Regional Control Center (RCC) Jamshoro

RCC Stands for Regional control center.Regional Control Centre at Jamshoro is charged with
Monitoring and control of regional power System of the network for interiot sindh . The main
functions of these Power Control Centres is given below:
1. Real time control of the load generation, power exchanges, voltage regulation, generation reserves
and the transmission network;
2. Follow up of efficiency, fault analysis, compilation of statistics, reporting and accounting;
3. Short and long term planning, including load prediction, and generators, schedules, power balance
planning, coordination of unit out-ages for maintenance and planning for reserves;
4. Arranging of routine and emergent shortdowns on generators, transmission lines, power
transformers and other components of the power system.
With the passage of time, most of the equipment has become obsolete and its capacity is not
sufficient to control expanding power grid system and require up-gradation.
Main components of RCC includes the following
1.Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA)
2.Energy Management Sysetm (EMS)
3.Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
4.Mimic Board
1.Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA):
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems have traditionally played a
vital role by providing utilities with valuable knowledge and capabilities that are key to a
primary business function - delivering power in a reliable and safe manner. A quality SCADA
solution is central to effective operation of a utility's most critical and costly distribution,
transmission, and generation assets. One of key processes of SCADA is the ability to monitor an
entire system in real time. This is facilitated by data acquisitions including meter reading,
checking statuses of sensors, etc that are communicated at regular intervals depending on the
system.A well planned and implemented SCADA system not only helps utilities deliver power
reliably and safely to their customers but it also helps to lower the costs and achieve higher
customer satisfaction and retention.
There are many parts of a working SCADA system. A SCADA system usually includes signal
hardware (input and output), controllers, networks, user interface (HMI), communications
equipment and software. All together, the term SCADA refers to the entire central system. The
central system usually monitors data from various sensors that are either in close proximity or
off site (sometimes miles away). For the most part, the brains of a SCADA system are performed
by the Remote Terminal Units (sometimes referred to as the RTU).

Critical Functions of SCADA:Following functions are carried out every 2 seconds :
Switchgear Position, Transformer taps, Capacitor banks
Tie line flows and interchange schedules
Generator loads, voltage etc.,
Verification on links between computer and remote equipment

3.Energy Management system:
Energy management includes planning and operation of energy-related production and
consumption units. Objectives are resource conservation, climate protection and cost savings,
Energy Management encompasses a wide range of activities and expertise in the optimal use of
energy.
This includes the areas of:
1) Development of management strategies programmes and plans,
2) Implementation of techniques, technology and tools
3) Measurement, verification and control.

3.Remote Terminal Units (RTUs):
A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a microprocessor-controlled electronic device that
interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control system or SCADA (supervisory
control and data acquisition) system by transmitting telemetry data to a master system, and by
using messages from the master supervisory system to control connected objects. The Remote
Terminal Units consists of a programmable logic converter. The RTU are usually set to specific
requirements,However, most RTU allow human intervention, for instance, in a factory setting,
the RTU might control the setting of a conveyer belt, and the speed can be changed or
overridden at any time by human intervention. In addition, any changes or errors are usually
automatically logged for and/or displayed.

4.Mimic Board:
A panel simulating the geographical layout of a television studio, railway points system,
traffic interchange, etc, in which small indicator lamps display the selected state of the lighting
circuits.
Functions of mimic board
1.A schematic mimic on the front representing the system being controlled
2.Lamps and indicators to show the status and position of all the elements
3.Switches to control and change the status of these plant items
4.Alarm annunciators and fault recording equipment
5.Full internal wiring, and equipment mounted on the front and internally.
