BASES DE DATOS PARA INVESTIGACION ECONOMICA 1. MEDLINE http://medline.cos.com/
Community of Science, Inc. (COS) offers a powerful, Web-based version of MEDLINE. Compiled by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and published on the World Wide Web through COS, MEDLINE is the worlds most comprehensive source of life sciences and biomedical bibliographic information. It contains nearly 11 million records from more than 7,300 different publications dating from 1965-present. MEDLINE is updated weekly. Users can select from a variety of search interfaces ranging from a natural language interface to a command-line interface Query Track stores searches throughout each online session so users can return easily to previous searches depending on their experience

level. Results can be downloaded in a variety of formats, including those of the most popular citation management software.
2. NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY http://www.nal.usda.gov/
The second database is NAL's Article Citation Database, also known as: "Journal Articles". It includes citations, many with abstracts, to journal articles (see Journals Indexed in AGRICOLA), book chapters, reports, and reprints, selected primarily from the materials found in the NAL Catalog. Both data sets are updated daily with newly cataloged and indexed materials. AGRICOLA is searchable via the Web using the Endeavor "WebVoyage" gateway.
6
3. AGRICOLA http://agricola.nal.usda.gov/ What Is AGRICOLA?
AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a bibliographic database of citations to the agricultural literature created by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its cooperators. Production of these records in electronic form began in 1970, but the database covers materials in all formats, including printed works from the 15th century. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences. Although the AGRICOLA database does not contain the materials, thousands of AGRICOLA records are linked to full-text documents online, with new links added daily. AGRICOLA is searchable on the World Wide Web. For information on how to obtain library materials, see How to request materials from NAL.
The AGRICOLA database is organized into two bibliographic data sets. Each data set may be searched separately, or they may both be searched together. One data set is the NAL Online Public Access Catalog, known as "NAL Catalog", containing citations to books, audiovisual materials, serial publications, and other materials in the NAL collection. AGRICOLA also contains some bibliographic records for items cataloged by other libraries but not held in NAL's collection.

6. PROQUEST UMI http://www.umi.com/umi/ When University Microfilms (later known as UMI) first opened its doors in 1938, founder Eugene Power was racing against time. War clouds threatened the treasures of scholarship in the British Museum, and Power was determined to preserve them on microfilm. The result was UMI's first (and only) product that year: Early English Books, the ongoing microfilm edition of the printed works listed in Short-Title Catalogue I (Pollard & Redgrave) and Short-Title Catalogue II (Wing). Soon afterwards, Power began gathering, indexing, filming, and republishing doctoral dissertations in microform and print. By 2000, our Dissertation Abstracts database archived over 1.6 million dissertations and master's theses. Some one million of them are available in full text in print, microform, and digital format. The UMI microfilm vault-now one of ProQuest Information and Learning's assets- constitutes the largest commercially available microform collection in the world. Its 5.5 billion page images deliver 500 years of information, drawn from thousands of literary, journalistic, and scholarly works. Every year we add another 37 million images of contemporary information. Today we digitize both current and retrospective content for inclusion in the ProQuest Digital Vault. Still, we continue to produce many products in microform and print, such as research collections, directories, dissertations, newspapers, periodicals, indexes, and out-of- print books.

(Research Papers in Economics) is a collaborative effort of over 100 volunteers in 47 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The heart of the project is a decentralized database of working papers, journal articles and software components. All RePEc material is freely available. You may add your own materials to RePEc through a department or institutional archive -- all institutions are welcome to join and contribute their materials by establishing and maintaining their own RePEc archive. If your institution does not yet participate in RePEc, you may submit your own papers to EconWPA (the Economics Working Paper Archive), and they will automatically be included in RePEc. RePEc does not support personal archives (only institutional archives). RePEc now collaborates with the American Economic Association's EconLit database to provide content from leading universities' working paper series to EconLit. If your university does not contribute its working paper series to RePEc, please contact us for assistance, or view the "step by step" instructions at IDEAS. Please note that RePEc does not contain full-text journal articles; RePEc services provide links to many full text articles, but you may need a personal or institutional subscription to follow those links. If a working paper or journal article is not indicated as "downloadable", please contact the author or publisher for assistance.

Library Journal / September 1, 2003 Database & Disc Reviews
WDI Online World Bank 202-473-5149 , pubrights@worldbank.org publications.worldbank.org/WDI
Date reviewed: 07/07/03 Price: Based on population served (FTE for university libraries; population served for public and special libraries; discounts are available for developing-country residents).
WDI Online is the World Bank's latest offering of its leading dataset The World Development Indicators (WDI). Researchers who have relied on the World Development Indicators will welcome the data now available via the web. WDI will delight new users as well, with an interface that facilitates elegant results. While the World Bank published an electronic version of the data on CD-ROM in 1997, WDI Online offers networking capability that enhances accessibility of the data. Search results demonstrate that careful
30
thought was given to the design and functionality of the web interface.
The comprehensive coverage of data includes 208 indicators on 575 countries, with 18 regional and income groups for more than 40 years where data is available. WDI Online's search interface is simple to use and logically presented. Countries and regions are arranged alphabetically. Users have the option of selecting indicators from an alphabetical list or from a hierarchy of data points called a tree view. The outermost layer of the tree view is broken into five categories: People, Environment, Economy, States and Markets, and Global Links. Labels within the hierarchy are meaningful enough so users who do not know the specific name of an indicator can locate it easily.
A simple search comparing illiteracy rates of adult females in various countries illustrates the straightforward design of the search function. After choosing the data-point, illiteracy rate, adult female (percentage of females aged 15 and over), I selected Cuba, the United States, Iraq, Israel, and North Korea and then selected the time period 1960-2001 (described as all available years). The View Results options were just as pleasing as the seamless search function. Users may select scaling options in units, thousands, millions, or billions. Viewing options include raw data, percentage change, or annual index. Finally, the database allows for orientation of data by country or series. While presentation of the data is only available in chart format, exporting to Excel or ASCII is simple so that the data can be converted easily into a graph.
