|ndla has an anclent tradltlon of carpet
weavlng, wlth the lndustry flourlshlng ln
the country from the l6th century
onwards. Today, |ndla ls the world's largest
producer and exporter of hand-made
carpets ln terms of value as well as volume.
|n fact, around 90 per cent of the carpets
manufactured ln |ndla are exported. |ndlan
carpets are known worldwlde for thelr
excellent deslgn, fasclnatlng colours and
quallty.
Seven types of hand-made carpets are
produced ln the country:
Hand-knotted woollen carpets
Tufted woollen carpets
Gabbe woollen carpets
Hand-made woollen dhurrles
Pure sllk carpets
Staple/synthetlc carpets
Chaln stltch rugs
Most of the carpet manufacturlng ln
|ndla takes place ln the northern part of
the country ln the towns of 8hadohl, Agra,
1alpur, Srlnagar and Danapur.
|n 2012-13, exports of hand-made carpets
stood at US$ 1,074.29 mllllon, reglsterlng a
growth of 12.4 per cent over the previous

year. Exports have grown by 15.6 per
cent since 2008-09.
|ndlan hand-made carpets are exported
to over l00 natlons and the US accounts for
the largest share. Por lnstance, around 40
per cent of the total hand-made carpet
exports in 2011-12 were to the US. India has

domlnated the US carpet market over the
last l0 years, emerglng as the most preferred
carpet suppller to the US among all the
ma[or carpet exportlng natlons, including
Chlna, Nepal, Turkey and Paklstan.
Germany was the second-most lmportant
export destlnatlon ln 2011-12, accountlng
for about 13.5 per cent of exports, followed
by the UK and Australia accounting for about

5.8 per cent and 3.0 per cent respectively
Italy, Canada, France, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Japan,
Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Norway,
Finland, Argentina are some of the other
export destinations for Indian carpets.
There are about 2,500 hand-made carpet
manufacturers ln |ndla. Most producers
have certlflcatlons such as Pug Mark, Care

and Palr, Kaleen and wool Mark that slgnlfy quallty and
ethlcal productlon.
|ndlan hand-made carpets are characterlsed by attractlve
colours, quallty raw materlal, skllled workmanshlp, flne
weavlng and flnlshlng. |n addltlon, the |ndlan carpet
lndustry boasts of a large labour pool. As a result, |ndla has
strateglcally posltloned ltself as a hlgh-volume, cost-
effectlve producer of a wlde range of carpets. Moreover,
the |ndlan carpet lndustry's dynamlc nature and ablllty to
transform accordlng to the tlmes ls one of lts strengths. |n
