Statement of Purpose Water Quality Chemical and Treatment Mazen Abdo Alqadi

My purpose is to obtain Master of Science Degree in Water Quality at KAUST. My decision to
pursue graduate study in Saudi Arabia is underscored by my desire to be part of the graduate
program at your renowned institution, which offers the support and the research facilities needed
for such an important and challenging field. During my four years at the University Technology
Malaysia (UTM), I have gained the qualifications and work ethic necessary to be a successful
graduate student. My undergraduate background has given me the desire, the experience, and the
knowledge to continue my higher education.

I grew up in a society having a real water problem. Women have to search for water from far
sources and carry it home on their head. This kind of living difficulty is caused by the absence of
sufficient water resource management. This situation gave me the initial motive to choose water
quality to be my future career.

I performed excellently in the various courses I credited during my undergraduate study. My
overall CPA is 3.63 out of 4. I have been most interested in environmental engineering, especially
in the water related subjects. And to satisfy my urge in exploring deeper into water and
environment, I took most of the available subjects related to these areas such as fluid mechanics,
hydraulics, water treatment, waste water treatment, hydrology, environmental management and
advance water and waste water treatment engineering. Throughout these subjects I have gained
the knowledge about atmospheric processes (rainfall, evaporation demand, etc.), land-surface
processes (runoff, evapotranspiration, soil water storage, etc.) and sub-surface processes
(groundwater recharge and discharge) as well as geomorphological, chemical, biochemical,
microbiological and ecological (biology and zoology) processes. I also took the environmental
laboratory experiments which were among the civil engineering laboratory I, II, and III content.

I chose my final year project to be related to water and environment. The title of it was Removal
of Micropollutants by Coagulation. The objectives of my thesis were; to determine the effect of
pH, type and dosage of coagulant on the removal of organic micropollutants in coagulation
process; to compare the effect of the above mentioned removal in removing micropollutants and
turbidity; and to evaluate the effect of coagulation process in the properties of the micropollutants
with regard to their hydrophobicity. My work was supervised by the head of environmental

department in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azmi Aris. I completed my thesis
excellently and in time with grad A- (3.67 / 4). It worth mentioning that my academic advisor for
the four years at UTM, was Professor Zulkifli Yosup who is the dean of water research alliance in
UTM. He enhanced my desire to specialize in water recourse science and manage.

As you can see in my curriculum vitae (CV), I was an active student in my undergraduate. I led
some departments, organised and participated in various academic and social events and attend
some conferences and seminars.

After completing my master program, I would like to continue my education by obtaining Ph.D.
degree as my dream is to be a professor. This will enable me to secure my career as professionals
in government, business, industry, education and in the non-profit sector.

In conclusion, I believe that, the MS program at KAUST fits my academic needs and professional
goal. I consider it a wonderful chance to work with the excellent academic group at KAUST. I
believe that my undergraduate program has provided me with the necessary dedication,
persistence, and discipline to be a successful graduate student. I am confident that I possess the
motivation, the intellectual ability, and the preparation to do justice to a demanding Graduate
program and to make significant contributions to the postgraduate study at King Abdullah
University of Science and Technology. I appeal to the Graduate Admissions Committee to
consider me for admission, and financial aid.
