1) How can your teaching be consistently good or outstanding by Wendy Adeniji (deputy head, MFL
teacher and recently qualified Ofsted inspector resources to be online soon, will post when done
3 main things to focus on marking and effective feedback, questioning, collaborative learning.
1- Marking and effective feedback: Must facilitate student progress, and show attention to all sub-
groups in a class. Pupils need to understand how to improve and progress. How do you monitor
progress over time? Must be a level of challenge shown, not too easy, so that effort and success are
shown. Student response (green pens) must show real comments, not just thank you! Should be
editing or rewriting mistakes. To save marking time typed stickers for feedback, or 4 or 5 feedback
statements on board and students simply have the number in their book to respond to. Evidence of
peer assessment at least once or twice a term pupils need to be trained how to do properly.
Evidence of verbal feedback?
2- Questioning: Effective Qs should be probing and force student reflection. Promote active
listening use waiting time, think-pair-share, follow up Qs, summarising, surveys, random name
generator. All students should be questioned, not just keen with hands up, but right Qs for right
students. Target language should be used but when appropriate it must always be understood
what teacher is saying/asking.
3- Collaborative learning (specifically Kagan): Methods need to be trained, but a vast range of
collaborative ideas possible. Google Kagan for complete list good ones are Round Robin, Quiz-quiz-
trade, talking counters (for balanced discussion).
Talking for writing (sounds really useful for KS4 for remembering CA work) Have a paragraph of
detailed model CA text, then use a variety of tasks for aiding memory skills actions, repetition,
pictures, missing words, quiz-quiz-trade, odds and evens game, pick out phrases, trapdoor (for more
detail just ask me, easier to show than explain!)
Sample outstanding lesson (key tips):
Flight path graph to monitor learning over lesson. Youtube song to engage (French simple future)
gap fill verb forms. Use of MWBs to show answers and understanding. Success criteria if used
must refer back to them. Based speaking task level on how many correct on previous reading task
more correct = higher level speaking task. Peer assessment. Use of dictionary train students to use
themselves, not just ask teacher for words. Lesson plan not essential but can help provide vital info
to observer about class, even then, dont stick to it rigidly, most importantly make sure all pupils
understand and progress.
(Re Ofsted read this article http://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/oct/17/ofsted-tells-
teachers-what-not-to-do-in-effort-to-dispel-inspection-myths and the Ofsted release
http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/ofsted-inspections-clarification-for-schools gives a lot of info re
what to do/not do now much better for us in my opinion.)
Making creative use of authentic resources at KS3 by Rachel Hawkes whole powerpoint and
resources on her website http://www.rachelhawkes.com/PandT/2014_Curriculum/2014Curr.php
where there is also a huge myriad of other resources and ideas for all sorts of things. As whole ppt is
available, I will just add a few extra notes here.
KS3 must link into new GCSE curriculum (which current year 8s will be first to do).
From official framework docs - Does our teaching: open into cultures, promote curiousity, allow
them to express their ideas and thoughts?
Variety of authentic sources for understanding, responding, and appreciating! New GCSE L and R
exams will use higher language i.e. poems, short stories, so how to deal needs to be introduced in
KS3 for continuity.
Can be poetry/songs/adverts/paintings/visual etc - See slide on ppt with variety of options for all 3
langs.
All of them could be used as base for extending students engagement and learning performances,
readings, short films.
Authentic resources open students up to a wider range of language more interesting for them.
Language teachers Show and Tell by a wide range of teachers teachers showing off new ideas or

3) Other CPD possibilities/information
ALL Association of Language Learning London Branch has regular meetings and CPD sessions,
including online webinars (where 100-150 teachers collaborate and share ideas in a joint session
online, which can be done from anywhere. They are also holding a whole day CPD session at
Ashcombe School in Surrey on 25
th
Nov on how to actually use new technologies - its free so if you
can get time off school its a great idea, I plan on at least trying! http://www.all-london.org.uk/ for
more details and events.
Also this weekend, aside from languages show, there was another similar event taking place on the
Isle of Wight called Teaching and Learning Takeover with teachers from all over the country speaking
and sharing ideas. Here is a link to a storify account of the weekend, which includes links to various
blogs and ideas https://storify.com/ukedchat/ukedchat?utm_medium=sfy.co-
twitter&utm_content=storify-pingback&utm_source=t.co&awesm=sfy.co_evqv&utm_campaign=
Check it, you might get some good ideas.
Teachmeets Having gone to another one on Thursday at NSB, they are a great way of meeting
other language teachers and sharing ideas. The link to all the things discussed should be up soon
online, as soon as it is I will pass that on as well.
Finally, if you are not on Twitter, do it! Follow @joedale, he has a list called #mfltwitterati which is a
collection of language teachers from all over, and we all share ideas and advice on there, its great!
