Twelve months ago I had just embarked as SDC CEO
and so this Annual Review is also a review of (almost)
a year of my time with the SDC.
Staff changes in 2012 were few in number but
significant: Katie Roberts left after assisting with
Perkin House and its visitors. Barbara Carney also
retired, after 18 years with the Society, and was
replaced by Gillian Cooper in late 2012. We wish
Barbara and Katie the very best for the future.
During 2012 some key SDC resources were
addressed. The staff moved within Perkin House and
are now all situated on one floor in refurbished, open
plan office space. The planned development of Perkin
House as a school was dropped as a result of
government department decisions and so Perkin
House is a key priority in 2013.
Much of 2012 was spent out of the office, meeting
members and others. We attended a number of UK
Regional meetings and events, as well as visiting
members in India, China, Hong Kong, Portugal and
the AATCC Conference in the USA. All of these visits
enable us to engage with members and partners and
drive forward activity.
2012 saw a small increase in membership numbers, as
time spent working on membership retention reaped
rewards. Now we move forward with a good strong
membership base, which we plan to see grow in
number and diversity.
The Colour Experience has rightly been described as one
of the SDC jewels and this also has been very active
indeed during 2012. There is a growing demand for the
Colour Experience resource which is central to the
educational charity objectives of the SDC.
Qualifications are another core area where momentum
is growing. In 2012 we had more successful
candidates, including some with outstanding
examination performance. Also in 2012 the UK Dyers
Course was launched, with financial support from the
Worshipful Company of Dyers, for which we are very
grateful. A number of improvements are being merged
with further module development for 2013 and beyond
to ensure the SDC can train future industry experts.
So, in this Annual Review, and in my review of my first
year with the SDC, I derive confidence for the future.
That revolves around people as much as resources and
hence I feel we are better placed now for the future
and we will continue to ensure that is the case.

Chief Executives Review
By Dr Graham Clayton, Chief Executive
It is now three full years since the Society changed its
governance structure. Elected trustees serve for three
years and must then stand down for one year before
they may offer themselves for re-election. The Board
is now working well although, as with any new
structure, may require some modifications in the
light of experience - especially to achieve greater
trustee continuity.
The Board's role is to ensure the Society operates
within its Charity remit and together with the Chief
Executive to formulate strategies to take the Society
forward. As you all know the role of Chief Executive
was vacant for several months in 2011, with our new
Chief Executive, Dr Graham Clayton, starting in
February 2012. Graham, working with the Board, has
updated our three year rolling business plan and has
brought much valuable experience to the role and is
making a very positive impact on the Society, its staff
and members.
In this electronic age with its multiplicity of ways to
communicate, a major priority is to harness these
channels to build better communication with our
members worldwide and to foster their involvement.
As an educational charity it is pleasing to report
progress in our various training initiatives for all
levels of education from school children to industry.

We would like to congratulate our trading company
SDC Enterprises, the Society's principle source of
income, which has performed extremely well in the
present difficult economic climate. Together with
them we are exploring ways to diversify and extend
our portfolio of products and services beyond
textiles. To achieve this objective we are engaging
with champions in other industries to build
partnerships and would be pleased hear to from
anyone who may be able to assist in this. In
Bradford, we are looking to develop new tenancies
or uses for available space in Perkin House and to
thereby generate income for the Society.
Being a trustee is both a rewarding and challenging
experience. It also gives the opportunity for trustees
to develop their team and leadership skills in ways
which complement the traditional work place. As I
complete my three years and stand down (along with
Sue Bolton and John Easton) I would like to thank my
fellow Board members and SDC staff for their support
and recommend other Society members offer their
services in this role in the future, to continue the
development of our Society.

Trustee Board Review
By Chris Sargeant, Chair of the Trustee Board
Our plans for 2013 include activities and
developments in a number of areas, aiming to
disseminate knowledge, deliver value for money and
raise the profile of the Society.
STEM (Science Technology Engineering and
Mathematics) Ambassadors we will continue to
grow and develop this area of work.
Social Media we will continue to develop our use
of social media in reaching, communicating and
engaging with members and others.
Books we will progress our books programme, with
one new title due out in 2013 and a number of other
titles in the pipeline.
Coloration Technology we will continue to focus
on raising the number and quality of submissions and
will appoint Professor Robert Christie to the new
position of Reviews Editor.
Training we will develop and promote our UK and
international training programme.
Professional Coloration Qualifications we will
focus on promoting our unique range of
qualifications. This includes the new Textile
Coloration Certificate.
Standards we will continue to support
international and national standards to provide
industry with the necessary standards for
international trade.
The Colour Index will be upgraded, developed
and marketed.
Membership we will continue to focus on
retaining existing members with an emphasis on
recruiting new ones.
AIC (Association Internationale de la Couleur)
Congress we will sponsor a symposium on
Sustainable Coloration and an exclusive networking
lunch for members and invited guests at the AIC
Congress, to be held at The Sage, Gateshead in July.
SDC Day of Celebration: 26 April, Bradford, UK.
Our AGM, awards ceremony, Presidents Reception,
Celebration Dinner and the UK final of the SDC
International Design Competition.
SDC Indias tenth annual international conference
will take place in Mumbai in June.
Events we will hold regular regional events in
Pakistan, India, Hong Kong and the UK.

The science and art of colour we will deliver this
joint event with Leeds Art Gallery for National
Science and Engineering Week.
The Fabric of Bradford this community
engagement project with Hive starts in earnest in
2013 with workshops and activities.
Science Festivals weve been invited back to Teen
Tech, Big Bang Fair (Yorkshire & Humber) and
Croydon Science Fair.
Colouring the Nation well be delivering a day of
workshops for this National Museums of Scotland
project looking at Turkey Red.

We continued to focus on our communication
throughout 2012, including our more traditional
communication tools, such as The Colourist and a
printed newsletter for our UK members.
We sent regular email news and updates to members,
including our monthly e-newsletter, technical
updates and a series of Classic Review Articles,
highlighting review articles from Coloration
Technology, linked to other relevant content in the
Knowledge Vault.
We continued to raise awareness of the Society
internationally through our programme of events
and other activities.
We issued 14 press releases and secured extensive
press coverage.
We produced a video (available in English and
Chinese) to promote SDCs training programme.
We delivered our first ever webinar entitled
Coloration Technology: Getting Published, aimed at
raising the quality of submissions to our journal. The
webinar was then made available on the Wiley
website and SDC YouTube channel. By the end of the
year it had been watched 274 times.
The SDC website attracted over 37,000 visitors in
2012. This compares to 26,500 visitors for March to
December 2011.
The technical and marketing teams worked closely
with BBC Radio 4 on their series entitled Technicolor
to be broadcast in 2013.
Increasingly, we made the papers and presentations
from events available post-event to members.
Social Media
In 2012 we continued to develop and grow our
profile across our social media platforms including
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. This
enabled us to reach out to and engage with a
predominantly new audience in an interactive way.
We ran a number of Facebook campaigns and
promoted posts during the year, all of which helped
us reach a new audience.
Our LinkedIn group became well established during
2012, with an active discussion forum.
We finished the year with over 2,600 followers
across the different social media platforms.

My first official engagement as the President was to
inaugurate SDC Indias annual international
conference on Green Karma: revolutionizing Indian
textiles, at Chandigarh. The venue is near a textile
cluster and as expected there was active participation
from the local textile industry, with around 120
delegates. This was the first time that SDC held a
conference in this part of India and it created an
opportunity for the SDC brand to be known in
North India.
Immediately after the India conference, I was invited
to deliver a keynote address on Textile Industry in
India- the challenges faced at the international
technical conference on Marketplace Advantage
through Innovative Processes, Testing, and Quality
Control at Donghua University, Shanghai, China.
During this visit I was able to interact with the
academicians and students.
In November I was invited by SDCANZ to deliver a
talk on Addressing the Skill shortages in Coloration
at the daylong seminar on Skills, Technology, the
Future which was held at RMIT, Melbourne. There
were more than 60 participants from industry and
interest was shown in our training programmes. Since
academic institutes are focusing on fashion, a
tremendous need is felt, in Australia, for imparting
knowledge on textile coloration, and I feel that the
SDC training programmes have good scope in
Australia and New Zealand.
The finals of the design competitions were held in
Hong Kong, in December. This event was also
coupled with a half day conference on Fashioning
Colour Responsibly - What will your approach be?
I delivered a talk on Innovations in Coloration. The
previous day I accompanied the students on the visit
to a denim factory. It was a good experience for the
design students to see for themselves, first hand, the
dyeing of warp yarns with indigo.

In India I had the opportunity to inaugurate two
important seminars
In Surat on Sustainability in Textiles which
was co-hosted by the South Gujarat Chamber of
Commerce. Interactions with this government
body will help us to spread the SDC brand in and
around Surat, which is the major hub for
polyester coloration in India.
In Vapi on Textiles and Coloration organised
by the Vapi Industries Association. Vapi is the
manufacturing hub for pigments, dyes and
dye intermediates.
In 2013, the India region plans to capitalise on this
and build up our membership base as well as
conduct training programmes with the help of these
two bodies.
During the year Sue Williams trained and certified
four people to enable them to conduct training
programmes in India.

With the coloration industry moving to new countries
and the closure of many schools which taught
coloration there is good scope for SDC training
programmes both in the traditional textile centres as
well as in the new and developing ones. Furthermore,
with the increasing importance of designers and
buyers of brands, our training programmes will play a
major role in spreading the knowledge on coloration.
I thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as President, as it
was nice to meet so many people, from different
countries, with varying backgrounds, both young and
old, and to discuss SDCs role in the various issues
affecting the textile industry.
I am sure Mr Richard Straughan, who is the incoming
President, will also have a great and fulfilling year,
and I wish him all the best in his efforts to take the
SDC ahead.

During 2012 we concentrated on recruitment
without losing focus on the retention of members.
Final membership figures for 2012 showed a small
overall increase in the number of individual members,
the first rise we have seen for several years. The
total number of individual members at year end was
1,132, compared to 1,115 for 2011. Over the last
few years we have put considerable effort into
addressing our retention rates, and this is now
showing very positive results. Our overall retention
rate for 2012 (so excluding new members), was 87%.
This compares to an overall retention rate of 81%
in 2011.
China
In June 2012, we held a very successful joint
conference with AATCC and Donghua University.
We continue to review membership in China.
Hong Kong
In 2012, SDC HK Ltd celebrated its 40th anniversary,
and hosted another successful conference and the
grand final of the SDC International Design
Competition. Hong Kong continues to have a very
loyal membership base, with a retention rate of 96%.
India
SDC EC provided excellent opportunities for members
to network at their local events throughout the year
and at their annual conference. We welcomed
Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), one of the largest
design institutes in the country, as a college member
and Britacel Silicones India Ltd, a manufacturer of
textile finishing agents as a corporate member. At
the end of 2012 we had 219 members in India,
compared to 184 at the end of 2011.
Pakistan
SDC Pakistan continued with their extensive lecture
programme throughout 2012. We welcomed
Fashion Era Institute of Art & Design (FEIAD) as a
new college member.

United Kingdom
The UK Regions held a full calendar of events
throughout 2012. A number of these are now well
established and very successful, such as How Did I
Get Here?, organised by the London region. We also
organised a series of roadshows, designed to raise the
profile of the Society, recruit new members, and to
help deliver our charitable objectives. These took
place at Belfast Metropolitan College, UCA Farnham
and Leeds College of Art and Design and were all well
attended. As a result, Leeds College of Art and
Design rejoined as college members, and overall we
recruited a number of new student members. The UK
Regions Forum continued to meet regularly and to
take an active interest in delivering value to members
in the UK. The retention rate in the UK was 94%.
College and corporate membership
We focused on developing closer links with our
company and college members involving them in
regional events where possible. In addition to the
new members already mentioned we welcomed a
new corporate member from the USA Williamson
Dickie the number one manufacturer of work
apparel worldwide. At the end of 2012 we had 49
company and college members.

China
In 2012 we delivered a joint event with SDC China,
Donghua University and AATCC. Entitled 1st
International Conference on Marketplace Advantage
through Innovative Process, Testing and Quality
Control, the speakers included Andrew Filarowski
(SDC) and Dr Sanjiv Kamat (SDC President). Over 140
people attended the conference, and feedback from
the delegates was very positive. We continue to talk
to our team of committed members in China about
the development of the Society there within
academia and industry.
Hong Kong
2012 was the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong
region, and therefore a cause for celebration. The
Hong Kong region continues to have a loyal
membership base, and the largest number of CCols
outside the UK. Following the success of the one day
event in 2011, the year culminated again in a
conference held in partnership with the Clothing
Industry Training Authority (CITA) and the SDC HK
region. This was also host to the grand final of SDCs
International Design Competition.
India
SDC India continued their planned programme of
development. This included their highly successful
monthly lecture series and their excellent annual
conference. In 2012 this was entitled Green Karma:
revolutionizing Indian textiles, and was attended by
over 150 delegates. SDCs first Indian President Dr
Sanjiv Kamat inaugurated the conference a very
proud moment for SDC India. Other highlights
included a workshop on Denim Processes for 32
young designers from the BD Somani School of Art
and Fashion Technology. The SDC EC Trustees have
been very active in India and also with respect to the
relationships with the SDC in the UK. Several
meetings have taken place to ensure improvements
in the communications and relationships between
SDC EC and the SDC in the future. This has led to
renewed vigour in activities on all sides.
Pakistan
SDC Pakistan continued to deliver an excellent
programme of well attended lectures. Topics
included Crease Recovering Finishing, Colour
Physics Spectrophotometer, Selection of Dyestuff
for their intended purpose on textiles and a natural
dyes seminar. The team in Pakistan plan to continue
the lecture series at the National Textile University in
Faisalabad, with other activities planned in Lahore
and Karachi.
International Overview

Other Countries
In 2012 it has been a specific intention to focus on
key overseas countries for development and support
activity. This enabled consolidation and firm
grounding for future success. Planning started with
the President Elect on additional activity in the EU
given its location and historic links. A vital message
however is that the SDC is still a truly international
organisation interested in colour worldwide. We are
unable to focus on all countries simultaneously and
so attention is on the specific countries above. This
is not to the exclusion of other countries though and
we welcome and support members worldwide. Those
countries not included in development focus are kept
in a watching brief and can be included if demand
and resources prove feasible.

The Technical Team manage the education, training,
qualifications as well as the Colour Index and
Colour Experience.
Colour Index the Colour Index continued to receive
submissions of new dyes and pigments from
manufacturers around the world. The end uses cover
wide ranging sectors. The development of the
website and improved submission processes began,
for 2013 implementation, together with a review of
the content to ensure the continued relevance of the
Colour Index. We worked closely with the ECHA
(European Chemical Agency) to ensure that the
correct nomenclature was used in REACH
(Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and
restriction of CHemicals) documentation highlighting
the importance of this publication.
Training training continued in the UK, Europe,
India, China, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Thailand and
Hong Kong. We worked with SDC India, DyStar, SGS
and CTIC (China Textile Information Centre). The
following numbers of people were trained.

In India we undertook a programme of training
five trainers to run the Colour Management of
Textiles Course and subsequently trained 18 people
from DyStar/ Alok industries, AADTT and 24 people
in Delhi.
The process of expanding courses from bespoke
training for individual companies to arranging public
training dates began for 2013. We were also pleased
to run training courses for a major European retailer.

Qualifications - ASDC the rules on ASDC and CCol
approved by the AGM 2012 were instigated and the
first batch of ASDC students under this new procedure
took their examinations. We continue to increase the
number of people taking the course and in 2012 had
an exceptional student who was awarded the
Presidents Diploma of Honour.
Textile Coloration Certificate this new qualification
supported and approved by EQAB and developed with
the UK dyeing industry was piloted in 2012. The UK
industry was involved and collectively placed 19
people from eight different companies on the course.
This was very gratefully supported by a grant of
20,000 from the Worshipful Company of Dyers.
Preparation for developing the syllabus and content of
subsequent stages was started in readiness for 2013.
Continuing Professional Development the rules
and processes of CPD within the SDC were updated
and reported to the membership. The use of CPD by
the majority of professional bodies is a key factor in
SDC members demonstrating their continuing learning
and development.

BSI TCI/81 and ISO TC 38 SC1 Secretariats the
Society continues to hold these secretariats offering
support to the textile industry through the
development of colour fastness and colour
measurement standards. The ISO secretariat is held
jointly with SAC (Standardization Administration of
the People's Republic of China). In 2012 we
published one new standard: BS EN ISO 105-A11
Determination of colour fastness grades by digital
imaging techniques.
Bursaries as an educational charity, SDC is
committed to supporting people in their journey of
colour education. A system of bursaries was
re-introduced in 2012 offering two funding streams:
a main bursary for students on colour-related
courses, and an ASDC bursary.
FIREup the SDC offered its support in 2012 to
FIREup (Fashion Innovation, Research and Enterprise)
a project proposal from UAL (University of the Arts
London) for funding from the Arts and Humanities
Research Council to create a Creative Economy
Knowledge Exchange.

Central to our status as an educational charity is the
Colour Experience.
Highlights for 2012:
School Engagement
For the first time ever, we delivered more Colour
Experiences to secondary schools than to primary
schools. This required a change of approach as
secondary schools prefer to work with us through
science fairs, festivals and outreach events.
Visits to Perkin House
Our regular primary schools visited in large numbers.
A new addition in 2012 was a Colour Detective
activity in the gallery where groups work in teams
finding clues and solving the colour mystery.
Outreach events in schools
Our outreach engagement increased by 67% and we
worked with over 2,800 people outside Perkin
House. Richard Ashworth is a registered STEM

Ambassador and our involvement with various STEM
initiatives has given us more opportunities to work
with secondary schools.
Teacher Training
We supported 25 trainee science teachers in their
educational study and practice. We welcomed two
Education Studies students on placement giving them
the opportunity to work with a wide range of pupils.
We also organised a successful Twilight Taster for
Teachers, our first promotional event for
professionals in the education sector at Perkin House.
Educational Resources
Another achievement was the development of our
online engagement with teachers through our Colour
Experience educational downloads. Resources,
including Azo Dye Synthesis, Chromatography and
Natural Dyes, have been made available through the
Guardian Teacher Network and the Times Educational
Supplement (TES). Both networks have thousands of
education professionals registered with them. From
September to December the TES resources were
viewed 1,191 times.
Festivals and Events
New large scale events included: the Royal Institution
family days, the Big Bang Fair (Yorkshire & Humber),
the Bradford Science Festival, Teen Tech Humber and
Leeds Light Night, reaching 1,644 people.

Regional events
We delivered a range of Colour Experience events for
our members reaching over 250 people. Richard
Ashworth gave presentations at regional events and
universities across the UK including London,
Southampton, Fareham, Leeds and Belfast.
Partnerships
Our partnerships included:
West Yorkshire STEM & NYBEP we have
worked closely with both providers organising
Chemistry at Work days, delivering outreach
workshops at STEM events and presenting at
STEM Teacher Forums.
Leeds Art Gallery linking the science and art
of colour through public events. We engaged
with over 400 members of the public at Leeds
Light Night and the Big Draw event explaining
the physics behind light and colour.
Hive We have been helping to secure funding
for the Fabric of Bradford project which will
explore experiences of Bradfords Textile
Heritage and will run over the next two years.
Bradford College Textile Archive continuing
work on digitising the SDC Textile Archive and
exploring educational and commercial uses for
the samples.

In summary, in 2012 we provided 109 Colour
Experiences reaching over 4,880 beneficiaries.
Our engagement increased by 7% compared to 2011.
We would like to give special and grateful thanks to
the Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust for their
continued support. This enabled the Colour
Experience to remain cost effective for schools.

The dissemination of knowledge and information
relating to colour is at the heart of SDCs publications
activities. We offer print, electronic and web-based
products.
Books
Sales of SDC books performed well in 2012. In
partnership with our publisher Wiley, we continued to
progress a number of new and revised titles in the
new SDC/Wiley series. The first of these will be
published in 2013.
Coloration Technology
The worlds leading peer-reviewed journal dealing
with the application of colour and the only journal
that covers all aspects of coloration technology.
In 2012, we introduced a new article type for the
journal the Feature Article. The Editor-in-Chief
selects an article from each issue to feature with a
recommendation explaining why the work is
important and interesting. Authors of selected
articles are also invited to provide a short profile.
We also delivered our first webinar in 2012 entitled
Coloration Technology: Getting Published.
We received 233 submissions in 2012, an increase
of 33 on the previous year. Coloration Technology
remained 4th in the ISIs Materials Science,
Textile category.
In 2012 there were 62,985 full text downloads, an
increase of 12% compared to 2011. We also
produced a second virtual issue of the journal,
focusing on Adsorption Phenomena. This was free to
access and by the end of 2012 the articles included
had been downloaded a total of 2,248 times.
The journal also published a second Special Issue in
2012, which focused on Green Chemistry.
The SDC Centenary Medal was awarded to Lien Van
Der Schueren and Karen De Clerck in recognition of
their article entitled Coloration and application of
pH-sensitive dyes on textile materials.

The Colourist
We produced four issues of our members magazine,
with themes including: reduce, recycle, reuse, colour
measurement, education and engagement and an eco
special. Current and back copies are available in the
members area of the SDC website. We will continue
to actively review and develop the magazine to
ensure it remains relevant to members.

Enterprises achieved a healthy level of growth in
turnover during 2012, as a very strong final
quarter drove sales and profit levels beyond their
respective budgets. This will allow the funds
transferred to the Society to be higher than predicted.
Asian markets continue to dominate the demand for
SDC products, both for export testing and increasingly
for their domestic standards. Excellent work by
distribution partners throughout the world, supported
by Enterprises participating in exhibitions in China,
India and Turkey, was a key factor in the sales success.
The encouraging increase in turnover conceals a
number of challenges for the company, as once again
growth was driven by increases in the volume of
products sold, whilst the average selling prices
declined. The decline in the gross profit, relative to
sales, was compounded by rapidly rising raw material
costs. This damage to the gross margin, despite
reduced overhead costs, led to a reduction in the net
profitability. Accordingly less profit will be available to
fund the Societys charitable work, or to be retained for
re-investment in the business, than the increase in
turnover might suggest.
Supporting the increase in sales volumes has been a
policy of on-going investment in the core business. In
2012 investments were made in inspection and
production equipment, to strengthen quality control
and increase production capacity. Further capital
investment is planned for 2013.
Intense competition in the testing sector will
continue to put severe pressure on sales prices during
2013. The use of global tenders is being exploited,
by Enterprises competition, in an attempt to
commoditise testing consumables, reducing the part
quality, correlation and consistency of performance
play in purchasing decisions. Such commoditisation is
a threat to both Enterprises and the Societys future.
To address the challenges and threats faced, and to
secure the Societys long-term income, Enterprises
has committed itself to implementing a new product
development strategy (NPD). Currently at a market
research stage, where expenditure has mainly been
on staff time, NPD may require significant R&D
expenditure over a 3 5 year period. The new
governance and financial agreements reached with
the Society will support the NPD strategy, and
re-investment in the core business, whilst balancing
this against the annual income the Society can
reasonably expect from Enterprises. Enterprises now
hold, after providing gift-aid to the Society, limited
financial reserves to fund growth in the business and
to prevent the need for further equity investment.

Our range of events and competitions are vital in
helping us to deliver our charitable objectives. In
2012 we delivered another excellent programme of
regional, national and international events. Our
events aim to inspire, stimulate and help members
keep up to date with best practice. They are great for
networking and an excellent way for the Society to
raise its profile internationally.
Our 2012 programme included:
SDC Day of Celebration, UK incorporating our
AGM, awards ceremony and the UK final of SDCs
International Design Competition. We also
inaugurated our new President, Dr Sanjiv Kamat from
India. We welcomed a great line up of speakers
including Professor Martin Bide (University of Rhode
Island), Professor Robert Christie (Heriot-Watt
University), John Murphy (Huntsman) and Indira
Chauhan (George). The day finished with a capacity
black-tie dinner.
George Douglas Memorial Lecture presented by
Professor David Lewis. Professor Lewiss lecture was
entitled 50 Years of Colour and Textile Chemistry
My Lucky Career Choice.
Green Karma: revolutionizing Indian textiles SDC
Indias successful 9th annual conference.
Marketplace advantage through Innovative
Processes, Testing and Quality Control a joint
event with AATCC and Donghua University.
Fashioning Colour Responsibly what will your
approach be? Attended by over 140 delegates, this
half day conference was co-hosted by SDC in
partnership with SDC Hong Kong and CITA (Clothing
Industry Training Authority). The conference was
followed by an awards dinner, attended by over
160 people.
Regional events in addition to our national and
international conferences, throughout 2012 there
was an excellent programme of events organised by
SDCs regions. SDC India continued their monthly
lecture series, and the UK regions offered a varied
programme of events. These events were an
opportunity to engage with young people and
potential new members, as well as giving added value
to locally based members.

In addition to SDC events, we also attended a number
of seminars and conferences. These included the
RITE Conference and The UK Fashion Industry
Westminster Media Forum. The technical team
attended a number of conferences to promote the
Society and its training courses. These included
several events where we took stands: London
Garments Expo, Surfex Plus, and A New Dawn
Rebuilding UK textile Manufacturing.
We continued to develop our competitions an
excellent way of engaging with students, young
people, universities and colleges and introducing
them to the science of colour.
SDC International Design Competition
Open to undergraduate fashion and textile design
students, this competition encourages the creative
and original use of colour in fashion and textile
design. The theme for the 2012 competition was
Fashioning Colour Responsibly what will your
approach be? The finalists from 10 countries
travelled to Hong Kong for the grand final.

The overall winner was Judy Scott from Duncan of
Jordanstone at the University of Dundee in the UK.
Judy took home the Veronica Bell Trophy and a
cheque for 1,000. The competition is sponsored
by Clariant.
CSI Colour Award
This competition is also open to fashion and textile
design students and invites them to design a trend
card using CSI Color Search software. 235 students
registered an interest in the competition, with entries
from 35 students. The entries were of a very high
standard and the competition was won by Alice
Howard-Graham from UCA Farnham in the UK.
The competition is sponsored by Color Solutions
International, a member of the Dystar Group.
KK Bespoke Schoolwear Competition
This competition was open to students and recent
graduates living in Ireland. The winner was Toni
Doherty, and her prizes included 500, a placement
at KK Schoolwear and the opportunity to present her
collection at the schoolwear show in Birmingham.

Trustees Annual Report
The trustees of the Society are of the view that the funds and assets
have been prudently managed and effectively applied during the year,
solely in furtherance of the agreed objectives with financial
performance continually under review against agreed objectives.
Trustees are satisfied that the financial policies and plans presently
being applied are relevant, appropriate and adequate to support and
sustain the charitable activities of the Society and the objectives for
the year 2012 have been substantially achieved.
Charitable objective
The Society was established in 1884 to advance the science of colour.
The Society achieves this aim by global dissemination of colour
knowledge to members, industry and the public, via publications of
scientific papers, lectures, and e-media.
Constitution
The Society is a charitable corporation, incorporated by Royal Charter
with the governing documents being the Royal Charter (1963) with
Amendments, Trust Deeds and By-Laws (2009).

Organisation
The Trustee Board is the governing body of the charity with nine
trustees elected from among the Voting Members of the charity by the
Voting Members. The Chief Executive Officer, the Honorary Treasurer
and the Honorary Secretary are also members of the Trustee Board
which may also co-opt a maximum of two members. Only elected
members shall take part in any vote of the Trustee Board.
Related Parties
The Society works globally in partnership with kindred bodies,
educational establishments, industry and affiliated societies in joint
technical and educational activities providing public benefit. The
Society has no associated financial liabilities relevant to related
party transactions.

This statement is made solely to the trustees as a body in accordance

extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to
anyone other than the charity's trustees as a body, for our work, for
this statement or for the opinions we have formed.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and auditor
The trustees are responsible for preparing the summarised financial
statements in accordance with the recommendations of the Charities
SORP. Our responsibility is to report to you our opinion on the
consistency of the summarised financial statements with the full
financial statements and the trustees' report. We also read the other
information contained in the summarised annual report and consider
the implications for our report if we become aware or any apparent
misstatements or material inconsistencies with the summarised
financial statements.
Basis of opinion
We conducted our work in accordance with bulletin 2008/3 "The
auditors' statement on the summary financial statement" issued by
the Auditing Practices Board for use in the United Kingdom. Our report
on the full annual financial statements describes the basis of our
opinion on those financial statements.
