Question of the Week in the light of todays liturgy
(19th October)

Am I already exercising faithful, responsible citizenship?
Or, is it time for me to join or even initiate a campaign to
address specific public needs?
Hopefully from this weekend onwards, you will also be able to access the parish newsletter from our twitter feed (@olgcga).
This involves the use of a new programme for us, so please bear with us if it doesnt quite work first time around!!!!

We are really sorry to say that this event has had

events are put on purely to get the parish to-
gether and raise extra funds but it is soul destroy-
ing for the team who take the time to organise
events for the parish, when only a small number
respond. We would like to thank those parishion-
ers who did buy Tickets and let them know that
they can get a refund on their ticket if they bring
it to the Parish Office this week.

Awakening Faith is a series of meetings
primarily for people who have been away from
the church for a while and now want to make a
fresh start. The sessions can help to discover the
ways in which the church has changed in recent
years.

Seeking Christ is a programme for those who
want to look at the Catholic Church, who have
either been baptised in another Christian tradi-
tion or never been baptised.
There are eight sessions in the programme
to help welcome and engage those who are
thinking of possibly becoming a Catholic. There is of course no obliga-
tion after completing the eight week programme, but, if people decide
they would then like to move forward to becoming a catholic we can
then help them with this.

If you know of people who might be interested in either programme
please let them know about it. If they want any further information
they can contact the Parish Office on 0161 764 1630 or by e-mail on
olgcga@btinternet.com

The meetings are going very well, and its still not too late to join us.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 23rd October at 7.30 pm in the
Parish Centre Lounge. (N.B. There will not be a meeting the follow-
ing week because its half-term).

REFRESHMENTS AFTER THE 10.30 am
MASS
EACH SUNDAY

With more and more new parishioners in our
parish, it is easy to forget that new people might
not know about some of our existing things that
we all take for granted. So come and join us
in the Parish Centre after Mass for a brew (juice for the children)
and a biscuita great time to chat with new people, make new
friends, and feel even more a part of the parish community
PARENT AND TODDLERS
GROUP

Again something that we can take for
granted and forget to let our new (as
well as existing parishioners know
about from time to time)
The parent and toddlers group meets on MONDAYS from
1.003.00 pm in the Parish Centre. All are welcome.
CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD
We had a great meeting a couple of weeks ago for our
existing helpers and new volunteers who are going to get in-
volved (with apologies from quite a few others as well).
Where do we go now? We will be having another meeting (after
half-term), looking at the practicalities in more details, and also
looking at the safeguarding regulations and practicalities. If you
would like to get involved in being a part of the team for either
the 8.45 or 10.30 Mass, please contact the Parish Office and we
will add you to the list. The more people we have in the team,
the less pressure it is on our existing team members.
If you would like to get involved, please contact the office on
0161 764 1630 or by e-mail: olgcga@btinternet.com.
Many thanksFr Paul.
Offertory Envelope usersplease note
Our counters have made us aware of the fact that sometimes the
side of the envelope where there is a seam comes open, and this
means that coins in particular end up coming out of the enve-
lopes before they are counted.
If you find that yours are likely to do this, please put a piece of
sellotape on that seam so that your contribution doesnt end up
in with the loose collection.

It starts again this weekend! The first draw is taking place this
Sunday after the 10.30 am Mass in the Parish Centre, during Tea
and Coffeecome on in and see who wins.

A big thank you to all our Agents and all those who are taking
part in the 10 week Drawas I have mentioned in the past, it
has brought in a large amount of extra capital for the Parish. We
are only able to do the extras (decorating the church outside
and inside, new flooring etc) with the help of the extra capital
generated by our social events and the 10 week draw. Paying the
utility bills and diocesan levy etc takes the majority of our
weekly income.

Each week there are prizes of 50.00 and 25.00 (plus agents
prizes of 5.00 if the winner is on your book). Once more the
big draw will once more be 1000plus the other prizes. We
have to wait and see what comes in before we can announce the
big prize, as we have to keep within the charities law on prizes.

Thank you also to those who have become new agents.
Maintenance Day
Saturday 25th October
10.30 am3.30 pm
This Maintenance Day will give us
the chance to get ready for the winter which
is now creeping up on us, and do lots of
jobs. We have a busy few months coming
up, when we will have many visitors to our parish, through the
regular baptism celebrations, the November Mass for the be-
reaved, and of course Christmas! So we want the Church and the
whole Church site looking at its best.
There will be jobs that can be done by people of all
agesloads of work to be done!

As usual there will be a chippy lunch provided for every-
oneso come along and help out.

(just to help us plan some of the work, there is a sign up list at
the back of churchif you think you will be able to join us
please sign upbut of course you can just turn up on the day!!!)
See you next Saturday!
The Beatification of Pope Paul VI
This Sunday (19th October) Pope Paul VI will be
beatified in St Peters Square by Pope Francis. Paul
VI followed John XXIII, and continued the work of
the Second Vatican Council.
Here are just a few points about his life:
Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini was
born on September 26, 1897 at Concesio (Lombardy) Italy. He
entered the Seminary in 1916. Ordained in 1920, in 1923 he was
sent to Warsaw as attache of the nunciature for a year, and then
assigned to the office of the Secretariat of State where he re-
mained for the next thirty years, whilst also teaching. He was
appointed as the Archbishop of Milan, and took possession of
his diocese in January 1955 and soon made himself known as
the "archbishop of the workers." On the death of Pope John
XXIII, Montini was elected June 21, 1963. Pope Paul Vl, the
pilgrim pope, died on August 6, 1978, the feast of the Transfigu-
ration. He asked that his funeral be simple with no catafalque
and no monument over his grave.
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year
If you wish to contribute to the View from the
Pew, please contact the Parish Office.
These are anonymous comments from
parishioners.

Isaiah speaks of Cyrus in our first reading today.
Cyrus was a king of Persia who conquered Babylon and liber-
ated the Jewish people. In this reading, we see that it was the
Lord who called Cyrus into action on behalf of the Jews. God
is the Lord, and that there is no other.
St Paul draws our attention to the fact that we are
loved by the God who chose us in Christ.
In the gospel, as Jesus argues with the Pharisees, he
readily admits that there are other priorities in life, like pay-
ing taxes, but it is God who should be first in our attitudes
and actions.
Having your child baptised.
If you are planning on having your child
baptised, please pick up a leaflet from the
Welcome and Information centre, which
outlines our baptism preparation
programme.
Please note that the first thing that parents have to do is contact the
Parish Office (telephone on 0161 764 1630 or call in) to book
onto the First Meeting, held on the first Sunday of each
month. This means that our Baptism Preparation Team have a
workable number of people.
MINIBUS DRIVERS
If you cannot fulfil your rota duty, please arrange a swap with
another team. Thanks.

Fr Denis McBrides latest
book:

PRAYING THE ROSARY
A journey through scripture
and art.

Copies of this new book only
arrived in the Parish Office on
Friday of this weekhot off the
press! But from a quick read
through it, we think this is a
book that will be a real support
in praying the rosary. We would highly recommend this book
to you.

The format of the book is simple:
1. First there is a reading from the New Testament
2. This is followed by a meditation on the scripture
passage
3. A painting is then included which offers its own take
on the subject
4. There is a brief reflection on the painting
5. Finally there is a prayer on some aspect of the
mystery.

There are copies of Fr Denis new book on sale on the table at
the back of Church this weekend, and available from the Par-
ish Office during the week.

12.95 a copy (136 pages)

OTHER BOOKS AT THE BACK OF CHURCH

Evangelisation in the Diocese, one on St John Paul II and one
this past week on St John XXIII, there is an opportunity to

are also other books on different topics. We wanted to give
you the opportunity to buy them before they are sent back to
our suppliers.
Have a look at them, and if you havent got money with you
today, the person on the bookstall will gladly fill in your
details and we will invoice you for anything you take away.

Enjoy browsing and get yourself a good book!
