everal years into my study of the medicine wheel, I became famil-
iar with Jody Bergsamas visionary artwork. I had been writing
greeting card verses, and had received several of Jodys Natural
Elements cards as gifts from friends. Amazingly, the images and
messages of her cards always seemed to reflect developments in my
own spiritual life. I had tremendous admiration for Jodys ability to
capture so much emotion, strength, beauty, and power in her images.
What an incredible gift Creator had given her to share with the
world. I sent Jody some of my verses and was honored to receive her
reply letter asking if she could keep one of my prayer verses. She also
sent me a card of hers with an image of wolves titled Nothing can

hold back a dream. That card became my guiding inspiration to con-
tinue pursuing my dreams as a writer.
While designing Spirit of the Wheel, I thought about how won-
derful it would be if Jody illustrated the cards. This idea seemed like
an impossible dream since she was a well-established artist. But after
writing this booklet, I decided to follow my intuition and send it off
to her. I heard from her shortly after, and our partnership began.
Soon after receiving a call of interest from U.S. Games Systems,
Inc. I was blessed to spend my 40th birthday picking out the images
for Spirit of the Wheel deck. When I look back now, I believe the cre-
ation of this deck was truly meant to be. The first image we chose for
medicine wheel was the painting which Jody had taped my prayer to
six years earlier. The synchronicity continued as we developed the
deck. Each of the 40 cards was to represent one of the stones placed
upon the medicine wheel. From Jodys collection of paintings we
were able to find the perfect image to reflect each cards unique
meaning, symbolism, prophecy, and prayer. The placement of stones
upon the wheel and also the representations of the natural yearly
cycles were captured perfectly by the animals, seasonal colors, sym-
bols and elements in her images.

Jodys artwork, particularly her Natural Elements collection,
portrays a message of spiritual oneness and sacred connection to all
of creation. This was to be the most important message I wanted to
convey in the Spirit of the Wheel deck. By better understanding our
place within this world, and recognizing on a spiritual level our con-
nection to all living things, I believe we can truly begin to live our
lives in a healthy, abundant manner. The medicine wheel teaches us
of this deep connectionof the interwoven fabric of Creation that
links us to all of our relations. Spirit of the Wheel was created as a
tool to access the wisdom and teachings of the medicine wheel. Both
Jody and I hope that you find it useful for your growth and healing.

INTRODUCTION
L
ife is a circular journey involving birth, death, and rebirth on a
mental, emotional, spiritual, and (eventually) physical level. For
centuries, the wheel has provided a sacred tool to better understand
this journey. This sacred space has also been used over the years for
prayer work, guidance, healing, and meditation-as well as for person-
al and group ceremony.
In moments of quiet reflection, when we sit at the center of the
wheel, we are given the opportunity to connect with Creator and
view our lives from a higher perspective. Here, we begin to under-
stand how each spirit pathway brings us the knowledge and experi-
ence necessary to move around each direction we take in life.
As we move around the wheel we discover that there are many

spirit helpers to aid us on our journey. The animal totems, plants and
minerals, colors, and directional meanings help us along our way.
The ancestors, seasons, and cycles of Grandmother Moon can also
assist us to better understand our own existence. The wheel is a
sacred space for us to contemplate, to gather with others, to share, to
pray, and to heal within the powers of creation.
The Spirit of the Wheel cards create an accessible method for
exploring and applying these energies. The 40-card deck features
beautiful illustrations representing the individual stones and their
meanings within the wheel. Each card incorporates breathtaking
imagery of animals, symbols, colors, and the seasons to reflect the
energy and spirit of the wheel. Keywords summarize the meanings
and placement of the stone upon the wheel. Together these evocative
images and messages provide a way of discovering the different
aspects of the medicine wheel, its lessons, and wisdom. This booklet
provides more detailed interpretations of each card, and features
both a prophecy and a prayer for each. The prophecies help you real-
ize the specific areas of potential growth and directions for change.
The suggested prayers may be used as daily affirmations to enhance
this personal growth.
This deck is also a beautiful tool for self-growth and spiritual
enlightenment. The cards may be read individually or within the
unique spreads described in this booklet.
Once you begin to work with the wheel you will be amazed at
the potential for spiritual growth it contains. You may also find won-
derfully enlightening surprises along the way.
As you embark upon this journey remember that everyone is
born to a potentiala gift from Creator to be developed and shared.
The powers of the wheel are there to help you recognize and better
understand how you can contribute and evolve through its lessons.
Every lesson, no matter how large or insignificant, contributes to the

whole self. My hope is that Spirit of the Wheel will used as a divine
tool for self-growth and the development of your true potential.
CREATION OF THE WHEEL
T
he medicine wheel is placed on a vortex, which is an area of high
energy. Each of the stones placed upon the wheel contributes to
its energy and balance. The vortex itself is sometimes aligned with
the constellations above to increase the vibration of energy moving
through the wheel.
A wheel is never built alone. The energies of Creator, the ances-
tors, the animal totems, and the spirits all play a part in its creation.
The Creator stone is placed upon the center of the wheel and marks
the beginning of the wheels existence. From this point, all energy
flows to the other stones upon the wheel, eventually returning to the
Creator stone. From Creator come the next seven stones which form
the inner circle: Mother Earth, Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, and
the four Clans; Turtle, Frog, Thunderbird, and the Butterfly clan. The
Turtle represents the element of earth; the Frog, water; the
Thunderbird, fire; and the Butterfly represents the element of air.
The four directions North (Waboose), East (Wabun), South
(Shawdonese), and West (Mudjekeewis) form the outer basis of the

Power Stones

wheel. From the directions flow the moonstones. Each of these
moonstones has a mineral, plant, animal, and element associated
with it as well as the season of the direction it falls under. There is also
a rare blue moon or thirteenth moon which represents two full
moons occurring within the same cycle. The spirit pathways are the
lessons associated with each particular direction, and they comprise
the final stones to complete the wheel. There are three spirit path
stones placed in each direction and they lead us back to the Creator
stone at the center of the wheel.
The Spirit of the Wheel deck includes three other cards I am
referring to as the power stones. The stone of Self represents our per-
sonal growth and can be moved to different points upon the wheel to
reflect where we are at any given time. If, for example, we are seeking
the individual guidance of a pathway, moon, or direction, we can
move our stone to this area to absorb the energy, guidance, and wis-
dom there. Once we have asked permission from the spirits in this
area we may remove this stone and carry it with us to help us inte-
grate its energies. If we are using the Spirit of the Wheel cards we may
place our card on an altar or any visible place to be reminded of its
message. The next power stone, called the Stone of the Ancestors,
helps us in times of choice to remain on the path that is aligned with
our higher purpose.
The final power stone is the stone of the Great Star Nation. This
stone is a link to the mystery void, where we may retrieve the knowl-
edge necessary to better understand and develop our gifts. The void
has also been referred to as the akashic records or place of remem-
brance. The three power stones can be placed anywhere within the
wheel or carried beyond the wheel. In addition to the traditional thir-

ty-six stones, you may add more of your own stones. Trust your intu-
ition and the spiritual messages around you.
The wheel turns in a clockwise direction and begins in the East
so we should always enter the wheel in the East and move in a clock-
wise direction. In the East we experience new beginnings and
encounter the inspiration and clarity to plant the seeds for our
tomorrows. As we move to the South we take this a step further.
Through our hard work and determination we nurture not only the
seed, but also the soil around it.
By the end of the season, as we move toward the West, we see our
work pay off as our flower blooms into the light of day and we har-
vest our own self-worth. As the days of summer grow shorter and we
move into the full power of the West, new visions begin to stir as the
petals of our flower fall upon the wheel.
Shortly after the snow falls, as we journey to the North, we are
given the chance to purify the self by reflecting and internalizing the
knowledge we have gained. The guided meditations in the following
section will visually situate you within the energy of the wheel, and

will help familiarize you with the meanings of each direction.
DIRECTIONS WITHIN THE WHEEL
F
or each direction you choose to explore, you may follow an
established ritual. Begin by visualizing yourself entering your
medicine wheel and finding a comfortable place to sit. Then call
upon the spirit powers of the direction chosen to guide and protect
you on this journey. When you are ready, thank the spirit powers and
ancestors for this experience and for their wisdom, guidance, and
protection. As you exit the wheel and return to your normal waking
state, know that you are safe within this wheel and may return at any
time.
JOURNEY WITHIN THE EAST
As you feel the presence of the ancestors around you, notice
the sun beginning to rise above the mountain in the distance. It is a
cool but comfortable spring morning and you notice new shoots
growing up from the ground.
Imagine yourself journeying now to the top of a cliff. The climb

is easy, yet exhilarating. As you reach the peak you feel a soft wind
blowing your hair ever so slightly. The air feels different here, as it is
clearer and healthier. Since the East is represented by the element of
air, spend a few moments now breathing in the air of the East and
feeling the wind caress your face.
As the sun moves a little higher in the sky, let your senses fill up
with the color yellow, the color of the East. Watch as it paints the
landscape and permeates your very being.
Above, you hear the cry of the majestic eagle, inviting you to
take flight and spend some quiet time soaring on the wings of the
East.
Return now to your comfortable place upon the wheel. Thank
eagle for taking you along. The East is the place of new beginnings
the place we go when we are seeking clarity, wisdom and illumina-
tion. Spend some time now reflecting on your journey. Consider
what areas of your life may currently be influenced by the East. If
you wish to begin anew in some area of your life ask the East for the
guidance you need.
JOURNEY WITHIN THE SOUTH
As you feel the presence of the ancestors, you notice a campfire
burning in the distance. As you journey toward it you feel the heat of
the midday sun. The ground is somewhat dry, yet the wildflowers are
in bloom and the berries are getting plump. As you approach the fire,
your own emotions rise within like the flames. Your pores are open-
ing from the heat and your whole being feels transformed. You feel
vulnerable, yet full of life and passion. You know you must trust and
have faith in the spirit guides around you. The South is represented
by the element of fire. As you reach the firepit spend a few moments
imagining yourself like a phoenix bird dancing in the light of the

flame. You are safe and the flame does not burn nor harm you. In this
moment it gives you the opportunity to let go of all negative emotion
and fill your heart with unconditional love.
As you dance, imagine the color red, the color of passion and
emotion swirling around you. This flame fills you with the desire to
grow and move beyond the self-imposed boundaries that have kept
you from your true path.
The South is the place of growth, trust, and love, so open your
heart to the healthy glow of the flame and allow your whole self to be
transformed into the loving being that you are meant to be.
JOURNEY WITHIN THE WEST
As you feel the presence of the ancestors all around you, notice
the sun is settling behind the mountain in the far distance. The cool
evening air leaves a gentle ripple on the lake before you. Even as the
sky is darkening, the brilliant colors of autumn shimmer and glow
around the lake. The West is represented by the element of water. It
is the direction we turn to for reflection upon our dreams and
visions.
Spend some time now meditating on your own and listening to
the haunting cry of the loon. Watch as images of your dreams and
visions emerge from the watery depths below.
Imagine every ripple on the waters surface representing anoth-
er dream or potential you have yet to actualize. The West is where we
go to nurture, develop, and honor our creative nature. This is the gift
of the West. Notice the night sky above you now and how the stars
seem to form a maze. Allow yourself to be pulled into the darkness
beyond the stars. Black, the color of the West, represents the magical
void where we are stripped of our earthly ties and given the opportu-
nity to blend into the universe. Study the sky. Allow the magic of the
void to bring you the dreams and visions that are most important for

your higher growth at this time.
JOURNEY WITHIN THE NORTH
As you begin to feel the presence of the spirits around you,
imagine it is wintertime. You are in a forest and the air is very still.
The sun is shining above, keeping off the winter chill and leaving
sparkling reflections on the snows surface.
The North is represented by the element of earth so you will feel
unusually grounded here, as if cradled in the womb of the Earth
Mother. Off in the distance you notice something moving slowly
toward you. As it reaches the edge of the mountain before you, its
incredible presence takes form. It is the sacred white buffalo. Her
breath is like a gentle mist rising toward heaven. She holds the wis-
dom of the North like a chalice within the center of her being. She
offers you the gifts of innocence and purity. Take some time now to
allow the wisdom of this majestic creature to flow through you.
The color of the North is white. Imagine now the brilliant white
light of Great Spirit shining down upon you. As it merges with the
white of the snow allow this light to completely envelop you. Feel its
warmth and divine inspiration. Acknowledge that you are first and
foremost a spiritual being that has taken on form in this lifetime in
order to grow, learn, share, teach, and to love others. This is the wis-
dom of the North. Allow your spirit to shine forth and feel the over-

whelming comfort and peace that is growing within you.
READING THE
SPIRIT OF THE WHEEL CARDS
MEDICINE WHEEL ~ 0
Keywords: oneness, inner growth, contemplation
Prophecy: Put all other areas of your life on hold and journey to the
center of the wheel. Here you will find the sacred space to become
one with the Creator and pray for the guidance and healing you need.
This is a time of quiet contemplation and inner growth. Rest your
body, mind, and spirit, and gather up the energy needed to move on
to the next stage upon the wheel. Being at the center of the wheel
offers a higher perspective on where youve been and the direction
you are heading toward. The Medicine Wheel card is a reminder to
look for teachings in all areas of your life. It may come in the form of
a phrase in a book, a cloud formation, or even a conversation with a

stranger.
Use this time wisely and remember to pray not only for your
own path, but for all of Great Spirits creations. For if our prayers
carry the highest of intentions, when the timing is right, we will be
given the opportunity to move forward once again.
Prayer: Here at the center of the wheel I look to you, Great Spirit, to
help me better understand my place in this life. To learn to see how I
fit into the fabric of creation, and to honor your gifts by sharing them
with others.
CREATOR ~ 1
Keywords: awareness, co-creation, change
Prophecy: The Creator card brings a period of examining your faith
and values. There is a strong desire for change and redirection in your
life. Here, you are given the gift of awareness. A hidden truth may be
revealed to you, or a new understanding unveiled to you in the near
future. This newfound information will bring about necessary
changes. Connect with the oneness of Great Spirit through your
prayers and beliefs. Co-create the hopes and dreams you have envi-
sioned by experiencing change, and letting go of whatever is no
longer serving your highest good. The Creator card is a gentle
reminder that if you have faith in Great Spirit and yourself, you can
overcome any obstacle towards change. Having faith in the great
mystery allows the necessary changes to unfold.
Prayer: With the greatest of honor I open myself to the complete truth of
who I am. I trust, Great Spirit, that you will assist me on my path. Help
me to build my dreams and develop my potential for the higher good.

MOTHER EARTH ~ 2
Keywords: creative feminine source, nurturing, birth
Prophecy: The Mother Earth card asks that you open yourself to feel
the complete truth of your life. You must be willing to experience the
painful as well as the joyful moments to fully emerge. Reaching that
magical point of renewal allows the heart to expand toward the light.
Through the expression of our emotions we are able to tap into
our true feminine nature and appreciate our connection to all living
things. We learn to properly nurture ourselves and become the caretak-
ers that we are naturally meant to be. Open up and allow your heart
room to grow. When we allow ourselves to give birth to our emotions
we learn to truly honor the creative feminine source within us.
Prayer: I call upon the energies of Mother Earth to help me to accept
and express my true feminine nature. I honor all beings with the gift of
motherly compassion that is innate within me.
FATHER SUN ~ 3
Keywords: direction, illumination, active growth
Prophecy: The Father Sun card represents a period of active growth.
The energy around you at this time is bountiful. If you use it wisely,
directing it toward future goals, your progress will be great.
Set boundaries, be assertive, and direct the changes you are work-
ing towards. The Sun card illuminates the shadow side of the self and
the path of coming into your own power. Sometimes these realizations
can be painful and require some sacrifice. Clear the way for progress to
occur. Even though the path to enlightenment can be a real challenge
at times, with the suns energy you can conquer your fears through the

process of self-illumination. Now is the perfect time to do so.
The sun is a reminder that each of us has opportunities every-
day to make a difference in the world. Shine your light on others and
help them to see more clearly.
Prayer: Help me, Great Spirit, to recognize my own inner light so that
I may project positive loving energy out into the world and work
towards achieving my goals with clear direction.
GRANDMOTHER MOON ~ 4

Prophecy: Trust your instincts when it comes to matters of the heart.
Just as Grandmother Moon moves through different stages to com-
plete her cycle, you, too, can learn to follow the natural rhythms of
your own body.
Take a look at your life. Are you at the seed stage of a relation-
ship or project? If so, call upon the energies of Grandmother Moon
to help you see it through to completion. Now is the opportune time
for you to explore your bodys own natural rhythms.
If you are working in a creative field, discover your peak produc-
tive moments by becoming one with the creative power within you.
Your psychic abilities are strengthening now so pay close attention to
the messages around you. Grandmother Moon offers the gift of self-
reflection. Take the time now to delve into your inner self so you can
learn to make the most of your natural creative rhythms.
Prayer: I take the necessary time to learn of my bodys natural rhythms.
I honor you, Grandmother Moon, for teaching me to become one with
the creative power within me.

TURTLE CLAN ~ 5
Keywords: grounding, steady progress, solidity
Prophecy: The Turtle Clan card augers a time of slow and steady
progress. Do not be concerned that nothing much is happening out-
wardly at this time. You will reach your goal when the time is right.

we have on that armor on then we can never fully love.

SACRED PIPE SPREAD
The Sacred Pipe spread consists of the bowl and the stem. The bowl
is considered the female element and consists of cards 1 through 4.
The stem is considered the male part of the pipe and consists of cards
5 through to 8.
In ceremony, the bowl and stem of the pipe were joined together to
represent the divine union. The ceremonial smoking of the pipe is
considered a very sacred ritual whereby our prayers are carried on the
smoke to Creator. The white buffalo calf woman brought the sacred
pipe to the people so they would have a way to pray to Creator. She
also taught them the seven sacred ceremonies.

The pipe itself is known as the white buffalo calf pipe. White buffalo
calf woman promised to return one day and so the legend goes that
the birth of three white buffalo calves represents the return of femi-
nine energy to heal and nurture Mother Earth.

have completed the spiral,

slightly above the cards
and retrace the spiral very
slowly in a clockwise
motion asking Creator for the divine guidance you are seeking.
Stop your hand whenever it feels right and turn over the card just
