4. Reading

A Read the email. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?

Hi Anne

I feel so bad for not having written for such a long time, but so much has been going on and I just havent
had time to get to the computer to check emails, let alone write any. Anyway, how are you doing? Is
everything as you expected? I bumped into your brother the other day and he said that youd settled down
well and he was planning to visit you soon. Perhaps Ill come along as well (if youre still speaking to me after
my long silence!) :-)

Well, I guess youre wondering whats been going on. You know me, always agonising about what Im doing
and whether Ive made the right decision or not the story of my life. I know from the outside everything seems
very simple, but somehow to me it isnt. To cut a long story short, the first problem was my accommodation.
You know I decided that Id prefer to live on the university campus as I figured it would be easier to meet
people. Well, Im not like you, I really need my sleep and I need peace and quiet to study. It was crazy! There
was always a party going on somewhere in the building and obviously I couldnt complain that wouldnt have
won me any friends. So there was my first dilemma and I went to the accommodation office to see if I could
move to a private house. They told me theyd do their best to help, but in the meantime I just had to put up with
it.

After a couple of weeks I still hadnt heard anything, so I realised I would have to decide for myself. A snap
decision, but one brought about by nights of too little sleep. I know, I know, Im not exactly known for my
spontaneity. Im the one who will weigh up all the pros and cons of any given situation, but to be honest I just
couldnt stand it any longer. So, I decided there and then that I was going to give up my course. And once Id
made that decision, there was no more dithering.

I called Mum and Dad, who were great. They didnt try to make me change my mind, although I could tell
they were rather surprised. They just came to collect me and all my stuff and now Im back at home writing
out application letters. I was a bit indecisive at first, but figured that as I effectively have a gap year now, Im
going to try and get a job in Australia. I dont want to waste time staying here and Ive heard its pretty easy
to pick up work while youre travelling.

What do you think? Do you think Im mad? I hope this isnt a decision I might live to regret. Well, theres no
point and who knows what adventures Ill have when Im away. Im pretty sure I wont apply for the same
subjects again, so the year will give me time to really think about what I want to do. Old habits die hard after
all and I cant imagine I wont find some decision or other to worry about!

Please write and give me your news and hopefully we can get together before I leave.

B Read the article on money-saving tips and answer the questions.

Everyone knows how hard it can be to make ends meet when you start student life, whether you live at home
or move into your own accommodation. So weve put together some ideas which will help you to save
money and keep your budget under control. We hope you will find it helpful and of course we welcome any
ideas you may have.

A
There are certain things which we can classify as luxuries and certain things which are necessities and of
course food is something that no one can live without. As food prices continue to go up, it becomes
increasingly important to find cheaper ways to eat healthily. Most towns and villages have a market where
you can buy produce that is grown locally. Not only is it cheaper, but it is also more environmentally friendly.
Following a vegetarian diet can also save you money, but if you find it hard to live without meat, how about
restricting your intake to a couple of days a week?

B
Very few students have a full timetable so why not find yourself a part-time job? You could find work in a
local restaurant or shop or perhaps help people in the neighbourhood with chores like gardening, car
washing and housework. Of course, we wouldnt advise you to take on more than a few hours a week
otherwise your academic work will suffer, but a little money here and there will make all the difference.

C
If you are not lucky enough to have a local market, you will of course have to use the shops. Supermarkets
tend to be cheaper than independent retailers and you can benefit from the special promotions they often
have like BOGOF (buy one get one free). Alternatively, if you have time, its worth going to the shops at the
end of the day as many items will have been reduced as theyve reached their sell-by date.

D
Clothes, books and DVDs can cost a small fortune when youre having to economise, so if you want to treat
yourself, why not check out the charity shops? Stock changes daily so you never know what bargains you
might find. Alternatively, if you have stuff to get rid of, you can donate it to the cause and in that way youre
doing good while also benefitting.

E
What if youd like to make money as opposed to saving it? You can set up an eBay account and sell your
belongings online. You might think that your old CDs are worthless, but youd be surprised. For every item
up for sale there will surely be an interested buyer. We think youll be amazed at how much money you can
make. All you need is access to the internet and the world of cyber-selling can be yours.

F
Youd like to have piano lessons, but you dont have the money. You can speak French and German and
you have a driving licence or can offer babysitting. How about doing an exchange? J oin the LETS scheme
(Local Exchange Trading System) and see whos out there with talents and services to offer. No money
changes hands and both parties get what they want.

We hope weve given you some food for thought. Next week: cooking on a student budget.
e.g. Which tip requires the use of technology? E
1 Which tip recommends supporting local farmers? ....
2 Which tip suggests looking for reductions? ....
3 Which tip suggests making use of your skills? ....
4 Which tip recommends looking for second-hand goods? ....
5 Which tip recommends finding an income? ....

You are going to read a newspaper article about a woman who spent last year as a
judge for the British Theatre Awards, Five sentences have been removed from the
article. Choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (1-5). There is
one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

Mrs Hart amateur theatre critic

Who judges the British Theatre Awards? James Pickard finds out.

Elisabeth Hart went to the theatre in London 55 times last year. She read 55 programmes, saw 55 curtains
rise and ate an undisclosed number of ice creams. On top of that, she had to write page after page of notes
on each visit. However, she is not a professional theatre critic. She is an ordinary member of the public on
the judging panel of this years British Theatre Awards.

Mrs Hart was one of four theatre-lovers chosen to judge all new drama productions (excluding musicals) last
year. They were part of a panel that also included five professional theatre critics. Mrs Hart thinks this was
a good system. Its important to have amateurs playing a part in the decisions, she says. It stops the
awards appearing to have been fixed like some others. And if a play wins an award, the public know that its
been approved by people with no axe to grind.

Mrs Hart is extremely enthusiastic about the theatre. The year before last I went to over 30 plays, she says,
and they were a complete mixed bag. (1)_______ It began with an application form left on a foyer shelf by
the Society of London Theatre, which organises the awards. She filled it in, added a short theatre review,
and was selected from several hundred applicants.

They were looking for people with a very wide table in theatre, she explains. I always enjoyed acting in
plays when I was young, and as a student in London. I regularly bought cheap standing tickets for West End
productions. Being a judge was hard work, though. (2)_____ But I never got sick of it. Even the plays I
didnt like always had some redeeming qualities.

She could never sit back and relax, though, because she had to make hefty notes on everything. (3)_______
It wasnt just the actors we were judging, but also costume design, direction, lighting and script twelve
categories in all But I still enjoyed it. It felt like an enormous privilege.

In the situation there is surely a danger of the professional critics dominating the discussions. That didnt
happen at all. It was all very civilised and friendly, says Mrs Hart, We were listened to and our votes were
all equal.

Theatre critics, of course, are known for their power to make or break a play. (4)_______ I wasnt treated
differently at all, although one receptionist did optimistically describe me as looking as if I was keen to enjoy
my evening.

(5)_______ It is bursting with talent on all fronts, from playwriting to direction, and there are plenty of
innovative developments in productions. I personally think new writing should be encouraged. But overall,
theatre is definitely alive and kicking.

A Having to take this approach meant that
she couldnt let her concentration slip at
any time.

D The experience has left Mrs Hart
optimistic about the state of British
theatre.
B Regular theatre-goers usually disagree
with some of their judgements, of
course, and Mrs Hart is no exception.

E In one week alone, her duties involved
her reviewing as many as seven plays.
C Her appointment was therefore
something of a dream come true for her.

F So did management show her enormous
respect?
