STORY:

The Somali President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has applauded the Ugandan
government for the significant investment into supporting the stabilization
process in his country.

He made the comments while presiding over celebrations to mark Ugandas 52
nd

Independence Day anniversary in Mogadishu, hosted by the Ugandan
Ambassador to Somalia Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha.

The event attracted several foreign dignitaries including the UN Special
Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, Senior
members of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), representatives of
various governments in Mogadishu, senior members of the Somali government
and its security institutions, among others.

The celebrations were held under the theme: Unity, peace, security and regional
integration: key pillars for true and sustainable independence.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Ugandan Ambassador to Somalia Maj. Gen.
Nathan Mugisha explained the historic relations the two countries have enjoyed,
from the time Somali forces together with Tanzania helped Uganda during its
period of instability in the late 1970s, to the current mission when the favor is
being returned.

Today, Uganda marks 52 years since she gained her independence on the 9
th

October 1962. The journey for Uganda to become a free society has been long
and odious. We greatly appreciate all those whose great effort contributed
towards Uganda regaining her freedom, among other states, he said.

He expressed confidence that Somalia is on the right path for development,
cautioning that the peacebuilding mission will require a holistic approach,
especially incorporating the countrys youths and ensuring that the challenges
they face today, such as widespread unemployment, lack of access to education,
high levels of poverty, among others are addressed.

The Somali President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud explained the historic
relations the two countries have enjoyed; thanking the Ugandan President H.E
Yoweri Museveni for having made the ultimate sacrifice in deploying his troops
to Somalia in 2007, at a time when the world thought the situation could not be
salvaged.

Congratulations to H.E the President and the people of Uganda for the 52
nd

anniversary of their independence. We all are proud of the development,
progress and prosperity Uganda has achieved in the last decades. It is one of the
role models that this region has and we will continue to follow them, and I
appreciate and I say again, congratulations to Uganda.

Ambassador Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha hosted his guests to a sumptuous cocktail
as part of the celebrations.

End.
