The chance to work with Billy Boy Arnold on this project was something I jumped on without a moments thought.
Billy wanted to record an album full of songs that he had always loved, in a few diferent genres. We talked about tunes,
nally whittling it down to these 14 that include some Billy Boy originals, early R&B songs, blues/jazz standards and
some Sixties and Seventies rare soul gems. To say this was a huge undertaking was an understatement! But Billy Boys
condence in my ability to pull it all together made me ready for the challenge.
For those not completely aware of Billy Boys history heres a brief overview. William Billy Boy Arnold was
born in Chicago in 1935. As a young boy he became enamoured with the blues he heard on jukeboxes and especially
enraptured by the sound of the blues harmonica by players like John Lee Sonny Boy Williamson. One afternoon, with his
childhood friends, he knocked on Sonny Boys door and they were invited in. Mister Williamson played for the boys, and at
that moment it started a spark in Billy Boys heart. Before long he was playing harp in Bo Diddleys band and played on Bos
Im a Man, one of Chicago blues most legendary recordings.
It was a common practice at recording sessions in those days for backup musicians to ll spare session time
by recording their own tunes. On the day Bo Diddleys band recorded Im a Man, Billy Boy Arnold got to use spare studio
time to record a tune hed written, called You Got To Love Me, kickstarting his solo career. More recordings followed,
including I Wish You Would, which went down in blues history as a classic Chicago blues song and has since been
recorded by a long list of artists including The Yardbirds and David Bowie.
Billy Boy has written many great Chicago blues classics and his Vee Jay label singles from the 50s are highly
sought by record collectors. Billy took some years of from music when the blues scene slowed, but returned and has now
been touring the world for many decades playing and singing his deep blues. He is truly a living legend.
Billy Boys talent as a songwriter, singer, harp master and blues historian is still in full swing and here, on this album,
he demonstrates his air and love for many diferent facets of the blues. At 79 he shows no sign of slowing down and his
life of clean living has left him sharp, focused and with an astounding memory of the blues scene in Chicago from
his childhood to the present.
This recording is surely a remarkable achievement. So sit back and listen to Billy Boy sing and play the blues
and all the related styles he has loved over the years. - Duke Robillard
