The Triple Energizer

The Triple Energizer has 5 main

functions:

Distribute Yuan qi to enable digestion
The Triple Energizer spreads Yuan qi from the ming men to the 5 yin and 6 yang organs, from
which it enters the 12 channels and emerges at the source points. Yuan qi activates all
physiological functions of the body and provides heat for digestion and transformation of food.
In this way, the TE affects digestion.

Ensure the smooth movement of qi
The TE controls the movement of various types of qi at various stages of energy production, in
particular ensuring that the various types of qi are let out in a smooth way.
The Upper Burner lets out Wei qi (directing it to the Lung)
The Middle Burner lets out Nutritive qi (directing it to all the organs)
The Lower Burner lets out Body Fluids (directing them to the Bladder)

Distribute Fluids via the Upper Burner
The Upper Burner is like a Mist
The Upper Burner is in charge of distributing fluids all over the body by the Lungs in the form
of fine vapor. This is an aspect of the LU dispersing function.

Digest Food and Drink via the Middle Burner
The Middle Burner is like a Maceration Chamber or Bubbling Cauldron
The middle burners job is to digest and transport food and drink and to transport the
nourishment extracted to all parts of the body.

Excretion via the Lower Burner
The Lower Burner is like a Ditch. The Lower Burners job is to separate the essences of food
into a clean and dirty part and to excrete the dirty part.

Summary of the Indications of the points
and the functions

Reducing fever. Many of its points are indicated for febrile diseases, esp. when due to
exterior pathogenic factors. According to the 4 levels, the TE channel treats fevers at
the Wei and qi levels while the Pericardium treats fevers at the Ying and Blood levels,
although the most distal points of the TE channel (where the PC and TE channels
converge) are able to treat both. According to the 6 stages, several points of the
channel are indicated for alternating chills and fever and malaria, the characteristic
indications of shaoyang pattern.
Benefiting the ears.
Clearing Heat from the neck, throat and tongue.
Soothing the Heart and calming the Spirit (due to relationship with pericardium)

1. Begins at TE 1 and continues up the posterior surface of the forearm and upper arm to TE 14
at the shoulder.

2. From TE 14 a deep pathway travels to TE 15 (via SI 12), meets the posterior median line at
GV then passes over the shoulder to GB 21 and to ST 12 in the supra-clavicular fossa.

3. From ST 12 it travels down to CV 17 to connect with the pericardium and the upper jiao,
then penetrates the diaphragm and travels into the middle and lower jiaos, connecting with CV
12 and CV 7.

4. A second deep branch leaves CV 17, travels back to ST 12, then continues up the lateral
aspect of the neck to TE 16 at the posterior border of the ear.


The Triple Energizer Channel

5. The meridian runs superficially behind the ear to TE 20. Here a deep pathway passes to GB
6, 5, 4 on the forehead and then loops over the cheek to link with SI 18.

6. A deep branch leaves TE 17 and runs through the ear to emerge at SI 19, linking with GB 3
and TE 21, 22. It crosses over to TE 23 and GB 1 at the lateral canthus of the eye.

7. Historical texts say that the TE meridian connects with BL 53 and follows the course of the
Bladder meridian to link with the bladder itself.

Divergent Channel

This separates from the primary meridian at the vertex,
descends into the supraclavicular fossa,
travels across the upper/middle/lower burners of the TE,
and finally disperses in the chest.

Luo Channel

This leaves the primary meridian at TE 5 and passes up the posterior aspect of the arm and
shoulder, joining the pericardium meridian in the chest.

Muscle Channel

This starts at the tip of the 4
th
digit and binds at the dorsum of the wrist.
From here it passes up along the forearm, binding with the olecranon and continuing up the
lateral aspect of the upper arm.
It passes over the shoulder to the neck, joining the SI muscle channel.
A branch separates at the angle of the mandible and binds with the root of the tongue.
Another branch passes up anterior to the ear to the lateral canthus of the eye, then travels
across the temple where it binds at the corner of the forehead.

LJ This point is ideal for the person who is always rushing into relationships and withdrawing
upon feeling exposed. The triple heater tends to generate a lot of fire in social relationships
and activities, expressed as excessive talking and chatter in social situations.
Conversely, this point may help a withdrawn individual expand their boundaries. Hence, this
point may either disperse the habituated energy of constantly pushing past one's boundaries,
or assist a person who is withdrawn to expand their horizons. This exemplifies the ability of
acupuncture to harmonize various aspects of being on a continuum from excess to deficiency.
Constantly rushing into the outer frontier, one may fall prey to external pathogenic factors,
hence, this point's function of dispelling wind and heat. Comparing the function of this point
with that of PC 9, it is apparent that PC 9 governs the flow of energy toward the center,
whereas TH I directs energy toward the outer frontier.
Other
As it is a frontier gate, its important qi moves freely through this point.
With a Fire imbalance you may have a lot of superficial warmth with no lasting strength or
center. Use this point to enrich the quality of Fire, to warm rigidity, coldness, numbness,
lack of sensitivity which may be a Metal problem with the Fire.
It has a tremendous effect on speech and articulation if the throat is numb (you cant
speak if metal is too cold), frozen shoulder, etc.
Used as a metal point when the mind is starved/cold/rigid, there may be an inability to
receive or appreciate the quality of incoming ideas.
JG: This gate opens someone to a place that was closed. It brings ease to a new
frontier, new territory. It enables one to see joy and adventure in life or a situation. Its
good for someone who doesnt want tot dance or date. With PC 8, use VI 1 to heal
deep Heart wounds around loneliness, vulnerability and fragility; this combination allows
them to go inside and heal and move back to the outside.

Name Humor Gate

The character ye means humor, i.e., the thicker fluids in the body, and highlights the
moistening function of this point. The ideograph men refers to the entry and exit of qi
at this point, hence the name Humor Gate. The functions of this point of addressing
vexation heat, increasing fluids & regulating the waterways are all reflected in its name.

In the earliest text devoted to acupuncture (Systemized Canon of Acupuncture and
Moxibustion) this point is called Armpit Gate, perhaps referring its effectiveness in
treating disorders of the upper arm.

As it is a frontier gate, its important qi moves freely through this point.

This point is located between Fluid Secretion Gate & Yang Pond, and thus this point
may be likened to a small island between two bodies of water.
The name may also be a reminder of TE functions. The character zhong may be
construed as a reference to source qi which is sometimes called zhong and is moved
by the TE, while zhu calls to mind the TEs governance of the waterways since an
island can also dictate the flow of water.
This point is also the wood point of the TE. Wood can block the flow of water,
causing water to flow around it just as if it were a small island.

Other
This is the Wood point of all Wood point for the Fire of all Fires. This point is
not used nearly enough. It has a tremendous effect on the mental level; its one
of the best mental points on the body.
The Triple Energizer must have a ready supply of Wood so that it can control
the uniformity of the warmth and Fire within us.
This point is a major link for how plans and decisions can be made.
The Liver belongs to the middle jiao; this point gives it energy & removes toxins.
It can be used to aid in the birth of getting well.
JG: This point deals with hopelessness. It plans some seeds of things a person
can do right now to bring joy into the moment. Its a good mental point.

In the landscape of the body, the spot where TE 4 is located resembles a pond, i.e.,
a shallow depression where water (or in this case source qi) can collect. This point is
located on the yang aspect of the wrist, and is thus called yang pool.

This point is the pond that supplies the ditches and sluices (what the Chinese
call the communications network).
The Triple Energizer has a strong water analogywater is able to communicate,
to re-establish warmth, harmony and stillness, our first level of energy, our
primary source level of communication.
This point can be excellent for educing high blood pressure.
It may be useful to moxa when blood pressure needs to be raised.
JG: This is a pool of light. Tap into it and bring the sunlight out into the rest of
the body.

LJ Together with PC 6, this point regulates the inner and outer aspects of illumination
governed by the heart and fires of mingmen. One virtue of the luo points on the yang
meridians is that they are able to drain the external pathogens that harm their
associated element. Hence, TH S relieves exterior and hot conditions. In this respect,
TH S is like a gate that may vent internal pressure and relieve the entire continuum of
function represented by the fire officials.

Other
The Triple Energizer can be thought of as a social ambassador going out to and
reaching out to the world, giving a wider point of view on things, harmonizing
our view of the world.
The Outer Frontier Gate is very important for maintaining harmony between our
internal environment and our external environment. This point opens the gate
between them, balancing the two functions.
This point is a source of power and mental strength.
It has a big effect on all the senses for those who dont want to see/hear/know,
for those who have mentally shut the gate. A person may have shut the gate
when its too much effort to join in and be part of whats going on.
This point is powerful in dealing with heat in a person and is a first aid point for
fever (Fire can be blown away by fever).

JG: This point relieves constraint in the Wood in regards to opening and
sharing. Its good for the person who has trouble with relationships.

Alternate Names: Flying Tiger
This point is located on the upper limb (i.e. branch) and can be found in the gully-like
depression between the sinews of the forearm. Because the TE helps to regulate water flow,
this depression can be likened to a water ditch. The name of this point reminds the
practitioner that just as water ditches are used to irrigate fields, the TE channel helps to irrigate
the body. The name also brings to mind TE 6s function of moistening the intestines.

LJ As the horary point, TH 6 is particularly effective for rekindling deficient fire or draining
excess fire. A flying tiger conjures images of abundant strength and energy. One can only
imagine how much inappropriate contact a flying tiger could make. The tiger is a yin animal
that should be on the earth rather than in heaven, flying.

Other
This point can stoke the fire in all 3 jiaos, therefore in all officials at once. This may bring
balance to them all.
Branch implies sharing responsibility (Ditch is perhaps better translated as a canal
carrying water of an unspecified quality).
The Triple Energizer controls waterways, which are vital pathways of communication in
China where irrigation was the key to control.
This is very powerful for V & VI CFs who cant get warm. It shakes out the dead ash
and enlivens the fire. Its also good for clearing out/detoxification.
JG: This point clears out the ditches. Use it when there is some Fire but it is congealed.
This point moves it. Its a good mental point.

Name Convergence and Gathering
Hui: to converge, to gather, to meet
Zong: a meeting of officials, a suzerain
ancestor; clan

Both Hu & Zong mean to meet or to gather. This point is the xi cleft point of the
TE, which is where TE qi collects. Some sources invoke the meaning of suzerain for
Zng. Just as a suzerainty is a part of a country yet rules from afar, this point is
located off the direct line of the TE channel, yet is still an important point.

The TE is associated with fire, and by extension, summer. The meeting (Hu) of
officials during the summer in ancient China was termed Zong. This point may be
named after this summertime gathering because it is also a gathering of fire, i.e., the
xi cleft point of the fire channel.

Other
This point is almost equal to GV 20 in its ability to return control to a person.
Its useful when the TE is block or not showing any real movement.
Its an assembly point of ancestors that can be used to bring calm, peace and
tranquillity. It has great authorityyou can go here to draw on the supreme
wisdom which will clarify the chaos.
The Chinese have always had an immense respect for their ancestral lineage. The
ancestral clan aspect of the point name denotes all the support, belonging and
obligation to be derived from an extended family connection in society as a
whole when there is confusion in the Body Mind Spirit.
JG: This point fills a person up with joy that he/she didnt get growing up. It
brings in warmth and a feeling of community to the inside. Its good for a TE that
is not strong enough to feel. Helps absorb the warmth that is present.

The 3 yang channels of the hand all pass near this point. There is no connecting
vessel at this point, so the word Luo simply implies the connection of these 3
channels.

Other
This point should only be used when youve achieved a reasonable balance
between the 3 yang arm officials. If you use it too early to bring disparate levels
together, you may not get much response.
This point is used more for the physical levelits connected with warmth,
activity and movement.
It can also be used on a mental level.
Its good for complete exhaustion, digestive disorders and sleeping a lot.
This is a point which cleans and clears out the TE so that a person can
experience some new joy. It clears out old negativity.

Name Four Rivers
S: four
Da: a large river; to show contempt; ditch,

Alternate Names: 4 Rivers

In this point name, the character Da, meaning river, is drawn from the Spiritual Axis,
where the TE is called zhong da, the central river. The term four rivers is a
reference to the four main rivers in China, and by extension, rivers and streams in
general. It could be that the number four was chosen because it nicely follows 3 Yang
Connection.

The Spleen is intimately connected with the number four, because four is the number
of tai yin, with which the spleen is associated, and because the spleen governs the
four limbs. The spleen is associated with damp and belongs to the earth element. TE
9 is like a ditch joining to TE 10, which is the earth point of the TE channel. In view
of this and the TEs function in relationship to the water pathways, this point name
could be rendered as Four Ditch, meaning a ditch to the Earth element, or to the
Spleen.

Other
This is like a man made ditch which carries away polluted water. Its good for
clearing out and detoxifying the meridian and official of impurities (e.g. deafness
caused by a blocked eustachian tube or a painful elbow joint).
This point is good when you are unable to get a balance on the TEit could be
due to a blocked gutter. Clearing it out can revitalize the Body Mind Spirit.

Name Celestial Well
Tian: celestial, of the heavens, sky; Nature; heaven
Jing: water well

This character combination in the nan jing describes a small pond surrounded by high cliffs,
i.e., a celestial well. Celestial Well is the name of an astrological constellation that resembles
a well, and is further the name for the courtyard in certain styles of Chinese houses.

out and detoxifying the meridian and official of impurities (e.g. deafness caused by a
blocked eustachian tube or a painful elbow joint).
This point accesses clarity and beauty, strengthening and reinforcing the spirit and mind.
This well contains a supply of heavenly qi that recharges and helps the patient to reach
deep into themselves contact is lost with the heavenly power or who they are.
The point enriches the Earth within the Fire and has direct repercussions on all of the
other 11 officials. This is the most neglected point in the whole bodyits magnificent.
This is Gods supply house. We can go here in order to draw from an inexhaustible well.
Drawing from this well is like feeding someone in the desert. All of the elements stem
from and are contained here.
You get no negative things from this well. It gives stability of mind, strength peace and
serenity to sick patients. A person can be made to feel held and secure. Its good for
people who are emotionally unstable, people who have not been given a steady
continuous love as children. It deals with all pain (more than ache).
JG: Its a filling point which says, I know you havent had quite what you need. No
one comes back from the well not getting what they need.

Name Clear Cold Abyss

This phrase is found in ancient geography books in reference to various lakes. It
implies the ability of this point to clear heat and drain fire.

This point has the dual function of

1. clearing heat and draining fire and

2. of
rekindling aspects of being from which fire has been withdrawn. I have found this
point effective in the restoration of warmth to the uterus and sexual organs when
warmth has been withdrawn as a response to betrayal.

This point accesses the refreshing, cooling qualities of the Harmonizer who
provides thermostatic control (which cools as well as heats).

Name Dispersing Riverbed
Xiao: to disperse, to eliminate

The character xiao means to relive or eliminate, while lu means riverbed, representing
water. The point name refers to the clear, cool nature of water (i.e. the waterways
regulated by the TE) that can clear heat and relieve thirst. Also brought to mind is
the dispersal of water over a riverbed as a metaphor for the TE function of dispersing
water throughout the body.

The character for lu is also pronounced p, and yin p is a name for either of two
disease conditions. The first involves the prolonged retention of pathogenic qi that is
stagnant and difficult to remove, while the second is a specific ailment that presents
with aching and lack of strength, usually affecting either the legs or arms.

An alternate name for this point is Dispersing Brilliance. The name reminds us of the
function of the point in dispersing TE fire. According to some sources, this is the
correct name of the point, while lu is a mistaken substitute.

LJ The name "Relax and Joy" does not represent a translation of the Chinese characters
(ciao.shuo) for this point. However, the point name as given by J.R. Worsley
uniquely expresses the spirit of this point. I consider the function of this point to be
similar to that of TH 17 but on a more spiritual level. This point may allow someone
who is uptight to relax and enjoy themselves, particularly during sex. A function
associated with this letting go of control is the ability to restore fluids depleted by
excess heat. This depletion may be evidenced in deficient vaginal secretions during
menopause. I have also used this point effectively in women unable to attain orgasm.

Other
When the solid water ice of a river thaws and gives way to fluidity, we
experience a release that can energetically be expressed as relax and joy.
This point is for the person who cant relax, sees little joy to be had, and is busy
running around seeing that everyone else is OK.

This point is like bathing someone in sunlight; it brings warmth to the mind and
spirit. Keep the sun in mind and the spirit will make a tremendous change.

The location of this point on the upper body accounts for the epithet celestial. Its
location in a space between bones gives it the name Celestial Bone Hole.

This point has a similar effect on the Triple Burner as SI 11 has on the Small
Intestine. It is more for the spirit than just the body and mind.
The official has to spend his time sending heat or cold to all of the other officials
in order to maintain harmony within the Body Mind and Spirit. This point goes
straight to the spirit of the Triple Burner, making it stronger and more resilient
and robust.
You may consider using TB 15 and SI 11 together, which will produce a
dramatic transformation. One is spreading warmth to the spirit of all the other
officials while cleansing them with an inner purity.
Moxa strengthens the upper respiratory tract and is good for colds, etc.
This point is also good for arthritis, pain and swelling, colds and weakness.

This point is located on the head, which is the anatomical parallel of cosmological
heaven. The eyes and ears are known as the windows of the head. The location of
this point along with its employment for unblocking qi and opening the portals (eyes,
ears and nose) accounts for the name Celestial Window.

LJ As a Window of the Sky point, TH 16 may empower deep insight into
communication, connection and other issues concerning the triple heater function.

Other
The Triple Burner serves the other officials and must see what is going on in every
corner of the kingdom. If his window is jammed shut or open, the result is
conflict among the officials and disharmony in the kingdom.
Within the patient, different parts may be hot and other cold, resulting in strife,
confusion, depression anxiety and fear. When the window is properly
functioning, all confusion is clarified and he can contact the unity of heaven; the
TBs spiritual eye sees the way to fulfill the needs of all the kingdom equally, and
tranquility returns.
This point is about being able to see what is going on and helps a person realize
the potential of warmth and love in his/her life.
It helps a person to be positive because things are clearer.
JG: This point brings the capacity to see joy that the patient is not currently
engaged in. Here they can look out and see it. Its especially good in Summer.

This point is located behind the ear, which acts as a screen for the point, shading it
and protecting it from the wind. In addition, the point may be utilized to dispel
wind, thus screening the body from wind pathogens. The name Wind Screen recalls
both ideas.

LJ This point protects the shoulder and neck from wind by strengthening the outer
defensive function of fire. Wind is anything that changes unpredictably and rapidly. In
Japan, rumors are considered to be a form of wind. This point relates to the triple
heaters function of regulating the social aspects of the fire element. This point may be
used to good advantage in people who are excessively concerned about what other
thinks about them. I recently used this good to good effect with a 15-year-old girl
who was afraid to report that she had been raped for fear of what others might think
of her.

Other
This point is a cookbook point for deafness, but beware as it can cause it too!
It can be used with TB 21 to treat deafness in children.
This point is better for ear pain than total deafness, particularly ear troubles
caused by wind and damp, such as infections and tinnitus.
Its good for people for whom the outside of the ear feels damp and itchy. They
are constantly sticking their fingers in their ear to scratch.
Its also used in jaw conditions, especially Bells Palsy.
Consider using moxa on the needle here.

pulling of the muscles immediately followed by relaxation, i.e., clonic spasm. This
type of spasm is generally associated with epileptic diseases or psychotic fits. The use
of this point in treating this disease is most likely the reason for the name Spasm
Vessel.

The Triple Burner is responsible for the well being of every one of the other 11
officials, so all of the officials benefit by using this point.
This point brings warmth, love, compassion heat and clarity of energy to each of
the officials.
It can feed overall vitality.
Use this point or 19 or 20 for any ear problems.

In classical Chinese, xi can mean to rest, and fullness or stuffiness. Thus this name
could be a reference to an ability to calm the spirit (i.e. allow it to rest), thereby
treating fright, spasms, epilepsy and fright palpitations; or it could be a reference to
the treatment of clouded head and stuffiness.

The skull does breathe and move. This point is good for symptoms of the head
(as if bottled up). Its like an AEP for the skull.
Its also good for difficulties in breathing related to Triple Burner.

Name Angle Vertex
Jiao: angle, corner; horn; a constellation
Sun: grandson; posterity, descendants; a young shoot


The location of TE 20 on the head is similar to that of the jiao (horn) constellation,
which occupies a spot on the head of a celestial dragon. Sun in this interpretation
refers to the vertex, or end, of the angle formed by the TE channel at this point just
as a grandson is the end of a family line.

Jiao may be a reference to the points location at the top corner of the era. A Qing
Dynasty dictionary defines sun as equivalent to dun, to conceal or to vanish. The
channels seeming disappearance (this branch of the channel ends at TE 20) suggests
the name Corner Disappearance.

The character jiao can also mean horn as in the horns of a bull, while sun can mean
a young shoot or sprout. If humans sprouted horns, TE 20 is the place from which
they would grow.

The Spiritual Axis states that when the KI is in harmony the ears can hear the five
sounds. Since this point is employed in treating deafness, it can be said to harmonize
the kidney. The rendering of the name as Harmony Bone is meant to express this
idea.

TE 22 is also the reunion point for SI, TE, GB (this is different than what JRs book
says). It is located in a hole where the channels come together. The point name could
be rendered as Uniting Bone-Hole.

In ancient China, the character he was used to describe a gate with banners hanging
at both sides. The tufts of hair at the temples where this point is located may be
likened to those banners, and translating this name as Banner-Gate Bone Hole would
express this interpretation.

LJ As the thermostat of the body, the triple heater must maintain harmony between the
many aspects of interdependent function that contribute to health. Harmony Bone is
the reunion point of the gallbladder, small intestine, and triple heater officials. These
three yang meridians are prone to excesses of stagnant qi, heat, and fire that may
cause imbalances in hearing and vision. In my clinical experience, TH 22 is a main
point for harmonizing all manner of imbalances that undermine clarity of mental
function. This function is emphasized by this points location along the horizontal axis
of the head.

The characters si zhu, silk bamboo, refer to a type of bamboo that has tiny leaves. The
eyebrow resembles these leaves, and the point is located in a hole at the lateral extremity of
the eyebrow. If TE 22 is rendered as Harmony Bone-Hole then it may be appropriate to
translate TE 23 as Strings and Pipes Hole, because si and zhu (silk and bamboo) refer to
stringed and wind instruments respectively. Both points would then have names related to
music.

LJ This point is the terminal point of the triple heater meridian and, therefore, represents the
outermost aspects of the fire element. The function of TH 23 is to bring this outer fire back
into ones depths. This may be likened to the bamboo plant deriving energy from the external
manifestation of its flower (silk) back into its hollow core. (Both silk and bamboo were
important resources in China). Ayscough affirms that the presence of bamboo in the Imperial
palace symbolizes the empty heart which is ready to receive all goods and virtuous
suggestions. So should the emperor be ready to listen to the advice of his ministers. This
point may treat someone whose fire is externally focused as a means of preventing intimacy.
This may manifest as excessive social chatter that never touches the heart of the matter or one
who makes too many social commitments as a means of avoiding intimacy with ones mate. It is
interesting to compare the function of the first point on a meridian with that of the last point
on the same meridian. A function of TH 1, Rushing the Frontier Gate, is to push someone
who is withdrawn into expanding their horizons. Compare this with TH 23 which returns the
external focus ones fire back to ones core.

This point is good for all eye conditions, like a blood brother of Bladder 1.
Bamboo refers to the eyebrow, in its form like a calligraph of a bamboo leaf.
This point is good for the spiritespecially insanity.
It takes warmth right down the hollow, allowing heat to penetrate deeply.
