guys do have to put
big garbage cans in strategic spots to catch some of the
water.
The city put the project out to for bid in September,
with four companies showing interest in the project and
a pair of sealed bids being submitted.
Roof Restoration Technologies came in with the low-
est bid of $15,250.
The bonus to this is we have a 10-year warranty, the
chief said. And if we keep our heads up on this, and if
we re-look at it before the 10 years are up and that 10
years expires, and we have the seams sealed and what-
ever, theyre willing to give us an additional 10-year
warranty. Thats kind of a neat option that they have in-
cluded with their bid.
The south fire stations roof is the worst of the citys
three stations, Morehouse told the council.
It is the worst, he said. Central is in pretty good
shape, and occasionally we catch a little water and we
call a company out to get right to wherever our leaks
are. Its nothing major like the seams thats occurring at
the south station.
The project is set to get underway within 30 days,
Moorehouse said, beating the impending cold winter
weather.
Thats our goal, he said. And it should take two
weeks.

The roof of the south fire station is going to be restored before the winter thanks to the councils approval for re-
pairs. The roof has leaked to the point where firefighters have to place garbage cans beneath holes in the roof
when it rains.
City council approved a
Lawn Restoration Project
Monday awarding an
amount of $50,000 to
Landscape Services to aid
in the repair and restora-
tion of lawns torn up as a
result of water main break
repairs.
Unfortunately, were
still seeing the negative
impacts of last years
har s h wi nt er,
Department of Public
Works Director Bryan
Babcock said. The item
that Im bringing forward
tonight is for the lawn res-
toration work that we do
after water main breaks
and sewer repairs.
In the past, the depart-
ment has been able to
handle the work in house,
Babcock told the council.
As soon as the water
main breaks stop in the
spring, he said. We get
on the lawn restoration
work and we do that for
the next 2-3 months. Last
year, the restoration work
went all the way through
the summer and we final-
ly got it done. This year,
we started our restoration
work at the end of May,
and we were able to keep
working on it, but about
July 20 we started seeing
our summer (water main)
breaks so we had to pull
our crews off restoration
projects. Right now, we
still have approximately
150 locations where we
have to do lawn restora-
tion.
The amount forced the
departments hand, and
they put out a bid for help
with the project.
Were still working on
doing as many as we can,
Babcock said. But there
are maintenance activities
to our water distribution

The Womens Civic
League of St. Clair Shores
took a moment in the
opening portion of
Monday nights city coun-
cil meeting to make a very
special presentation.
This year we held our
second annual softball
game, civic league presi-
dent Janice Nearon said.
It was a lot of fun.
More than fun, however,
the Guns-N-Hoses Charity
Softball game had a much
higher purpose for the or-
ganization, Nearon said.
Money raised at this
years event was divided
amongst two charities,
each one connected with
with the citys police de-
partment and fire depart-
ment respectively.
These checks are go-
ing to go to the fire de-
partment and the police
department, Nearon
said. One for Cops 4 Kids
and the other for the
Great Lakes Burn Center
so they can send a child to
camp.
St. Clair Shores police
officer Kevin Kimm gra-
ciously accepted the
check on behalf of Cops 4
Kids and was quick to

system that is lacking be-
cause were having to put
all of our attention on to
the restoration. Whats
most important to me is
for us to get on those
maintenance activities
and get those done before
winter and contract out
some of this lawn work.
The department did
have fund remaining from
last years budget,
Babcock said.
Im requesting that it be
carried over, it was in the
water department under
services, he said. We had
about $55,000 dollars, and
Im asking that $50,000 of
that be carried over to
fund this work.
City manager Mike
Smith clarified to council
that the recommended
contractor wasnt the low-
est bid of the three the city
received for the project.
However, concerns
about whether the lowest
bidder could complete the
project arouse based on
the size of the company,
Smith said.
Its important that we
get this work done, Smith
said. We have reserva-
tions about the low bid can
get the work all done in
this season or not. Thats
why were recommending
the second-lowest bidder.
The difference is less
than $800 between the
two bids.
I dont see us being able
to keep up on all this resto-
ration work. I think its go-
ing to be necessary in the
future to continue using a
contractor to help supple-
ment our work, Babcock
said. Were going to try
and get as much as we can
done, but at some point we
would have to pull the
plug and get our guys on
other maintenance activi-
ties that we have to do for
our water system. We cant
just be planting grass all
summer.
Several members of the
council questioned the
recommendation given it
wasnt the lowest bid or
the three submitted.
Despite the concerns,
the two-year contract was
approved 5-2 with council-
man John Caron and
Councilwoman Candice
Rusie dissenting.
The approved project is
not a replacement of the
stations roof, but rather a
restoration, Morehouse
said.
This is resealing its cur-
rent seams and putting a
double layer of seal over
the seams, the chief ex-
plained.
A true roof replacement
isnt necessarily needed,
Morehouse said.
The roof still has a lot
of good integrity, he said.
The companies feel that
doing the repairs that are
currently specd out will
give us a 10 year life on
that roof.
thank the organization for
their efforts.
I just want to say
thank you, Kimm said.
This is our second work-
ing with the womens civ-
ic league and the fire de-
partment. Its a real plea-
sure. Were hoping that
the third year, which
were going to have in
August, even going to be
an even greater success.
On behalf of the fire
department, were really
thankful for the event,
fire chief George
Morehouse said. This is
a good benefit to the kids
to be able to go to burn
camp and become kids
again, if you will, because
its a venue where the
kids arent looked upon
as just showing their
burns. Everyone has sim-
ilar injuries and issues
and they really get to be
kids again there.
Each organization re-
ceived about $350 from
the womens civic league
as a result of the game.
The Guns-n-Hoses
event, its a great idea, a
great event, Mayor Kip
Walby said. Its a nice
community event.

Above, Robby Gaffigan is all smiles as he gets the chance to use a real firehose dur-
ing the open house. Firefighter Matt Zabel helps Gaffigan out. Below, A crew uses
the jaws of life to remove the roof of a vehicle during a demonstration. Below right,
Victoria Larkins helps her son, Derek, with a craft at the event.
A crowd of people
gathered around the
south east corner of the
parking lot at the citys
central fire station
Sunday afternoon.
The more than 100
people, of all ages, looked
on intently as St. Clair
Shores firefighter Scott
Campbell explained what
was going on behind him.
These firefighters are
first going to pull the
valve stems out of the
tires, Campbell told the
crowd. Then theyre go-
ing to break out the glass
in the car.
The crowd looked on
as the three firefighters
did just what Campbell
said then grabbed the
famed jaws of life, tool
and began cutting the
roof of a white sedan
right off.
Thats amazing, Gary
Dubiassi said. That cut-
ter is going through that
car likes a hot knife
t hr ough but t er.
Amazing.
The demonstration
was just a small portion
of the departments open
house event, an event put
on by the firefighters
union local 1744.
This event is huge for
us, Campbell said. It re-
ally is a big deal for all of
us firefighters. Its a
chance for us to show the
residents just what we do,
what their tax dollars
help make possible. This
is a tangible thing for
people to see. It really
showcases us and the de-
partment.
Campbell was one of
an entire crew of Local
1744 firefighters to vol-
unteer their time to
come in and make sure
the open house, and
other events during the
year, is a success.

nity, Campbell said.
Its all volunteer, but
this open house is the
big one. Honestly, we
kind of came together as
a union and said, its all
volunteer, but its man-
datory. Its that impor-
tant to us. We just love
being able to show the
residents what we do
and talk to them.
Doughnuts, cider, pop-
corn, plastic firefighter
helmets, and more were
all part of the four-hour
open house event.
My son got to sit in the
drivers seat of a fire en-
gine, Stephen Morris
said. Hes 6-years old. It
doesnt get much better
than that for a six-year
old boy. Its really great
these guys and girls do
this for the kids.
The open house is
geared for the kids, com-
plete with the opportuni-
ty to use a real firehose,
build a fire-safety related
craft, make their way
through a simulated
house filled with fake
smoke, and rub elbows
with the firefighters
themselves.
Its a way for us to say
thank you to the commu-
nity, too, Campbell said.
Thank you for their sup-
port on millages, all of the
things they do for us. And
it really makes all of us
happy to see these little
kids smiling from ear-to-
ear, too.
The open house is a tra-
dition at the department,
but the event has evolved,
Campbell said.
We start putting this to-
gether in July, he ex-
plained. We want to
make this as good as pos-
sible for everyone, but we
also want to make sure we
take the opportunity to get
the message out regarding
fire prevention and fire
safety. Thats what this is
really about. Today is the
first day of fire prevention
week. We want to educat-
ed people.
Campbell was quick to
point out that without the
cooperation of the city,
and fire department offi-
cials such as chief George
Moorehouse, none of it
would be possible.
The city has been
great, and the chief
couldnt be any more sup-
portive to us, he said.
Although its technically
brought to residents by
the union, its really a joint
event between the city, the
department and the
union. It takes everyone to
make it a success. Its
good for us, for the city
and the department. But
most importantly, its good
for the citizens. They get
to enjoy some cider and
doughnuts, some popcorn
and they get to have a
good time and see where
their tax dollars go.
Its a party, youth ser-
vices librarian Liz
Dwerek said. Its a
Halloween party right
here at the library, and
the teens really enjoy it.
The 2014 Teen
Halloween Party is
drawing near, and regis-
tration for the popular
teen function begins on
Monday, Oct. 13.
The event is slated for
6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct.
30, at the library.
The teens really enjoy
this party, Dwerek said.
Most of them are
dressed in costumes, but
its not required. Its just
a few hours where they
can talk, interact and
have fun. Its something
they look forward to all
year.
The party is sponsored
by the Friends of the
Library and the librarys
Teen Advisory Board.
The Teen Advisory
Board really does most
of the organizing and the
planning, she ex-
plained. Its something
that is totally there, real-
ly.
Games, treats and
more is already planned
for the event, Dwerek
said.
Theres going to be
some activities, some
games, and theres going
to be a costume contest,
Dwerek said. And then,
of course, theres going
to be treats and refresh-
ments, too.
The Halloween party is
open to teens from grade
six and up, Dwerek said,
and both residents and
non-residents are wel-
come to attend.
As long as you let us
know youre coming, we
would love to see you
here, she said. We do
require a reservation for
this, just so we can try
and plan out how much
food to have there.
Scavenger hunts are
also on the agenda for
the party.
The teens really sat
down and have been try-
ing to put together activi-
ties they thought would
be a lot of fun, she said.
We, the librarians, we
help plan it a little bit,
and we usually have a
few ideas we throw out
there, but overall, its
their party.
Dwerek is on hand to
make sure the party runs
smoothly.
I think we kind of
oversee it more than
anything, she ex-
plained. We get the sup-
plies, make sure things
are moving forward in
terms of activities. We
come up with the ques-
tions for the games,
things like that. I enjoy it.
Its a good time.

St. Clair Shores
Lakeview was in for a
battle in last weeks
Ma c o mb Ar e a
Conference White
Division game at Grosse
Pointe South.
The Huskies won the
first battle on their turf,
using a fast, energetic of-
fense. They forced the is-
sue and the Blue Devils
couldnt keep up.
This was a different
story from the opening
whistle and in the end,
the Huskies came away
with a 3-2 defeat.
We knew Grosse
Pointe South would be
ready for us and we didnt
respond very well, head
coach Simon Miners
said. We had too much
chatter on the field and
didnt play a good game.
Its our own fault and
we need to see what
were made of because
we have some big games
in the final week of the
regular season.
The Huskies never led
in this game, but tied it
twice after trailing by a
goal.
The Blue Devils scored
at the 31:20 mark, but 90
seconds later, senior Kyle
Huyghe scored to tie it,
1-1.
It was 2-1 South at the
29:30 mark, but six min-
utes later, junior August
Hunter scored on a pen-
alty kick to once again tie
the game.
Both teams cooled off
after the four-goal burst
and turned the game into
a defensive battle.
They each had scoring
chances, but neither
team could mount much
of a consistent offensive
attack until late in the
second half when the
Blue Devils scored to win
the game.
Despite the loss,
Lakeview is in contention
for the MAC White
Division title with three
games left.
Lakeview is 6-2-1 in
the MAC White Division
and 9-3-1 overall.

Say hello to LuLu. This little sweetheart was left on
the streets to fend for herself because her family just
up and left one day, neighbors said. Luckily, she was
brought into Mutts of Motown and given a second
chance at happiness. However, she needs to find a
loving forever home to make that happen. LuLu is
friendly with people, but would prefer to be the only
dog in the house. She likes to be the queen of the
house and doesnt care to share her throne. A house
with older children would be ideal, as is the case with
many small dogs. LuLu suffers from epilepsy, but
medication controls her seizures, and she has a thy-
roid issue that can also be well managed with medi-
cation. These medications are inexpensive so please
dont let that be a deterrent to giving LuLu a loving
forever home with you. For more information on
LuLu, call Mutts of Motown at (586) 690-2808.

Saturday, Oct. 25, at the li-
brary the creating will be-
gin again as the
Halloween Spooktacular
craft event gets underway.
Its going to be a lot of
fun for the kids, youth
services librarian Liz
Dwerek said. Were going
to have two crafts this year
for them to make.
These crafts, a ghost
and a mummy, are suit-
able for children of all ag-
es.
Kids of all ages should
be able to make these
crafts, she said.
Especially if they get
some help from mom or
dad or an adult. But even if
they dont, these are really
designed for all ages.
Theres no charge for
the event, and no reserva-
tions are needed.
Just show up and be
ready to make these
crafts, Dwerek said.
Thats it.
Another draw to this
particular event it the abili-
ty the children have to
trick-or-treat at various lo-
cations throughout the li-
brary.
Its one of the more
popular craft events we
have every year, she ex-
plained. I think last year
we had 80 or so kids show
up, and I hope we get at
least that many this year,
too.

There are a lot of perks
to my job.
I get to meet amazing
people every day, often at
amazing events and hap-
penings all over town.
I get to peer through the
lens of a camera and cap-
ture a smile, an emotion, a
moment, and freeze it for-
ever in a picture.
When I show people the
images there is usually a
smile .
Making people smile is
not, believe me, the worst
gig on the planet.
Im blessed to be able to
do it, and even more hon-
ored to be able to do it in
St. Clair Shores a town
where I spent much of my
childhood and adult life.
There is one assign-
ment, however, that I par-
ticularly enjoy.
Its homecoming.
This year, I spent much
of my time at Lake Shore
High School, with the dis-
tricts amazing staff, stu-
dents and alumni.
It began with the pep as-
sembly on Friday after-
noon a school spirit-
filled energy-fest com-
plete with a pie-eating
contest, a tug-o-war,
cheerleading demonstra-
tions, music and more.
Then came the parade,
which proudly marched
its way from the middle
school to the football field.
Meanwhile, Lake Shore
staff worked diligently to
get staff and alumni tents
set up before the game, ta-
bles and raffle tickets
ready to go, and to make
sure everything was in
place for the big game.
By the time the parade
rolled into the stadium, ev-
erything inside the gate
was ready cookies, cof-
fee and other goodies
were set out for everyone
to enjoy.
Similar things were
happening at South Lake
High School.
Fans started streaming
in at Lake Shore not long
after 6 p.m.
Most came wearing
their red shirts, and even-
tually these Shorians sup-
porters took a seat in the
stands and watched the
team battle its way to a 49-
14 victory over Center
Line High School.
Homecoming court
members proudly walked
with parents and guard-
ians to rousing applause
at halftime.
A king and queen were
named, and even stole a
kiss from one another to
celebrate the memory.
The dance followed on
Saturday night, and once
again the energy from the
students was up-lifting.
Despite the ideals many
have about todays high
school students, the stu-
dents at Lake Shore and
South Lake high schools
were well behaved and re-
spectful, upbeat, and they
were all simply having
fun.
Just as I expect they will
be at Lakeview this week-
end.
As I left South Lakes
gymnasium late Saturday,
after spending a couple of
hours at Lake Shore and
time at South Lake as well
that night, it struck me
how fortunate the resi-
dents of St. Clair Shores
are for having such a great
collection of school dis-
tricts right in town.
For a guy like me to en-
joy these few days so
much, thats a reflection of
the people who educate
your children.
Its the culmination of
the efforts of administra-
tors, teachers, support
staff, and everyone in-
volved in the process.
Its not about test scores
or placement exams.
Its not about state fund-
ing or millages.
Instead, homecoming is
about the intangibles of
education.
Its about teaching your
kids how to enjoy life once
in a while, and do it re-
spectfully with friends.
Its my favorite assign-
ment of the year because
its a chance for me see
firsthand the great work
being done at all three
high schools. The dedica-
tion, pride and passion
these educators and staff
members have for these
students is inspiring.
And then theres the stu-
dents, who have such an
energy about them, an en-
thusiasm that makes you
smile when you watch
them enjoying this memo-
ry-in-the-making.
There are a lot of perks
to my job, but few are
more rewarding for me
than homecoming.

1B AUTOMOTIVE | 1-3B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2014
he Equus
luxury sedan
from Korean
automaker
Hyundai is
so talented you may con-
sider inviting it in to see
what it could do to help
around the house.
For example, approach-
ing the Equus at night and
pressing the unlock button
on its fob causes the flat-
folded outside mirrors to
gently swing out while a
light under each illumi-
nates the ground around
the car. And voila - the
glove you lost earlier in the
day, or a sliver of black ice.
Powered by a direct-in-
jection 429 horsepower
5.0-liter V-8, the rear-drive
Equus promises to deliver
smooth power at all
speeds minus any lag-and-
surge. The transmission is
an eight-speed automatic.
Our test Equus was an
Ultimate model with a
$68,000 price tag. The
Equus Premium runs
$61,000.
As one could expect, the
Ultimate comes with a
long list of added fea-
tures including a supersize
12.3-inch instrument clus-
ter display, a multi-view
camera system, forward-
view camera, two-screen
rear-seat entertainment
system with adjustable
screens, cooled rear seats,
power rear window sun-
shades and rear-seat pow-
er headrests. Sorry, no tea
trays or massage elements
for lucky back-seaters.
But, says Hyundai, rear
passengers can search res-
taurant locations and pro-
vide navigation system di-
rections directly to the
drivers navigation screen,
making them the ultimate
rear-seat drivers.
Standard Equus fea-
tures include cutting-edge
stability and braking sys-
tems, Hyundai Blue Link
telematics, power reclin-
ing heated rear seats, a
navigation system, power
sunroof, power rear-win-
dow sunshade, windshield
wiper de-icers, rain-sens-
ing wipers and an auto-de-
fogging windshield. The
driver can choose between
normal and sport modes:
comfort for the former,
control for the latter.
Hyundai has added a
snow driving mode to
help on wintry roads.
Rear cross-traffic alert
and blind spot detection
are standard on Equus.
For a vehicle with the ul-
timate in good looks and
up-to-the-minute features,
the Equus disappointed by
not reminding us its key
fob was still in the car
when we had turned it off
and closed the doors after
parking. A simple beep
would be appreciated for
the distracted.
And obviously it is not
the most conscientious car
with respect to fuel con-
sumption. We think its 15
miles per gallon city econ-
omy leaves lots to be de-
sired. Equus is rated at 23
mpg highway for a com-
bined average of 18.
Compared with similar
cars, it earned a 4 out of 10
in fuel economy and
greenhouse gas scale and
was mid-way on the mea-
surement of worst-to-best
smog rating.
Hyundais five-year/un-
limited roadside assis-
tance is standard on the
Equus as is no-cost main-
tenance for three years or
36,000 miles with valet de-
livery service.
Equus Signature and
Ultimate buyers benefit
from the following fea-
tures standard for all
Equus models: blind spot
detection, smart cruise
control, LED fog lamps,
rear cross-traffic alert,
proximity key entry, Blue
Link telematics capability,
navigation system with
9.2-inch screen and three-
zone climate control.
Equus is built in Ulsan,
South Korea, using 85 per-
cent Korean parts content
including engine and
transmission.
King is an automotive

of Grosse Pointe.

The 2014 Hyundai Equus covers its 429-horsepower potential with a sleek skin.
The Equus interior treats rear passengers like royal-
ty with two video screens, heated and reclining
leather seats and personal infotainment controls.
The Ultimate features a 12.3-inch instrument
cluster display.
