C. Setting the Classroom

Before you take your seats, please pick-up the
pieces of paper under your chairs and maintain
the aisle on the middle. Turn off your mobile
phones and remove unnecessary things on your
table.

You may now take your seats

D. Checking of Attendance:

Is anyone absent from the class? Say present if
you are here ( the teacher will consult the seat
plan and do roll call of students name)

E. Recall
What did we discuss last time?

Good Morning Teacher!

( the student will stand in
front of the class) Let us
all bow our heads and
feel the presence of the
Lord.
Glory be to the Father
and to the Son and to the
Holy Spirit. As it was in
the beginning is now, and
ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.

(The students will do what the
teacher said.)

(Students will take their seats
properly.)

(The students will say present.)

Last meeting, we discuss about
the different types of bodies of
water. We learned that river,

Well said. You may now take your seat.

F. Motivation
Before we proceed, lets have first an activity. I
need your cooperation to make this activity
happen.
This activity is entitled Tic-Tac-Movie. A tic-
tac-toe board will be presented containing clips
from different movies. What you have to do is
to guess the title of the movie. There are five
tiles for you to guess to complete the pattern X.
Anyone can answer, just raise your hand. Are
my instructions clear?

Okay, now lets start the game. For our first
picture, guess what movie is this?

Thats correct. For our next picture, What is the
title of this movie?

Thats right. Then for our third picture.

Wise guess, you are correct. And for our fourth
picture, we have a picture

Thats right, then for our fifth picture,

Thats correct. Thank you for all your answers.

IV. Lesson Proper

Class, what have you noticed with the pictures
that we see earlier?

Can you describe some of the environments
that you see in the pictures?

ponds, gulf, streams and bays are
the types of bodies of water.

Yes maam.

That movie is Twilight;
Breaking Dawn maam.

That is Hunger Games
maam.

Avatar, The Legend of
Aangis the title of that
movie maam.

It is Madagascar maam.

Ice Age maam.

Student A; Maam, I have noticed
the different environment in the
movies that you have showed.

Maam, I have observed in the
movie Twilight that the
Thats correct, student A. Thank you for your
answer.

How about the other pictures class, what
environment have you observed?

Thats also correct student B. thank you for your
answer.

Class, the pictures which you have seen earlier
is some of the examples of Terrestrial Biomes
which is our topic for today. Biomes are large
regions characterized by distinct climate and
specific life forms, especially vegetation
adapted to it. Climate long term weather is
the main factor determining what type of life,
especially what plants will thrive in a given land
area. Each biome consists of many ecosystems
whose communities have adapted to difference
in climate, soil and other factors throughout the
biome.

Most of the classified biomes are identified by
the dominant plants found in their
communities. Also, the diversity of animal life
and subdominant plant forms characteristics of
each biome is generally controlled by abiotic
environment conditions and the productivity of
the dominant vegetation. Adaptations and
niche specialization are nicely demonstrated in
the biome concept.

Lets now proceed to the types of biomes. The
first type is tundra, which means marshy plain.
It is characterized by absence of trees, the
presence of dwarf plants, and the ground
surface that is wet, spongy and hummocky. Soil
of this biome is usually permanently frozen.
Within this biome, temperature, precipitation,
and evaporation all tend to be at minimum.
Species diversity is small. Two types are alpine
and arctic tundra.

Next is taiga or boreal coniferous forest. The
climate of this biome is cool to cold with more
precipitation than the tundra occurring mainly
in the summer. The vegetation is needle-leaf
environment is experiencing a
cold weather due to snow.

Student B; In the movie Hunger
Games, I have observed that the
environment consists of trees
and grasses which can be a
forest.

The class will listen attentively.

tree species such as White Spruce and Balsam
Fir. Mammals include moose, bear and dear etc.
Reptiles are rare because of cold temperature.
Soils have deep litter layer and slow
decomposition.

The third is temperate deciduous forest. It is
characterized by a moderate climate and
deciduous trees. Maple, Beech and Willow
plants. Different types of herbivores, carnivores
and some reptiles and amphibians exist here.
Thin litter layer of soil and rapid decomposition.

Grassland is the next. It is also called Steppes in
Asia and Pampas in South America. Buffalo
grass and other grasses and flowering herbs are
common in this habitat. Trees are limited to low
lying areas.

What do you think are the animals present on
this kind of biome?
Can you name a herbivore that you know?

Thats right. Thank you. Grassland is dominated
by mammals such as small burrowing
herbivores, larger running herbivores and
carnivores. Organic rich and black chernozemic
soil are also common in grassland.

Another type is desert. It is consist of shrub
covered land where the plants are spatially
quite dispersed. It is influenced by descending
air currents which limit the formation of
precipitation. Cactus is common type of plant
found in the deserts.
Desert habitats have rich lizard and snake fauna
why do you think so?

Thats correct. High temperatures promote the
success of cold blooded like forms of lizard and
snakes. Litter layer is limited and organic
content of soil is very low.

Tropical Savanna are grasslands with scattered
drought-resistant trees. Characterized by
distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperatures in

Student A: I think herbivores are
the animals present in this type
of biome.
Student A: Carabao, horse, goat

Student A: Because lizards and
snakes are cold blooded animals
and high temperatures are
favorable to them.

this environment are hot all year long
Richest diversity of grazing mammals in the
world. Tropical savanna has rich soil.

Next is tropical rainforest. Its temperature and
humidity is high all year long. Also flora is highly
diverse. Most plants are evergreen with large,
dark green, leather leaves. Decomposition is
rapid. It has acidic and poor soil.

After discussing the different types of biomes,
we will have a short demonstration on how to
make a terrarium. A terrarium is a small garden
which is self contained within a glass or plastic
container.

Please observe the steps on how to make a
terrarium. (The teacher will demonstrate how
to make a terrarium)
Before you start, make sure that all the
materials are prepared. The materials needed
are:
aquarium
Ornamental or decorative items
(rocks, stones, twigs)
Misting Bottle
Pebbles
Charcoal
Small plants
Water
Digging tools
Soil
Sand

Next, make sure everything is extremely clean.
This will help prevent mold growing in the
terrarium in the future. Clean the aquarium
with clean cloth.

To the dry clean jar add approximately 2 of
pebbles. Then add 2 sand followed by 1
charcoal.

Add enough soil so there will be enough to
adequately cover the roots. Gently tamp
plant(s) into place using digging tools for
assistance. Place your decorative items such as
rocks, marbles, and twigs.

(The class will observe the
demonstration.)

Add to the terrarium a very small amount of
distilled water. This should be just enough to
barley dampen the soil. Or you may choose to
simply mist inside the terrarium with the
misting bottle.

Put the cover on the terrarium and monitor it
closely for the first 1-2 days. After this time
there should be a thin film of condensation on
the glass. It should not be so heavy that you
cant see inside. If it appears too wet inside
remove the lid for a several hours and allow
some evaporation to occur, and then close it up
again. If there is no moisture visible on the glass
add a very small amount of water every 24
hours until condensation becomes visible.

Keep the terrarium out of direct sunlight.
Indirect light is what it prefers. If its placed in
direct light, the sunlight coming through the
glass refracts (bends) and becomes intensified
to the point where it will overheat or cook
the plants. This will end the success of the
terrarium.

And now, each line has one minute to observe
and will take turns in examining it.

Based on your observation, what kind of biome
is it?

Thats correct. What is your proof?

Thats also right. Thank you.

VI. Values Integration
What can you observe in the picture?
(The teacher will present a picture)

Thats correct. Nowadays, most of our

(The class will follow what the
teacher said and observe the
terrarium)

Student A: Maam I think it is
grassland.

Student A: The plants that are
used are grasses that are
common in grassland.

Student A: I have observed that
the first picture shows a
mountain rich in trees while the
other picture shows a mountain
that is already deforested due to
excessive cutting down of trees.

forest is deforested due to excessive illegal
loggings. Because of this, we are
experiencing floods and landslides every
time that there are heavy rainfall, or
typhoons. Although our government is
implementing laws and regulations
regarding illegal loggings, most of us are not
following the rules. As a student and a
concerned citizen, we must be obedient in
all the laws especially those which are for
the nature. Because if we continuously
destroy our environment, our survival will
also be at risk.

VII. Summary:
Before we end our discussion, can someone
give me a summary of what we have
discussed for today?

VIII. Evaluation
Class, arrange all your chairs and sit properly.
Keep all your notebooks and leave a pen on
your table because we will have a short quiz.
All the students in front get one questionnaire
and one answering sheet and pass it backwards.
After you get your paper, you can now start
answering.
