Stage Presence

This weeks voice entry is about Stage Presence, which from here out we will just
call SP. You might be thinking that Ok, this is supposed to be about our voice,
how to improve, etc., SP has nothing to do with thatwrong..just as air is the
fuel that feeds your vocal engine, SP is the Octane Booster to your gift.

So..we sing for God.how dare we talk about SP in the church. We dare. As
long as SP is not about hey look at us, but is used in lifting Him up, and bringing
Honor to Him, it has a very real place on the praise and worship stage.

Whether solo or with a group, SP has to have layers.these layers are emotional,
and physical.and the physical consist of five directions: front, back, left and
rightand up as in jump!..emotional transitions in song need not only to be
heard vocally, but should be able to be seen physically. How? Facial expressions,
body language, body movement, etc. On stage, you between 15 to 100 feet from
the congregantsdepending where they are seated. You may want to consider
making your gesticulations more pronounced, your smiles bigger, etc.

At the present timeand meaning no disrespect to anyoneit is possible to put a
24 square on the floor around each singer, and with one possible exception, you
can watch the entire set and none of the front line would move out of that. It is
not any fault of theirs; it is the former/past environment they have been raised
in.

What about front/back movement? It helps, but it is only one layer of movement,
and quite frankly, front/back movement alone is not dramatic and adds little SP.
How about turning to the singer next to you and smiling, gesturing Glory to
God!Subconciously if a congregant sees you looking sideways and engaging a
fellow singer, they will be more apt to allow themselves to look at their seat
neighbors and engage in some way. It is about bringing them into where you are
and making them just as much a part of the onstage team as you are.

Front line personnel should also always be aware of the choir. Due to their
location/position onstage, the importance of their contribution is often
subconsciously overlooked by the congregation. So front line, take a second to
turn around and engage them! By doing so you help to bring them deeper into
the praise and worship that is coming from the front of the stage, and in turn
more visually into the congregants eyes. There is great SP power that occurs
when an entire team is truly together and lifting each other up.

There is trick my father taught me when I was very young that helps in developing
great SP:

Try going an entire day without saying a word, communicating everything you
need to say through physical gesticulation, body language, and facial
expressions.

Granted, he was speaking about techniques to develop acting skills, but it
translates equally into developing SP.because if you think about it, you will
realize that no one needs great SP more than an actor.

Choir singers..you are traditionally purposely the BACKBONE and
FOUNDATION of the front line and/or soloists. The strength they can gain from
your combined voices and physicality that you as a synchronized group can
project helps to give them the confidence to stand more transparent, stronger,
with more power, on that front line. This is a team effort, and we are all.no
matter what our responsibility on stage.an integral part of that team. We do
not as a team breathe fully without the entire team..and we do not exhibit the
power of the entire team when one of us is absent

So..all well and good, but what about specific suggestions? OK..here are a
few:

Cover The Stage (within your parameters)
Large area (entire stage) or small (36 to 48 box), it is there to be used. Upstage,
downstage, stage left and stage right..all the directions are there for a reason.
Take a step to stage left and hang out for a sec, then back to your center box
mark..turn stage left some and look out.are there people sitting in an isolated
manner? Acknowledge them with a smile..cover all areas of the sanctuary
within your influence. People may not respond at first but an amazing thing
happens when you do it every service.they begin to respond, and be drawn in!

Own Your Real Estate (claim your space and use it)
When you gesticulate, gesticulate broadly and with confidence. Especially in large
areas like the Sanctuary. If you are in Married for Life and doing praise and
worship, keep your gesticulations smaller but use your body language to claim
your space.

Feel The Lyrics, Live The Lyrics
To feel the lyrics, you have to be doing your best to live the lyrics. If you can do
this honestly and authentically, the congregation will feel them too..if you are
moved, and tears flow, do not be embarrassed..but by the same token do not
force tearsDont be afraid to, within reason, let it go.if you feel like
laughing with joy, then laughjust not all of you at once lol! When you let your
emotions out, you are being transparent, and the freeing effect it can have on the
congregation is amazing.

First Connect With God, Then Connect With The Congregation!
Look the congregation in the eyedo not spend the set with your eyes closed, or
looking up/down.connect with the people. Talk to them with the singing
voice God gave you.if you open yourself to both God and the congregants
honestly and believably, they will respond.

Work It On Out
Picture the praise and worship set as a football game.you are there to win the
game, but to do so you have to fight what is happening in your life, dealing with
attacks by the enemy, at times ill health, financial problems, etc., give it all up to
God, dismiss it from your mind, and go on stage with a clear mind and joy for the
Lord in your heart., and lay it all out for the Glory of God. And you doall the
time! You are an amazing team!

Keep The energy Up
When you snooze, you lose.HOWEVER..If you dont snooze the night before,
you are not bringing it all with you.you have to bring it all with you, and leave it
all on that platform.every service! We all sometimes joke about the first service
people. But really, is the occasional lack of reaction or participation on them, or
on us? I watch the streams, and frankly, I sometimes wonder.

By the same token, sometimes it is just not going to happen, and when it does, do
not try and force it to happen! If you left everything on the platform and the
response was not there, just be joyous that that you had the opportunity to wake
and praise God, and that in a few minutes, you will get another chance!

Remember that although they might not have shown it visually or physically,
because we honored God as He asks us to, something might have been ignited in
them that is just smoldering, waiting for just one more breath of His Holy Spirit to
ignite and burn like a wildfire!

Sing To The Back Of The Sanctuary (and the front, and the sides)
Leave no area untouched! You may possibly be responsible for only one section,
one slice of the pie.whether all or a slice, give it your all!.....if you cannot leave it
all on the stage, how can you expect the congregant to leave it all on the
Sanctuary floor? Good SP encompasses the entire service.and the service
encompasses all who are here and/or watching on stream!

Thank You, Have A Blessed Day!
You are on this stage, platform, using your gifts for the glory of God and
church..when you stand here and use your gifts for His glory, you are saying to
every congregant out there Hello!...welcome to the house of God.you are my
brother/sister in Christ.you are just as much a part of this celebration as I
am.you are a worship leader as well..please freely and transparently join me in
praising Him!
