Franchise fee
increase defeated

Mel Tiede, director of corporate services, was

back before council on Oct. 1 to once again discuss the natural gas franchise fee that had been
originally presented at the Sept. 3 meeting.
Franchise fees are a recognized source of revenue for municipalities. When a community elects
to have no franchise fee, or a lower than average franchise fee, the resulting foregone revenue
would need to be made up in some other way,
said Tiede.
The present inflationary prices are greater than
have been witnessed in the past number of years.
The town is not exempt from inflationary pressures, when you combine these inflationary pressures with the staffing initiative that council approved recently, administration and council have
significant challenges I anticipate to balance the
2015 budget, said Tiede.
The towns current franchise fee rate is 11.18
per cent, and Tiede was coming forward with
the request to raise it to 16.62 per cent. The increase would raise the average users fees $1.90
per month.
Tiede explained that the town has properties
that are exempt from paying property taxes within the municipal boundaries. They are general
institutions like schools, hospitals, churches, certain senior care facilities and the like. All of these
facilities do, however, use electricity and natural
gas and the franchise fee is payable by all that
consume electricity and natural gas there are no
exceptions.
These properties all border roadways and benefit from roads, street lighting, town sidewalks, and
can also use the town-owned and operated water,
sanitary sewer and stormwater systems.
These systems at times have been the beneficiary of property taxes where the system has utilized town financial reserve that has been used to
fund a capital project or an operating initiative.
The most recent example, said Tiede, would be
the reserve that funded a third of the cost of the
Wildflower Reservoir.
The use of franchise fees is a generally accepted
method of raising funds in Alberta. Only the town
of Nobleford out of 69 other municipalities didnt
have a franchise fee, and of those 75 per cent listed their rates as greater than 11.18 per cent.
Councillor Brad Walls is against it no matter how
much it is. He would rather taxes be increased
than nickel and dime the residents.
Councillor Pat Fule questioned if the funds
raised could be earmarked for specific projects,
such as a new recreational facility.

Austin Drummond of the Strathmore Storm midget Tier 1 team used his big frame to
knock the puck off of an Okotoks player during an exhibition game Oct. 11 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Storm kick-off their regular season on Oct. 17 (7:30 p.m.) when
they host Chestermere.

Students educated with farm safety

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Ag for Life held a safetyawareness fair at Langdon
School on Thursday, Oct. 9.
The fair consisted of farming-related companies who
stress to the students the importance safety first and being aware of your surroundings on the farm.
Were putting on this program for farm and rural safe-

ty because we recognize that

farms are a great place to be
but they have some dangers
associated with them, same
with rural areas in general,
said Heather Hanlon, Ag for
Life program coordinator.
Our safety days hit on rural
topics and even small towns
and city kids can get a lot
of them too because there
is something for everyone
here.
Companies that provide a

variety of safety demonstrations are usually brought in

for the safety fair.
There are a lot of great
companies like Operation
Lifesaver and Red Cross that
do this, they have a booth
that they go around and set
up. The Ag for Lifes founders include ATCO, Rocky
Mountain Equipment and
UFA, those are three of our
seven founders here talking
about safety issues important

to them, said Hanlon. Its

great we have these companies that support safety and
give time to kids. I look for
companies that have an important safety message and
would like to share it and
volunteer their time.
If there is something that
Hanlon wants the students
to take out of this, its to be
more aware and to learn
something from each station.

New school announced for Strathmore

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

An announcement from Alberta Premier Jim Prentice last week has Golden
Hills School Division (GHSD) officials
excited. On Oct. 8 Prentice announced
Phase 3 of an education capital project
plan that represents a 10-year build-out
of new schools and school expansions.
Strathmore is one of the lucky communities that are being promised a new
school.
Were certainly pleased to have the
support announced by the provincial
government for it, said GHSD board
chair Dave Price.
The announcement came a little earlier than expected, and has GHSD and
the Town of Strathmore working together to quickly determine a suitable site
for the new K-9 school. It will also be a
few years minimum before the shovels
hit the ground, with community consultations required and a number of other
steps to be met first. From conceptual
drawings to students walking through

the doors can take up to five years.

During the announcement that Mr.
Prentice spoke, he indicated that there
was a cabinet committee that was going to help expedite the process with
everything from planning to the actual
development permits and those kinds
of things, that being the case it could
shorten things up a bit, said Price.
The last school built in town, was
Strathmore High School (SHS). Over the
past few years many of the schools have
faced increased class sizes and staff innovation as space became more and
more limited.
At this time, at Crowther Memorial Junior High, we are out of room
to add any more portables there, no
more modulars, theres just simply no
space to put them on the site, and our
school is full. We could say the same
thing about a number of our elementary
schools as well, said Superintendant of
Schools Bevan Daverne.
Were really very pleased at this announcement, its come at the right time
and itll be very good for the commu-

nity of Strathmore and our students.

Concerns are already being raised
about the influx of students who will be
heading to SHS down the road.
That school (SHS), were not quite to
capacity yet on the core, but that school
was designed to add in lots of space and
modulars and so weve got lots of room
for growth there. That school could easily go up to in excess of 1,000 kids, and
were nowhere near that right now. Lots
of room for expansion within that core,
said Daverne.
Phase 1 had been announced in
2011, which included 35 schools, 31 of
which are complete. In Phase 2 it was
announced that 50 new schools and 70
modernizations would take place. All
but five will be ready to accept new students in 2016.
Phase 3 will consist of 230 capital
projects, of which there will be 55 new
schools and 20 modernizations. Phase
3 also includes $43.2 million funding
to school boards this year to begin immediate planning, which will accelerate
the process by approximately one year.

Every year countless pumpkins are carved across North

America to help get people in the spirit for Halloween, but
as we turn the calendar over to November many people no
longer have a use for that jack-o-lantern that was sitting on
their front step. This year Strathmore FCSS and the Youth Club
of Strathmore have found an innovative and unique resolution
to that issue Our 2nd Annual Pumpkins in the Park.
This is a great way for families to interact and enjoy this
season. On November 1st, 2014 we are hoping that all
residents of Strathmore that have carved pumpkins will drop
them off at Kinsman Park before 4:00 pm. Volunteers will
set them up throughout the park and light them for a festive
evening spectacular.
For two hours you and your family can wander the park and
enjoy the festivities. The event begins at 6 p.m. and runs until
8 p.m. Hot Chocolate will be available to help keep you warm
and music will fill the air.
Anyone taking in the event is encouraged to bring along a nonperishable food item, new unwrapped toy or cash donation
for the Good Food Box Program.
If you would like to extend the life-span of your jack-o-lantern
this Halloween season and you want everyone to enjoy your
jack-o-lantern as well, all you have to do is drop off your
carved pumpkin at Kinsman Park on Saturday, November 1st,
2014 by 4:00 pm .
If you would like to volunteer with any aspect of the event
from pickups to drop offs, or setting the pumpkins up at the
park, please give Dahrlyne a call at Strathmore FCSS - 403934-9090.
With everyones support, this could be an amazing event for
all to enjoy.

Abstract artist hosts first

showing at Strathmore library
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Each month the Strathmore Municipal Library tries to bring artists in to display their work. Octobers artist is Erin Wiggins, based
in Calgary. Wiggins is an abstract artist, working mostly with acrylic paints and wax crayons.
My specialty is black light art which are pieces done in neon
colours of both mediums. Pieces done in neons will change and
glow in black light, said Wiggins.
She has been working with wax for about four or five years
now, but has been painting since elementary school. It was in high
school that she really started to notice her passion for abstract art.
Working in neons started about eight years ago when I wanted
to make some pieces for my husbands music studio, said Wiggins.
It is decked out like a mini dance club, and has black lights up
all over the place. I really wanted to make some stuff he could
hang in his studio that would inspire him and be very visually appealing for him while he mixes and produces music.
She hopes that others find her work unique, and are inspired
by it. The art show at the library is the first time Wiggins has displayed her work.
Im quite excited to have my first official exhibit. Its nice to be
able to display my work finally to a bigger audience, said Wiggins.
However, I seem to be doing this backwards. Ive already been
selling my work for almost a decade, but this is the first time Ive
ever had an exhibit.
Wiggins work can be found at the library until Oct. 31. Anyone
interested in purchasing any of the pieces can do so through the
library or by contacting Erin at ee.wiggins@shaw.ca.

We have to find ways to improve the

town, were doing it with our parks and
pathways and major projects. This is
just one more way to find some funds
for a needed project and it would impact a lot of families in this town, a lot
of seniors too, said Fule.
Councillor Rocky Blokland argued
against both the fee increase and Fules
suggestion of earmarking the funds,
stating that while it may only be a $1.90
increase for natural gas, all of the other
bills are also going to go up, creating a
problem for seniors, or those on fixed
incomes.
In this instance when I think about
an increase in a franchise fee for
those people on a fixed income I know
from past experience that they can turn
off their lights, that they can turn down
their furnaces or put an extra blanket
on the bed, said Councillor Denise Peterson.
I know that they have some mechanism for control over those issues that
relate to franchise fees, they have no
control over increasing taxes which
will certainly be facing if we want to
provide services to our community at
the rate the community is demanding
them.
Walls made a motion to accept everything as information. Peterson, Mayor
Michael Ell, and Fule voted against it,
stating a decision needed to be made.
Councillor John Rempel was not at the
meeting, and the motion was defeated

Pharmacist

Capsule Comments

Pharmacists often are asked about certain herbal

medications and whether they are safe and effective
for certain conditions. An example is the herb
feverfew, a member of the daisy family and some
have suggested it may help those with migraines.
There is fair but not convincing evidence that it
may help prevent migraines. However, it should be
avoided in pregnancy and avoided for 2 weeks prior
to surgery because it may affect blood clotting.
Most pregnant women experience morning sickness
during the first trimester although it often lasts longer
than just mornings. Various non-drug treatments have
been tried. These include acupuncture, chamomile,
lemon oil, vitamin B6 and ginger. The evidence for
ginger and B6 was greater (although still weak).
Our pharmacists are familiar with these products.
Wed be glad to help.

Artist Erin Wiggins has her work on display at the Strathmore Municipal Library until Oct. 31.

services to the community, said Tiede.

For every $100,000 of operating expenditure there would be a one per
cent increase to taxes. Therefore an
additional $1 million of net additional
expenditure would add 10 per cent to
taxes in order to balance the budget.
Without an increase to the franchise
fee the money will still be needed and
there will likely be a need to increase
taxes. At the end of the council meeting Chief Administrative Officer Dwight
Stanford stated that there would likely
be a pretty good tax increase. The
budget is scheduled for discussion at
the fall workshop, being held at the
beginning of November. The electricity
franchise fee was also brought up for
discussion and defeated with the same
split voting amongst the councillors.

With some teens texting more than 3000 times per

because it was a tie vote.

I think there is a certain amount of
proxy to accepting a significant portion
of a franchise fee and not accepting an
increase that works to the average as
weve been presented with and speaking against motions like this in terms of
the benefits that could ensue for community knowing full well that its going to result in a tax increase to citizens
where they have no control, because
you cant turn out the lights on a tax
increase, you have no power over limiting it, said Peterson.
By voting against this motion we are
in effect holding our citizens hostage
to a tax increase over which they will
have no control. Councillor Fule made
a motion in favour of the increase,
which was again defeated due to a split
vote.
The increase in net municipal taxation to the town has increased on average 3 per cent per year over the last
two years. New residential and commercial building in that time period has
raised some of the additional taxation,
the balance would be as a result of inflation and increasing costs to provide

Beekeeping in Alberta

Strathmore RCMP are currently investigating two separate

hit and runs which occurred this week in the rural areas
surrounding Strathmore.

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Beekeeping has been
around for years, with some
taking it up as a hobby, and
others doing it to make a
living. Debbie Wakelam has
been keeping bees for a couple of years now as a hobby.
She is not a commercial beekeeper, and said the way she
does some things is different
than what others may do.
My philosophy is nature
takes care of itself, like nature should and Im really
a keeper of bees because
they can keep themselves
and they know exactly what
theyre doing, I just look in
the box and say woohoo this
is fascinating or whatever,
said Wakelam.
I am a keeper of bees
not a beekeeper. So true,
as there is no way we can
contain or make the bees
do anything differently from
what they are programmed
to do.
She doesnt use any chem-

The first of which occurred at approximately 5:45pm,

October 5, 2014 on Hwy 564 just prior to the intersection
of RR 250 in Wheatland County. A Westbound white van
was passing a westbound black Ford 1/2 ton pick-up
when the black truck made a southbound turn onto Range
Road 250 colliding with the passing van. The black truck
then proceeded south on Range Road 250 failing to stop
at the scene of the collision. The black Ford would have
sustained damage on the drivers side and front fender as a
result of the collision.
Strathmore RCMP file #20141262657 refers.
The second hit & run was on October 8, 2014 at
approximately 03:38 am while Strathmore RCMP were
responding to a 2 vehicle collision on Glenmore Trail at
Range Road 283 in Rockyview County. A silver, possibly
Mazda sedan collided with one of the vehicles involved in
the collision that police were already attending. The silver
Sedan then fled the scene, last observed to be
Northbound on Hwy 797.
Strathmore RCMP file # 20141272680 refers.
Anyone who may have witnessed either of these collisions
or has information which may lead to locating the suspect
vehicles is requested to contact Strathmore RCMP
or call Crimestoppers.

icals with her bees, choosing

to raise them as organically
as possible.
Her bees are Saskatraz
Queens, a new line out of
Saskatoon.
I love them. The bees are
fuzzy and yellow and maybe
dont produce as much honey, but theyre very calm, so
theyre Canadian and theyre
calm, theyre good for me,
said Wakelam.
She wrapped 10 hives last
fall, and only two survived,
partly due to the winter and
partly due to mites killing
the bees. Of the two that survived she was able to make
four splits or new hives, divvying up the queens for new
hives for this year.
Wakelam uses a plastic
foundation for her frame.
As the wax gets used it gets
darker and darker, something the queen likes. The
bees build all of the combs
and make them darker as
they keep being used, which
is called a brood. Thats
where the queen lays eggs,

there is some honey but its

not for consumption.
On other frames, The
wax will stay white because
its just the honey and not
the eggs being laid in them,
so these are the ones we
pull that will have nectar in
them, said Wakelam.
She and her husband had
bought the land where the
bees are located; her husband decided he wanted a
horse to go with the land.
While at Aggie Days a couple years ago the Calgary
Bee Club was there Wakelams intertest was piqued,
and she decided Im going
to get bees. She went up to
Edmonton to take the beekeeping course, and so her
hobby was born.
The Greidanus Honey
Mill, based in High River,
has 6,000 hives with some
in Strathmore and Wheatland County. Grace Stroms
father started beekeeping
in 1973, and now she and
her brother are taking over
the farm. Being a commercial beekeeper, Strom spoke
about some differences between a hobbyist and commercial beekeeper.
There are two major differences, one being the
scale of the number of hives
that are operated. A hobbyist will normally have 50
hives or less. A commercial
beekeeper keeps more than
2,000 hives. The other major
difference is the relationship created between the
beekeeper and his/her hives
is different depending on if
there are many or few.
A hobby beekeeper will
spend a significantly larger
amount of time evaluating
the bees and assessing the
needs of each hive. Because
only a few hives need to be
assessed, a hobby beekeeper can monitor his/her hives

much more carefully and

closely, said Strom.
In order to check each
hive in a commercial operation, workers must be hired.
We train these workers to
monitor the hives to determine whether or not they are
healthy and prescribe treatment for hives that are not
thriving. We also need the
workers to collect the honey
in the summer and prepare
the hives for winter.
Each spring Honey Mill
gets their bees from New
Zealand, and the queens
come from Hawaii to replace
the winter loses.
Preparing for the winter is
something each beekeeper
also does a little differently.
Getting our bees to survive the winter is very important to us. We make sure
that the bees are fed very
well in October and are
healthy. This means that we
provide sugar water to the
bees (as there are very few
flowers around, relative to
the summer) and we provide
soy flour as a source of protein, said Strom.
Wakelam leaves her bees
with honey over the winter,
opting not to pull all the honey she can from the hives.
She said a lot of beekeepers will feed the bees sugar
water for the winter, and she
does too, a bit, but wants to
go away from it in the future
when she has more frames
drawn with honey.
This year as I move toward doing things more organically, I have been giving
the bees frames with old
honey for them to eat now.
Most operations do things
much, much differently as
you will learn from speaking
to other hobbyists and commercial bee keepers, said
Wakelam.

Pesticide extremely toxic to bees

Continued from Page 6

Fears over Colony Collapse disorder have arisen
over the past couple of years. It has been a bad
couple of years for bees - freezing temperatures,
chemicals and parasites are some of the causes,
and in some cases pesticides are being called out
as the problem.
There is a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids. These are typically used for seed coatings.

We know that this class of pesticide is extremely

toxic to the bees, said Strom.
This pesticide has not caused the same problems for us as it has for other beekeepers (e.g. beekeepers in Ontario) as the major crop in our area
that uses these seed coatings is canola. (Canola
seeds are much smaller than corn seeds and the
amount of seed coating is much less.) That said,
we have seen hives in decline, and we have suspected that pesticides might be responsible.

The loss of bees can affect the world food supply as farmers rely on them to pollinate their crops.
Bees are important directly and indirectly. The pollination
of crops is incredibly important to agriculture in Alberta. If
bee populations were to be wiped out, it would be devastating to all aspects of agriculture in the province, said Strom.
Bees also directly produce wonderful products for humans. They produce a wonderful, more healthful sweetener
than sugar and they also produce beeswax which humans
have found hundreds of uses for.
There are multiple articles and resources online outlining
Colony Collapse Disorder and how it is affecting bees and
crops.

New subdivision gets approval

for next planning stage
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Kevin and Joy Muenchrath received good news at the Oct. 1
council meeting, when council
gave third reading to their proposed rezoning of their property.
The property, located at 3 Centre Street, is a bit odd shaped,
which works perfectly with
what the couple has planned.
They would like to ideally build
12 condo units, with the plan
of keeping one for themselves
and one for their special needs
daughter.
Our plan always was to make
this property unique, because
were planning on staying here.
Our intent was always to stay on
the property so we would become like the property managers. We would control the environment, keep the green space,
said Kevin.
We want to see it beautiful
just as much as everybody else.
Some of the complaints from
adjacent landowners include
dealing with snow removal, increased traffic and beautification.
One couple also stated that by

rezoning the property it would

not keep in line with the towns
motto where quality of life is a
way of life.
I love what people are saying
about the town, that quality of
life is a way of life because part
of this proposal deals with our
family member who is special
needs and us forming a plan for
her, said Joy Muenchrath.
The property, which is .6 of an
acre, will give enough space for
12 units, with 20 spaces for parking, which meets the guidelines
in the newly adopt Land Use Bylaw. In the conceptual drawing
the Muenchraths also addressed
any snow-removing concerns,
highlighting three areas on the
property where the snow could
be stored. There would be only
one entrance/exit, meaning no
one would be backing onto the
street.
A Traffic Impact Assessment
was taken at Parkwood Crescent. The towns roadway classification system is based on the
Town of Strathmore Master Servicing Study annexation 2006.
Centre Street, from Centennial
Drive on the north to Archie
Klaiber Trail on the South, is

classified as a collector roadway.

It is intended to accommodate
up to 8,000 vehicles per day
and collect and distribute traffic
between local streets and arterials, said Werner Fischer with the
towns planning and development department.
Local streets by comparison
accommodate up to 1,000 vehicles per day. On Sept. 22 and
Sept. 23 a traffic count was taken on Centre Street just North
of the intersection of Parkwood
Crescent the estimated traffic
volumes were 1,700 vehicles on
the Monday and 2,270 on the
Tuesday.
The construction of 12 additional dwelling units will add
between 78 vehicles per day
to 100 vehicles per day to the
traffic volumes on Centre Street
which has the affect of increasing volumes by 4.46 per cent,
assuming that the 12 units will
generate the higher vehicle per
day, said Fischer.
Traffic volumes on Centre are
expected to increase as the community continues to grow but it
is due to function of the street
rather than the development
along it.

It makes me realize we would

Pioneers inspire others to

They plow the unbroken

They have the ability to press

The Bible says that without
vision, people perish. Thats
true of anything thats started

Taking apart a piece of Langdons history

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A little piece of Langdons history is being taken down
piece by piece. The barn sitting on the Fielder land has
been standing for over 100 years, and since the end of
August, Strathmore resident Matt Hyde has been working to
disassemble it.
It was just a matter of serendipity, he was there with the
enthusiasm and the desire to see that the wood got reused.
The barn is starting to sink under its own weight and Im
at an age where I certainly didnt want to do it myself, said
Bob Fielder.
Fielder had had offers in the past, but everyone had wanted
to take only what they wanted and leave the rest, leaving
him with a pile of unstable, and likely unwanted junk.
Fielders wife Lindas family emigrated to Langdon from
Iowa in 1916, and the barn was already standing on the
property. Over the years the barn has housed several horses,
and in later years tractors and other farm implements, now
mostly obsolete. Much of the wood is virtually unobtainable
now. The large roof trusses some 30 long, exterior wall
planks 1 x 12 x 12, floor planks 3 thick, all of which
were assembled together at a time when electric tools were
uncommon and electricity unavailable.
The barn had started to lean, and because of the rich family
history the Fielders didnt want to see the barn turn into a
dilapidated pile of wood sitting in the field.
It started off as me wanting to build a dining room table
for my wife. We ended up meeting Bob through his sister in
Strathmore, said Hyde.
His son Noah was shoveling Fielders sisters driveway,
helping her out where he could. The family met Bob at her
funeral, and he liked Noah enough that he invited them to
check out the farm and spend some time with them.
We came out and I saw the barn, and I just asked the
question if I could have some of the wood to build a dining
room table for my wife, and he said, you certainly can, but
the whole thing needs to come down, said Hyde.
And so it began. It has been him, friends from Strathmore
and family that have been working on disassembling the
barn.

A century old barn is being taken apart piece by piece in Langdon.

The barn was standing when Linda Fielders grandparents emigrated to Langdon from Iowa in 1916. Cowboy Lee Bittle, Linda Fielders grandfather circa 1940, with the barn standing behind him.

Photos Courtesy of Bob Fielder

Its been really neat to just see all the family

and friends pull together and attack this thing,
said Hyde.
By the end of the September long weekend
Hyde and his crew were on track, but then the
snowstorm and some not so great weekend
weather has really hindered the time frame. As
of Oct. 11 the crew had finished the hayloft floor,
and were beginning to take down the surrounding
walls.
Because were pulling every nail its just taking
longer. Its been amore painstaking process than
we thought it would be, said Hyde.
The agreement with the Fielders was that no
money would change hands, but it was up to
Hyde to completely disassemble the barn so that
the land beneath it could be reclaimed. Hyde

could the do what ever he likes with the barn and

everything in it.
This is an iconic moment . . . a virtual turning
back of time, with views revealed that have
remained hidden for the past century, said
Fielder.
There are very few structures such as this
left standing in our province and Linda and I
are pleased for the part we have played and the
privilege we have been afforded in assuring every
last stick of wood is recycled and given new life
as rustic furniture or home renovation materials
lasting another 100 years.
The Fielders are happy the barn will continue
on, in a new way, and Hyde is happy to have
the opportunity to create a beautiful dining room
table for his wife.

Harper Government announces common

sense firearms measures

YOUR AD COULD
BE HERE!

FROM THE OFFICE OF KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of
State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the introduction of the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act in the House of
Commons today.
This bill meets the Governments objective to
cut red tape for law-abiding firearms owners and
provide safe and simple firearms policies, Sorenson said. Changes to the Criminal Code and the
classification regime will enable the Government
to take steps to ensure the rights of lawful firearms owners are respected.
Quick Facts
The amendments to the Firearms Act and
Criminal Code will:
Create a six-month grace period at the end of
the five-year licence period to stop people from
immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork delays around license renewals;
Streamline the licensing system by eliminating
the Possession Only Licence (POL) and converting
all existing POLs to Possession and Acquisition Licences (PALs);

Make classroom participation in firearms safety training mandatory for first-time licence applicants;
Strengthen the Criminal Code provisions relating to orders prohibiting the possession of firearms where a person is convicted of a criminal
offence;
End needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making them a condition of
a licence for certain routine and lawful activities;
Provide for the discretionary authority of
Chief Firearms Officers to be subject to limit by
regulation;
Authorize firearms import information sharing when restricted and prohibited firearms are
imported into Canada by businesses; and,
Allow the Government to have the final say
on classification decisions, following the receipt of
independent expert advice.
Our Government has always stood up for lawabiding hunters, farmers and sport-shooters. This
legislation will simplify and provide clarity to the
firearms regime and reduce administrative burdens for law abiding firearms owners while protecting the safety of Canadians, said Sorenson.

Standing up against terrorism

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

As your Member of Parliament, I voted in support of Prime Minister Stephen Harpers motion
asking the House of Commons to confirm its
confidence for a Government decision to join the
United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and others, in launching air strikes against
ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant).
ISIL has established a jihad stretching over a
vast territory from which it intends to launch terrorist assaults, not merely against the region, but
on a global basis. In the territory ISIL has occupied, it has conducted a campaign of unspeakable
atrocities against the most innocent of people; it
has tortured and beheaded children; it has raped
and sold women into slavery; it has slaughtered
minorities; captured prisoners, and innocent civilians whose only crime is being different or thinking differently from ISIL.
ISIL has specifically targeted Canada and Cana-

dians, urging supporters to attack disbelieving

Canadians in any manner, vowing that that we
should not feel secure, even in our homes. Our
Government is committed to the safety and security of all Canadians. On Sept. 5, Prime Minister
Harper announced that members of the Canadian
Armed Forces, in a non-combat role, would advise
and assist security forces in Iraq battling the terrorists.
We will also contribute one air-to-air re-fuelling
aircraft, two Aurora surveillance aircraft, 6 CF-18s
and the necessary air crews and support personnel. In addition, we are extending the deployment,
in a non-combat role, of up to 69 members of the
Canadian Armed Forces to continue advising and
assisting security forces in Iraq. There will, however, be no ground combat mission, which is explicitly ruled out in the Motion. Canadas contributions are for a period of up to six months to be
followed by a review.
On Oct. 3, in the House of Commons Prime Minister Harper said, Let me assure Canadians that
the government is seized with the necessity of
avoiding a prolonged quagmire in this part of the

world. The actions we have announced are actions that will

be relatively easy to end. Indeed, we and our allies are acting
now precisely to avoid a situation that was clearly headed
to a wider, protracted and much more dangerous conflict.
The Prime Minister added, Let me also assure Canadians that the government will continue to be seized with the

prevent their return to Canada or to, where that is not possible, give greater tools to be able to charge and prosecute.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Tax hike concerns

To the Editor
My girlfriend and I come from Stony Plain, Alta.
and have lived here (Strathmore) for a couple months
now. We really enjoy our new home and couldnt be
more happier. It is the little things though at the end
of the day can have a person in disgust. Our taxes
here are over $800 more a year than they were at our
old home. Our house is the same size, same amenities
around and close to a major city I would agree that
both are very comparable.
What I saw in the newspaper this week (is council)
warning residents of a tax hike. Here is what Stony
has that Strathmore does not. We had garbage bins as
well as recycling bins. We didnt have to drive to the
site and sort our own recycling. If you make recycling
that much of an inconvenience, nobody will bother.
We also didnt have a three bag garbage rule that we
will pay a penalty for extra bags.
How is it that we are paying so much more for way
less services? What are you doing with the money so
wrong that other communities are not?
You should look at cutting costs rather than hiking
taxes to cover the costs for the four new additional
staff members that council approved. You are being
lazy with our money; the quick fix is to make us pay

more. You should invest a little more time into this

and come up with a better solution. You dont want to
dip into the savings (Financial Stabilization Reserve)
then why have a savings?
I work at a company that gives me an annual budget in the millions. By the time I actually get that
money it has been cut many times to where I may see
a third of what I need. I am told to make due with
what I have so I that is what I do. It is my responsibility to stay within this budget and if I dont then I will
be unemployed. So I will work a little harder and stay
a bit later every day to make up for the money I am
unable to get. That is what happens in the real world!
Now I dont expect you to work for free, but by
God that shouldnt be expected of us. We the residents have to work a little harder to make up for these
four new positions that make your workload lighter.
Who is making ours lighter?
This tax hike isnt going to break the two of us as
much as it will piss us off, but to the families who
dont have a double income and do have children this
is a slap in the face.
Sincerely,
Tyler Morgan,
Strathmore

Pulmonary hypertension (PH). Those
two words are the cause of an outpouring of love and support from Langdon
and surrounding communities. They are
also the two words that have changed
the lives of Heather and Phil Zloty forever.
Their daughter Olivia, 3, was diagnosed on Sept. 26 and immediately
flown to Edmonton with her family.
She has idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. The disease closes her lungs,
and her heart is trying to pump against
the lungs that are closing and cant. Her
heart is pumping so hard its actually
doubled in size and is now not pumping as hard. The doctors dont know the
cause: sometimes it can be from a missing valve or a deformity. Usually children with PH already have preexisting
conditions, but with Olivia there was
nothing.

Everything is where its supposed to

be and everything looks the way it is
supposed to, so they dont know why
she has it, said Heather Zloty.
Everything really began in May when
the Zlotys took Olivia to the doctor
because she was tired all the time. She
was in soccer and wouldnt run, and
seemed to have no energy. That doctor told them she was probably out of
shape from the winter. They went to
see another doctor when the symptoms
were persisting in the summer, and this
time were told that she was probably
just going through a phase.
It wasnt until they went back to yet
another doctor in September that answers came.
Originally the plan was to send Olivia for an X-Ray and schedule a cardiologist appointment in December. After
the X-Ray they were told that the cardiologist wanted to see them right away,
and have Olivia undergo an echocardiogram. The family figured they would

th

TIME:

get a call with results in a week or two,

but almost immediately they were told
they had to go to the Childrens Hospital. Olivia was put into quarantine in
the Intensive Care Unit, and later they
were flown to Edmonton.
Its hard we thought she was tired
but healthy, and now were coming
home with someone whos even sicker
than when we went in, said Zloty.
It was just so out of the blue, and
thats the big thing, none of us had
any idea something was wrong, and
especially not to this degree. Hearing
over and over again how serious it was
and your child is going to die, it was
(scary).
Olivia is now on a triple therapy:
two of the drugs are oral and one is a
pump, similar to an insulin pump, and
has to be on her all the time. If its off
for more than 30 minutes it can be fatal,
and only eight kids under the age of 14
in Canada are on it.
Hospitals dont stock it, so we were
told we always have to carry it with us.
If something happens and we have to
be sent to the hospital, nobody is going to have this drug because its just so
rare, said Zloty.
Thanks to a program set up by Dr.
Adatia, Olivias doctor in Edmonton,
the family doesnt need to worry about
the costs of the drug. The doctors dont
have a prognosis at this time, nor do
they know what dosage Olivia should

www.StrathmoreTimes.com

be on. Zloty said its a trial and error

thing, they dont even know if the meds
will work.
Olivias heart pressure at the hospital
was at 125. Normal high for a person is
30, and for a severe cause of pulmonary
hypertension its 75.
She could have just walked down the
hall and had a heart attack, so theyre
that high. Were just trying to keep her
calm, and it could be six months, it
could be 10 years, we have no idea, and
they have no idea either, said Zloty.
Phil is staying home for now so they
can figure things out, but plans to go
back to work in November, depending
on how the next couple of weeks go.
Olivia has to see the cardiologist every
two weeks here, then see an endocrinologist and do a liver x-ray, and every
three months they go back to Edmonton for more testing.
Theres just going to be so much
back and forth that for now he just
needs to stay home so we can figure it
out, said Zloty.
PH is a progressive disease that has
no cure. The only way doctors can test
for the condition is with a cathetor/
camera up through the patients groin
and into their heart, said Zloty, and
they can only do so every six months.
Well just take anything we have
with her and hope the medicine changes, said Zloty.

When friends and family heard the
news, they too were devastated and
were trying to figure out how to help.
When everything went down ... I
couldnt physically be there for them so
I wanted them to know that we were
all here for them, said JoAnna ONeill,
who has been friends with Heather
since they were five.
She created the Luv4Olivia w/pulmonary hypertension page through GoFundMe, http://www.gofundme.com/
f9ol5s with the goal of raising $50,000
for the Zlotys.
As of Oct. 14 just under $21,000 had
been raised.
The GoFundMe just seemed like a
way for everybody to rally together and
not have to be in the same place, said
ONeill.
Were just so amazed that everybody
has rallied together. Its that feeling of
you cant do anything to fix it and you
cant always be with them, so at least
were doing something that will help
make it a little less difficult, they dont
need to worry about those bills and all
those expenses.
Another way the community has
banded together is by creating a meal
train, which can be found at https://
www.mealtrain.com/invitation/Default.
aspx?id=m21ishj7hhct. Anyone interested can sign up, and pick a day to help
feed the family.
Instead of having like 10 lasagnas
show up on your doorstep it kind of
spaces it out so they get food on a
regular basis, it just kind of organizes
peoples need to bring you food, said
ONeill.
The meals are really good because
I dont have the brain capacity to deal
with groceries or deal with any of the
meals. That GoFundMe site, just so we
can start to pay for some of the stuff
we had to get and get her set up with,
said Zloty.
Theres also a plan to create T-Shirts
with the Luv4Olivia logo, and sell them
to raise addition funds.
Its just another symbol to show that
were there for them and hat we love
them, said ONeill.
On Nov. 15 there is also a FIT for Olivia- Living Well in Langdon fundraiser,
with a silent auction and raffle. Most of
the events can be found on the Langdon
The Good Luck Town Facebook page.
Zlotys advice for other parents is,
Keep pushing, trust your instincts. . We
knew something was wrong, and we
asked and we asked and we asked, we
knew something was wrong and everybody just kind of said, oh no its fine.
And all their answers could have been
right but it wasnt.
For now the Zlotys are trying to figure out what to do, and how to create
a new routine in their home that will
ensure Olivia is both safe and happy as
everyone learns to deal with the news.
The Zlotys also have two sons, sixmonths and two-years-old.

An evening of
entertainment
at Kims Caf
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Contributor

The Strathmore Musical
Arts Society is hoping to
bring even more great music to the community with
their new pub night style
evenings. The evenings will
take place at Kims Caf, beginning on Nov. 14.
We wanted to do like a
pub night and we decided that would be nice and
warm, and intimate and it
just kind of gives it a cozy
atmosphere. We want to try
doing that kind of evening
maybe once a month, said
Linda Storkson, president of
the musical arts society.
Were charging $20 for
just the music and then anybody that wants to eat food
can certainly help themselves because Kim will
have an awesome array of
things to have.
Boxcar, a newly formed
band will be the first entertainer to kick off the
new monthly events. Jason
Bertsch, Chris Lampard
and Blair Suntjens make up
the trio. Bertsch and Lampard, both originally from
Rosebud, have been playing electric guitar together
for 25 years. They recently
decided they would try an
acoustic band, and that was
when Suntjens, another mutual friend, joined up as the
singer.

We do mostly, I would

classic rock kind of stuff,
were not limited to any
style, any song that strikes
our fancy we learn and that
sort of thing, said Bertsch.
In September the band
took to the stage for the
first time at Rosebuds 15
Minutes of Fame festival.
Bertsch said Storkson was
there and she went up to
them right away to see if
they would come and play
in Strathmore.
I am excited to play there,
its something a little bit different doing the acoustic

Hilton
recognized
for farming
innovation
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A lifetime of farming, and making an
impact on the agriculture industry was
recognized in the form of Gordon Hilton
on Oct. 3 when he was inducted to the
Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame. Touted
as a true pioneer of the conservation tillage Hilton brought one of the first no-till
drills to Western Canada in 1980.
It is very satisfying to have results of
my vision for the future of agriculture in
western Canada recognized, said Hilton
about the honour.
It means that I was able to start the
movement to preserve the soil that we
had inherited and turn it over to the
next generation in better condition than
when we took it over. Some of the land
I started farming had blown quite badly
during the 1930s and even in 1964 land
was still blowing. I was determined to
stop this as it was so detrimental.
No-till farming is a way of growing
crops, or pasture, each year without disturbing, or destroying the soil. Soil erosion is a common problem that farmers
had to deal with, and by going the notill route it can essentially eliminate that
problem.
In the 80s, and beyond, Hilton worked
hard over to educate other farmers and
encourage them to also adopt conservation methods.
It is very satisfying to have results of
my vision for the future of agriculture
in western Canada recognized, said Hilton.
At 82 years of age it is gratifying to
know I have made a positive difference
to agriculture in my lifetime.
This is not the first time Hilton has
been inducted into a Hall of Fame for
his dedication to farming and soil conservation. In 1990 he was the first farmer ever inducted into the Soil Conserva-

Gordon Hilton (r) was inducted into the Alberta

Agriculture Hall of Fame on Oct. 3. He is the first
farmer from Wheatland County to make the list.

tion Council of Canadas Hall of Fame.

It is rewarding to be recognized at
the provincial level, where I was able to
invite to the induction, and thank, some
of the people who helped me with information and decisions I made through
the years, said Hilton.
We are the third generation of our
family to farm in Alberta, our sons and
their wives are the fourth generation
and now our grandson and his wife
are the fifth. We are encouraged by the
successful transition of our multi generation farm operation, of which we are
still active.
Hilton is the first farmer to be accepted
into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame
from Wheatland County. Russel Muenchrath, manager of agricultural services for
Wheatland County had brought Hiltons
name forward to the Ag. Services Board
for nomination to the Hall of Fame.
The reason he was nominated was
because Gordon (and his family) were
leaders in regards to soil conservation
and to the education of other farmers
and policy makers on the importance of
soil conservation to the agriculture industry, said Muenchrath.
In my opinion his efforts were instrumental in the acceptance of direct seeding and continuous cropping practices
which are now common place in Western Canada.
Alberta Agriculture inducts up to three
people every two years during the Hall
of Fame ceremony. Dr. Mohyuddin Mirza
and Curtis Clark, who was posthumously recognized, are also 2014 inductees.

Sponsored rings
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Curling Club is going to have a unique look on the house
rings for the upcoming season.
Whether youre a player or spectator,
you will see local sponsorships in the
rings with various colours that will really give a new, refreshing look to the
ice.
The idea came from our new ice
technicians, Ross Simmonds and Wendy Mitchell, out of Airdrie with Cool
Ice, said Craig Koch, Strathmore Curl-

ing Club president. So they brought it

up initially and I thought this sounds
like a good idea and obviously being
a facility that has to cover all our own
expenses its a way to raise some money to help with that plus provide some
pretty unique exposure for those businesses that wanted to participate.
The feedback from the board members was that some were all for it, but
some of them were looking at how cost
effective this new change would be.
It was pretty unanimous. It costs a
lot of money to run the rink every year
with staff and the board of directors.

S EAR

CALG SWIMW

LARG TLET ST

Everybody is a volunteer - none of us

are paid, said Koch. The power alone
for that facility alone is upwards of
$40,000 annually. We have to cover that
and we have to pay our lounge staff
and our ice technicians. Being able to
generate some more advertising and
sponsorship dollars is pretty crucial to
the future of the rink.
Koch believes that if it had not been
for sponsorship, the rink would not
have been viable to run.
I think they have 65-70 sponsors,
so they pay depending on their level
of advertising and they pay different
sponsorship amounts. So that certainly
makes a big difference when we have
to go and start covering our expenses
on annual basis, said Koch.
The cost to have advertising on the
rings is expensive for businesses, but

www.StrathmoreTimes.com

its only a one-time cost and then the

additional fees will be charged to the
curling club.
The cost per business is $395 and
its for the house, hog line and the two
rock markers and those graphics on the
screens are good for 7-10 years. Thats
a one time cost for the business and
then its $500 a year to the curling rink
for the in-ice advertising, said Koch.
The curling club is really thrilled
about the new feel in the rink, and
with sponsors getting on board, it just
adds to the excitement for curlers in
Strathmore.
Its going to give our rink a very
unique look, said Koch.
Koch would like to extend the message to Strathmore to encourage people to come down and try curling and
become active in a great sport.

Kings lack late game discipline

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings now know what its like to
play a lot of hockey after playing three games in
three nights on the Thanksgiving long weekend.
They were able to pick up one win and two losses, but discipline and defensive zone issues still
need to be worked on in order to compete with
teams such as Blackfalds, whom the Kings played
in their final game of the weekend.
It gives us an idea of our strengths and weaknesses. I think our strengths definitely outweigh
our weaknesses but its just a matter of developing consistency, said head coach Jeremy Blumes.
The things to improve upon are discipline, emotional control and our defensive zone coverage as
well as our penalty kill. On the plus side of things
weve got a lot of guys that can put points on the
board, contribute on offense and its just a matter
of getting everybody to understand that defense
wins championships.
Blumes believes that it was a good weekend in
the sense that it showed the guys how to compete
in the league and keep pace with some of the top
teams.
Were still going to be patient and were just going to keep working towards what we know that
we need to do better. I think if you look at it that
way it was a good weekend, it shows the guys
how close we really are, said Blumes. Were playing Blackfalds, a team that have won a provincial
championship last year, were tied with them in
the middle of the second period until we made
bad decisions. Were knocking on the door, but
making sure were getting contribution from the
20 guys in the line up versus a hand full of guys
on different nights.
In the first game of the weekend on Oct. 10 in
Banff, the Kings were handed a 6-5 defeat, but got
into penalty trouble. Frustrations on the coachs
part was felt by the players and they just could not
get back into the game.
The biggest thing is that we had penalty trou-

ble. We had a 4-2 lead going into the second period and we could not stay out of the box, myself
included became frustrated with the officiating,
said Blumes.
The power play opportunities were lopsided and
the Kings were not able to build any momentum
after the penalties started.
There are 10 power plays to four, we were penalized in the last 10 minutes of the third, the last
five minutes of the third and then the last two minutes which makes it tough to score that game-tying
goal, said Blumes.
Cody Willis and Keenan Ogle scored two goals
while Brayden Beckley notched one to provide the
offence in Banff.
The next night against Red Deer at home, the
team came out sharp and controlled the pace of
play but some defensive lapses led to some turnovers. Despite some zone miscues, the Kings were
able to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Vipers.
The first two periods we were sharp, everybody
was paying attention to detail, we were moving the
puck quickly. Red Deer is a good team but we were
the better team, said Blumes. The Saturday game
was good, the last five minutes of the third period
again there were undisciplined penalties that we
were taking in the offensive zone that were unnecessary and opened the door for them to make the
game more exciting then it really needed to be.
In the win, Beckley, Curtis Osborne, Sebastian
Turgeon and Brett Dumaine scored for the Kings.
On Sunday afternoon in Blackfalds, the Kings
fell behind and battled back time and time again,
but lost 9-5 to the Wranglers.
We allowed too many opportunities right in the
middle of the ice and a good team like that is going to capitalize, said Blumes.
Goal Scorers for the Kings were Beckley, Cody
Willis, Calvin Gordon, Kerby Ruzesky and Chris
Williams in the loss.
The Kings will be back in game action on Oct. 17
when they travel to High River to play the Flyers at
8 p.m. and then Oct. 18 when they play Coaldale
(8:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Spartans success
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School girls soccer team considers their season to be the most encouraging one in a long
time.
They were able to come out of the zone tournament in
Carstairs on Oct. 3-4 as the fourth seed. Then they were
able beat Highwood Heights of High River in the wild
card game 2-1 on Oct. 7 to advance to the semi-finals.
It was there that the Lady Spartans lost to Okotoks in
the semi-final on Oct. 9, but considering where they were
at in previous seasons, this was a vast improvement.
Semis were a new experience for us this year and it
really had changed our season, said head coach Kaitrin
Mcdonnell.
The team really had rallied around each other all season
and everyone had positive attitudes.
The positives were that we were still going as a team
and taking each game a half at a time, said McDonnell.
Our strengths were positive attitudes and perseverance.
McDonnell admits she is looking forward to coaching
this group again in the future as there is a lot of potential
and more promising players coming up.
All our girls are great team players. Im looking forward to coaching our Grade 10 and 11s in the future
seasons as the girls coming up are going to only get better within their years at SHS, said McDonnell. Watch for
Britney Davidson, Madelaine Fisk and Erica Barnson and
Kaleigh Barth to score many more goals and Sarah Moore
to hold our defensive ground.
However, there are going to be improvements made so
the girls do not get exhausted as fast on the field.
Conditioning we suffered some major losses on the
team to injuries, said McDonnell. We are hoping to run a
camp in August prior to school for ages 12 and up to get
more teen girls playing earlier in town.
McDonnell was really impressed with her team and
hopes to build on this for next season.
Overall the girls had strong development of their skills
continuously through the season, she said. We had a
great season and never quit.

The Wheatland Chiefs came
up victorious with a 5-3 win over
the Lacombe Rockets in their
home opener on Oct. 10 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
I thought we played good after the first half of the first period, second period I thought we
dominated them and took the
play and couldnt get too many
goals, but theyll come with hard
work, said head coach Devin
Olson.
The strengths for the Chiefs in
the win were that they were able
apply pressure and get the puck
to the net.
I think just hard work and
getting pucks to the net, then
out-battling them and using our

size. Once we started getting

the pucks deep, their defence
didnt have much left, especially
on a big ice like this where you
can make them skate and wear
them down, said Olson. We
didnt have really any (players)
take the night off. I think it was
an all around effort and I think
thats how were going to have to
play and use our speed and size
(and) the goals will come.
Jayden Smith and Jason Hopson each score twice, while
Kody Hammond also tallied for
Wheatland.
The Chiefs played on Sunday,
Oct. 12 in Blackie and won 3-2
over the Foothills Bisons.
Jayse Wilson, Hobson and
Smith scored for the local midget
double A team.
Their next game will be Oct.

18 in Taber (8 p.m.) and Oct. 19

in Medicine Hat (2:15 p.m.).
Meanwhile, the Wheatland
Warriors won both of their road
games on the long weekend as
they beat the Badlands Longhorns 3-2 on Oct. 11 and the
Medicine Hat Venom 5-2 the following day.
The local bantam double-A
will play their next game will be
Oct. 18 in Lethbridge (2:15 p.m.)

The Wheatland Braves beat

of the season, said Mertz.

The team goals change every year as
the coaches look where improvements
can be made and then develop the athletes around them.
We have new ones that were adding
this year, were going to be including a
goal (of) increasing nutritional awareness within our athletes as well as bringing in more of a dry-land component
into our training, said Mertz. So were
going to be increasing our activation
strategies within the training and swim
meets.
Since the club started, the objective
has been to get their swimmers to participate other sports over the summer so
they stay active and are prepared for the
swim season.
One of the goals we have within
our club is to make sure our kids are
involved in sport, and one of the longterm athlete development goals within
the sport of swimming is to incorporate
multi sport in our athletes, said Mertz.
This is where our club is different from
some the other clubs in Calgary because
we only have our top groups train five
times a week.
According to Mertz playing in more
sports will allow for them to train their
bodies properly for techniques that
swimming uses and prevent injuries.
Swimming is a very repetitive sport
on your body in terms of using your
arms a lot or some of the rotation movements, said Mertz So as a part of how
the sport has changed in general is were
trying to incorporate some (injury) prevention and really one of the best ways
we could do that is to implement dryland.
As coach of the team, she wants to
grow the interest of swimming with the
kids and wants them to improve and
strive to be better.
I look for the kids to always strive to
do better then they did last year and for
us coaches to push them where they believe they can go. The Strathmore Silver
Sharks really support celebrating our
successes of encouraging teammates,
said Mertz.
She admits, too, that she sets high expectations for her swimmers. They have
put the effort in to work towards their
own goals, and the results will show
with the club being successful.
The Silver Sharks first meet is on Oct.
25-26 in Lethbridge. The club will host
their first team-building mini-meet on
Dec. 3 in Strathmore.

Bisons need better starts

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons battled back to make
games interesting, but slow starts are
what cost them wins this past weekend
at the Strathmore Family Centre.
They were able to tie the CAC Gregg
Distributors 3-3 on Oct. 11, and lost to
Sherwood Park 6-3 the following day.
On Sunday, Sherwood Park took advantage of the Bisons inconsistent start
and ultimately they felt the effects of it
as they could not catch up.
I dont think we were prepared
enough at the start, so we didnt have
a good first period. I think we sat back
on our heels and they took a lot of the
game to us, said Bisons assistant coach
Sandy Henry. In the second period
we found some life and scored three
straight goals, got the lead and things
are going pretty good. Then we got a
little undisciplined and (penalties) kills
our momentum.
As a result, the Bisons seemed to have
a difficult time getting their legs back to
attempt a comeback and gave Sherwood
Park most of the momentum, where
they capitalized.
We never think we dont work hard
enough or anything like that. I think our
work ethic is fine. Weve got to improve
our skills a little bit. We got to be able to
play 5-on-5 or take our power play op-

portunities as oppose to giving them opportunities at critical time, said Henry.

Zachary Cox, Gary Haden and Trygve
Many Guns scored in the loss.
The Bisons came out and played an
energetic game on Saturday versus CAC
and were able to show resiliency to battle back to get a tie game.
It was a real aggressive, high-energy
game. Again we didnt get (off to a good
start in) first period good and left it behind 1-0. We came out in the second,
even though we killed a lot of penalties,
we got a goal to tie it, said Henry. We
go into third evened up and they got
one with three minutes left, and with a
1:30 left, we got our goal back. Thats
a positive step for us. I think weve got
that resiliency and now we got to find
consistency.
Kyle Gordon, Many Guns and Davis
Sheldon scored in the tie.
The difference in the games was that
Bisons found ways to prevent chances
in the first game and in the second game
found ways to give up opportunities.
I dont think we moved the puck as
good (on Sunday) as we did (Saturday),
which (is soemthing) we work on every
day, said Henry.
The Bisons have two home games this
weekend starting with the Knights of
Columbus Pats on Oct. 18 (5:15 p.m.)
and Oct. 19 (2 p.m.) versus Medicine
Hat at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Emotional zone run for Spartans

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School Spartans cross
country team placed second in the zone race on
Oct. 8 in Canmore. They will be sending eight runners for provincials on Oct. 18 in Okotoks.
Zones will be in Canmore again.
Zones have been there for quite a few years
now and its a mountain course. The mountain
was pretty tough for some kids, their strategy had
to be reworked as they were running it because
they change the course every year, said Paul Sonsteby, Spartans coach.
It started at a hill and you basically had 200
meters of flat and then way up a hill. Depending
on the course you were running and for all the
races I was at the top of that hill looking down
watching the racer come towards us and you just
watched kids get bagged, said Sonsteby.
He felt that his teamteams athletism worked to
their advantage, but the most skilled runners felt
it was tough.
We were all athletes so were fit enough and
some, like Maria Fanning and Liam Schoepp, are
quite strong hill runners, but it was tough (for
them) that way. We had some good sprints at the
end with some good finishes, said Sonsteby.
Sonsteby saw probably one of the most dynamic
finishes come out of Karly Larson, who was sprintfor-sprint with another runner, but ultimately used
her athletic ability to finish one spot better.
Karly Larson, who is our female team captain,
she has made it to provincials every year, had one
of the best runs I have ever seen as a coach. She
was in a tough battle, in fifth for a chunk of the
race and looked a little winded the second time
up the hill but kept in it strong, said Sonsteby
There was a 200 meter sprint on a gradual up
hill and she dove into the sprint ... she was putting on a strong sprint and sure enough she got in
front ... and got fourth place.
Larson was the fastest Spartan, running the
track in 18 minutes.
For the team that was the highlight of the day
but sending eight to provincials is a huge accomplishment and one that Sonsteby is proud of.
So we have a runner going in every single category which is special, but a really neat aspect is
weve got these three strong runners from the senior boys, Kyle Foster, Brendan Roberts and Liam
Schoepp and theyve pushed each other all season. Sure enough Kyle came 10th, Brendan came

Cougars finish strong

The Strathmore High School Spartans Cross Country team finished second overall at zones in Canmore on Oct. 8. They are
sending eight runners on to Provincials on Oct. 18 in Okotoks.

11th and Liam came 18th and all three boys qualified for provincials, said Sonsteby.
Sonsteby wanted to give honourable mentions
to a few members of the team that wont be going to provincials - Alex Kim, Lane Anderson and
Tamara Adamschuk - for having their best runs of
the year and giving it their utmost.
As for provincials, the Spartans are hoping to at
least be in the Top 10 by the events end.
Provincials is a tough race, there are kids who
are from run clubs (and) thats all they do. Its
tricky, we very rarely have a runner that cracks the
Top 10 and what Id like to see is personal bests
for these eight runners, said Sonsteby.
The eight runners that will be making the trip
to provincials are seniors: Liam Schoepp, Brendan
Roberts, Kyle Foster and Karly Larson; intermediate: Maria Fanning, Maik Hoensch, Martina Vergouwen and Mackenzie Bain.

most in a sport like cross

country, if youre willing to
giving it everything you got
youll finish relatively well.
The team had a lot of
returning runners, many
of whom had experienced
Canmore last year and they
knew what to expect.
The strength of the track
for the Cougars was the
homestretch to the finish
line as they were able to
sprint past other participants.
The best was usually
when you got to the top of
the hill, you had a little bit
of flat and then you had a
big hill down and then a
sprint at the end. So we did
really well at the last 100
meters, most of our kids
passed two or three (other)
kids on that last sprint, said
Laslo.
Crowther was well known
all season to have strong
runners that finished well.
This year, the group were
really strong finishers even
though the hill at the beginning tired us out a little. Its
just more our mental toughness more than anything to
push ourselves at the very
end of a race, said Laslo.
The top finisher on the
team was Cam McInnis who
finished eight in his second
go around at zones.

The Crowther Memorial
Junior High Schools cross
country team ended their
season with a seventh place
finish at the zones in Canmore on Oct. 8.
We did pretty well. Were
always up against a bit of a
disadvantage because its always in Canmore and were
more flat-land runners, but
generally I think we had a
pretty strong season, said
CMJHS Cross Country coach
Matthew Laslo. We had a
few kids finish in the Top
10 which is always a good
thing because there is usually 90 kids running and the
Grade 7/8 boys and girls
ran their butts off. We finished strong (and) had lots
of compliments from other
coaches about how strong
we finished running so that
was pretty awesome.
Laslo really admired the
work ethic of the kids and
how they were able to adapt
to a mountain track.
Its just different because
we train here and the best
hill we got for training on
is Dinosaur Hill, going from
that to an actual mountain
is a big difference, said
Laslo. The kids work really
hard and thats what matters

Peewees eye first place; seniors lose heartbreaker

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartans will have to wait until the last
week of the regular season to determine if they will finish first
in the division and have home field advantage in the playoffs.
The peewee football team put on another offensive clinic
on route to a 32-12 victory over the Red Deer Steelers on Oct.
11 in Strathmore.
It was a tougher matchup than anticipated, said head
coach Clinton Bean. They came out with a different strategy,
having played us before in the preseason they had some idea
how we play.
Bean admits that they were dealing with key injuries and
had an unusually slow start, but the offensive did have an
effective game when points needed to be put on the board.
We were also dealing with some important injuries. It
was a slow start but we managed to recover and pull out the
win, said Bean. Running back, Angelina Palardy was key in
the victory, she scored four touchdowns and got critical first
downs when we needed them.
There were some mental lapses in the game, but being
a solid team throughout the line-up, they were able work
through them.
We also had to shake off some mental mistakes as we had
two touchdowns called back on penalties (but) because we

are a tight team we just shook it off and kept pressing, said
Bean.
Next up for the peewees is a road contest in Rocky Mountain this Saturday, Oct. 18 (11 a.m.). If they win, then they
will clinch first place and have home field advantage in the
playoffs.
As for the Strathmore Spartans high school football team,
they lost a nail-biter to Drumheller 20-19. Despite the loss,
they are off to the postseason.
We were actually inside the 12-yard line with 1:40 left and
had a chance to win it. (We) actually just fumbled the ball and
turned it over and that costs us the game, said coach Chuck
Holloway. The overall attitude was good. We still came a little
flat from the beginning, but they actually had game-day intensity and worked together.
The Spartans made the playoffs as the fourth seed and if
they are mentally strong then they will give themselves a
chance.
We can improve upon capitalizing on the opportunities
presented at hand and hold on the ball with two hands, said
Holloway.
The postseason will begin this Friday, Oct. 17 in Medicine
Hat at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the bantams suffered a 33-14 loss in Drumheller, but will open their playoffs against Stettler on Oct. 25 in
Strathmore.

It is with great sadness that

we announce the passing of a loving husband,
father, grandfather and great grandfather. David Riess passed away peacefully on October
5th with family by his side. David is survived
by his loving wife Jette (nee Henriksen) of over
48 years and his two sons Kelly (Traci) and Kenneth (Lisa); grandchildren Michael (Elizabeth),
Erica and Colton and great grandchildren Dawson, Shaelynn, Raelee and Bodie. David will also
be missed by his four-legged buddies, Norman
and Tucker. David was born on the family homestead in Birch Creek, SK to parents John and
Hilma (nee Erickson) and was the second oldest
of five children (Darlene, Inga, Glen and Virgil).
At a young age, David moved to Kindersley, SK
where he worked as a farmhand. Then in 1962,
he moved to Calgary (Bowness) and married
Jette on June 4, 1966. David started his trucking career as a mobile home transport driver. He
then became an owner/operator and worked for
numerous trucking companies doing long haul
work throughout North America. David loved
to tell stories about his trucking adventures and
could remember every mile he drove and every
load he hauled. In 1975 the family moved to High
River, AB where the two boys were raised. Then,
in 1992, David and Jette moved to Calgary (Erinwoods). In 1995 they moved to Grandview, MB
and in 2006, moved to Kelly and Tracis farm near
Strathmore, AB where he spent his final years
helping Kelly with farming. David was a wonderful man and touched the lives of all who knew
him. He will be remembered for his warm smile;
kindness and generosity; his loving and caring
ways and for giving his time freely to anyone
who asked for a hand. David had a great sense
of humor and was known for telling numerous
jokes and stories. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made directly to either Crohns and Colitis
Canada (3100, 246 Stewart Green SW, Calgary,
