ESCP EUROPE BUSINESS SCHOOL
ESCP Europe, the Worlds First Business School, was
founded in 1819 by a group of economic scholars and
businessmen, including the well-known economist Jean-
Baptiste Say and the celebrated trader Vital Roux. Say was
an advocate of economic liberalism and is often credited
with having coined the concept of entrepreneurship as
early as 1800. Roux is particularly known for having largely
contributed to the elaboration of the Commercial Code
in 1807, as well as for his up-front thinking in innovative
pedagogy. One can therefore argue that the creation of
ESCP Europe represented the invention of the business
school concept.
1819 ESCP Europe is established by a group of
economic scholars and businessmen in Paris.
It becomes the Worlds First Business School.
1921 ESCP Europe celebrates its 100th anniversary,
postponed due to the post-war crisis, in the
vast auditorium of the Sorbonne.
1973 The concept of a multi-campus business
school is born through the inauguration of
campuses in Germany and the United Kingdom.
1988 The School opens its 4th campus in Madrid.
2004 We enter Italy with a 5th campus in Torino.
Paris:
The Paris campus is conveniently located in the centre of the city. It is the largest of ESCP Europes ve
locations, hosting the greatest number of faculty and students as well as one of the most prestigious
Grandes Ecoles in the country. With extensive on-campus facilities and several student clubs and
associations, a strong sense of school spirit and community prevails.
London:
Located in West Hampstead in northwest London, this campus offers students state-of-the-art
facilities in a traditional Victorian building. The bright city lights and the business community are only a
tube ride away, while the fashionable area of West Hampstead offers a broad cultural experience away
from the hustle and bustle of inner-city life.
Berlin:
The Berlin campus is located close to one of the historical centrepieces of Berlin, the Charlottenburg
Palace. Located in baroque gardens, it overlooks the Schools beautiful late-19th century building.
Throughout the year, there are events and conferences on the latest business issues. The Berlin
campus is a staatlich anerkannte wissenschaftliche Hochschule in Germany.
Madrid:
Located only a couple of metres away from the National Park of Monte del Prado, the Madrid campus
is an ideal place for students to focus on their studies and professional development. The surrounding
gardens and parks set the scene for the hard work and personal reection necessary during the
development of managerial competences.
Torino:
The Torino campus is located in a beautiful building with modern facilities. Torino is one of the main
business centres of the Italian economy and home to many architectural masterpieces. It is also one of
the favourite student cities in Italy. The Torino campus has strong relationships with a number of Italian
and international companies, which contribute to its governance.
Five campuses in major European cities
The Schools legal support is provided by the Chamber of Commerce
and Industry of the Paris Ile-de-France region, which is a member
of the Charity, the Asociacin and the Verein, and one of the three
founding members of the Fondazione and the Associazione.
The European Board formulates the Schools strategy. It brings
together representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
of the Paris Ile-de-France region, of the national boards and of the
Advisory Board.
This Advisory Board is composed of company executives and
representatives of the economic, institutional and cultural worlds.
It aims to present the School with different perspectives and ensure
that academic programmes are in line with tomorrows corporate
challenges.
Created in 2005, the ESCP Europe Foundation provides active
support for the Schools development projects.
ESCP Europe Business School
is a composite entity, bringing
together the Chamber of Commerce
and Industry of the Paris Ile-de-
France region in France; a charity
in the United Kingdom; a Verein in
Germany; an Asociacin in Spain;
and a Fondazione coupled with an

EXECUTIVE MASTER
IN ENERGY
MANAGEMENT
The integrated EMEM Consultancy Project is a key element of the programme,
designed to provide participants with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary learning
experience. It is not only an opportunity to solve a real-life challenge posed by a
company; this 8- to 10-month team project will allow EMEM participants to use and
to consolidate their understanding of the concepts and tools presented during the
programme:
In the energy business context
In collaboration with her/his employer
In collaboration with a new company
With a company start-up
Participants are expected to perform a group analysis of the problems and
opportunities faced by a client company, producing a series of recommendations
that can be implemented to meet the strategic challenge at hand. Each team
will be supervised by a company representative, ensuring the clients objectives
and guidelines are adhered to. Participants will also work with an ESCP Europe
professor to ensure the academic requirements are met.
The company sponsor receives a comprehensive written report, and the conclusions
of the project are presented to an academic jury.
THE EMEM CONSULTANCY PROJECT
Demand Side Management (DSM) in the Electricity
Industry: Evaluation of the business potential for
aggregated demand response in UK
Our project focused on a specic area of DSM known as
aggregated demand response, which provides system services to
the transmission grid operator on the demand side. Furthermore,
our efforts concentrated on the UK market a core market for our
project sponsor from a geographical point of view, and one of the
most developed DSM markets in Europe.
During the project, we carried out extensive research in the
market as a whole, narrowing the focus down to aggregation and
evaluating the potential of DSM from system and commercial
perspectives. We also tried to explore the exciting future of DSM
in the context of the smart future of the grid. Finally, we put that
knowledge into action, developing a business model and a plan to
test our assumptions and see whether the aggregation looks as
attractive in the unforgiving nancial landscape.
Our team was as diverse as it could get for its size: three people,
three nationalities, two different backgrounds (engineering and
nance), and three different companies operating in three different
elds. And not to forget that all three of us were working abroad in
three different countries, using a language that is not our native.
How does that come together? Our common denominators were
our passion for energy, keen interest in business and - not to be
underestimated - our common lack of fear towards numbers
(no surprise given our backgrounds). As it happened, there was
rather little time for thinking about differences; our full-time jobs
combined with the EMEM programme and the project proved to be
the perfect medicine to forget anything else but the common goal
when deadlines loomed on the horizon.
Looking back, we had fun preparing our project including the
research and business plan - for a subject we barely knew in
the beginning, working together via Skype instead of sitting in a
conference room. At the end, the knowledge and recognition we
gained for our efforts, both from academics and our sponsor,
meant the hard work was well worth our time.

ALUMNI ON THE GO
I chose this programme because I wanted to establish my prior energy sector
experience with an appropriate diploma. Furthermore, with my other higher
education diplomas being from the US, I wanted to be part of an alumni network
that was well-established in both my home country of France and throughout
Europe. These criteria naturally led me to the ESCP Europes Executive Master
in Energy Management.
Already having a MBA in Finance from 1994, I was a bit apprehensive about
some of the material being redundant; these fears proved unfounded, as the
programmes content in areas such as economics or project nance was
specically tailored to the needs of the energy sector.
Upon leaving the programme, I have taken a position in London and become
involved in the local ESCP Europe alumni community. Im happy to report that it
is just as vibrant as the one in France!
After twelve years working with passion in the oil and gas business, I wanted
to broaden my knowledge, skills and responsibilities. The Executive Master in
Energy Management was the perfect match for my expectations.
The programme was a great opportunity to share my own views and interact
with a very international group of students and professors. Thanks to the EMEM,
I now have the tools and references to better understand the challenges the
energy sector will have to face in the future.
I chose this specic programme for several reasons, the rst of which
obviously being my interest in widening my understanding of the energy
industry as a whole. Throughout the course I conrmed that my work
experience in the offshore wind sector represented only a small fraction
of what energy issues encompass.
The EMEM provided a good balance between industry topics, general
management subjects and case studies, as well as an ideal mix of formal
lectures by ESCP Europe faculty and talks with industry experts on various
topics. My colleagues had a variety of different nationalities and backgrounds,
which contributed greatly to the international feel of the programme, in addition to
the fact that it was split between the Schools different campuses with an
additional module at MDI in India.
This was my rst experience of studying while working, and I must confess that
I found it very useful: I was able to put into practice things I learnt right after
hearing about them for the rst time in class. I am sure the skills I developed
throughout the course will be useful for my future transition from technical to
managerial roles.
The Executive Master in Energy Management at ESCP Europe allowed me to
complement my previous engineering education and experience with additional
management and business-related skills. Today, my mind is unquestionably
more open to see the world in a different way, and I believe that this course
allowed me to understand it better, too. Thanks to the EMEM, I feel that I am
denitely more equipped to tackle problems when they arise and would be
pleased to go back in time to be able to enjoy every single moment again.

IN ENERGY
MANAGEMENT
About the RCEM
Few would dispute the assertion that we are entering a
new energy era: global demand for oil booms as supplies
dwindle; price volatility and geopolitical instability are
increasingly common, as are globalisation and market
deregulation; and all the while environmental concerns
grow. Both collectively and individually these factors call
for a signicant restructuring of the energy sector to
improve efciency and develop new sustainable energy
sources.
The challenge is primarily technological but also
managerial. Considering the amount of capital needed
to boost energy supplies and promote the necessary
technological innovations in a world of high uncertainty,
expertise in project management, supply chain, nance,
human resource and organisational management are of the
utmost importance for decision making and forming policy.
Bringing together the expertise of its faculty and its many
external international associates, the objective of the
Research Centre for Energy Management (RCEM) at ESCP
Europe Business School is to cooperate with, and possibly
assist, key industry players to facilitate the integration of
managerial and technological skills. The results of RCEMs
research will become available to the public through
publications, workshops and conferences, educational
programmes and other public outreach activities. Research
at RCEM will be enhanced through direct cooperation
with government agencies, and academic and industry
associates from across the globe.
